[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great service, delicious food, and if you get to sit by the window, you can enjoy the view to the bridge and the water of the western upper branch of the lake of the Ozarks![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our group of seven had all different food orders and they started coming out within eight minutes after we placed the order! I must have is there garlic cheese curd! And my tenderloin dinner was delicious! I will be back for sure!

Cost of food for evening meal has risen here and at home no blame ever intended. The atmosphere is so welcoming and the water is calming

The only thing I've had here is the tenderloin, which says a lot for it.

The Hickory House has been around a long, long time. It still looks like the old road house it…read moreonce was and is clearly divided between 'the bar' and 'the buffet'. There is no menu at Hickory House and little decor and no ambience, you come for the buffet, that's what you get. For $10.99 plus a drink, you will get the most awesome ribs you will find around Pomme de Terre lake. The fried chicken is perfect and crisp and juicy without being greasy. Hot, spiced, boiled shrimp, which I hadn't seen done right in years. I was in heaven! There was also Catfish, but I'm not a fan, so I didn't have any although many diners were filling their plates with the filets. Also on the buffet were a couple of vegetables of the day, when I went it was corn on the cob and fried okra. I didn't understand why they would put out whole, foil wrapped baked potatoes and halved, 'twice baked' potatoes as the only two starch selections. That could have been thought out a bit better. But you can hardly go wrong with a baked potato, so that was okay. The twice baked were very, very dry, so I passed on that. Decent salad selection; green salad, a couple of mayonnaise based vegetable salads, some fresh fruit and for dessert, banana pudding or the sheet cake of the day. The cake of the day I went was a deep, dark chocolate with a cream cheese glaze. We got there early, so that cake was still warm from the oven when the put it out. I couldn't pass it up. On an interesting side note, about two years ago, Hickory House had "The Kentucky Headhunters" as part of a July 4th weekend celebration. For whatever reason, Mr. Man and I decided not to go at the last minute. All through dinner, we berated ourselves for passing that up. It's easy to see that when they can afford a live act in the bar side, everything on the buffet side gets pushed against the wall or carted off to make room. I'm sure they rocked it and to have heard "Dumas Walker" in that intimate setting would have been sweet! Ah, regrets... The vibe of the place is awesome, the food was very good, the service and friendliness of the staff was exceptional. We will definitely be going there again. The place opens around 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

We ordered the ribeye (med. rare), baked potato, green beans and a dinner salad and the crab stuffed tilapia, mashed potatos, green beans, with a Caeser salad. All were cooked very well, delivered to our table hot with attentive service. No drinks tonight - but, based on past experience, the bar is solid! If I could give partial stars, I would rate Baxter's in the range of 4.25 stars or so. Consistently above avverage!

We ended up only going for dessert, and I'm glad we did. We got the Baxter's Dessert Platter, which had three cakes to share! Just an honest heads up on cost: entrees range from $22-75 on average, which was more than I expected going in. Combined with that, the dining room was packed (kinda hard to get a good look at everything) but the interior felt pretty basic for what you're paying for a plate. On the plus side, the bathrooms had some nice amenities, which was a small but appreciated touch. Overall: We loved our great dessert platter, the nice water view, but the value didn't quite match the price point for food. If you go, I'd consider treating it more as a dessert and drinks spot with a view rather than a full dinner destination unless you're prepared for that cost!

It was another 30 minutes before he returned to take our meal order. After waiting over two hours, we still had not received our food. We were told the kitchen was backed up, but during that time we watched multiple tables (including several larger parties) that were seated after us receive their meals before we did. The service throughout the restaurant seemed very disorganized. On at least five occasions, servers brought food to the wrong tables and walked around asking guests, "Is this yours?" trying to figure out where it belonged. After more than two hours of waiting with no meals, we asked for to-go boxes and our bill. We ended up paying for our food before we ever received it so we could leave and get back to our boat. As we were leaving, the dock attendant asked how everything was. When I told her the service was awful and that we still hadn't eaten after two hours, her response was, "I'm not surprised." Unfortunately, this was an extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. We understand restaurants can get busy, but the lack of communication, organization, and timely service made this an experience we won't be repeating.

We came in dockside w our boat- a security kid was standing his post right near the closed pool and bar area. He checked all of our IDs and bc our daughter was under 21, he had to place 2 large permanent marker "Xs" on her hands. As he did this, he stated, "Pool is for adults only, but the pool is closed." What?? Why the big Xs and ID check if we're just going up for dinner... and the place is empty? The food was decent. Drinks were good but expensive especially for the lack of alcohol in them. We didn't want to pay for bottled water either- no free waters there like every other restaurant. Waitress was great although she was the only one helping the outside patrons (inside was empty). We encouraged her that she was doing a good job since we could tell she was running. All in all, we may stop here again since we are down in the area frequently, but there are better options we will choose 1st. (And as we left, we saw the security kid sitting up top at the bar in the restaurant ... so glad my daughter "gets" to have these big black Xs on her hands for 2 days now. Just not necessary.)
