A buddy and I had a rather unpleasant experience recently. We stopped in late night for a beer and some food. Service is fine. Beer is cold and bartender was nice. We order a few apps and eventually the food comes out.. not a big deal. We proceed to eat our chicken quesadilla and I notice something is off. I turn the food over and see that the tortilla is all moldy! Ugh!! It was utterly disgusting. Since we had paid our tab already we just chose to finish our drinks and leave. I understand that things happen sometimes but this NEVER should have left the kitchen! Needless to say I shall not visit this place again. read more

First time here and I have to say the food is good. my mother and i had mini ruebens and the buffalo chicken dip. the atmosphere is ok its very loud which i did expect. service was good our waitress was very nice and did recommend items on the menu. parking outside was very good. bathrooms were clean which is a big deal for me. we did get approached by a drunk guy and he almost put his finger in our food as he asked us what we were eating. thats why i am giving it 4 stars. read more

A big group of us have been twice now and have had decent/okay experiences both times. The food each time has been pretty good - solid bar/irish food. I've had some soup, and on my most recent visit, I had the Club Sandwich with Grilled Chicken. The servers are always friendly and helpful - and overall, the dining experience is pretty good. My main issue stems from the reservation/lack of reservations. When we went last March, we were told no reservations - so, as a group of 7, waited in the bar area until a table opened up. No problem there. When planning for this visit, my boyfriend called ahead, spoke to a manager, and he made a reservation for 8 of us for this past Saturday. After some back and forth (once we got there), we were told that they don't take reservations. To be fair, our group waffled back and forth between wanting to sit in the bar area to wanting to sit in the dining room - but I believe we were told again that there is no reservation system (despite a few tables in the bar area having a "reserved" sign on them....) So, the food is fine and the experience is okay, too. BUT, I think it would be a benefit to allow large groups to reserve tables. read more

I went here for happy hour with my boyfriend and a few coworkers after work. It's what you would expect from an Irish pub: dimly lit, crowded, and overall nothing too special. It's self-seated, so I was surprised that we were able to find seats at the bar right away. It was difficult to get the bartenders' attention right away since it was busy when we went, but they were friendly and got our drinks to us promptly. We ordered the bar platter which consisted of various fried foods. Again, nothing special, but easy to eat and easy to share amongst your friends. read more

For a "Wanna-be Bennigan's" style pub, we were turned away for not having sleeves. Owner lies to our faces and says it's been a rule since they opened, which I know it hasn't. Not to mention there "bread & butter policy" which they wouldn't budget on was a cheap laminated printout that was taped up to the outside of the door. Could have made an exception in the name of good customer service, but they didn't....especially since the place was empty. Great way to lose business guys. You're a local beer spot with bar food... not a 5star restaurant. Comical at best, don't even bother going. Go to the Franklin Steak House instead. read more

I've been here four times prior to today and always had a decent meal, not the case this time. I may have the worst hamburger ever. It was so greasy that the lettuce and tomatoes were sliding off, and Grease was dripping off the saturated bun. They took the steak off the menu a while ago which was my favorite menu item. The waitress however was good and the beer was cold. That's the only thing I say good about it. read more

Tried it for a second time. The corned beef and cabbage egg rolls were good. Very oily. My cheese steak was tasty but could have used more filling. The star was the Guiness cheddar burger with sautéed onions. Very good but overall still a solid three stars in my opinion. :) read more

I love this place for a good sit down and have a drink with some snacks kind of place. I had their version of a Dark & Stormy and gotta say, Bahama Breeze's version was more memorable by far. But their food is second to none. I had the fish & chips. Pretzels with beer cheese is the best! Portions run large, be aware. Caveat: The seating is self, so on busy nights it can be a pain. read more

Summary: A busy, but CROWDED bar with great service and decent food. I went here last night after practicing all day until about 9 p.m. I was exhausted and I had never stopped in here before. So while being exhausted and thirsty, why not get a drink/food? I was a sweaty mess and sat at the bar, ordered a Blue Moon for a drink and Guiness Cheddar Burger. The drink was cold, the burger was tasty. The lettuce and tomato felt a bit like an afterthought on it, but whatever... it's bar food. No one will stare you down for not eating the veggies. The fries were kind of "meh" though for how good the burger was. Parking was a bit of a madhouse. People were hanging out and blocking a space "for their friend." Thankfully I quickly found another, and then this same group of people asked me if I could move to a different part of the bar (while I was eating) so that they could have more space for their friends. Tough shit. They had the bartender ask me, and I just glared at him. I'll be back, but probably only because I'm down the street so often. read more

Preface: This is a reluctant four stars. Seriously. I had 'em at 3, but when I looked back over my review, there were a number of things I did like, so i bumped them up from 3 to 4 stars. I'm left with this feeling - why? Why do I feel the need to give three stars to Thatcher's? It's not really that complicated. I want Thatcher's to be something that it is not meant to be - a truly authentic local Irish Pub. In reality, Thatcher McGhee's is an Irish Themed Restaurant & Bar - made to suit the needs of the demographic it serves. Us. Americans. When I look at Thatcher's that way, they are actually doing a pretty good job. They got most of the details, only missed a few. In any event, I had first stopped by when the restaurant was new. I've been back several times now. It's really tough to get a seat in the bar area, pretty much any night of the week. Can't fault a place for being popular! But the food is so unremarkably average. It's just... sooo... "okay I guess". On my most recent visit, I tried the the Guinness beef stew. It was... okay, I guess. I didn't finish it. I asked the server what cut of meat they used in the stew, I think the answer was "cubed beef". They did offer a lamb stew which may have been more interesting, but the server steered me towards the Guinness beef stew. They offer a Shepard's pie, but it's made with beef, which I think makes it a cottage pie (shepard's pie really should be lamb). On a previous occasion, I asked for Chef sauce, they didn't have it. But, they did have my Coleman's mustard. Trifle? What's trifle? It's the little things... Long story short, I have dined at TM maybe 4 or 5 times, and haven't had anything that I would really recommend. Nothing was really bad. But there was nothing to write home about, either. Pluses: They pour a nice pint of Guinness. They have a professional bar staff. Nothing worse than poser bartenders trying to make a quick buck. These guys are the real deal. And, they made me the best hot tottie I've every had. Even better than I make for myself... and I've made 'em a bunch. What to order: A Pint of Guinness and a Corned Beef Sandwich. Those were excellent. Note: If TM is still standing after March 17th I'll stop in at that point and give you another update. If anyone is able to stop in on Paddy's Day, please post pictures of the carnage, I'll enjoy them online from my dimly lighted study. read more

This review is based on the Bosc Pear Salad alone! I was put on to this spot while working on a shoot in Wannaque. I had to take the lunch orders for all crew members and the producers raved about the Bosc Pear Salad with Salmon. It sounded amazing so I ordered one for myself. When ordered with Salmon, this salad comes out to about $20 after tax but it's worth every single penny! The greens are fresh and the pears are sweet and grilled to perfection. The salmon... is well salmon and it a great compliment to the other flavor in the salad. Also, the staff was always very pleasant and timely with our orders. read more

A fun pub. Great place for happy hour after work. Got there at 5 30 on a Wednesday. It was hopping. Parking lot was full but there is lots of street parking. Nice big bar area. Good draft beer selection. Free sandwiches and hot food on the side during happy hour. Also ordered wings and German pretzel sticks. The pretzels were amazing! Id skip the wings next time. Ill definitely be going back. It was only 3 days old and was already running with great service and nice atmosphere. read more

We always have our kids so I can't comment on the pub portion of this place but my husband & I absolutely love the food here. We are never disappointed. They have your typical items on the kids menu, our kids have never complained. My husband loves their marinated skirt steak, I love the shepherds pie. They make perfect bloody Mary's. Smaller than the other two Thatcher locations, this is a decent place to grab a drink or two (they have plenty of beers on tap). I've never had an issue coming here and sitting at the bar, but the dining experience is a different story. The food is just okay - it's what you'd expect from a pub. I was hoping the boneless wings would be better, and the Thatch fries, which are topped with cheese, bacon and ranch, are good but the fries were a bit under-cooked. The rest of the food we tried (nachos, chicken fingers, etc.) was alright but again, nothing to write home about. During our most recent visit, the server was rather short and unfriendly towards our group, and I had to keep going to the bar to get refills on my water because she was MIA during most of our time there. They have free trivia on Thursday nights which is a fun time, and I'd be willing to try out their paint and sip night as well (last Tuesday of every month - $40 gets you supplies and unlimited wine). read more

Love this place.. Very good. Had the turkey burger, delicious. Setting is cute. It's very very good. Sweet potatoes fries are also very good. It's not totally amazing but well worth the trip and for the price, it's great. Easy and fun. Also, good drinks!!! FYI.. The Moscow mule is served in a large glass, about double the drink as when it's served in the copper mug. So, it doesn't look as cute, but you get probably double the amount. read more

Unbelievable this joint. Went in here a few weeks back and was caught in the middle of a massive bar fight with my elderly father. He could barely stand and was knocked to the floor and trampled. I was smashed over the head with a bottle by a woman who proceeded to tell my father that he was a "waste of oxygen and hopefully never walks again." I have NEVER in my life experienced such fear in a public establishment. Fortunately, we escaped with some bruising and a painful headache from the force of the bottle. Visited Thatchers on Friday late afternoon for early meal with my daughter, her boyfriend and my husband. Oddly we were going to cloverleaf on Bloomfield Ave about 2 miles away but decided thatchers was more convenient. When you walk in you enter a huge squared bar but not anyone to greet you so we walk literally around the whole bar and u have to ask if there's a hostess and server says sit anywhere. Our server Dan made sure to inform us that it was his first day on the job and did great. Ordered buffalo chicken dip and the pretzels with cheese sauce which was ok nothing great. Overpriced kale salad was ok and the southwestern burger nothing spectacular and overlooked. Worst thing ordered were the fish bites with spicy dipping sauce. Sooooo soggy not crisp at all just gross. My husband had a bottle of Budweiser which he was served had a huge chip in the lip of the bottle and had to walk back to the bar himself to bring to bartenders attention. No free beer for that. I do wish we sat at the bar because a woman cane around with a tray of sandwiches for happy hour and had chicken carbonara and frank and beens at the door on sterno which looked better than what we ordered and paid for. Probably won't go back. I'll keep original plan and go to Cloverleaf. read more

Tried the brunch special today and it was a lovely time spent on a Saturday! For $10.99 I got steak and eggs any style. I got mine poached and it came with a side of fruit. A substitution of salad for the fries and toast was made and I was a happy camper!! read more

Thatcher McGee's was not too bad. The food was decent and beer was good. I went on a Wednesday evening and the place was packed. The service wasn't the best but it wasn't horrible either. If you're looking for a decent pub to grab a beer and some pub food it's worth a visit. read more

Dinner here was fabulous. The portions are big, ambiance is loud and vivacious. The drinks are also delicious. I got the Tuesday special cocktail, midnight kiss and loved it. Good place for happy hour, groups, and kids. Will definitely be back. read more

4 stars just for 2 gentlemen there. 1 I think was possible the owner and another gentleman who I am sorry I forgot to get his name. I ordered a dish that I was not happy with but figured I would make of it what I could. As my waiter ignored me, to my surprise 1 of these gentlemen stopped what he was doing came over and asked if everything was ok As I explained to him, he was kind very courteous, this was followed up with second gentleman coming by to see what he could do to make me happy. It is hard to find good customer service these days and it made my morning that at Thatchers on Passaic it exists it in some of its staff. I will give them another try just because of this experience and interactions with these 2 gentlemen They replaced my dish with a smile. This out weighed my waiters lack of attentiveness and subpar service. Thank you again to those two. read more

We've been here on a couple of times. Twice for dinner & once for the bar. As a bar it's ok, if you just want to grab a drink & maybe an appetizer. For dinner I wouldn't recommend it because the food is mediocre & the prices are high. It's seat yourself serve, but don't come on a Saturday night because you'll never get a table. What are you supposed to do just stand around & wait for a table to open up? Yeah no. We recently had dinner there during the week only because it's close by & there was too much traffic to go anywhere further away. So yes we were able to get a table. I went to Thatcher's after winning a Gift Certificate. I was excited to try it . It was a really cool atmosphere and the food was really good. I had a Reuben and it was great as well as the fries. It was also my first time, trying an Irish Coffee, which was good but had a kick. It's a really cool place to just kick back, relax and have a fun night with friends. Appearance: Thatcher McGhee's has a very inviting appearance. The multifaceted apartment-style exterior creates the feeling that the food is what you'd find at mom's house and the atmosphere is what you'd find in an Irish pub. Inside, the waiting area is quite small and there were limited seats available while waiting. Since it is still the restaurant's opening week, my assumption is that the hype will die down and the seating will soon be more readily available. I'm sure the owners would much have you wait in the bar and spend a few bucks there while you're waiting for a table, too. Environment: This restaurant is LOUD. Sitting with a group of three others, I had no choice but to uncomfortably raise my voice at times in order to have a full conversation. Staff: I'll chalk it up to it being the restaurant's first week, but the staff was far from perfect. The hostess seemed almost annoyed to be doing her job and it rubbed off on the customers. Our waitress also left mid-order in order to go help another table. However, the food came out relatively quickly given the number of people inside of the restaurant. Food: I ordered the Rachel (my namesake!), which is a pastrami sandwich with Russian dressing, Swiss, and sauerkraut (though I opted to go without the kraut). This sandwich might just have been the best pastrami I have ever eaten. I highly recommend it! The Nitty-Gritty: This restaurant doesn't take reservations, which is a definite turn-off. When there's an hour and a half wait and the waiting area is no bigger than a college dorm room, I'd much rather prefer to show up at a prearranged time than be in a crowded room. Last Remarks: I'll give it some time before I return to Thatcher McGhee's. Perhaps they will have worked out some kinks by then. read more

The newest of the Thatcher McGhee's locations is a beautiful and spacious venue. Rectangle bar surrounded by booths makes for a lively happy hour and sports crowd. Bar service for both food and drinks has been top notch each visit and keeps you coming back for more. Plenty of tv's viewable from the bar area no matter where you're seated. Definitely a great place to check out if you are in the area. read more

I am a regular at the thatcher's in denville which i love. I've been to this location a few times now, it's still really great love the atmosphere and the food is top notch, but this location has less bar tables/booths in the bar area to sit at so its kind of impossible to get a seat. The crowd picks up after 9 and it gets pretty ridiculously crowded. The parking lot is horrendously small, people were having to be parked on the street down corners and anywhere you could find. I went early for dinner around 7:30 on a Friday and drove around for 15 minutes before finding somewhere to finally park. The entire bar area is self seating which I actually do kind of like because if u see people getting up u can grab their table, but like I said previously there's not as many spots to sit as there is at the denville location. The crowd was a good mixture of different ages, a lot of people in their 20's when it got later. Before 9 it was some families and an older crowd. At the denville location they have a band on Fridays and a dj on Saturday, this location didn't seem to have anywhere for a live band to play. They did have a dj on Friday night, but they didn't go on until 10. so that means people play the jukebox, and I was not thrilled about the song selection for the evening before the dj started. But I guess that's not a fault of the establishment more the people who chose the songs. I think the dj should start at 9. The food is some of the best around. Same as the denville location, I haven't had anything yet that I don't like. It is a tad pricey here, but I think it's worth it there's not many places like this to go around here. The wait staff where we sat was very slow, but it could've just been that one waiter, we were also sitting in a corner, but still. Took way too long to ask for things and then by the time they brought out what u asked for u didn't want it anymore. All in all a great place to have dinner/drinks and just hang out with friends. Laid back atmosphere but also much nicer than a dive bar. It's kind of a perfect in-between mixture of causal laid back sports bar and a lounge. But if your deciding between this location or denville, go to denville. read more

Went there for the first time today for a Saturday afternoon lunch and a few pints with my dad. The bartender was friendly and attentive, I ordered a Cricket Hill Breakfast ale and he let me try it first and told me that the brewery was in town. Cool to know. My dad ordered the Taste of Ireland platter (Shepherd's pie, bangers & mash, chicken pot pie, beef and lamb stews) and we overall very happy with it. He did say the beef in the stew was a bit tough, but the rest was very good. I ordered the chicken pot pie - it was huge (i'll be heating up leftovers for dinner tonight)! It was very good, had a nice puff pastry on the top and the filling could have used a tiny bit more flavor but it had big chunks of good white meat chicken. Really can't complain! We were there in the early afternoon, so it wasn't noisier than any other bar and there were mostly families in the dining area. The bathroom was very clean, and we all know what that can say about a restaurant. Glad we went there, we'll be back! read more

First weekend open so it's hard to say. Waited at least an hour before being seated. No room at the very packed bar to sit or get a drink. Looks like a popular place for the area and found out that they have locations in Pompton Lakes and Denville. Nice menu of burgers and some traditional Irish selections and a late night bar menu. This Irish pub and eatery is large but very homey. The exterior is very attractive and unlike most other restaurants. The wings were excellent. They use a batter that is lighter and not as thick as the traditional wings and the guiness bbq sauce was tasty as well. I got the Taste of Ireland since I wanted to sample traditional Irish dishes. It included Chicken pot pie, bangers and mash, lamb and beef shepherd pie. They were all pretty good. I'm not Irish so I can't say how it compares to the real thing. The banger was tasty and came with two. The chicken BLT unfortunately was a disappointment. The chicken was very dry. I wouldn't order that again. The sweet potato fries were good but unremarkable. Given the atmosphere and if you want good hearty comfort type food it's definitely worth a visit. The prices are very reasonable as well. I would stick with the Irish speciality dishes. read more
