Hands down the best sushi you will find for miles. I moved to La Habra Heights about a year ago and was so disappointed in the sushi options available. I love eating at Katsu-Ya (studio city), Sugar Fish, Sushi Gen in little Tokyo to name a few and this place is so very comparable. Best of all its 10 minutes away and I no longer have to commute over half an hour for amazing sushi. I have not tried their teriyaki or mix tempura plate as it seems like a waste to eat that here. Jason is an amazing sushi chef. He is attentive and his recommendations are delicious. If you want real authentic sushi try this place and leave the teriyaki ordering for Yoshinoya. What you get is each fish you order has its own distinct taste not like other places that just give you quantity and it all taste the same. Order off Chef's special menu you cannot go wrong. I have been here twice and the experience will have me coming back more. This place is husband and wife owner operated and they really hit the nail straight on the center. The service is exceptional and the food is beyond words. Everything is right on and the Sushi Chef creativity is some of the best that I have seen. Very clean and it's even good for kids. We must have tried at least 1/2 of what was on the sushi menu and there was not one item that we didn't enjoy. Love the avocado fries and the ceviche will have be coming back for more. Dakara Sushi is a great hole in the wall restaurant! Although I've only had their Chicken teriyaki and tempura combo, my bf and daughter who order sushi, they love eating here too. I live almost 30 minutes away from Dakara and even with the high gas prices, I wouldn't hesitate the chance to eat there. The clientele there seems to be a lot of local people and it's always crowded. It' seems to be a family run business with the same attentive servers. Seriously once you visit Dakara Sushi, you will be hooked just like me, my family and friends! This place is intimate enough for a date, family dinner, special occasion or simply by yourself. It's always clean and a very friendly staff which makes you feel welcome and it's run by the coolest husband & wife team. Their prices are very fair and worth every penny. Such a yummy menu, but here are a few of our favorites: spicy edamame, albacore sushi, seared albacore with crispy onions, dakara roll, spicy tuna with popcorn shrimp, yellow tail with jalapeno, tuna tostada and of course the baked crab hand roll (sooo good...you'll thank me later). I eat A LOT of sushi. This place is small-ish but lively with plenty of room for a few families. There is a little jazz music playing in the background and the customers seem to be enjoying themselves on a Friday night, and the atmosphere has a relaxed feel to it. FOOD QUALITY: Outstanding! Fresh! I tried the sashimi platter, some rolls, and some nigiri. The yellowtail was some of the best I've had. The octopus was excellent, juicy and not too chewy. The sashimi slices were not huge--and that's OK--but you could definitely taste the quality. Even a simple roll, like spicy salmon, was mouth-watering with a distinct Japanese flavor. SERVICE: Attentive and adequate, with a genuine feel to it. Everyone seems to love the sushi chef! The staff is hustling to help the customers or to cook. They can get pretty busy at times, so call ahead for To-Go orders. OVERALL: My 2nd time here and I LOVE this place already. It's not a place with a giant menu of fusion rolls stuffed with imitation Krab, but rather a balanced menu with all of the good stuff--and they can probably make anything you can dream up. Finally! An excellent Japanese-owned sushi restaurant in Whittier! Dakara Sushi occupies the same space the old Mitsuru Restaurant used to be. They are not related. The new owners used to be chefs at Katsu-Ya. They are really friendly and personable. I had the Mixed Sushi Dinner, it went way beyond my expectations. The fish was so fresh, it just melts in your mouth. One would usually expect to pay top dollar for this level of sushi, so I would say the price was very reasonable. My wife had the Sashimi and Tempura dinner, and she said the tempura was also very good. Their Miso soup is excellent too! How many times do people compliment the miso soup in Japanese restaurants? I hope to try some of their specials next time, it all looks so good. Hopefully they will serve beer and sake in the future. read more

About as good as sushi gets in Whittier. When we don't go the AYCE route we go to Dakara for reasonably priced, quality sushi. I have not had a bad experience here the 3 times I've been here and am glad that the dining is more tame than other places. Good place to go to relax for a really nice mom and pop feel and mom and pop quality service. I know some reviews have said that the prices are : expensive. I disagree. Quality is not cheap but this place is definitely NOT expensive... $40-$50 feeds me and my wife just fine. read more

Perfect little hole in the wall. Quality service and friendly hospitality. We arrived after 5:00 pm, which is when they change their menu from lunch to dinner. It was quiet, but nice. Our server was especially helpful as we selected our respective entrees. Also, do not be afraid to ask for utensils. Although they are an authentic Japanese restaurant, they understand that not everyone is capable of using chopsticks. I feel that this will be my go-to restaurant for sushi and other Japanese favorites. This place is definitely worth a visit. read more

It was our first time at Dakara Sushi so we ordered their delicious seared albacore with garlic butter sauce sashimi, the ocean trout sushi, the salmon sushi, yellow tail with jalapeno sashimi, and the Dakara roll. All were superb, so tasty, an amazing artistic and beautiful extravaganza of taste and smell. Our favorite sushi restaurant thus far is Sugarfish in downtown, but Dakara is the closest thing to it. I am not a fan of sushi but I came here with my brother and sister in law because they were visiting from Japan. Everything we got was pretty good. Even the children enjoyed the tempura and tofu. I loved was the spicy tuna on crispy rice, I can eat that everyday! However they only gave us 4 for $8...i don't know i wish they had a bigger serving.. My brother was a little upset they don't have cream cheese rolls. Our bill came out to be a lot of money but every sushi place is expensive. read more

My husband and I LOVE sushi and go out 2-3 times a month to curb our cravings. That being said, we are always open to trying new places. We have lived in the area for 5 years and had not been able to find a good quality sushi restaurant around us. We used to go to downtown LA for sushi until we took a chance on Dakara and this is, now, our favorite sushi restaurant. The best thing about this place is how fresh everything is and the prices are quite reasonable. Not only is the quality of the food excellent but the staff is friendly and makes you feel welcome. Dakara gets fresh fish daily which is why we get the same experience every time we come here. We have a few items we order every time we come here but we often leave it up to Jason, the sushi chef, serve us what he thinks our palette will enjoy and he hits it on the bulls eye every single time. My husband and I always sit at the bar and typically start off with the crispy rice w/spicy tuna and seaweed salad with a large order of hot sake. We then move onto a variety of nigiri (usually specials or chefs pick because we like to try new things) as the main course and always order the 5 piece popcorn shrimp spicy tuna roll and a 2nd order of hot sake because why not? Never once have we left this place with remorse or unsatisfied because every bite is delicious as the last and worth every penny. Dakara is, most definitely, a gem and we will continue to come back here. It's getting harder and harder to find a good sushi restaurant that isn't a fusion or new age place. Sometimes I just want good, traditional sushi. And who would have thought I would have found it in the heart of Whittier. Dakara is a small place, but the sushi bar has seating for about 8. The chef is amazing, and takes pride in his work. The wait staff is also courteous and work quickly to ensure they get you what you need as soon as possible. This trip we didn't have anything from the kitchen, but judging by what I saw, I have no doubt their dinners are great. My family and I ordered from the sushi bar. We got a chirashi, and a variety of sushi, sort of going with the flow on what we decided. Not quite omakase, but along the same vein. The rice was perfect. Not overly vinegary, perfectly cooked, and held together well while transporting from plate to mouth. The fish was also fantastic, fresh and flavorful. Some like the snapper came pre-seasoned, no wasabi or shoyu required. Others didn't need anything else. Five stars to Dakara, and I'll be sure to come back to this place soon and often. read more

My husband and I frequent this little sushi place. The food is fresh, the service is excellent and the restaurant is clean. My husband requires his meals gluten free and the owner knows exactly what to do to keep his meal safe for him. We don't get that very often in Japanese Restaurants and we have been to many Japanese Restaurants over the years. They have the gluten free soy sauce which is also a rare find in Japanese Restaurants. Even their crab meat is edible so he can enjoy California rolls again after having to stay away from them for the past two years! He usually gets the mixed sushi dinner gluten free. I enjoy that as well or the mixed tempura & sushi dinner. The cut salmon rolls or rainbow rolls are also excellent.
