K&W Cafeteria has been a staple in my life since I was a kid. I used to go to the location at…read moreTanglewood, and now that this is the only one left, it's my go-to spot whenever I'm back in town. I always order the chicken tenders and baked spaghetti with two dinner rolls--and it's consistently delicious every time. Prices vary depending on what you get. For my meal and my brother's, it came to about $42. That's a bit pricey compared to other local options, but I'm willing to pay it since K&W is unique to Roanoke and holds a lot of nostalgia for me. The staff serving the food were incredibly friendly, and the servers were great as well. The only downside--and the reason for my 4/5 rating--is that the restrooms were pretty dirty. Otherwise, it's a place I'll keep coming back to whenever I'm in town.

They have an assembly line and assemble the food as you move down the line....pretty small portions compared to today's expectations (probably servings we SHOULD be having). the food was OK.. nothing salt, pepper and hot sauce couldn't fix. The waitresses were very attentive and was ready to bring you anything else you may have needed. Old school interior, very spacious, Nostalgic if you will... give this place a try if you want to avoid the crazy crowds and mass feeding frenzy of the more contemporary buffet restaurants in the area.

If you were to take your significant other to a place where they cook the food right in front of…read moreyou, this would be it. Thanks to the generosity of two local businessmen, Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas Sr., students at Liberty University were given the Reber Thomas Dining Hall. The "ROT," as students have coined it, serves as the primary dining hall on campus. Students are quick to speak poorly of the "ROT" for its fake eggs and dry pancakes. Despite the below-average breakfast food (besides the omelet), the main courses are diverse and delicious. My personal favorite, the 360 Grill, is a great choice for a first-time visitor. This station serves chicken and rice, burritos, tacos, and even gyros. The workers, however, may not always provide the best customer experience. One time, I was refilling the ice in my drink and was scolded for "wasting the ice" from the soda dispenser. While not all "ROT" workers are evil, experiences like this don't add to an otherwise positive dining experience. That said, the dining hall is well-kept and features a functional and efficient plate return system. It is well-lit, has high ceilings, and offers plenty of outdoor seating options. While I don't love the "ROT," I do like it--so I'm giving it a 3-star rating.

The ROT (along with any college dining hall) has a lot of flaws. However, in comparison to the rest…read moreof these, it stands pretty strong- offering an extreme variety from Italian, to Mexican to other specialties. It is well organized with various drink and silverware stations spread throughout the hall, additionally offering waffle and pancake makers, and more. The employees sometimes get very frustrated, as I had once encountered a gentlemen telling his co-worker to get some bread- and the co-worker responded telling him he was on break. However, the man said "I ain't ask if you were on break, go get me some dang bread!" Though these actions are rather unprofessional, they tend to make the experience more entertaining. My personal favorite station would either be the omelette station, or the lunch station that changes every day- from flatbreads, to meatball subs, to chicken parm, it always has something good. Despite its upbringings, the ROT has many flaws. Sometimes there is more liquid coming out of the eggs than I'd like to see. Sometimes the meat looks a color it probably shouldn't. However, despite these flaws, compared to most dining halls, it is very solid. If I could give the ROT a 3.5 out of 5 I wouldn't. I'd just give them a 3. It is very fitting on a stand point in comparison to other dining halls, but all other food.

Multiple layers of flavor and all the right textures. Visually appealing on the plate as well. Solid cocktail list here. I'm a big fan that they go old school with a hot toddy. The applejack brandy added to that is a nice touch. Service is excellent here. Prices reasonable given the quality of the dishes. Will be back the next time I'm in town for sure. Ordered a cucumber chamomile gin and tonic, which left something to be desired. We started with the blackberry salad which on the menu said it also included avocado but there was none on the salad-despite this the salad was great. Our mains were good but not great. The biggest issue I found here was despite our server being very nice while ordering she NEVER checked in on us after anything arrived, never refilled waters either. So although she was nice the service was not good as there were times we wanted to order something else and one of the entrees didn't arrive as it was ordered but our server never checked in. All things considered I think I would only come here to grab a salad or appetizer.

And who doesn't love meat + cheese + bread? So when sustenance was needed on our road trip, a Yelp search for "sandwiches" led us to What A Blessing. I admit we were skeptical. The interior was small and... well... odd. It reminded me of my great-aunt Marie's farmhouse. Upon immediately walking in the door I saw that a large bakery case was empty. I almost walked out thinking the place was going out of business. However, we grabbed a table in the (small) dining room and perused the limited menu. We ordered roast beef, but they were out of it. We ordered soup, but they had none to offer. Discouragement set it, but we persevered. Finally, our subs and sandwiches arrived! They all came with a side of BBQ chips. Now... BBQ chips are my favorite, so I perked up immediately. Let me shout this: THE SUB ROLLS WERE HOMEMADE! They were delicious. Fantastic flavor. Perfect texture and crumb. The subs were piled with meat, which tasted high quality. Kid #1 swore her turkey was Boar's Head. Maybe it was or maybe it wasn't, but it was definitely quality meat. My cheesesteak was fantastic, and the Italian sub was spot-on. The burger was just average, but the delicious HOMEMADE bun made up for it. All the veggies (lettuce, tomato, etc.) on our subs seemed fresh. The owner(?) dropped some free pastries at our table, too. Sweet, tender, and tasty! I would recommend you grab a donut or two to go, too. In the area and want a sweet or a sammie? Check out What A Blessing to support a local guy and a Christian.
