This was my first time visiting any of the bars in Encinitas, and my friend had recommended this place, so I was really excited to check it out. The line was out the door probably due to Halloween, and the cover was $20, which is on the pricier side. I'm not sure how busy it gets on a regular weekend, but it was definitely packed when we arrived. The space itself was great, with good music, lots of people dancing, and a lively crowd overall. I really enjoyed my experience and would definitely consider coming back on another weekend.

I'd obviously stumbled into a spot I'd normally not frequent, but hey... I was already sitting on a bar stool and ordering an Old Fashioned! Friendly staff and decent prices. The booths to the right were a little worn, but as this place is more of a club than bar - that stands to reason. When the girls each asked for a pint glass of ice to pour their seltzers into, I'd swear that I saw the bartender scoop the ice directly with the glasses, rather than using a scoop to pour ice into them. A huge no-no. Never risk a chip of glass into the ice well. Always use a metal scoop. Our friends went the next day and said it wasn't the case with them, so I hope I'm wrong. If not, perhaps an OSHA refresher training course is needed.

There are two bathrooms next to each other, one clearly labeled "Women," and the other labeled as an all-gender restroom, which should be open to anyone. We got in line, and when someone came out of the all-gender bathroom, we assumed it was fine to use. But as soon as we went in, a security guard aggressively opened the door and started yelling at us. It was honestly really unsettling. He claimed it was a men's bathroom, even though the sign clearly said all-gender. To make things worse, a random person walked into the bathroom while we were inside, which made the whole situation even more uncomfortable. The security guard then blamed the confusion on the owner, saying they "forgot to put up a men's sign," which didn't make any sense given the labeling. Overall, this was one of the worst experiences my friends and I have had. The situation felt disorganized, the security guard was extremely unprofessional, and the staff didn't seem to care at all. We didn't even get the chance to try the drinks or food because this happened right away. I would not recommend coming here. It seems like they don't have things properly managed, and the experience was just awful from the start.

Good service goes a long way with me. This place doesn't cut it. The 99% of the male staff are kinda thugs and jerks. I know good customer service. I grew up in Las Vegas. Half my family works in the hospitality industry. I served cocktails all during college. So this isn't my first rodeo. Newsflash--I'm the customer that tips large if you aren't an ass. So, major fail bartenders. MAJOR. After (3) drinks, I left. The last guy was just a dick. Fat older dude, charges me a dollar more for the third drink as he had for the first two. I'm not a drunken idiot. That's just ripping off the customer. I tipped well for both the first two, so that was just classless. Please remember not all your customers are drunken idiots. Some of us might treat you right if you all didn't look so pissed off to be working there. So sorry, but I served and I have an MBA, I say if you can't hang, QUIT. Because you suck if you are just a dick all night. My heart bleeds for you since I know how much weed and booz money you make in a shift. You know, I get it--high volume of customers. However, do you really think that a drunken 22 year old skank is going to pay more than a sober polite forty year old? None of you would last a day in Vegas with that attitude. Tall dude is arrogant and only serves the pretty ladies. Mustache dude looks miserable and would be more handsome if he shaved & smiled. Fat old dude, you are just rude. Enjoy the extra dollar that you tacked on to my last drink. Classy--NOT! Tacky and dishonest. However, its not like you're the sexy one, so however you have to scam a customer, just go for it, before you have to start working at Chili's. You're just damn lucky I was raised right and still left you a tip knowing full well I just got hustled. FYI--I'm a fan of dive bars. Safe to say that any dive bar I've been to from NYC, DC, Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, LA, New Orleans, Key West, SF, hell even Knoxville, TN, has better dive bars than The Saloon in Encinitas. You now has the distinction of being the worst dive bar ever. The appeal of a dive bar is that people tend to be down to earth and easy going. I may even write a few other reviews on travel sites and bar publications, because EVERYONE deserves to enjoy their hard earned money at a place where treating a customer right is valued. Here's the irony. I use to work for the attorney that handled legal matters for the bar and I've had the pleasure of meeting the owner a time or two. He use to say, come see my bar. It's great. LMAO! Dale, you have a good dive bar, but it's just a hot mess and absolutely NO fun. Never will be back. I'm not going to start paying compliments just because they had a guy w/ itunes on his laptop. The 'part owner' of this place is not only a grade A douchebag bro, but a huge coward as well. He was blatantly rude to my gf--she was reaching for some napkins and he threw em out of the way so she couldn't reach. WHO DOES THAT? Simply bc she stepped a little behind the bar to grab the napkins. This was AFTER the bartender (Joe) told her she could grab napkins/limes if she wanted some. So her bf tells her, that if the guy disrespects her again, to let him know. All of a sudden, 2 bouncers grab him and tell him he has to leave. Seriously? So your a-hole boss can be rude to his paying customers..and if we don't like it, WE get thrown out?? One of the bouncers even apologized, and said that he knows my friend didn't do anything..but the douche is a 'part owner' so they had to do their job. Oh, that's lovely. Go elsewhere for your dive bar experience. After reading all the negative reviews, I don't even know why it was as crowded as it was. Wake up, Encinitas! Oh, and he also came out AFTER throwing us out..to talk his smack. The entire time, cowering behind the 2 bouncers, mind you. His employees even looked a little embarassed for him. This place is great, yeah you have to wait in line Fridays and Saturdays and Mondays when it's busy, but get there early and you won't have that problem. And now they have a DJ almost every night of the week which is awesome, gives the ladies a place to dance(and there's alot of them).The bouncers are awesome and the bartenders are ok, drinks are good and priced right. Iron Mon T sounds bitter because he had to wait in line or maybe insulted the bouncers and was trying to be a hard ass. Of course he will come on here and trash talk and insult people because he doesn't have enough BALLS to do it in person. I'M a local there and have been going there for years and I know who he refers to the big mexican dude, he is the nicest one there, the bouncers there are awesome and chill (execpt for maybe the little blonde surfer looking dude) but also take care of business and don't put up with any SHHHHHHH. I actually thought this place was full of cocky stuck up self centered racist pricks! Then i read a lot of reviews. I was right. Their service sucks ass! They are so rude! They should really be shut down! I work for customer service so i know a thing or two in how to treat people! Some short white girl and some tall guy with brown hair are just total assholes! My girlfriend tried buying one drink and they ignored her and skipped her and just refused to acknowledge her! It was her first drink of the night. So no she wasn't drunk. She leaned over to get a straw after i finally decided to go to the end of the bar and get her a drink, and the girl started talking shit to her. We were surprised because one of the bar backs said it was fine to grab one, because his hands were full. All in all i do not recommend this place. D street has a better vibe of people. read more

Don't bother going if your not from san d and look dirty enough for the place. After travelling the midwest and west coast for a month i have never had a problem with my UK ID until now. The ignorance of some people is unbelievable. The first time I came here was during happy hour. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a heavy pour! Second time I came it was still early in the night before the long line but my friends and my drink literally tasted like water. We definitely could not taste any of the vodka. We felt like we just wasted 30 bucks! However, this bar does have a cool atmosphere that is very different then the other bars around town. read more

Beyond that, nothing inside really stood out compared with some of the other speakeasies I've visited around San Diego. Still, it's a cute experience and worth checking out at least once, especially if you enjoy hidden entrances and themed bars.

The staff is incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere is super chill making it the perfect spot to escape the fair madness and unwind.

I valed my parking and sat at the end of the bar with my lab top to work and relax Overall experience - overpriced, tone deaf, entitled servers, good cocktails not exceptional. I come from the world's best industry players and the staff here revolve around bias - completely devoid of any worldly experience or foresight. If you want to pay an arm and a leg for mediocrity sold at a premium come here. Otherwise spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

The first night after arriving in town around 11pm and DC's was busy. Lori was our bartended and she was great. Came back the next night around 9pm and the place was fairly empty which gave us a chance to utilize the pool tables and jukebox. Lori was there again and made us feel very welcome. Banana pudding shots, anyone? Don't knock 'em until you try 'em!

I love to go here for The Lounge alone, without stopping in Harney's, but it's a great place to go when waiting to be seated at Harney's. They also have their own food access so you could always just order through the speakeasy itself. The drinks here are fantastic! Everything off the menu is delicious but I love that you can request a drink with just offering a specific liquor/flavor palette. The bartenders clearly have amazing talent creating delicious craft cocktails. You won't be disappointed!

And our server was fantastic. So why, you might ask, only 4 stars in my review. Two reasons: 1). Management has prohibited giving a splash of a beer for someone to sample. Bottom line is that I wanted to order a pint of beer, but I wanted a splash of a couple of beers to try to make my decision. They refused, saying that one must buy a 5oz taster if one wants to taste the beer. I find that policy offensive. In the end I bought a taster to taste the Chuuurch, and then bought an additional pint after. It just seems nickel and dimey, and would be asking to an ice cream place not allowing one to sample their ice creams before buying a cone. I hope management reconsiders this policy. 2. My wife got the Hot Mess Fries and was disappointed not only in the flavor, but also in the misleading advertising. On the menu it specifically said that there was bacon in the fries, but in fact what they put on the fries was either chunks of ham or "Canadian bacon" (which as we all know is a very different thing from "bacon"). If they were or of regular bacon, the kitchen should have told the server this so he could have asked her if she wanted ham as a substitute. And, of they always use ham instead of bacon, them the menu needs to be changed to reflect that.
