This place is really hard to work with, and I think it's mainly due to one woman who works there and isn't nice. But in general, I wouldn't recommend this place. We have used this place twice. The good thing about this place is they have a good selection of children's frames, which most places don't have. Also, they did a good job making the glasses (or their lab did). They also take the Covered California medical insurance for children's exam and glasses, and most places don't. These are the reasons for 2 stars instead of 1 star. The bad things: The eye exam appointments need to be booked 3 months in advance or more. It is very hard to get an exam slot. I've been to many places and it has never been this hard. Even at an ophthalmologist, where they are also doing surgeries and such, it is easier to get an appointment for an eye exam. You need an appointment to look at glasses, and it also takes a while to get an appointment. At other places, you can often get a same day appointment, or at least within the next day or two. But at Eyewise, you have to wait 2-3 weeks. Even the second time we came, as repeat customers, we had an urgent issue (broken glasses) and had to wait a long time for an appointment. We finally got an appointment, and then the woman who works here didn't even help us. Why do you need an appointment if they are just going to ignore you the whole time anyway? She never even got up from her desk. We had to go over to her and ask specific questions. When we were ready to order the glasses and went to tell her, she finally came over but didn't explain options or say anything or make eye contact or act nice at all. I felt like we were really putting her out or something. The only reason we got glasses here was because of the good selection of children's frames. The other time we went here it was because we had only a couple places we could use insurance, and the same woman was there, and very unfriendly. The whole time, I felt like I'd done something wrong just by being there. It was not a welcoming experience. That time it was for both exam and glasses. The exam was fine. The glasses are fine. But the experience is bad. I don't need much help, but being completely ignored even when I first arrive feels bad. If it had happened only once, I'd think maybe she was just having a bad day, but nope, not 4 times total. When the glasses were ready, they called to let us know and schedule a time for us to pick them up. I said I could come now or anytime the next day, and they said their first available time was a week later. A week later! Just to get the glasses? So we took the first available appt, and when we went, they just handed us the glasses and asked are they fine, and we were gone. I don't know why you need an appt for that and why we couldn't have just gotten them earlier. Also, every time we've been here, it's never been busy, we're usually the only ones there and it's a very quiet place. This place moved from the Nob Hill shopping area to near Marina Village, in an office building. You ring a doorbell to get buzzed into the building. I've been to many optometry shops in my life, and the experience here pales in comparison with all the others. read more

My spouse and I had been with Eyewise for many years. Whether it was Dr Luken or DR Fong, it had been fine with us. We haven't been there for at least a couple years because every time I called, there's no upcoming availability. When I finally got an appointment for both of us, I subsequently called to adjust the appointment times. Approaching appointment date, i received a voice recording for appointment reminder, the appointment was not adjusted. Called the office to have it fixed. Subsequently I received another voice recording with the correct appointment time. On the day of appointment, I drove to the old location without knowing they moved. Then I called the office to tell them I may run a few minutes late because I didn't know they moved. The office looked up my name and told me I have no appointment. I guess this has to be my last interaction with this office. Not pointing at any particular reason other than this office not having a way for customer to see appointment visually via text or email, along with the office address. Recently stopped by Eyewise after Pilates class. Luckily I did bc my old optometry clinic doesn't take my new insurance. Thankfully after speaking with the Marco at the front desk, he assured that Eyewise takes my new insurance and scheduled me for the next available appointment. The clinic has a wide selection of glasses, frames, sunglasses, accessories, etc. the clinic staff are very friendly and welcoming. Marco helped with my frame selections and ensuring that my insurance covers my prescriptions. He also explained a lot of optometrist terms really well to someone who is unfamiliar with optometry. Dr. Lukens is such an awesome Optometry Doctor. He's always very thorough in his check and he takes time to explain so you understand or could follow up with a question. Due to my visual challenges and wanting to have both glasses and contact lens, it took quite a while to figure out both. But throughout the process Dr. Lukens and the staff at Eyewise was really patient with me to make sure my fit was great, not just good. This is excellent care!! During COVID-19, they have taken extra measures to ensure that customers are safe by limiting how many people there are in the store including individuals who just want to look at glasses. Every one in the store wears masks and they make sure hygiene with every single equipment that is used. Just got my eyes checked by Dr. Lukens and I had an amazing experience! Throughout the years I've been jumping from eye doctors to eye doctors, trying to find the right one. Other places I've been to, seem to either be rushing or up-selling, which obviously makes for a poor experience. Dr. Lukens is very knowledgable, takes his time, and really seems to care about his patients. I have a very minuscule stigmatism in my left eye and my right eye was perfect. He did not try to up-sell and actually informed me that I do not need glasses. I've been to another optometrist who actually gave me a prescription, but honestly the glasses never felt "right" so I didn't wear those. The staff were professional and got the job done, I have no complaints there! Throughout the process, both the staff and Dr. Lukens informed me multiple times that the room and equipment have been cleaned and sanitized, which made me feel at ease. Dr. Lukens was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions, during and after my exam. His office staff was friendly and very helpful. I've been coming to Eyewise for a couple of years now and it has always been a positive experience. I've always felt comfortable at this office because the staff here don't seem pushy. But this 5-star rating is especially for my recent visit! Dr. Fong is very professional, knowledgeable, and approachable. For my eye exam and contact lens fitting, I was given a pair with the new prescription to test out in the office. It looked clear at first, but I noticed my vision could've been more crisp, which I had pointed out to Dr. Fong. He then gave me a pair of astigmatism correction contacts to take home and try out. I really appreciated him listening to my concern because turns out -- those were the ones that were better for my eyesight! Dr. Lukens was my eye doctor for several years, and I wish he was still my optometrist. When I moved to San Jose, I would still commute to Alameda for an appointment because he was just that great. However, I'm 300 miles away now so that isn't possible. He takes his time and his exams are thorough - it's not just a quick here's your prescription and off you go (which is what I've been experiencing). His staff are excellent and he has great bedside manner. The office is clean and the prescription is typed so it's legible! I'll be honest, I haven't had much experience with any optometrists. As a child I dreamed of having glasses (not sure if it was because I thought they looked cool or because they had the mysterious affect of making their wearers look 100x more intelligent). Little did I know my dream would one day become a reality. Thanks to years of school and computer work my eyes, I'm sure, like many of those currently reading this review, have suffered greatly. I had begun struggling to focus on my phone, text in books, as well as my computer screen. Finally I caved and booked an appointment. Upon first glance the office is modern, well organized and clean. Both the front of office staff and MD's are very friendly and informative; I quickly felt at ease despite not knowing what to expect. The exam was quite thorough and took less than 30 minutes. Dilation was disconcerting after leaving the office, but that is to be expected. Both doctors I've seen have always checked in with me prior to dilation to make sure it was a good time, bed side manner is so important! During my last visit I picked out a pair of clear frames and was called the next day by the lady who helped me to ask if I wanted to select another set. Apparently the ones I wanted were back ordered and wouldn't be in stock for several weeks. I was okay with waiting. She even called a couple of weeks later to update me on the status of my new glasses! I was quite impressed with the excellent customer service. LITERAL LIFESAVERS!!!!!! I'm not even exaggerating! So fun lil story- I was wearing my right eye contact for the past week since I lost my left eye contact and to my surprise I woke up this morning and my right eye contact ripped in half as I was getting ready for work. Great, awesome, spectacular, love that for me!!!! Mind you, I don't have my pair of glasses since they got stolen on my trip to NYC back in April! Anyways, so I'm like great I have to call off and now I have to figure out a way to get a new pair of contacts before my Vegas trip next week AND on top of that I can't see so how am I going to survive!? lol a bit dramatic- yes, but seriously like idk what I was going to do! I would not recommend nor come again but I will admit my issue was resolve which people can take that however they will. Eye appointment great. Great staff and Optometrist! Dr. Fong was very very thorough with my full eye exam. He was very knowledgeable and took his time answering all my questions. I would recommend this business. HOWEVER, something still felt odd about my vision. So 2 days later, I saw another optometrist that has been in practice for over 20 years. She was able to find a small tear near my retina which is possibly causing all my floaters and visual disturbances. She then referred me to a retina specialist for further treatment. If i had not followed my gut and gotten a second opinion who knows what could have happened to my vision. read more

I was looking for a new eye doctor after disappointing experiences at the Alameda lenscrafters. Eyewise had good reviews so thought I'd give them a call. To my delight, I was able to schedule an appointment for the same day. Great! Dr. Fong (who is in on Fridays and Saturdays I was told) was knowledgable, patient, and charming. When I mentioned the issues I'd been having with monthly contacts in the past, he was able to recommend a new brand of 2-week contacts for me to try. Heading out, the front desk staff had already pulled up a comparison for the out of pocket costs for using my insurance vs my husbands, and were otherwise quite helpful. Great experience over all. I've been going to see Alex Lukens at Eyewise Optometry for years, and have always received courteous, professional and thorough treatment by both the technicians, and by Dr Lukens. The technicians have been there since my first appointment years ago, and they are flawless at what they do: I accidentally stepped on the glasses I'd got from Eyewise a couple years ago and it was a long shot that they might be able to be repaired at all, but after 25 minutes, I walked away with like-new glasses without even being charged, given that I was a longtime client. My first exam since COVID-19. As usual the staff is always nice and respectful. I was greeted with a friendly smile. Everyone was wearing a mask, YEAH! Signed a COVID-19 release form which is to be expected. Within a couple of minutes I was taken to the back to take pictures of my eye, play the flash game and 3D pictures. Rachel (sorry for the spelling) cleaned everything with a alcohol wipe. Took eye measurements, played flash bomb and 3D pictures of the inside of my eyes. Throughout the process Rachel was very courteous. Next I was taken to the exam room. Oops almost bumped into the wall. My bad, forgot to put on my glasses. Enter the exam room and within a couple of minutes Dr Lukens entered. Always cordial and nice. Asked about the family and told me about his family in A town. Starter my exam, boy I am blind. Did the normal routine 1 or 2....... Getting older does not help. Couldn't see as well and was struggling with the letters. Anyway prescription wasn't bad, slight change.. all said and done Dr Lukens was very thorough. He brought up a 3D image of my eye ball and explained in detail the structure and health of my eye. Don't worry all good. Dr. Lukens brought outside to wait for my eyes to dilate. I looked at the selection to pick my new specs. Not a large selection but found a cool pair of sun glasses and ordered the same frames for my regular glasses I wear today. Over great experience, staff and doctor! Thumbs up! read more

He is always very welcoming, friendly, and really cares about his patients. He always gets our prescriptions perfectly dialed in, I never have headaches or any problems with my glasses. For that he gets 4 stars. Maybe even 4.5. Staff - Not as impressed. Too young to really have much experience under their belts. Made some comments that were downright inaccurate in terms of a fitting. Based on that and the small selection of frames, they get an overall 3. ............. Revised to a 1. I had the most awful experience with the staff who make appointments. I've been here once, and I received phenomenal care and treatment. Today, I called to make an appointment, and the first person I spoke to was short with me and gave no reason or alternative dates for an appointment. The second person I spoke with laughed at me and told me that they are booked until the middle June. I will never come back here. read more

Dr. Lukins is extremely thorough and thoughtful. I have a peculiar problem with glass prescriptions because of differences between my two eyes--very tricky to get prescriptions that work. He worked hard to get me the best glasses possible given my condition. He had me come for a follow up exam just to make sure my responses were consistent. Highly recommend. A previous person posted one star because of limited appointment availability. Perhaps that person should just take the appointment--can't review someone if you haven't had the appointment. read more

It's mod, the music is great, there is an art gallery on the walls, and Raj is the most professional, friendly optomistrist I have ever encountered in an Dr's office situation. I have been working through an eye issue with Dr. Lukens, and have never been so thoroughly and thoughtfully treated. He is willing to listen to me as a patient, and prescribe treatments that work not only for my issue, but for my lifestyle. We needed to find a new Optometrist when our insurance changed - most of the providers we saw were pretty run of the mill or chain type stores - saw Dr. Lukin's office listed and lo and behold! A Cal grad (Go Bears) AND right across the water from us. A match made in heaven! I concur about all reviews - Raj is awesome (tho I'm jealous about all of the nifty frames he wears). And Alex is great! The first Optometrist that actually explains what the heck all of tests are for (and I really love the little farmhouse - you need to go for an exam to get this part!). Very cool selection of unusual frames - not inexpensive but if you're wearing them evey day then it's absolutely worth the splurge. I'm a huge fan of Dr. Lukens for both kids and adults! I took my 6-year-old daughter to see Dr. Lukens as she was complaining about eye pain. He has a young son who attends our preschool and he was absolutely wonderful with my daughter. He was comfortable, warm, and didn't talk down to her. He examined her thoroughly but kept her engaged, and in the end gave us some suggestions for what was causing the eye trouble and how to address it -- without needing any prescriptions or expensive specialized products! I also noticed that he was showing and had an opening for a local artists' work. He's connected to the community, warm, and kind. He also had a good eye for what looks good on people and steered my husband towards some great frames. Couldn't recommend more highly! read more
