He redid a whole lot of prior dental work, the place was like an assembly line. A pt in each room, so running from room to room, and often leaving the assistant to do crown impressions. So a tooth I had restored the crown had a gap underneath, he was nice enough to tell me he could not improve it and refunded me the money I had paid. He's a nice person, but it felt like too much like assembly line dentistry for me. I ended up going to an expensive Prosthodontist who redid the crown perfectly, no gaps and that tooth is still fine many years later, at least 10 years ago. I have no way of knowing how he practices dentistry today, as I've not been there in years to be fair. He had lots of staff and some, all friendly and many good, especially the dental hygienist Rachel, was excellent. This is a business and that's what it felt like. He redid most of my mouth, was it necessary? Who knows. This is not a bad dentist, but for me it felt like the focus was on the income volume and building a profitable practice fast. read more

I have had several unacceptable experiences with Thousand Oaks Smile Design. I finally changed dental offices to meet my expectations. I should say my complaints are about the business and not Dr. Elberts skill in dentistry. The few times I have seen him, he actually addressed my concerns to my satisfaction and that is why I gave his office a second chance with my care explained below. There were two episodes that I have questioned their quality of care or proper diagnosis of the problem. The first was a root canal that was needed for a molar I had. They referred me to an endodontist. When I went to get the procedure done, he said they could not perform the root canal because there was a crack in the tooth and it needed to be removed. So, my wallet was $350 lighter after the office visit when I should have immediately went to an oral surgeon instead. The second incident was even more troublesome. I went in for a simple crown to be placed. First, the problem was that my temporary fell off three times before I could get my permanent crown. I was not eating anything chewy at the time so the temporary should have had no trouble staying on. Then when I was given the permanent crown, it came off an additional two times. It fell off a third time, and I went back to them again to get it placed. At that time, they came to the conclusion that the tooth was cracked and needed to be removed. Because the work was performed at their office, I thought that once again I would go to their practice to treat the tooth issue. During this period of time, I had changed dental offices because of unrelated issues. I assumed that they would correct their substandard work like they had in the past for free, but since now they said the tooth was cracked and had to be removed they said to go to an oral surgeon again. So, if that was not a bad enough experience, when I went out to the lobby, I was going to be charged $180 for the office visit! I could not believe it. After going back six times to address the same tooth issue they had the audacity to charge me for the visit. I respectively protested and they did lower the charge to $95, but I still argued that the visit should have been complementary because of the poor work that was done on the tooth. They were not willing to yield charging the $95. I then just left in disgust after paying the fee. Like I said, I have now changed dentists for no customer satisfaction issues. What is perhaps more infuriating was that they told me I should have gone to my current dentist to address the same issue! That did not make any sense to me. The work was done there, and they should correct the poor crown placement that they performed, not pass it off onto the next guy. Unbelievable! read more

I didn't wait long and was greeted by Liz the dental hygienist who was so kind and explained everything she was doing. Liz was professional and had amazing bedside manner. Excellent, outstanding Dentistry. Our family Dentist retired and sold his patients mailing list to a large chain. That didn't work for us. Strip mall Dentists from a 3rd world school that graduates 2000 Dentists a semester. We read the positive reviews on Dr Elbert, graduated from a top school. I figured to try a teeth cleaning and get to know the staff. It went well so I scheduled cavity repair and crown replacement that I sorely needed. They took our Dental Insurance and they agreed to our insurance companies pricing. It was a breeze. Cosmetic and general dentistry. Talent, lots of talent. A slight upsell is on that caught me off guard but no pressure. Excellent staff, friendly and caring. Dr Elbert is tops. Very happy with the tricky and difficult work I had done. read more

This is an UPDATE. The original was my first cleaning: I will say our family was with this practice for almost 9yrs so I'll start at the beginning. I've always had problems with the person who does the insurance. Here are just a few examples: 1. When they would present an estimate of my part for work it would be high and then after insurance paid it ended up that I paid too much for my portion. So I would have to call and haggle them to get the difference back. I found this out because I review all of my EOBs. Think how many people don't review their EOBs and just let it go. So I requested they get a pre-auth before any work gets scheduled so I would only paid the correct amount. After a year or so they refused to do pre-auths. 2. Then again after reviewing my EOBs I found out I was being charged too much again. It turns out she changed some insurance coding and we were being over-charged. So I had to call insurance and get them on the phone on a 3-way call to straighten her out. Most recently, I would say in the last 5-6 yrs or so, they became a very high sales pressure office. Everytime I would go in to get my teeth cleaned the hygenist would start hyping whatever they were selling, rinses, waterpiks, some test for sleep apnea, mouth guards....etc. Whatever it was. The entire time I was getting my teeth cleaned was a sales pitch and I couldn't even say "no thank you" because her hands were in my mouth. Then when the dentist would come in to check my teeth it would start all over again. 'Hi Dr Jones I was telling Tina about our mouth guards and how it would do XYZ.....' Then the dentist that came in they would take over the sales pitch and keep pressuring. They might even start in on something new like replacing your veneers or replacing a crown that is only 4 yrs old. It was too much. And at this point I'm beginning to wonder if I can believe anything they say. To me it's important that I'm able to trust my dentist or doctor that they aren't just trying to upsell me because when something really does happen I need to believe them. And not question if it's just another upsell. The straw that broke the camel's back was around the pandemic. They started charging what they call a "lab fee". On everything. From preventative cleanings covered at 100% to crowns covered at 75%. So here's an example: They charge $150 for a crown. The contracted amount with my insurance for the crown is $100. My insurance covers 75% or $75 and my part is 25% or $25. Then on top of my part they would charge me a $50 "lab fee". So they would get the full $150. So I ended up paying $75 and essentially my part of the insurance goes from 25% to 50% just like that. Obviously I'm using made up numbers for simplicity but I already pay a sh!t ton in premiums and now I'm paying these BS "lab fees"! If you don't like my insurance, don't contract with them and I will pay cash or find another dentist [which I did] because the BS with the insurance person, the high pressure sales crap and now this. These examples and more happened with my entire family. It was non-stop and exhausting. Most people don't pay that close of attention to their EOBs, so most of the patients in that practice don't know they are getting screwed. Totally screwed. read more

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Communication is not one of their strong points. I went in with an abscessed molar, they referred to a specialist. I asked the Dr. if he would give me an antibiotic, he said he wouldn't because he didn't know what kind of antibiotic to prescribe and it might do more harm than good. When I got to the Specialist, I told him what the dentist said about the antibiotic; he chuckled. I told the specialist that I knew he handed me a load of crap just to get me out the door. The specialist, still chuckling said " yeah, he did." And that's just part of the story. I would have appreciated the truth. Smile design made the arrangements for the specialist, they sent me there later that same day. What they didn't do is check to see if my insurance was accepted. Turns out they did not take my insurance and I payed $400.00 out of pocket for a scan of the tooth. When I was told my insurance was no good there I had to tell them I can't afford treatment here. So I was back to square one. There's still more to the story.... Days later I call Smile Design and made an appointment for an extraction and asked again for an antibiotic since I had to wait a week for an oral surgeon. This time they actually helped me and called in a prescription for me. The day of the extraction I showed up to my appointment with the CT scan from the specialist on a disc and was told that they couldn't use it, that it wasn't compatible with their computer. I suspect that they were handing me another load of crap because I didn't want a to take more x-rays. ( I had enough radiation) they took x-rays the first time I was there. Anyway, save yourself a lot of trouble by going to a different dentist!! read more

I was told I needed several crowns and had several cavities. I was then emailed a treatment plan that stated it would cost over $3,000.00 with insurance. I got a second and third opinion and found out that I only had one very small cavity. I strongly recommend if your questioning your treatment plan to go see another dentist for a second opinion...there are several excellent options in the Conejo Valley that don't overcharge or do unnecessary work. Crowns bring a lot of money in for a dentist and they need to be replaced approximately every 8-10 years...think about this very carefully before you remove one of your permanent teeth! Please Do NOT go here!! I am not sure how they are getting 5 stars but they deserve 0 stars. This place over charged my husband for services that were 100% covered by his insurance. The office acknowledged they charged my husband by "mistake" and agreed to mail him a check, however they never mailed anything. Every time we call to follow up, we get the run around. We will be going to office to collect the check because they can't be trusted with mailing money back. We may have to take them to small claims court if this isn't settled soon. It's a shame a dentist that prides himself on being the dentist for the Rams has incompetent and shady people working for him.
