Our work with Elvis started at the end of a major rewire. We had a basement that needed sheetrock around a large existing room as well as some new framing. Elvis' estimate was fair and reasonable: he clearly knew how to think about the work, to see around corners I couldn't see around, and I was confident in hiring him that he would do a good job. It wasn't until he started working that I realized how much I'd underestimated both the project's complexity and Elvis' skills. Turns out a lot of the framing was out of level. That the wire runs had created many complicated issues. And that some of the things we had only partly thought through would take a lot more time and effort than we'd thought. Other contractors might have handled these challenges differently, but Elvis approach was completely unselfish and focused on the best outcome for the project. He took every challenge as an opportunity to make things better. Turns out, he's also an excellent carpenter, so that entailed everything from making beautiful built-in work surfaces to finding ways to incorporate the huge redwood beams in our ceilings and walls into the finished work. He even suggested and implemented a lovely stucco finish over the perfectly-installed sheetrock to bring things together. The result is that what started as a serviceable basement is now a lovely cellar. What's important about that, beyond the craftsmanship, is that the outcomes are really all due to Elvis' great eye and his patient, thoughtful work. Elvis is a master craftsman. I can't recommend him highly enough. And we'll always be thankful to him for his lovely work.

I had to chase Russ down just to get the subcontractor's contact info--(don't forget, I paid half of the shower cost direct to the subcontractor when it was already in the budget and was Russ's responsibility but I needed the job done). Russ blew all the money I gave him and it was NOT on my job because he barely bought anything. When I finally called the subcontractor, he told me Russ NEVER paid him the other half--what a shock. The subcontractor promised to get back to me in a week, then promptly disconnected his phone. And I'm sure you can guess Russ quit answering my calls and texts. So not only did Russ steal money from me, but he also ripped off his own subcontractor and left me with a total mess. Russ is the definition of a crook. He'll leave you with unfinished work, unpaid contractors, and a pile of garbage that costs you even more to fix. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. Worst experience ever.

A week goes by with no phone call, so I call him-- but no answer... and his vm is full. so I waited a couple more days and called him again, still no answer; so this time I followed up with a text asking if he was still interested in helping us out with our handyman needs and he replied yes and to let him know when we would like him to come help. Perfect! I called him when I got back to Phoenix and he didn't answer (of course), so I texted asking when he was available and he asked if he could schedule me in for between 1-2pm on Thursday. Yes I replied, then I texted asking him a couple questions about estimates for hanging large blinds and included photos. He ignored my texts that night about the quote/estimate altogether, so I texted asking if he received my messages requesting an estimate to which he replied "Yes, I'll look at them when I'm at your house." (Not really an answer or estimate- kind of slippery). So today rolls around and of course I'm at home waiting on this handyman to show up (of course I organized my day around him) 14 minutes before he was due for our appointment, he cancels. He says: "Can we meet Saturday 9-930? Caught up in work." (No apology for the inconvenience, or wasting my time, just a crap text). Me: "You know Gary, let me talk to my boyfriend about it. After reading your Yelp! reviews we expected a little more professionalism to be honest." He says: "Well I've been sick for the last month and been out of commission. I've been trying to catch up on my jobs. Sorry if you feel that way. I know I can't make everyone happy. Me: "It's not a feeling. You cancelled 15 minutes before you were scheduled to show up and have been unresponsive and not very communicative with me. Those are facts. While I understand it's impossible to make everybody happy, you could do a much better job by being a little more professional. Then-- radio silence. Gary, you can make customers happy; how about apologizing when you're wrong and unprofessional instead of #1: making excuses, then #2: blaming me, or acting like I'm the one with unrealistic expectations when I've accommodated the date and time YOU chose and then flaked on. I manage over 25 LTR & STR properties and was hopeful that I might have found my go-to company based on the recommendations I received for AZ Maintenance. I received quotes for work to be done on 2 properties. Not a huge job ($3000) but a solid variety of tasks that allowed me to see if this is an experienced company that can do the jobs well and reliably (installing ceiling fans, bathroom exhaust fans, weather-stripping exterior doors, tightening a few loose toilets). They said that it would take 4 days to complete our job. So I waited 3 weeks until they could scheduled us in. At the end of the 4 days, this was what was completed: 1 ceiling fan installed in a bedroom. Nothing else. 4 days to install a ceiling fan? The injury to insult was the total lack of communication from the office. Not one single email, text or phone call after I left multiple messages as to what the status of our job was. We had tenants moving in the following week so I sent an detailed email to cancel and explained what went so terribly wrong with this job. No reply. Just an invoice for the 1 ceiling fan. I found a different handyman who singlehandedly completed the entire scope of work in 2 days! without complaint or fanfare and $840 cheaper. He is now my go-to guy for all my repairs and remodeling jobs.
