Very disappointed with the service I received from Sharon at Dr Young's office. So much so, I will probably leave and use Kaiser Vision Essentials for glasses. I have no problem with Dr Young, he provided me with excellent care and answered all my questions. I retired, and I wanted to get a set of Transitions eyeglasses w/ my current prescription. Sharon said they have them, and charged me about $300 after my VSP discounts. A week later she tells me the lab can only make them with thicker lenses, but can't tell me how thick. I ask for a full refund. Sharon offers to have the glasses made as-is as an extra set. I said no thanks, that's not what I want. I got my refund. So next, I asked Sharon for clip-on shades. She offers me a custom made set for about $100. Their supplier said they don't have them, and they need two months to get them. TWO MONTHS? Are you using an overseas manufacturer? Sharon said "yes, most likely." Guess what? They don't have it. What a waste on time. So I tried Kaiser Vision Essentials for the first time. Got the glasses I wanted in two weeks. read more

At Marina Village Optometry, my husband & I had a great experience with our appointment. We had been looking for an Optometrist in Alameda and found this location at Marina Village while ordering food nearby. It was very convenient, and having a very professional staff, made the appointment very easy for us from start to finish. Dr. Young explained what changes have occurred and corrections that need to be done. He made it easy to understand and answered questions & concerns. Their guidance in helping to select the right glasses went seemingly easy. We have VSP insurance which they are able to work with and explained thoroughly the breakdown of exam and costs of glasses. Pair of sunglass lenses, 3 months out of warranity(if they provide one) returned due to de-lamination of the lenses. Young lady at desk said it was due to leaving glasses in "hot car". Offered quote to replace lenses. Don't think I want similar lenses for another $450 that will de-laninate again in use. Never heard of sunglass lenses that would come apart in a parked car or that excuse for any glasses. read more

Went in for a basic eye exam. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The eye tests were done in a very competent manner. Dr Makedonsky was engaged and took the time to explain the results of the exam. It was as good of an experience as you can have getting an eye exam. Recommend! read more

Staff was very kind when I was purchasing glasses. I was advised I may need them adjust 2-3 times a year. Went back after 2 months to have them adjusted (too loose on face) and as shown a statement they would not be responsible if the glasses broke. I just came here for the first time to get glasses and contact lenses. The staff were very kind and welcoming. The doctor was very professional and prompt. The women at the front desk were really helpful and patient with me in picking out lenses. I liked that they had the contact lenses in stock. Not family/mother friendly! I came in to pick up my glasses with my then 2 -year old. My child was crying and I was trying to soothe him (get his Ipad out, calm him down, etc...) The manager asked me to leave the store and step out because my child was crying and I was disturbing the people in the office. Are you kidding me! I grabbed my child and stepped out. She closed the door behind me (my purse and other belongings were inside) and continued my appointment. I told her to mail me my glasses and that I didn't feel comfortable in the office and with a business that would be so unfriendly to a mother and child. I left in tears. She texted me and apologized. Sharon is the best! I have been going here since I started to need glasses which was 2020. Sharon is very knowledgeable and experienced in the healthcare industry and she is very savvy about insurance. I changed jobs and had an insurance change. They don't accept my insurance because I changed however I still go to see Sharon and pay out of pocket as I tried in network places and I don't get the level of expertise that Sharon provides. read more

After calling almost every optometrist in Alameda asking if they see children with special needs, this was one of the first places that said yes. I explained that my son may take a little longer and Sandra was very understanding and said they would book extra time for us just in case. When we arrived Sandra was very welcoming and kind. The other staff was not. A lady took us to do some vision tests and looked a little annoyed when my son look a while to get comfortable or would shift right when she was going to take a picture. We finished all the tests and were lead to the exam room. I heard whispering outside for a while, then the doctor came in. He didn't acknowledge my son, just faced me and said they were not equipped to see him and we should visit our former provider, but that we were still welcome to purchase glasses here. I told him the former provider was now an hour away from our new house in Alameda, and he kept repeating that he thinks they are better equipped to handle him. The discrimination and rudeness from the doctor brought me to tears. When we were leaving, Sandra was very apologetic and kind while the girl that did the eye tests was smirking behind her. This office engages in dishonest business practices. They are rogues and will be brazen when wrong. (Be prepared to be given the runaround once you've made a full payment upfront). If you enter into a transaction with them and they don't do the right thing or uphold their end, make sure to keep them accountable. No one is above the law. If you choose to visit, be wary of 'Sharon Ong'. Her behavior switches depending on who she is dealing with. Sharon is very aggressive and lies a lot. Sharon is unlike the typical front desk assistant- she will audaciously get very personal in dealing with you. She has a bad temper. (Although she might be unstable). It appears that she is indispensable to the business owner (Chris Young); it seems he has given her a lot of leeway at his practice and/or is heavily reliant on her. Be careful out there folks... Whenever dealing with a business, always keep in mind that organizational culture tends to flow from top to bottom. So, do not be fooled by the facade. I am reviewing the Marina Village Optometry shop, not Christopher Young OD (whom I've never gone to). I go here to buy my glasses, and I highly recommend them. They have a decent selection of frames, but the experience and quality is what I am most drawn to. The shop is calm and relaxing, a pleasant place to shop for glasses. The people who work there are excellent. They are very helpful with looking up your insurance and making recommendations for which options to get and what they are like, showing examples, etc. Also, they don't try to push you toward expensive frames, and they are honest in telling you what looks good with your face shape and prescription. My favorite is that they are considerate of my needs - I take a long time to decide (like, a really long time), and I don't want someone hovering over me; these folks are really nice about giving me space and time when I let them know I'll look at the frames and let them know when I need a hand. And the second I need help, they are on it! Other places have people who either hover and won't go away, or they go away and you can never get their attention again. I recommended this place to a friend, who went there shopping for glasses during the pandemic, and she said they were very courteous about Covid-safety and she had a very comfortable experience. I've been going to see Dr. Young for the past year now. He's conveniently located steps away from my office. I can call usually call in and get an appointment right away! Last year, I bought new frames from my friend, and took them to Dr. Young to get the lenses put in. He scratched the frame a little. It was barely noticeable, but he ordered a new one for me anyway!!! Awesome service!!! And since I didn't use my frame benefits, I was told I could use it on sunglasses. To continue with the trend of 5 Stars, I have to say, I was completely and utterly impressed with the level of service I received from beginning to end. This morning, I called to set an appointment. Robert was very nice and very accommodating with the appointment time. Once I arrived, I signed in, filled out some documents, and was in the exam room. Dr. Young came in and was awesome. We went through the two exams for contacts and glasses very quickly and were out in something like... 10-15 mins. The rest of the time was spent with Robert, going through their selection of glasses. We came across a pair that we all thought looked good, and a sale was made! In the end, I walked out very happy with my purchase, very happy with Robert, and very happy with my overall experience with this place. This review is for Sharon. I have never went in office before. But I was in a dire situation (that I did put myself in). My original optometrist had a full schedule and under usual circumstances didn't want to give me a trial pair. I have very poor eyesight and no glasses, enough that I cant walk very far or clearly drive. I mistook the box I had on my shelf as my own, but were actually my mom's. My prescription expired so I called around to several different optometrists in Oakland and Alameda. Spoke to about 8 till I reached this office. Sharon couldn't schedule me the day I called but if I can send in my old prescription, she could attempt to give me a trail pair that would last me till my appointment the following week. In the end, Sharon made several phone calls and kept in touch with me. Found out my old prescription limited me to one brand that her office didn't have on hand and after staying on the phone with my old optometrists for more than 5 minutes. They offered me a pair if I were to go back to them. I am still with my old optometrists but I would choose this office for the service that I received. Sharon seemed very knowledgeable and told me details about my insurance and dates that I wasn't aware of. read more

Excellent service! I went in today since I lost my glasses last night. They had a wide selection from name brands to regular brands. I made my selection and came back with a prescription. It was ready in an hour! No transition nor reflectives but I understand they would need to send it out. I am extremely happy and will be back once I can get another one through my insurance. Excellent service. The staff were new to me, so I was a bit apprehensive. I love Dr. Young, so figured he'd probably have selected good staff. Well, they were terrific! Fit me with the BEST pair of progressives I've ever had. Uber-light titanium frames, so I can wear all day. Special anti-scratch coating on lenses, so I wasn't forced into heavier glass ones. Plus, shape and frame color that work well with my face and my red hair. So happy! Glasses are a young fortune, so you don't want to be unhappy. read more

I am sorry to say; I have had only trouble with this place. I could not even be bothered to go back or call them to correct my last glasses that I just found out yesterday at my eye doctor that it did not even have the correct prescription. No wonder all the money that I paid went to waste; since I was never able to use or see out of those glasses. I see all the good comments about Robert; but I had nothing but bad luck with him. I went there 2 years in a row; and decided to give them another chance after the 1st year. But definitely I will stay away from this place. PLEASE DO NOT VISIT THIS DOCTOR'S OFFICE WITHOUT INQUIRING ALL HIDDEN FEES OR UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERT IN NEGOTIATION. The reason for the low review is not regarding my experience with the actual eye or contact lens exam, but rather the logistics and costs involved. When being examined, I was not told there would be an extra cost for a contact lens evaluation. This evaluation included Dr. Young asking me to try ONE pair of contacts of a different brand, that I was reluctant to try in the first place. I told him I was happy with my old pair, but he insisted and said he could not write me a prescription (although it is the exact same for glasses and contacts) without charging me for trying this ONE pair of contacts. My parents have two separate insurance plans that cover my eye exams. I typically use my mother's, which is $110 toward total costs and my father's, which provides me $175 toward glasses and only a $7.50 co pay for ANY exam at ANY price. I've always been able to get glasses, lenses, and contacts while managing to pay just under $50 at my old optometrist's, as the $175 would cover my frames and lenses, and my mother's $110 would cover most of my contact lens costs. After the exam and calculating charges, I was told I would have to pay $55.75 for my exam, PLUS $36 for my frames, PLUS a separate charge of $31 for my glasses lenses (which were not upgraded in anyway. No anti-glare, no coating, and I did not upgrade to thinner lenses). They then had the audacity to ask me about ordering contacts.... which would cost me over $100 out of pocket!!!! This entire visit for exam, glasses and contacts would cost me around $225 when I was used to paying under $50! Please tell me why I then had to debate with the office manager for an hour to walk away with NO contact lens and a total charge of $135, using BOTH my mother and my father's insurance plans. They were purposefully using my insurance coverage in the least cost efficient way in order for us to pay them more upfront and out of pocket. And to add to that, the office manager who tried to help me fit my glasses attempted to give me the display pair, which were obviously old and slightly lopsided, without even asking if I wanted a new pair, WHICH WAS THE SAME COST. The people who work here provided great service during my eye exam but they are not honest people and they certainly aren't trying to help the customer and patient. I will not be coming back and neither should you. read more

I have been before but today's experience was truly amazing. I'd. Even experiencing sone retina issues so had my eyes poked and prodded abd bright lights shone in them repeatedly so I was a bit grumpy with the young ladies as well as Christopher and they were as kind as can be. They helped me verify that my prescription while mostly the same would be slightly better with my new glasses. I now have a beautiful new pair send to the lab. I know I will enjoy wearing them. June 2017, I have never been so discussed in my entire life with a pair of glasses.. I've been wearing glasses since the age of 8 years old. Pro: The doctor was prompt and professional - The staff seemed to be friendly and made suggestions and recommended features based on what would be best for my computer use and active life. BOY WAS I WRONG - I purchased designer frames; I like them.. It was recommended that I get - transitions lens with protective covering to protect from computer Anti-Reflective Lenses and they are bifocals. Con: When I communicated my concerns for an adjustment because the lens go dark while in doors, while watching TV, while trying to read in the light and whenever there is any type of lighting. I literary need to take off my glasses to see 10 inches in front of me. I was told I would need to cut my loses and down grade to regular lens and there would be no refund for the products that were sold to me and do not work as said. I have spent 4 months trying to deal with these glasses that I can ONLY see distance but still in the dark if there is lighting like daytime. . As far as even seeing my face in the mirror, reading a book or menu, business card, ingredients ..simple things in life. Not GOING TO HAPPEN wearing these glasses. I have to take them off and get really close. They are not offering eye care they are selling products regardless; must be on commission. . My glasses came close to $1500 and 1/3 of that was out of pocket! I am too upset to fight so all I can do is inform EVERYONE.. Please don't trust your eyes to them in regards to actually getting the glasses.. are just say No to the extras. read more
