I have been going to DG a long time. Coffee and food have always been good. So why only three stars? Because they are slow as Christmas. How a coffee house can turn a four person line into a 15 minute wait and a resulting 10 person line is beyond me. Dancing Goats coffee bar has great coffee. If you have your cup to stay you get 1 free refill. Hey man, I'm sold on that alone. My server/cashier was very friendly. The other guy there was hard at work at the espresso machine. The place is nice and clean with a modern look and feel to it. I like the dark woods and deep greens. They have some cute t-shirts for sale, which I was tempted to buy. The only thing is I felt it was a bit yuppy-ish in atmosphere. haha. Maybe because I like man-watching at coffee shops. I heard sbux in buckhead is best for that. Anyways...I'm always about supporting independent shops with great coffee and that's what this place is. So go over there and chill for bit and get your free refill! You can't deny the good taste. You'll fit right in with your macbook and baby gapped children. Oh yeah, they have the clover method machine...which is a rare commodity. I've tried clover method coffee in Pennsylvania, very good. If you're curious about it, definitely try it at Dancing Goats. Very sleek and open. Comfortable and quiet though feels a bit corporate. The logos for the roasters were at least as prominent as the logos for the actual cafe. The location gives it lots of sun and lots of breeze. Perfect for the day we were there but I can see it being sometimes a disadvantage. Had a small Green Tea Chai. Roughly $3.50. A bit steep for what it was. Tasty but a bit disappointed that the service automatically assumed I wanted whole milk. My digestive system gives it thumbs down but overall pleasant. read more

First visit, cashier tried to give me the wrong amount of change. Mental thanks to my calculus teacher, I can calculate totals even without the receipt (which was not offered). This is the perfect spot for a bit of tea or coffee all free from the pesticides and the usual dreck that they poison us with. The place is calm and peaceful, to spend with a friend, or a quiet place to spend in a book, or down time from the business worries of the world. SUMMARY= Very good drinks, great for pickup or working, Wi-Fi, outlets, plenty of seating and parking... this is a Decatur winner (except for the scones and sometimes the service). DRINKS= Lattes are consistently very good. The mixed icy things (I think they are called Chilly Goats) are also quite tasty. I particularly like how they are not overly sweet; you can really taste that coffee/espresso. FOOD= Unfortunately all the scones have been disappointments, which is my main reason for deducting one star. I've tried one with walnuts, something with chocolate and orange, a chocolate chip one, I think one with apricot maybe...? Basically I have given more than three strikes and every time they are underwhelming. They are a little too heavy and don't have enough of the "special ingredient", so they are mostly just bready. ATMOSPHERE= This place always seems crowded, but somehow I can usually find a seat if I want it. Camping out with your laptop and working is also possible and allowed. There's some large round tables in the back, bar window seating, and comfy chairs in the front. There are also outlets and free, working Wi-Fi. There's a large parking lot in the back and along the side of the store, but you may have to wait a bit for a spot to free up because this place is popular. SERVICE= Usually the people at the register are really friendly and the baristas are grumpy. Not sure why. (Exception: this one barista who used to study music education was ridiculously nice, but I haven't seen him there lately.) Sometimes the staff works slowly and there's a longish wait. The service is the other reason for four rather than five stars. SUGGESTION= This store has a ridiculous amount of floor space, but a lot of it is devoted to retail. The little table in the middle of the room with coffee and cups on it needs to be moved to wall shelves. You could put way more seats in there and make everyone happy. read more

Great spot to work remotely. Lots of shared space and easy access to WiFi. Iced chai is ammmmazing and so is the yummy sugar donut. Oh hell yes! Gets crowded and parking can be rough after 11 am during the week. May have to do paid street parking but the yummy treats and bright open work space is worth it. Bottom line - they make the best coffee of any coffee place I have been (in Atlanta). Be sure to try the Clover-method coffee - it is well worth the wait and the extra cost. They have a few odds and ends to eat - the bagels are great. The building used to house an AM radio station - but that shut down in the 20th century. I love coffee, and for that, they get 4 stars. I despise poor, slow (and sometimes rude or clueless) service---which is why they didn't get 5 stars. I live right down the street, so it is the closest option for me. However, EVERY single time I go in---day or night---there is one person working a register and over 10 plus people in line. Time Wednesday, 3:00pm. Place was busy (may have been due to the holiday week) and while there's plenty of seating, it was sparsely available (would guess it's like that on the weekends also). Parking Lot behind the building. Wasn't difficult to find a space and there's plenty of street parking if there's none in the lot. Atmosphere Good mix of young and old folks. Servers are friendly and quick to make drinks. Food They serve Batdorf & Bronson coffee. We had an Americano and a latte - good, though I think it's difficult to mess up. Summary Quick and friendly service. Coffee is consistent and priced similarly to other coffee houses. Comfortable place to sit for a few hours, if you can find a seat. // 3 :: Good. I love the atmosphere and the furniture and basically how the entire coffee shop looks! I'm also a huge fan of their coffee. Their lattes and cappuccinos are so smooth, and their milk froth is just yum! They also have quite the selection of pastries and scones and such. Looks amazing, will try them on my next visit. I swung by Dancing Goats this afternoon after looking for a new ride at Twist N' Scoot, and I must say that this place is awesome. The first thing I noticed walking into Dancing Goats is that you immediately feel welcome. There were plenty of people sitting around in comfy seating areas, and the space itself was well lit and clean. I walked up to the counter and was greeted by a very friendly woman, who suggested the house blend since it was my first time there. On top of that suggestion I ordered two mini donuts and went on my way. Long story short everything was fantastic, the Dancing Goats blend was strong with a nutty aftertaste which paired nicely with the little donuts I got. The donuts themselves were the perfect combination of sweet and airy that just made me want to turn my car around and buy 10,000 more. I will certainly be back soon, to give try more of their beverages, and hopefully give them the extra star. read more

First, the one minus: The atmosphere in this place can be a bit sterile, and the outdoor seating isn't really too extensive or too exciting. Usually when I stop here I'm looking just to sit around and enjoy a cup of coffee for an hour, and the non-coffee aspects of this place aren't the best. That being said, the coffee more than makes up for it. When I first saw the clover system I told myself I'd work my way through the various coffees available in it. In practice the Sumatra was so good I gave up the "go for variety" system by my second cup. With coffee this good, I'll put up with an uncomfortable seat or two. read more

Great coffee, sharp and friendly staff, nice atmosphere all keep me coming back. I love the notebook with info on all their coffees, including profiles of the growers. DG offers several varieties of Fair Trade, shade-grown beans, as well as supplies for brewing and consuming coffee at home. The baristas are great at making various tasty drinks, and there are a smattering of tea options plus seasonal treats. The care and concern that Batdorf & Bronson puts into their product are rare indeed, and Dancing Goats has hired the best and brightest to work at this location. Add the nice baked treats from Duck's Cosmic Kitchen and a few other edibles, and you've got the ingredients for a very pleasant experience. Not only that, but they're cool about you hanging around to work or visit, as long as you buy something now and then. Why only 3 stars then? The nightmare parking situation! I don't know when all these people came who say "Parking was plentiful" etc. I live in the area, and I can tell you, parking is a problem almost every time I go there (usually weekdays), mainly because of the crowds swarming the yoga studio next door. And there's often somebody who entered via the parking lot "exit" (which is not intuitive or well marked, so not entirely their fault) -- so you end up playing chicken with either a heavily caffeinated driver or a late-for-class, unblissed-out yogi. My advice: Find out when there are no yoga classes and time your visit accordingly. Or walk, ride a bike, or take the #2 MARTA bus. If you must bring a car, chances are you'll end up parking across the street at the Marlay if they're closed, or in the auxiliary post office lot. read more

I came here for the first time today. It's crowded and apparently popular, but the environment feels a bit more like a chain coffee shop than a local shop -- not intimate or cozy. My cappuccino was perfectly fine (although the bar was working a bit slow), but my savory scone was pretty gross, perhaps stale? My mom also did not enjoy her sweet scone. One free refill on to-stay drip coffee is nice. Lots and lots of people working on laptops, some bringing piles of books for research. Classy, open, downtown Decatur. The coffee is addicting (and its not just the caffeine) and the baristas are always friendly. Reasonable prices, competitive to the Starbucks down the road but a better place to be "scene". Only a few tables outside so you may have to fight for your prime location on a sunny day. Large community tables where dozens of yuppies can be seen going at it on their macbooks and taking full advantage of the free wifi. Large parking lot in the back makes it a convienent place to stop, run in, and be out quickly. I find myself going out of the way for this place. Not bad at all! Like a previous reviewer, I gave 'em the cappuccino test. But first, the store itself... It is indeed very Starbucksian in appearance, but that's OK, I don't need a lot of art or "texture" to enjoy a good cappuccino. It is a bit sterile, but really enjoyed a stool by a nice sunny window. The employees all seem happy and friendly, which is a sign of good management. I heard the person taking orders help the customers in front of me decide what to get, happily explaining menu items. My order was taken cheerfully and quickly, and my t-shirt was complimented. Nothing wrong with that. The cappuccino: I'll give it a solid B+, overall. The flavor was best as soon as it was handed to me, with a good nutty / toasty body. The milk foam had good structure and sweet flavor, and I got a nice manually poured flower-ish design. As the coffee cooled, the flavor fell a bit flat. It never got bitter or anything of that nature, just less complex and more, well, Starbucks. On the whole, it was quite enjoyable. As a point of comparison, I gave Octane (a few miles away) an A. Maybe it's a matter of Counter Culture beans vs. Batdorf & Bronson, or maybe at Dancing Goats the baristas are a bit less obsessive. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dancing Goats, especially if you're across the street at Farm Burger. :-) read more

I've been here numerous times and have enjoyed each of them, but today, I may have had the best cup of coffee of my life. The employees are always nice and personable. They never disappoint in the quirky coffee shop employee genre. The layout is fairly open, so I don't feel like I'm sitting in the middle of someone else's conversation. The baristas take their time to make drinks correctly, and it is evident in the taste. Today I had a latte that was the perfect mix of espresso, and frothed milk. The espresso had the natural sweetness that comes through when properly prepared. The milk had the first hint of caramel flavor that comes through as the lactose heats. Before I jump into the snobby end of this review, let me get the pedantic details out of the way: I like this place, a lot. It has a vibrant atmosphere, while still being conducive to doing work (very important for people like me that do all their work in coffee shops.) The staff is friendly and knowledgable, more on that later. The customer base is a perfect combination of socializing and being productive. The coffee is great, but that's due to several factors, which we'll delve into momentarily. My only gripe, similar to Katherine M.'s is that they are getting awfully close to the commercialism of a Starbucks with the extent of retail items they have. However, those retail items are very high quality coffee products (as opposed to stuffed animals and vanilla syrup), which redeems DG slightly. Ok, on to the snobbery, if you care to read it! Here's my take on coffee: it's just coffee, it's not world peace, so don't hinge your life on being the best, but it's really cool to do things right. As a former barista, I know a fair amount about coffee, and I hold coffee shops to a pretty high standard. (Because it's fun to have such standards, not because I think perfect coffee is the be all end all of the universe). A Batdorf & Bronson coffee shop pretty much tops the charts on coffee snobbery, so let's see how they stack up: My first major test is the cappuccino test. A true-to-Italy cappuccino is an 8-10 oz drink, espresso with steamed milk. All the shenanigans about foam vs. no foam is crap. The proportion of espresso to milk is roughly equal, slightly more milk than coffee. That's the point of a cappuccino - the espresso taste isn't buried under a bunch of milk, but it's toned down enough for those of us who don't like straight espresso. Thus, in my book, a truly great coffee shop will only serve one size of cappuccino. Anything larger becomes a latte. So - Dancing Goats passes the first test on that. Test #2 - Automatic, semi-automatic or fully manual? Espresso machines typically come in three varieties, which in turn make baristas come in three varieties. An automatic machine delivers an predetermined amount of espresso-grind coffee, runs a predetermined amount of water through it, and produces identical shots at the press of a button. Example: Starbucks. Semi-automatic machines require the barista to pack the espresso properly, which takes some attention, depending on humidity and air temperature of wherever one is making the espresso. The machine runs a predetermined amount of water through the espresso, although the barista can cut it off preemptively. A fully manual machine means that the barista packs the espresso, then turns on the water and watches as the shot comes out for the exact moment to cut off the water. It takes a fair amount of skill to make consistant shots this way, because every shot is a little different, might take more or less water, might need to be packed tighter, etc. DG has a fully manual machine, so A+ on this test. Test #3 - flexibility. Once it's clear that these guys know what their doing, I like to test how serious they are about doing things "their way." I've noticed that a certain west-side coffee shop is pretty hardcore about not varying from their norms, which is sort of obnoxious. That's cool, but I like to see that baristas can just roll with things and give people the coffee that they want. (If someone wants a 4-shot large cappuccino, just give it to 'em, right?) After getting my plain old cappuccino, I asked for one with brown sugar put in the bottom of the cup, so it melts when the espresso is poured over it. So yummy. Now a hardcore coffee snob would not be excited about doing this, but it seems like a pretty standard operation at DG. I approve. Test #4 - barista knowledge. Now I haven't really "talked shop" with the folks at DG, but I did overhear one of the baristas asking a fellow barista to explain the Chemex filters to a customer who was buying some (which they sell, along with the Chemex pots.) If you really want to be the top of coffee snobbery, your baristas really need to know the ins and outs of such a crucial piece of the coffee snob arsenal. So I think they need to do a little more training on the plain coffee and retail side, but it seems like their espresso knowledge is generally top notch. Overall, DG does fulfills the role of a coffee snob's wet dream, without the full pretentiousness that I was sort of expecting. I could tell there are plenty of customers that just want their nonfat vanilla latte to go and don't give a crap about the 'science' of espresso or any of that. But for those that want to come in learn, or show off their own knowledge, the crew at DG can definitely handle that with out sounding like a bunch of smug creeps. Bravo, Dancing Goat, bravo. Love the coffee but will not go back to this location again. So full of Emory study groups and others nursing that one cup of coffee while they work on their laptops tables never turn over. I know theres always some of this at any coffee shop but its extreme here. They desperately need more seating or even some lean counters. Maybe cut back on all the retail space like against the walls. Maybe they could politely ask people to limit stays to 1 or 2 hours. read more

I was recently served one of the best cappuccinos that I've ever had at Dancing Goats. That was followed up the next day by one of the best macchiatos I've ever had. It was so smooth and creamy that I accidentally drank it all in one fell swig. Add a strawberry lavender scone (or for that matter, any pastry from Duck's Cosmic Kitchen) and you have an unbeatable combination that deserves one serious Hallelujah-Amen-Holy-what have you. The baristas are exceptionally well trained. As with any coffee shop, some are better than others but even they are above-average when compared to other Atlanta coffee shops. Other things to love about this coffee shop are the bright open airy space and the customers, some of the friendliest people I'd ever had the pleasure of standing in line with. I don't write bad reviews unless I am actually annoyed by a place, not just for a weird or less than perfect experience. This incident just caught me on the wrong day. (Also- I LOVE the ponce/old fourth ward location and have never had any issues over there). I asked pleasantly if they could ice one of the herbal tea bags for me. Places generally do this, but I know it's kind of a pain, that's why I ASKED FIRST. The lady says yes, tells me to pick my tea (displayed near the register) and goes to finish the drink she is making. As I wait for her to finish another lady comes up and says "We have an iced green tea already made, if you'd like that. It's really good." Nice and pleasant. I ask if it's caffeinated, because I really can't handle caffeine past around 11 am and it's after 3. She says yes, slightly caffeinated. I hesitate, clearly uncomfortable, I hate putting extra stress on service industry workers (being one myself) and am trying to decide if I should just do a decaf coffee. But it's 90 degrees out today and if possible I'd like something cold. I ask very sheepishly if it would be alright to still get the herbal tea bag iced. "..... Um, yeah, that's fine." She's visibly irritated and has become borderline rude. I know this tactic because I have used it myself as a server, so maybe this is karma coming back to haunt me. It's used to let the customer know that they are inconveniencing you, to try and make them feel bad. I tell her it's alright, I will just go with the green tea, and hurry to put back the tea bags. She gives me some explanation about how it makes inventory more difficult and takes longer to steep (which of course it does), but that she'd be happy to do the caffeine free if that's what I want. Yes, I am sure you're HAPPY to... that's why you turned on the snootiness. If it's putting you out, making things difficult for the employees, holding up the line (there was none), just SAY NO. I would not be offended to be told that they only have one type of iced tea. For God's sake. I just can't abide passive aggressiveness. Not over a stupid cup of iced tea. Like I said, a pretty minor incident, and maybe she's just been icing too many tea bags today and can't handle another one, I don't know. This just really really rubbed me the wrong way. We had brunch at The Grange and they served us delicious rich cups of coffee... to find out we could purchase it across the street at Dancing Goats. Imagine the excitement as we found ourselves there 5 minutes later. The staff at Dancing Goats was very helpful and it was such a fun experience to choose our beans (nice selection to choose from) and grind them. I do not know if I would plop myself down here to work/study but will definitely be coming back to pick up more coffee! read more

I am so sad that I just found this place! I've been a fan of Dancing Goats coffee for a while now, and to think I can get somebody to make me a cup of DG using some fancy-pants Clover apparatus is almost too much for my tiny heart. The prices are pretty reasonable (cheaper than S'bucks), and they have a fair selection of delectables that are made by Duck's Cosmic Kitchen. The space is really large, and I like the decorations-- they make you feel hip and simultaneously relaxed. Only down side: there was a boat-load of noisy kids there. But, I guess they need to get their coffee somewhere too... read more

I discovered this place about two years ago and at first I absolutely loved this place. The coffee was great, the staff was friendly, and it was a great place to come and spend some time reading or in my case doing homework. The atmosphere used to be what I like to call "neo-hippie" which I loved and it fits perfectly with the downtown decatur area. I don't know if they have put out a new marketing campaign or something but now the place is overflowing (quite literally) with unemployed middle aged people who come, bring their own food and drink, and plant themselves in the best seats for 6 or 7 hours. You should come as soon as the doors open if you expect to find a spot on the couches because once they're taken, the people never leave so you might as well migrate to the nearest Starbucks or Java Monkey. I used to come to this place 4 or 5 times a week and spend way too much money here. Now I only come maybe once a month because I know I will not likely be able to find a parking spot or a place to sit. I am glad that their business is doing well but I really would like my "well kept secret" old coffee hut back :( read more

It's got good coffee, and customer service is hit-or-miss. Sometimes you get really kind baristas and others you get rude ones. My only hangups are with the parking situation (which is almost nonexistent compared to the amount of space in the building). As well, it's not the place you want to go to to get some work done. There are always tons of kids every time I've been there and people who go there don't seem to understand personal space. It is great for hanging out with friends, though. And has a great outdoor seating area. So I'd recommend it if you're a biker and just want to have coffee with friends. read more

Not sure if there's anything negative to write about here! The Lady and I started our Saturday activities at Dancing Goats and they really set us up for the day. The inside is super spacious and inviting - if you look up you can see that they've double diffused all of their lights, which means that they've put a lot of thought into the way they want people to feel when they walk in. I ordered a cafe au lait (because I can't drink black coffee on it's own... dang heartburn) and The Lady, true to form, ordered a specialty drink called the Roebuck which had lavender and some other light flavors. There's a great variety of seating options and a ton of natural light on all sides, so we found some black chairs next to a table to pop a squat in. Order was ready in less than 2 minutes, fantastic. And the coffee was wonderful! The medium size that I ordered was a LOT of coffee for a great price, and although The Lady's coffee was small, (**constructive criticism, list the sizes of the specialty coffee drinks!**) the flavor was wonderful. We had a casual experience here but wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dancing Goats to anybody staying in the area. read more
