I've been coming here on and off for two years and I really love how they offer adult classes! They are hard to come by. Staff is extremely friendly and the owner is super helpful with questions you may have. I've taken ballet, contemporary and urban here. Classes start at $60 but if you bundle up you can save some cash! Highly recommend if you've always wanted to learn how to dance or if you're returning dancer. We love going to Dance 101! This is our second year with our youngest attending this dance studio and she has enjoyed every class she has been in so far. All of the staff are super friendly and caring. They have an exchange program for gently used shoes should your kids feet outgrow their dance ballet, tap, jazz, etc. shoe type. A waiting space in the front with seating for parents, and a small selection of apparel for sale as well at the front of the store near the reception desk. There are three studios, restrooms, and ample private parking in the shopping center. We really enjoyed the end of year dance recital and look forward to the next one in the coming year. Dance 101 is a welcoming environment for all children and adults. I value the experience the instructors bring and their patience with the students. I also appreciate that the recital costumes are adorable but still age appropriate. One of the most welcoming things about this particular studio is that they are open to students of all abilities. I have an 8 year old son who was in Sara's Tap and Jazz class. On 5/15 (Summertime in Phoenix) my son forgot his water bottle and when he asked Sara if he could have a drink she told him "No thank you". So my son went the entire 60 minute class in the summer without water. I spoke with Emily (the owner) and she said she was surprised because Sara gives multiple water breaks throughout the class. To which I responded "So you're telling me she offered everyone a water break and made my son watch the other girls in class get a drink while he stood there thirsty?" Emily did not respond to my question.. instead she informed me that they have water bottles at the front desk if my son ever forgets in the future....To which I responded "so you're telling me there's a water fountain outside the class and there were water bottles a few feet away and she chose to allow my son to workout without water in the summertime?" Again Miss Emily did not acknowledge what I asked and simply said that "that's not the Sara she knows and maybe they all need a reminder about water breaks". I pointed out that Sara's response of "no thank you" to a thirsty child was rude and she seemed to want to hurt him intentionally. I explained that my son is an extreme rule follower so when she told him "no thank you" he never asked again and just suffered through it. Miss Emily did her best to dodge my direct question of why an adult would want to harm a child and instead thanked me for my feedback. I know this is a small business and I questioned if I would write a review but after Sara had multiple chances to apologize to my son and myself I came to the conclusion that I have to warn other parents. I have had other teachers here and my children loved them. When we pay for extra curricular programs we expect that our children will be treated with respect and dignity and the people in authority will not use it to abuse our babies. My son was the only boy in the class. He has high functioning Autism, and he was also the only black/biracial child in this class. Whatever her bias is against him it was unnecessary. If you are going to go to this school I would warn against having Sara as an instructor. read more

The Dance 101 family is exceptional. I recently volunteered as a helper for the recital and attended one of the shows and I can't speak more highly about the thought, consideration, and organization that goes into ensuring that each rehearsal and show are carried out with professionalism, safety, inclusivity, and fun! Issues were addressed promptly. Communication to families, staff and the Mesa Art Center was clear and care was taken to provide information and instruction through multiple forums for ease of access. Miss Emily is planful and does her best to consider individual and family circumstances when creating the rehearsal and recital schedules - which is saying something when you take into account the number of students in the Dance 101 family. I also noticed Miss Emily tirelessly still trying to promptly and personally respond to calls, emails, and complaints, while in the midst of leading 2 8-hour dress rehearsals and 3 nights of recitals. All students had access to staff supervision, water, activities and bathrooms, and were treated with respect from the moment they were checked in by parents until they left the event. Each evening Miss Emily and the staff/volunteers/Mesa Art Center staff discussed highlights from the day, and areas for improvement, then created a troubleshooting plan for the next day. If recital week is run this exceptionally, I can only image that Dance 101 maintains the same high quality of services, classes, and customer care the rest of the year. 3, 2, 1 Dance!!!! read more

My daughter has been attending Dance 101 for 3 years now. She loves it. She attends Acro and Ballet/Tap/Jazz combo class. Dance 101 helps her build confidence and skills. I also personally love that they are not a competition school. There is one recital a year and its a special event. Perfect match! Our daughter has been taking ballet lessons for years, so when we had to stop sending her to classes over a year ago for financial reasons, it was a source of regret for all of us. She really enjoys ballet and dance in general and we wanted to get her back into classes as soon as we could. Several months ago, we were driving by and our sharp-eyed Miss spots Dance 101 through the car window. When the time came that we felt comfortable sending her to ballet again, this was the first place my wife wanted to check out. She liked what she saw from the very start. It was a very new place, but they seemed to have the professionalism and approach that we thought would be right for our daughter. We started her up and she clicked with her teacher right away. The folks here are rigorous and thorough with lessons, but fun and with a laid-back attitude. The clincher came when we went to Barry's Dance Theatre Shop in Scottsdale to get our daughter fitted for new pointe shoes. We told him that we started her up at Dance 101 and his eyes lit up, "Oh you're seeing Emily!" That was all I needed to hear. If Dance 101 has the Barry seal of approval, it's good enough for me. He's been in the biz for years and knows his stuff. If you are thinking about starting your child off in dance, this is the perfect spot. We have been dancing with dance 101 for 5 years now. My oldest says it's "an amazing place to be" and my youngest says "we love the teachers." The instructors are so professional and wonderful with the kids and my girls enjoy dancing so much! The owner wants everyone to enjoy dance, hence the reason Dance 101 is solely recreational and not competitive. After my Adult Urban trial class, this reason alone was enough to make me sign up for weekly classes. A former coworker's daughter attends Dance 101 for ballet and he's also said only good things about the place. My daughter experienced her first class with dance 101 this past spring. The owner Emily is great with all her students. I looked at several places and really like the fact it's takes more time to plan out the classes for my the younger students (3's and 4's etc). For that age I want her to have fun and not worry about competitions etc. my daughter experienced both ms Emily as her teacher and ms alli. Both are awesome. My daughter never wanted to miss class and had so much fun. Before dance 101 my daughter cried at a gymnastics class every time i walked away. After one class at dance 101 she didn't cry one time and after a few months performed at the end of season recital. Love love love dance 101. read more

My daughter has been with Dance 101 for the past 3 years. The owner, Emily, is a wonderful instructor and she runs a well organized program. Every year in the summer, the students have a performance at Tempe High. It is amazing to me how she choreographs and teaches 20+ different routines for 200+ kids of various ages, all the while ensuring the kids are having fun and the parents are satisfied with their child's progress. I absolutely love the studio! I signed my daughter (who definitely has some special medical issues and hasn't been in a class setting EVER) up for a class this past year. She was extremely nervous, had separation anxiety and was a little overwhelmed with all of the new people. Miss Emily, Miss Christine, and Miss Ashley made a point to help her feel so welcomed. They let her come around at her own pace and she ended up LOVING it! She learned so much more than I would have ever expected at her age and would practice at home. The night of the big performance she nailed it and has never been more proud of herself. I'm so thankful that she got this experience and we will be returning this year in two classes!
