Another amazing visit to Dakara! Today I of course had to have oysters in a spoon. The tangy, savory salty sauce is soooo refreshing and addicting. I always have to order the Ankimo sushi. It's one of my favorite, it's also savory, a little tart with creamy texture. I had the black snapper, which is another go-to. I love the ponzu/salty basted on top. I had the tuna with Japanese salsa on top and the soy butter albacore for the first time. I have my favorites that I reorder but I try to make sure I order something new to try with each visit. The tuna was so tender and fresh. The lemony salsa on top was vibrant and flavorful. I asked for a spoon so I could scoop every drop. The albacore was also very tender and the soy butter was creamy and so light. It didn't leave like a buttery or oily residual on the palate. Everything is always delicious. Once again, I got to making small talk with another patron at the bar counter and made some delightful conversation. It's always a great time here!

I recently came here for dinner. It's a small place with lots of charm. The food is good and fresh. We ordered several rolls, tempura and a collar. The tempura had a good variety and the batter was light and crispy. All the rolls were good. My only thing was that a lot of their rolls have shrimp. My mom is allergic to shrimp so it was hard finding several rolls that didn't have shrimp. We got a collar too. Everything was delicious. Because it's a small place, they only had one person taking orders, one person helping with bussing and then two staff in the kitchen. They are attentive but can be a little slow at times. I'll definitely be coming back.

This was my first time at Dakara sushi, the service and food was great! The staff was very friendly and very attentive. The food was very fresh, tasted amazing, and came out quickly. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get some Japanese food.

Very friendly little restaurant. I had the Mixed Sushi, 8 pcs Nigirli (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, albacore, shrimp, squid, octopus and egg) and 8pcs California roll. This came with miso soup, salad and rice. I enjoyed every bite, great California roll and yummy selection of dish. My wife and daughter had the Mixed Chicken Teriyaki & Mixed Tempura which came with miso soup, salad and rice. Teriyaki was very tasty and tempura had a perfect batter and the miso soup had great favor. The little place should be on your list to visit.

This is the cutest little neighborhood spot! We know this place has been around for a long time, but since moving here in July, we were excited to see it reopen and are happy to give them our business. I'd definitely say their dinner options are a step up from the usual takeout places nearby. I really enjoyed dining in--some items, like the tuna tostada, seem better suited for enjoying on-site rather than for takeout. The quality of the fish is excellent, and I appreciate that they keep the menu concise, which ensures freshness. Anything brought in extra is featured on the specials board, which is a nice touch. The staff was incredibly lovely, and we're really happy to have this gem in the neighborhood. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!

We were a little worried when we walked in... their choice of specialty rolls is limited.. but what we got we really liked. All their fish was very fresh, and they way they serve they do not load you up with rice.. the let you taste the fish.. Good choice of beers..

Well this is just the best sushi hands down so so fresh. We have tried a lot that 4 1/2 stars to five stars and nothing come close. And I love that they are open and close during the day because they can. If you like the best just saying this is the place. read more

Woke up around 4pm after 12 hours working last night, my stomach was crying for some delicious food. So my boyfriend and I decided to yelp the nearest Sushi restaurant in Whitter. After reading all the reviews for this place, we decided to give a try. Dakara Sushi is a small Japanese restaurant located in the Twin Palms Plaza at the corner or Mills and Whittier Blvd. The restaurant doesn't have the fancy decorations or the modern design to make it attractive, however, it has the choice for Sushi Bar or Table services. The staff is super nice and friendly. The food is surprisingly delicious. We started with Crispy Rice and Spicy Tuna, and some hot green tea. I have to say, the Crispy Rice & Spicy Tuna is the bomb!!! Couldn't get enough of it. We also tried their baked crab roll, egg sushi, cruchy roll, chicken karaaga, albocore and crispy onions, and we couldn't resist the greatest taste of the Crispy Rice & Spicy Tuna that we had to order one more of it. All the food was super fresh and delicious. We ended our meal with two Tempora icecream. The cruchy outside with green tea or red bean icecream inside that melt in the mouth. . Um... yummmm. We definitely will come back again!!! This is definitly the place to go for a delicious Sushi meal!!! :) read more

My husband and I yelped for sushi because he was going to treat me just because I am an amazing wife. So, we decided to go here. The place is tiny and cute. The sushi was good too, not the best I've had but it was good. The price was reasonable, expect to spend about $50 on dinner for 2 (including desert). The service was really great, our waitress was really sweet and made some funny jokes with us. We had green tea tempura ice cream (we each had one) and can't complain about that! A small sushi place but with the biggest surprise!! Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious... Staff is friendly and overall service was great. For a sushi place in Whittier, its pretty good. I often compare local sushi places to those closer to the ocean, Little Tokyo or the west side because those places often have a wider variety of seafood to choose from like abalone and giant clam. That aside, sushi is fresh, service friendly and prices are reasonable for the quality. They don't have a huge menu, which i actually appreciate for a sushi place. Simple and to the point, with a few specials to make up the difference. Our new local go to spot for sushi either as a dine in or take out option. read more

We are so lucky to have this level of Japanese food here in Whittier! The food is great, the service is great, and that makes up for the lack of ambiance. It's a pretty plain dining room but I don't usually for ambiance , I dine for great food! My favorite dish is the yellowtail collar. The sashimi is wonderful too! Go there, be happy. read more

Wow I don't know what all the hype is. This place is not even that good nor worth your money. Iv been to many sushi places and this place is definitely in the bottom. Sushi had no flavor the shrimp tempura, salmon skin roll (which was the worst, it's literally burnt salmon skin), and the baked salmon roll (which was their best roll but I felt like it needed something else. I got the braised beef with wasubi mash potatoes which was kinda of weird. All in all the food was pretty bland. If you want tasty sushi don't come here. We went on Wednesday night and the service wasn't that good. Took us awhile to get our check and food. Atmosphere is nice and homey. So that's why I'm giving it two stars. read more

My favorite sushi place in Whittier! Actually this and Sugarfish are my two favorite places because I have yet to get a stomach ache when I eat sushi at these places. I think I have a weak stomach or something because sushi would always make my tummy hurt, but not here! Service is super friendly. My kids love it here too! Prices are reasonable. read more

This is a small establishment, service is great and menu selection is pretty good. They have specials that change on a regular basis and they have a nice beer selection as well. The portions tend to be smaller than other similar restaurants but the quality of the food is great and worth what you will pay. Try the japanese ceviche, and dont let the small jalapeno slices fool you; they have some kick. All in all, a nice small sushi restaurant that I will visit frequently in the near future. read more

Seriously such a delicious spot! Tonight I had the tempura, shishito peppers, and chicken teriyaki. ( in the past I've had their sushi which also deserves 5 stars!) I am very fortunate to have a business ridiculously close to Dakara Sushi . . . . and sometimes its easy to forget what a fantastic spot this is! I was working late, so I needed a quick, delicious, and affordable dinner. Dakara to the rescue! The food was fresh, hot, and mouth watering good! Good fresh sushi. I love how it was not overwhelming with the rice. You need to try the live shrimp it was very good (*note don't forget to eat the heads it's the best part!*). Also the crispy rice with spicy tuna and seared tuna with Japanese salsa were very good. The staff is also very friendly and social. Great service! read more

I love supporting a Mom & Pop shop. This is a diamond in the rough in the city of Whittier. If you're looking for quality sushi, this is the place. If you don't know, Chef Jason used to work at Katsuya Hollywood, a sushi restaurant that serves to hollywood stars now runs Dakara. Definitely the items to get are: albacore roll with balsamic truffle oil, yellowtail with jalapeño, avocado fries, the sea urchin nigiri, Japanese Tuna tostada, and the toro. All the flavors were amazing!! We still haven't tried everything on the menu but we will definitely come back to try more items. Staff was amazing and friendly. Felt like home. read more

I have been coming here for about 3 years. They have a great selection, a right price for exquisite sashimi. They use not your typical sushi place ingredients such as yuzu peppers and garlic butter. I love the baby black snapper and the rich yellow tail belly. The albacore is so soft. The softest most tender and juicy ever! Walked over here while getting my car serviced. Greeted very warmly as I entered. Server was attentive and friendly. I was very impressed by the attention to detail, down to even the miso soup and salad. The tempura batter was perfect, light and crispy. Sushi quality was good. Definitely a solid spot! read more

Next we ordered some appetizers; the Spicy Garlic Edamame (our usual) and the King Crab Bites (to try something new). The Spicy Garlic Edamame was tasty as usual and had a nice kick. My husband wasn't a fan of the King Crab Bites because he thought they could've used more flavor and the texture was off. Lastly, we ordered our entrees; I tried something new and ordered the Pork Curry Katsu while my husband had the Pork Cutlet Ramen (mild spice level). The Pork Curry Katsu was delicious, complex, and full of flavor. The pork katsu was crispy and cooked to perfection, which complemented the curry and rice. My husband enjoyed his Pork Cutlet Ramen as well. His only issue was that it could've used a bit more salt. It is pricey here, but they do give generous entree portions. We were very full and had some leftovers to take home for later. We had a few different servers, and they were all polite and helpful. Our food was brought out quickly, which was also great. The only issue is that the service was a bit spotty and we weren't checked on very often to see if we needed anything (for example, I didn't get any refills). It wasn't too busy either, so I'm not sure why this was the case. The interior was clean and had a casual, slightly lively atmosphere. They have blend of modern and traditional Japanese decor, which gives off a comfy/modern dining experience. There's a decent amount of seating, and you have the option of sitting at the bar or a table. Both options put you in close proximity to other diners, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. They also had different mix of music genres playing in the background. Overall we had a decent experience and plan on stopping by again soon!

We waited quite a while, assuming it would be brought out, but no one ever checked in on our table. This seems to match other reviews mentioning a lack of staff awareness and attention to customers. The staff appeared to only come by to take orders and drop off checks. We were even seated near the register, yet no one noticed that an entire meal was missing. When it was time to pay, another employee helped us. We had to point out that the ramen never came and ask for it to be removed from the bill. His response was simply, "Sorry about that, let me take it off. Here's your total." There was no real sense of concern, apology, or effort to make the situation right. Mistakes happen, but the lack of communication and customer service is what made this experience so disappointing. Staff could benefit from additional customer service training and more awareness of their guests' needs. Unfortunately, after this experience, we will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to others.

DO *** NOT *** ORDER THE BEEF TERIYAKI!! It is the worst beef teriyaki I've ever had. It is a disgrace they are even serving that with the title and as a main course. Did I mention it was horrible and very depressing? It is a messy beef stew jerky taste like I was eating dog food. (just see the picture) It is so so so sad. Not worth the $14 price at all. I should have read Diane M's review... she was spot on about that beef teriyaki (she even wrote she tried to give it to her dog and he wouldn't eat it!) If the owners are reading this, you guys need to get real beef, please. It really is an abomination. Prices are rather high considering the cut sizes/portions. Just 5 pieces of tiny cuts of octopus was $9. I get bigger slices at Kula rotating sushi for $2 and taste is not that different. The only reason I tried this place was being in the area and being a little tight on time (I would have preferred to drive out more); I didn't do research and just walked in here just looking at the high Yelp score. This is definitely one of those places where the high score is deceiving coming from just the locals who haven't experienced anything outside this city. This is NOT a place to drive miles just to try. You WILL be disappointed. It is a small "hole-in-the-wall" place with small parking lot. Another big problem I noticed when I went was how they seem to have no real servers working. The chef and female helper took the orders, so service was rather slow even though it is not a packed place. The decor is really plain... ambiance is rather sad.. too much white walls. The owners are actually Japanese, which is a super rarity, and seem friendly, but that's about it. Definitely was not satisfied for the price at all. For $70 with tip, I could have had a really nice dinner elsewhere. I will not be coming back like others... I'm still traumatized from the beef teriyaki... did I mention how bad that was?! I think you can judge for yourself just by looking at the picture without tasting it. Amazing 'little' Japanese restaurant and I would say this is one of the best Japanese food in Whittier! I put a quote on 'little' because they do have a 2nd adjacent space but only used as waiting area. I guess they did not expand because they didn't want the quality to suffer. Maya Enomoto Family, I watched an NHK special on a renown neurosurgeon Tanikawa, Rokuya practicing in Sapporo Hokkaido. He helps everyone who comes to him, and has operated over 5000 extremely difficult surgeries with 0 relapse. He's known as The Last Samurai of the Far North.
