Dr. Chin has been my OD for at least 15 years and he's always done a great job. My complaint is with his staff. After 5 weeks I called about if I could pick up my glasses. The staff member at that time said the frames are on back order. To me this was unacceptable. I feel I should have been notified by them ahead of me having to call, and after she told me she said not to call that she would call me. On 12-9-2025 my glasses were ordered and got them today 1-22-2026. I think I will go elsewhere for my glasses in the future. Not happy with the service... read more

I recently had an appointment with Dr. Daniel Chin, O.D., and I was thoroughly impressed by his professionalism and thoroughness. I had came in originally because I lost my last pair of contact lenses and upon peeing my eyes And During the eye exam, he discovered an abrasion on my cornea, and he took the time to carefully explain the issue and the next steps. His calm and patient approach made me feel at ease throughout the process. Dr. Chin went above and beyond to ensure I understood the situation, offering clear instructions for recovery and long-term eye care. I highly recommend him for his exceptional care and attention to detail. Also, the office staff is great as I was running late was able to call them and they were able to accommodate me as well as the doctor stayed late for me as well. I stopped by a couple months ago. Accidentally stepped on my glasses and broke my frames. Both lens were not damaged. I didn't have a spare and I haven't done an eye exam in like 5 years. Made an appointment to see Dr. Chin for the first time and he was great. Very knowledgeable, efficient and quick. I thought his eye exam was more thorough compared to the last place I went to. Jade at the front desk was amazing. She was able to remove the lens on my old glasses and put them on some throwaway frames. The lens didn't really fit these frames and the frames weren't my style I would have chosen but given the situation I was in I was happy with this temporary solution until my new glasses came in. There were some frames Jade helped me pick out online but it took a month for them to arrive. I came back and selected the frame I wanted but it took another month for my glasses to arrive. I didn't have any issues with waiting. They don't make their glasses in house. Overall it was a very positive experience for me and I will definitely come back next time for an eye exam and glasses. read more

I have been going to Dr. Chin's office for routine eye exams for the past few years. (I usually purchase my frames elsewhere though, so I can't speak on that experience.) As far as exams go, Dr. Chin is efficient, caring and friendly! If you're looking for an optometrist who puts patient care at the forefront, look no further. Admittedly, I get pretty bad anxiety when it comes to appointments. Without skipping a beat, Dr. Chin always walks me through what I can expect throughout the appointment and sprinkles a little small talk as the exam goes along. It shows a lot of care for his patients, and a huge reason as to why I've only chosen to go to his office for my exams. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They've always answered my questions thoroughly. No issues there either. He was very thorough in explaining every step to her and guiding her through putting the contacts on and taking them off. Dr. Chin is simply an amazing human being. He is very mindful of your needs. This was the most thorough eye exam I have ever had. I went with my mother and she enjoyed seeing Dr. Chin as well. My mother doesn't speak English well but Dr. Chin was kind and patient. We ended up using numbers to test her eye vision. This place welcomes all socioeconomic backgrounds. They accept multiple forms of insurances including MediCal. Parking wasn't too bad. You can park in the parking garage and its 75 cents an hour. There's street parking as well. They sanitize the glasses and even wipes down everything after each use. I would highly recommend this place! read more

I rarely wear glasses and decided I wanted to give contacts a try. I was able to try it on there and also test it out for about a week. Another year has passed and I recently made my second visit to Dr. Chin for my annual examination. This time I took advantage of his extended hours on Thursdays and came after work for a 6pm appointment. It was great seeing the friendly ladies in the front office, Michelle and Shirley. Michelle and Shirley tested my peripheral vision and my eyes for glaucoma before Dr. Chin performed the various tests on my vision. Dr. Chin is the BEST! I had been thinking about getting contacts for awhile and was waiting until I got insurance to do so. My insurance finally processed and a friend recommended Dr. Chin. This was by FAR the best eye appointment I've ever had! Dr. Chin was so patient and friendly. I was worried because some optometrist at Lenscrafters had told me that I have cataracts, MIGHT have eye cancer and would probably go blind in a few years. Dr. Chin assured me that my eyes were fine and I most definitely did not have cancer or cataracts, and found contacts for me right then and there! He walked me through how to put my contacts on, how to take them off and how to take care of them. It was a lot of information all at once (and on a Saturday morning, no less) but he explained it so well that I understood everything right away. I walked out of his office with my new contacts and with only a $10 copay. Dr. Chin is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. Again, I had literally hundreds of eye appointments over the years, and this is the first one where I haven't wanted to cry, scream or hit the optometrist =) read more

The 1 star is for Jade (front office worker). She is professional, friendly and responsive. Unfortunately, I can not say the same for Dr. Chin or his other office staff, Sarah. Back in March, Dr. Chin gave me back my eye glasses with a large noticeable scratch in the field of vision of the new bi-focal lenses that Dr. Chin himself fitted for the frame. I had paid an extra $140 to have anti-glare and anti-scratch coding applied. Dr. Chin made no mention of the scratch, however, I noticed it before I left the office. I immediately told a surprised Jade who immediately apologized and offered to order me a new replacement lens. Then the Covid-19 quarantined happened and I patiently waited almost 5 months for their phone call telling me that the new lens had arrived. No call so I called them on 8/11 and spoke to Sarah (Jade was out sick) who was combative and continually interrupted me. I asked Sarah to not order me another lens after she could not find the order as I would wait 2 days to speak to Jade knowing that she may have put them somewhere unbeknownst to Sarah. Sarah ignored my request saying she would order another lens until I asked her again to please not do so until I speak to Jade. She said ok. 2 days later I went into the office and Jade apologized for everything. She stated that the replacement lens had not been originally ordered back in March and she did not know why. I told her that this was ok knowing Covid-19 had already started spreading. Jade then told me that Sarah had already placed the order after I spoke to her on the phone 2 days ago even though I requested her not to. I then asked to speak to Dr. Chin realizing that he needs to know about Sarah. Dr. Chin was very unprofessional and short with me, not letting me finish telling him my concerns. Bottom line: Dr. Chin can not be trusted. He should have never given me scratched lens in the first place, especially when I paid extra out of pocket for anti-scratch coding. He also should not have unprofessional staff like Sarah. And if a mistake is made (we all make mistakes for time to time), a professional and responsible doctor will apologize, however, Dr. Chin did not. read more

Our whole family has been going to Dr. Chin for years. He is always on time, pleasant and has the nicest staff working for him. He was the only Doc after years of getting contacts that irritated my eyes, was able to get me the correct size contacts that are comfortable and I don't feel them. I would highly recommend him as an eye doctor! Plus they have a nice selection of Ray-Ban glasses and sunglasses that I swear by. read more

Disappointed with the outcome of my glasses (my own frame). I had them put lenses on my frame. This feedback/review is not an attack in anyway to Dr. Chin and his staff. I am only speaking/sharing from my own experience. It's my first time there and the last. They seems to be good people but I highly suggest to change their ways of doing business specifically with the Medi-Cal insurance customers. They don't take responsibility on what was done wrong and instead put the responsibility on the LAB they work with. As a customer, I don't deal with the LAB they work with. What I do know is I am doing business with Dr. Chin's office. I believe this is an oversight on his part. I had an eye exam in his office and brought my eyeglasses frame for them to install new lenses with the new prescription. After about 3 weeks, I received my eyeglasses back and noticed one of the ear piece is loose and the screw holding the ear piece is broken that you can no longer tighten it. I brought it back to his office and he checked it out. He told me he cannot do anything about it but it can be fixed for a fee (my own pocket). He said the LAB they sent it to most likely broke the screw. It is obvious the screw is broken. No other help was offered. Washed his hands!! Not even an apology to what has happened to my frame. It should not matter what insurance you have, government insurance or private, customer treatment stays the same! He still got paid! If you have government insurance, I highly DO NOT recommend Dr. Chin's service. Right is right, wrong is wrong... You go figure! read more

Doctor Chin has a temper of a of disobedient kid. Here is the story , my mother who does not speak English and I went in for her eye exam. During the exam , he was making frustrated faces and his tones of voice was to let us know he was annoyed that my mother didn't understand. What is the meaning of being a doctor ? What a cool Doctor. He makes you feel very comfortable, and he is extremely professional. I couldn't decide if I wanted to go with contact lenses or frames, and he had great advice, "you don't wear the glasses you have, so go for the contacts." He was right, I'm way to vain for frames! The office is modern, with new equipment, and the selection of frames (If you want glasses) is wide. My only issue is that the available time for his first and last appointments aren't that great if you want to go to work the same day (9-5pm). For my appointments I had to go to work late for one, and leave work early for the other. Other than that, I had no complaints. I believe he takes walk-ins as well. read more

He seemed very nice in the beginning of her exam, but seemed to lose his patience when she started struggling reading the letters. Should have read the reviews on this doctor before taking her here. Dr. Chin is great! I came here for the first time last week and it was easy to get an appointment, he saw me on time, the exam was quick and painless, and he didn't pressure me to buy anything. As a bonus, I forgot what brand of contacts I was already using so I took a guess. When I got home I realized I was wrong and couldn't re-order those lenses with the prescription he gave me, so I called him up and he adjusted the rx to the correct brand and emailed me the updated info so I could place an order online that day. The perfect eye exam in under 1 hr. Today was my first appointment with Dr. Chin and even though I left fuzzy eyed with hugely dialated pupils, I couldn't have been more satisfied with my experience. The whole processed flowed like a well rehearsed dance routine. I walked in and was greeted by name and not "Are you the 12 o'clock?" - filled out the one page patient registraction - paid my copay - then was walked in for the first of many of tests. Before each test Dr. Chin explained what was going to happen and why. If I had any questions Dr. Chin would take the time to provide intelligent answers. When it was time to take a closer look at my retina, Dr. Chin put in the drops to dialate my eyes (dialation takes about 15mins) and brought me back to the front to check out some frames. I didn't find any that I liked, but that was okay he just wrote me my precription so I could go elsewhere. I love the no-pressure attitude! Once my eyes were ready he brought me back the exam room, put on his fancy head gear, and wrapped up my appointment. Dr. Chin is a pretty cool guy, at no point did I feel like my time was wasted. I highly recommend him, especially if you have VSP coverage. read more

With or without the comparison to my previous optometrist review, my visit to Dr. Chin's office was a very pleasant one. The office is very welcoming and neat; the receptionist was very hospitable. Dr. Chin was also very nice and easy going. Whatever questions I had, he answered in a very polite manner. He also had a very good bed side manner, so i didn't feel like whatever questions or concerns I had would be too stupid. My only gripes are since his office is on Park St., it can be hard to find parking in the area during the afternoon, and also that the glasses they have seem to be a bit on the expensive side though they are very stylish. At the time though, my vision coverage didn't have me eligible for credit on new frames for another year so that part can be overlooked lol. read more

Dr. Chin is the best optometrist I have ever had. He provides a more complete eye examination than the ophthalmologists I've seen in the past. I wear contact lenses and during my first visit, he identified the cause of a problem I'd had for years. I'd been prescribed the incorrect size lens years earlier and the lenses never felt perfect. Once Dr. Chin changed the size, I've had a much more comfortable lens wearing experience. Lastly, Dr. Cin and his wife and integral parts of the Alameda community and deserve to be supported! I have been going to Dr. Chin for over 10 years and have always found him to be kind and patient. His office sends me reminders to get I eyes examined which is very helpful as I am very busy and don't remember to do keep track of things like this. He has fixed my broken glasses on a few occasion with out an appointment just me doing a walking with the slightest bit of hesitation. I once had him special order a part for a pair of glasses I had sat on. When the part came in we realized it was useless to try to fix the eyewear. I though I had just wasted $90.00 but he gave me store credit for the full amount. Something I was not expecting or asked for. YES! I most definitely recommend Dr. Chin. read more

I really like getting my eyes checked and prescription updated at this office. Dr. Chin is always ready to see me within 2 minutes of my arrival and the front staff are friendly and efficient. This isn't the place to come if you are used to being engaged in conversation and banter while at your medical appointments. The staff and the doctor are cordial but they are people of few words and I am incredibly comfortable with that. Unless my insurance changes or I move out of state, I expect to continue coming here for as long as the office remains open. That being said, I've read some negative reviews about Dr. Chin's frustration with and sly comments toward children. I can tell you that I do remember a couple of times when I was much younger where he made me feel like he was irritated and annoyed with me. Although, I was a little uncomfortable at the time, as a person who has suffered from extreme anxiety their whole life, these few appointments have not deterred me from returning to see Dr. Chin. This is not to excuse his behavior, everyone should always be kind to children, but to suggest that if your child absolutely has to come here to get their eyes checked out, it might be a good idea to attend the appointment with them as moral support should Dr. Chin's attitude begin to get a little short. read more

Friday afternoon my kid came home from school telling me that another kid accidentally ran into him and bent his glasses. Then we notice that one of his silicone nose pad covers is missing and the other one is torn. We don't have any spare nose pad covers sitting around at home, so Friday night I research places in and near Alameda that might have the covers. Saturday morning as soon as I think the places might be open I give them a call. Dr. Chin's office answers right away and tell me that they have the part and will be open until 2. So as soon as I can make it over there, I do, with son and glasses in tow. Jade is at the front desk and remembers my call and takes the glasses into the back room and pops back out a few minutes later with new nose pad covers installed. Son tries the glasses on and smiles (behind his mask). I tried to pay Jade but she wouldn't accept anything for their service or the parts. Amazing customer service and first rate care. read more

Dr. Daniel Chin is one of the RUDEST optometrists I have ever had the pleasure or displeasure of experiencing. He has a horrific temper with children and does not conduct himself well when it comes to young children and teenagers, especially girls. My 14 year old daughter went in to his office with my mother and myself. I stayed behind to fill out paperwork and stay with my mother who does not speak english. I trusted Dr. Chin enough to conduct himself properly with my daughter, but I was soon sadly mistaken. My daughter comes out of her appointment to hear that her eye sight is fine. She then shyly tells me that Dr. Chin was very rude to her. I asked her for specifics. She tells me he told her that "she was wasting his time and that his time would be served more valuable for other customers" and that "she was lying" when she said she could not see the lines along the bottom. He also told her that this appointment "messed up his day" and that half the time she urged her to just "guess" the lines. I then immediately called the office back and asked Dr. Chin for his side. He tells me that he talked to my daughter calmly and that he noticed she was "lying" as most teenage girls do. I then told him that his comment was BEYOND sexist, which he responded with by saying that teenage girls acting disorderly was a "documented fact." Eugenics was once a documented fact for discrediting the education of black folk, so I do not take his knowledge as anything other than sexist and quite frankly rude. I urge you to not give this man any more business, especially with the eye sight of your teenage girls. My daughter's appointment was July 25th of 2015. read more
