This is going to be long winded. Hang in there! Absolutely the best meal I've had in several years and likely the best piece of fish I've ever eaten in my life!!!! I'll get back to that! Ok, so I'm in town all week installing a new CNC fiber laser cutting machine tool at Stoll Fireplace. I'm a foodie, but I nearly never write reviews. I almost didn't come to meet Danish and experience his food because of the two bad Yelp reviews. (In spite of all the great ones) I'd like to address those bad reviews before I make MY actual review. First, that review about people dressed casual? Bullshhh. Excuse my language. I'm covered (literally) head to toe in oil, grease, and grime. Wearing a dirty Moog synthesizer T shirt that says "presets are for the weak", torn up Carhartt pants, and steel toe work boots. I was apprehensive showing up like this. Worked too late to go to the hotel and shower/change, but was really craving Indian food. Saw the sign on the door mentioning attire and was slightly apprehensive about going in. Maybe it's because I haven't shaved in over a year, maybe it's because it's his place and he can do what he wants. My opinion is that this reviewer had something else going on other than their attire. Maybe already drinking, maybe just douchy? Who knows. It's irrelevant. My server seated me immediately and treated me no different than if I was wearing a $5000 suit. I can not for sure say you won't be denied service if you come in looking rough as hell, but bottom line is I got served looking like a coal miner that just got off work. And at the very end of their posted hours. Second, the lady that said her food was cold?? Again, hogwash. No doubt in my mind that this person obviously has not experienced the world outside of Greenwood SC and isn't accustomed to how other cultures communicate. Have a little humility in your verbal/body language and Danish will treat you like royalty!! I'm certain she got offended by his tone or something he said. I'll cover more of that in my review. So here it is: Clean upscale atmosphere. Smells like heaven when you walk in the door. (He grinds his own spices!!) Server greeted me immediately when I walked in and escorted me to a table. We discussed wines and I tried a new Cab that I haven't had that was delicious. Danish came to my table and asked my what kind of food I liked. This started a long conversation about samosas, world travel, and more, ending in Danish not letting me order extra Samosas since one came free with the meal. I'll admit I was initially a touch put off that he outright wouldn't let me order two extras, but I'm so glad he didn't. (He ended up giving me an extra one free! I've never had beef in Samosas, but holy cow are they good and a lot of food! I would have been full before my entree had he let me order two extras and eat 3. Ordered the special on the servers recommendation. Crispy flounder (or tilapia, I got flounder) with breaded and fried eggplant and chicken curry. (Beef curry option) Plus an order of garlic naan. I am not kidding when I say this is best meal I've had in years! I've eaten at a lot of nice places and have paid 3 times as much for dinners that didn't hold a candle to tonights. They give you a knife, but there was nothing in the meal that didn't give easily to the side of my fork. The beef Samosas were fried crunchy and served with an excellent chutney with a decent kick! They went very well together. Like a party in my mouth! I could have eaten three, but wouldn't have had room for all the other deliciousness!! (Thank you Danish for refusing to let me order 2 more as appetizers and for throwing a second one on my plate!) The fish was just right. Lightly breaded, flaky, and seriously flavorful!! Best piece of fish I think I've ever eaten in my life! I do not have words for how good that tasted. The eggplant was equally amazing. The sauce on the plate went perfectly with everything. I enjoyed every bite. The garlic naan was good, but the onion chutney that came with it was better than anything I've ever had at any other Indian place!! So full of flavor! The curry was great. Very traditional with a little less kick than some places. (Perfect for people that think most Indian food is too spicy) Danish is going to make it mildish/medium spicy unless you request otherwise. I could have taken it a lot hotter, but certainly understand trying to avoid having food sent back for being too spicy. I am eager to return now that he knows me and ask him to kick it up a few notches!! It was still delicious. Their rice is also very traditional but like the rest of his food, with a hint extra. Danish is beyond passionate about his food. As I said to him, it's an art form. He is an artist. If I lived closer, I'd probably eat here every week and invite him to my wedding. So I'm back with another review.... I was free one Saturday evening and decided to try an old favorite... this was my 1st time at this new location.. Was pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere and had a relaxing and quiet evening. If planning dinner it is a must to call ahead and make reservations and see what is available. I was sadly disappointed that most of the food was out. So we had a couple of drinks an a few appetizers... which as you can figure where great since we were starving... Chalked it up to an off night but would return to give this one another chance... If you enjoy Indo / PAC cuisine.. you will enjoy this pleasantly quiet and romantic location.... Local friends brought us here and it far exceeded our expectations. Don't miss it- but call ahead for reservations if you can. The small rooms are intimate and beautifully decorated Indian style, the atmosphere is quiet, calm, conducive to conversation, and the food is outstanding. The food was very good and the experience was entertaining to say the least. We were the only ones in the restaurant and it is set up like a house so it felt a little awkward at first. We started off on a bad foot, but it got much better. The owner started off by asking us how we found the place, and we said Yelp. He said that Yelp was just for rednecks and that Trip Adviser was much better. We mumbled that we are big Yelpers and moved on. Once we got past that, the whole night got better. You can tell that Danish is passionate about his food and explained how he got into the business and explained how he cooked everything. It was interesting and the food was great. It ended up being a great night. Overall, it was a neat place, with a friendly if not a little eccentric owner and really great food. It would be a solid 5 if it was not for several disparaging comments about Yelp. If you have a little time and are in the mood for stimulating conversation, give it a try. read more

Chef owner was fun and personable. He definitely suggests items off the menu and the Indian was good with just enough spiciness. He's been doing this over a quarter of a century and his skill shows. Absolutely one of my most memorable dining experiences to date. Danish truly has something special here - such a rare find in a rather unlikely location! Who would have thought Greenwood SC would have such a unique establishment! Immensely enjoyed every aspect from the moment we walked in the door. The atmosphere is lovely - very eclectic and yet homey, warm, and comfortable. You'll feel like you're dining at a friend or extended family member's house, not a restaurant. The food is incredible - home-cooked, delicious, high quality, and clearly made with great care and much love. Fresh ingredients, perfectly spiced, perfectly portioned. The beef samosas and the sauce that accompanied them were phenomenal. The best part though was Danish himself - he is such a compelling character! Great sense of humor, interesting perspective and absolutely no filter - loved everything about him! He obviously makes everything himself, has very limited staff and the space is intimate, so make a reservation and give him a heads up that you're coming especially if you have more than two people - this isn't a franchise restaurant that has the capacity and means to accommodate sizable variances in demand without reasonable notice. If you're looking for an expansive menu, a plethora of waitstaff, and an expedient meal with your screaming kids and alcoholic friends - go to Applebees - but if you're looking to spend some quality time enjoying and appreciating exquisite food (as well as the company you're with) in a comfortable, inviting and adult atmosphere - with a truly captivating and comedic host, then give Danish's place a try. read more

This phenomenal restaurant, run by the former owner of the now defunct Dini's Italian Restauarant, is some of the best food you will find in Greenwood. The quality of the cuisine has changed little since its previous location, which is a good thing, as the cuisine there was stellar. The new alterations rest with the decor and ambiance, which are warm and elegant and vastly improved from their relative hole in the wall (though with its charms) to a kind of upscale family feel. The owner still offers both Italian and Indian/Pakistan foods, though the latter are only available three days a week as well as this isn't exactly the most metropolitan of locales. But you should definitely give them a try as the samosas and curries are prepared authentically and with great skill, though if you want authentic spiciness, you will have to ask. Beef, lamb, and chicken curries were all superb, and their naan is warm and fresh. This however should not lead you to believe their Italian fare is anything less than wonderful, as they serve Italian classic pastas, appetizers, and meats that will satisfy all but the pickiest of customers. If you want Indian food in Greenwood, this is your only option, and one day when there is another option, this will likely be the more delicious option. BUT the owner, Danish himself, is a tyrant. Don't dare to let him or his staff know that a mistake has been made with your order -- it's your fault for uttering a negative word! Don't dare to think of pairing an Italian appetizer with an Indian main dish -- you will be advised quite firmly to rethink that decision! Don't dare to bring a gift certificate WITH NO PRINTED EXPIRATION DATE about a year after you received it -- that annoys Danish, and although he might find a shred of mercy in his heart and let it go JUST ONCE, you will leave knowing that you annoyed him and that he will remember you next time. These pieces of advice I give you from having eaten there only twice. After the first time, I vowed to never return, except for having received the gift certificate -- which, as you can infer, I did not rush to use. Now, if someone unwittingly thinks it a good idea to give me such a gift, I will regift it to someone I don't like. AVOID. read more

Arrived and waited to be sat for about 15 minutes. I had to go near the kitchen to ask to be sat at a table. The owner very rudely asked if we had a reservation and told us that they no longer served Italian even though it's on the sign outside. When we asked about the lamb, he said lamb was only for those who made reservations. Went to Danish's Trattoria today....oh boy...what an experience. Let's break it down by good...the bad and down right ugly.... The Good - the restaurant is setup in an old home...for some it might be weird...I thought it was very nice. The decor was sort of Asian renaissance. The food was overall good. I'd give it 7 out or 10 in taste. Portions were small for price charged. Main entree ranging from $17 to $23. The Naan seemed like it was store bought but the home made spicy chutney was very good. The Bad - the owner was full of sarcastic comments....in the beginning I interpreted as dry humor but as the dinner came to an end it was down right rude, insulting and condescending The Ugly - at the end of the meal I used the napkin (cloth) to wipe my face and nose. Since the food was pleasantly spicy my nose my running and I used the napkin to clean my nose....the owner/server come out running and telling me that I should go to the bathroom and use the toilet paper on my nose and not use his cloth napkin. He said that it was "bad manners" and not the "etiquette" to use the napkin on my nose. I told him if you do not want people to use the cloth napkin than serve paper napkins. He had the audacity to tell me that I have been drinking...we had ordered 3 beers between the 3 of us...it's less than a glass of beer per person. Not to mention that he charged $25 for a Belgian beer. After this " not so nice" conversation I told him to bring the check. He included 20% gratuity in the check. When I asked if this was their standard practice to automatically charge 20% gratuity for the party of 3 and if this was disclosed in the menu or anywhere in the restaurant (it was not)...he got mad and said...fine I will take it off. If he was not this rude I would have left him more than 20%. We still left him a good tip....now thinking back I should not have. Besides food...what separates one restaurant from another is the quality of service they provide. There is a reason why people go out to dine rather than ordering delivery. Wish there were negative stars available for the service....this place would get plenty of negative stars. I definitely would not be going back there. read more

It was just ok, when I arrived there is no direction or hostess to assist and I wanted almost 20 minutes to place a to-go order. While the food was good, I ordered the Lamb Curry, my main concern was the whole spices that are used. Several times I found myself biting into a whole clove or other whole spice. This of course took away from the entire meal and made for a bad experience. I have friends that have dined here regularly and they enjoy it. I give this place a 4. Based on the food, it's a 3.5/5. The food is pretty good and fairly priced. It just wasn't amazing. I'm not a fan of their curry but you SHOULD try their samosas. They're delicious! The owner is super nice and the service was great. I give the service a 4.5. If you want a waiter who is super talkative and personal, this place is for you. If you want a little more intimacy/privacy, the waiter might get a little annoying. Definitely a personal preference. I didn't know Greenwood had an Indian restaurant. This place is nice inside. House turned into restaurant. We were greeted and seated promptly. The owner gave us a little history of the place and his previous restaurant which explains the Italian cuisine on the menu. I ordered the Tandoori chicken with chicken curry. Both were delicious. First time eating here yesterday with friends who recommended Danish's. Owner is super friendly and funny. Makes you feel welcome. Restaurant is very clean and is in a remodeled home. Felt like we were dinning in his home. I ate the flounder and wow it was amazing very delicious and just the right amount of spice and seasoning. My wife had the tandoori chicken and loved it. I've had Indian food in Greenville SC before and just thought it was OK. After coming here not sure I could get Indian cuisine anyplace else. Just go and try this place. This is the first restaurant review I've ever written, as Danish's was a truly wonderful experience both times my husband and I visited. Another reason is because we've not experienced any of the negative responses I've read. Danish was a wonderful host and he went above and beyond to make sure our dining experience was exceptional. Our first visit was a spur of the moment decision and we did not make reservations. Danish was by no means rude, but suggested in the future we do so. He was the only one there and was in the process of closing. He invited us in and made our meal himself. On this visit we ordered the Tandoori Chicken as it was exceptional! Last night we had reservations and were the last couple to dine. Danish didn't rush us to finish. Actually after he closed, he sat with us and we found his personality absolutely delightful. He then invited us to join him in the beautiful garden outside and we spent hours! We enjoyed our time with him even more than the delicious food (the Beef and King Prawn curry this time). Not only do I consider Danish's Trattoria one of the absolute best restaurants I've ever dined at, I am delighted to call him a friend. I implore anyone reading the negative reviews to not let those deter you. Being from the D.C. area, I'm lucky to have many options for unique and fine dining. My parents relocated to Ninety Six, SC, in 2011 and I've never been to a restaurant in the area that I wanted to revisit...until tonight! My mom has been talking about how wonderful the food, atmosphere and hospitality is at Danish's Trattoria, and so we made a date of it tonight! Wow!! What a wonderful surprise beyond the walls of a welcoming little house. The menu is a mix of Indo-Pak and Italian as a result of Danish's upbringing and the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. My father isn't too adventurous with food, but even he raved about the curry after loving his chicken parm! And he loved the samosas and eggplant too! Mom and I had a bit of everything - flounder was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth, beef curry was delish, chicken sagg was perfect...yumm! Not only is the food top-notch and worthy of praise, but Danish is utterly charming! He made a fantastic wine recommendation and curated a perfect menu for us...mom and I wanted him to give us suggestions...couldn't have made better selections myself. A hidden gem! You would never assume the best Indian food around would be found in Greenwood, SC but I promise you Danish will deliver! We are often in Greenwood to visit family and Danish's has become a family tradition (and wonderful a treat!). He will only use the freshest ingredients and produce. In fact he once went and picked the basil in his garden that moment in order to make the sauce we ordered. Definitely ask Danish what he recommends you order while youre there because he will not lead you astray. The specialty is the lamb curry, but any of his curries and other dishes will be a treat for your taste buds! Enjoy! read more

My daughter from Greenwood brings her out of town business associates here and they love the place. My wife and I got our first experience at Danish's a couple weeks ago and we love it too. While we are not that familiar with Indian or Indo-Pak cuisine, we do recognize great service, attention to detail, and a fine dinning ambiance worthy of discriminating adults. The several dinning rooms are small and quiet; richly appointed and dark. Expect the owner/chef to service the table himself. I enjoyed the Prawn Curry while my wife and daughter feasted on the Beef and Chicken Curry respectively. The Samosa and Chutney was wonderful. I encourage you to try this place and if you are like us and know little or nothing about Indian food, just put yourself in Danish's hands. I believe you will not be disappointed. Quite simply the best Indian food I've ever had. I live in Charlotte, and often work in New York, D.C., Dallas, ... Etc. In my travels, I have yet to find an Indian food restaurant that rivals Danish's. My wife and I try to go whenever we are in the Greenwood area. Danish himself is always there and prepares the food with the freshest ingredients, often from his own farm. He offers Italian, but you won't want to pass up on his Indian food.
