Leo, the owner of my home.

I have had my young male cat Leo, in this clinic for several visits including, neutering, wellness, shots, ear mites and aggression. All the Vets I met are professional in the care they offer and their charges are reasonable compared to Vets in the Connecticut eastern area. Dakin rarely answers their phone but will communicate and arrange an office visit for my cat using email.

We were promptly greeted by a team of adoption coaches who showed us where to look for our desired pet which was a cat. We looked around at all the available animals but noticed that a few that were online we not out for viewing. They were happy to let us in the office area where those cats were staying in individual rooms. I found the staff friendly and professional. Never did I sense they were all about the money. We ended up picking a cat that didn't have a listed adoption fee. I was pleasantly surprised to see the fee was only $59. I thought that was extremely low considering the cat was up to date on shots, vet checked, fixed, and came microchipped. I did give an additional donation because I wanted too I was never asked or pressured into donating. The process was quick we were in & out and we left with the cat the same day. They double checked everything was fine and even made sure to apply flea treatment that was due the next day before we left. I had looked at a different shelter during my adoption journey and they denied me due to the fact I was honest and said my views on letting a cat go outside would depend on the cats preference. I could tell that Dakin was very much about the cats preference on outdoor living and they didn't hold you a contact saying the cat will only stay indoors. I was also shocked that they actually took the cats preference into consideration when they were feeding it the preferred food that was on the surrender paperwork. They actually bought the cats preferred food and gave it to us with her for no additional cost. I was not aware of this before deciding to donate money on top of my adoption fee. I'm especially glad I did make an a donation. I know the MSPCA has all their cats eating the food they prefer and they pressure you to buy that specific food from them when you adopt plus they pressure you to donate money. I would definitely adopt from Dakin again and I would love to thank Harley's family for surrendering her because she is such a sweet cat! EDIT TO ADD AN UPDATE- It's been a week Harley has adjusted so well. She had her first vet visit today to get established with a local vet. Using the free vet certificate was easy. I love the vet we picked and Harley did fantastic until the dental portion of the visit. She even tolerated the nail trim better than I expected. We picked VCA animal hospital in Lancaster. They were the closest to us and offered full services and amazing hours. The staff was friendly and they sent us home with a very generous welcome gift. I'm looking forward to having them care for Harley in the future.

We went to Dakin to get my dog nala spade. We also asked for a cone, and to get her nails clipped. The cone keeps falling off her head, because it doesn't fit. And they did a TERRIBLE job cutting her nails. Not happy.

I was walking my vivacious puppy, Duke, and noticed that the woman passing by had a really calm dog, who happened to also be around Duke's age. The woman turned out to be Hitchcock's daughter; I mentioned I was looking for puppy training; and the rest is history! Duke and I first took private lessons with Hitchcock at our home, to learn the basics of loose-leash walking. The first couple of weeks after adopting Duke, I was about to go crazy, because he was such a puller while walking. Within the first lesson, I started to regain my sanity--and dignity! I knew Essential Canine was going to be my new best friend in training Duke to be a good little pup. Since then, we've taken multiple training sessions, both indoor and outdoors, with Essential Canine. I recommend graduating from private lessons at home, where there is less distraction, to basic obedience classes hosted in the training ring at Dave's Soda and Pet Food City in Agawam. Going to a foreign location to your dog increases distraction--shoppers, toys, new scents, and even Hitchcock's own dog--offer up new challenges to overcome. This summer, Duke and I also graduated from Essential Canine's Group Obedience Class, which takes place in the picturesque Hilltop Farm in Suffield, CT. We joined a class of similarly-aged puppies who were in need of group distraction, like us. Duke, per usual, was an energy ball, but Hitchcock gave me specific techniques for working with his high energy. "You've gotta be more exciting than everything else around" was one of the nuggets I've taken with me. If he's excited by the other dogs, I just act a buffoon and redirect his attention! I also learned that he's highly treat-motivated and will do just about anything for chicken or cheese. The thing that stands out about Essential Canine, and Hitchcock as a canine massage therapist and trainer, is that she really works to customize the training experience for each dog/human team.

Over the years, I continue to be impressed with Missy's enthusiasm for what she does. She just loves teaching people about dog behavior, and it shows in every class. Also, she is incredibly helpful with any questions one might have about a dog. She asks questions, makes a thoughtful suggestion, and then follows up the next week with a "how did that work out?" Other classes we have tried left us feeling unsatisfied as the trainers didn't have the level of commitment and enthusiasm that a good teacher needs. Another thing is that, during class, Missy will notice something I am doing and bring it to my attention. It is amazing what a difference changing a simple behavior on the owner's part can make in the dog's. I have no hesitation in recommending Missy for any class, from puppy kindergarten to advanced training.

After the 2nd day I asked how the training was going and Sergio told me that they "wouldn't begin training until the 2nd week bc the first week is just to get the dog acclimated". After day 3 we pulled our dog from their program. She was dehydrated after each day there and on day 3 she came out looking soaked and Sergio told me "she had played in the snow". When she hopped in my car, her paws were disgustingly muddy and she smelled horrid. I brought her home and bathed her and she had a huge gash on her nose. When my husband called to let Sergio know we were pulling her and that we were happy to pay for the 3 days but wanted a refund for the rest, Sergio told him that those 3 days were $125/each bc they had done such intensive training each day. I reached out to see what training was completed w our pup since I was told nothing was done but nobody got back to me. Highly do NOT recommend.
