Deceptive sales policy and hostile owner. Asked at checkout if men's bike shorts were returnable as I was considering buying as a gift; employee confirmed yes. Brought them back unused with all tags on, but the owner refused, claiming "no clothing returns." The selling clerk was there and didn't deny telling me returns were allowed. No proof of this "policy" provided, just flat out refusal. The receipt doesn't list a return policy and the website's "Store Policies" link is broken. When I pushed back, the owner sneered, gave me a big, fake smile, and dismissively told me to "go sell them on Marketplace." I never write Yelp reviews, but this guy was immediately hostile and incredibly rude. When I flagged that as a problem, he said he gets that a lot. With all the amazing bike shops in town (staff at Wheels and Sprocket and Bike Fix are excellent and polite), this guy doesn't deserve any business. I went to get my Schwinn bike fixed about two years ago I went to to tell the guy with the beard to replace the brakes lines and the line to change the derailer I wanted brand new and crank arms for pedals and why the bike was so slow when I came back to pick up my bike he said that he save me money by using the same garbage lines for brakes and the derailer line he put the crank arms loose and never found the problem why he bike was so slow we got into an argument because he didn't know how to fix it so he told me not to come back a couple of months later he crashed his car and I saw him and I was laughing because he is racist the front brake was rubbing against the disc and back too the crank arms were loose the one that laughed last laugh best read more

I recently brought my bike into Dan's to have the brakes, rotors, and fenders fixed. They told me that it would be a week before it would be ready. After nearly a week I received a phone call saying that they had ordered the wrong part and that I would have to wait longer for the correct part to come into the shop. When the bike was finished I excitedly came into the shop as I use my bike daily. I even sang a jovial song about my bike to the person at the front desk. We both laughed. After I paid I noted that there was a new scratch on my handle bars and I asked what had happened. They said that it was like that when it got there, though that wasn't true. As I said, I bike daily and know my bike well. A manager was called to the front by the person at the service desk, and he came at me with a terrible attitude. He blamed me for the handle bars, and coldly told me that he was running a "legitimate business". In a angry voice he said "I'll give you free handlebar tape if you want." Which, at this point, is not what I wanted. I said that I would prefer to just take my bike and go, which is what I did. On the ride home I noted that the front fender was rubbing against the tire. This "legitimate business", who delivered a bike late, didn't fully fix the things they said they would, and threw attitude just lost a customer. Dan's is such a great local bike shop! How awesome is it that they've had this business since the 40's? I also learned they're third generation which I think is really cool. We popped in here last weekend to get some chain oil for our bikes. We didn't have a preference on the type so we were just peeking around. We were greeted when we walked in right away and everyone inside was wearing masks. The open concept here is great so you can easily see the bike selection. They also have a ton of parts and accessories to choose from. The chain oil was appropriately priced and we were able to find it easily. Everything in the shop was neatly organized and they asked if we needed help finding anything. They also have two shop dogs!! I love seeing animals welcome indoors and just lovin' life. We wish we had more time to shop around here because of all the things we didn't have time to check out. It was a gorgeous morning and we had our long ride all planned out, only to get my bike out and notice that my back brake was rubbing badly against the tire. After trying to remedy it unsuccessfully, and finding that most of the local bike shops we're familiar with are closed, we stopped at Dan's. I recently got back into cycling after a 34 year break. I went to Dans a week ago with a friend. A young man came out to help us, and we stayed that we were just getting back into riding, and we could use some advice with seats. The only thing he did was show us the seats on the display, no real advice, no extra words. We wanted to do additional advice, and to buy additional things, but frustrated, we left. A week later I went back alone, with a list of questions. A different young man came out, and while I did get to ask my questions, and I sorry of got answers, again, the answers were with the bare minimum number of words possible, no advice, no enthusiasm. I feel like Dan deducts pay from them, for each extra word spoken. I went back, same day, with a flat, they fixed it, I paid and left. I think I saw the owner there, he didn't seem interested in dealing with customers. I have been in business for 40 years, and never did such a horrible job of helping my customers. Three trips there, and each time they proved to be only a little better than worthless. I hope the shop is sold to someone that is enthusiastic about cycling. Well I bought a $400 bike and I assumed it was ready to ride since it was up for sale(I mean who would put something up for sale if it's not ready?) but the pedals were wobbly and on the 2nd day I had a flat tire. Dan's has always been very responsive to my repair needs and willing to provide quick service to my bike whenever I needed a small fix, but this past week, they went above and beyond. I had my bike in for a tune up a few weeks earlier, and most everything seemed to be in working order. However, after riding it a bit, I noticed a few outstanding issues, so I had to return to have them addressed. They quickly delved into the issue and addressed it with replacement parts, and since they felt they should have identified this in the tune-up, there was no additional parts or labor charge. I got better service at Walmart from an employee that just happened to be passing by us and spent time helping us test the different size frames, making suggestions, and making sure my daughter was comfortable on the bike and that everything on the bike was working and fitted on properly. Our one bike needed a new inner tube before we could go riding same day - brought it in on a Sunday afternoon, the guy took a look, gave us a quick recap of what he saw and showed us the leak - we asked him to go ahead with the replacement and voila...done! We called about a replacement tire. We were told that they have 2 of those type of tires left. Headed down to buy one tire, less than an hour after speaking to someone over the phone. When we arrived, we were told by an employee that they have been out of those tires for a long time. Disappointing. Very poor service over the phone and in person. Certainly wouldn't recommend. Thanks but no thanks on the tire. My husband even called the day before and was told about the 2 tires. We understood that they could have been sold so We called before we started out on our 35/40 minute drive to get to your bike shop. We were told again, yes we have the tires. When we arrived and inquired about the tires, we were told, " we haven't had those tires in a long time, we don't even have the inner tubes". One of the greatest feelings in life is when you pick up an over 3-year-old bike after it has been tuned up, and the ride home, on roads recently soaked with rain, feels as if the journey was taken on a new bike. Perhaps that sense of novelty has a lot to do with how long my bike has gone without a proper tune-up and the bike-degrading weather conditions to which I subjected it, but of course I have to commend Dan's Bike Shop for revitalizing my machine. It's like the rebirth of an aluminum phoenix. By my count, 7 or 8 components on my bike needed to be replaced, and that was done for a price lower that what I had initially expected. Also, the work on my bike was finished a day sooner than the provided estimate. I live in Austin, Texas, but was travelling to Chicago back in January for business. While in Chicago, I wanted to attend a Holistic Cycles wheelbuilding class. Christopher Wallace at Holistic pointed me to Dan's, and the folks at Dan's worked with me by phone to help me select all the parts I'd need to build the type of wheel I wanted. They determined spoke lengths, helped me choose a rim based upon riding style and terrain, and delivered everything to Holistic Cycles' location in Oak Park in advance of my arriving for the class. After the class, Christopher dropped my finished wheel off at Dan's, and Dan's packed and shipped the wheel to me in Austin for less than it would have cost me to pay to check it in as baggage on my flight. The box was a wheel-specific shipping box, and my wheel arrived quickly, safely and soundly. Dan's seems blessed with knowledgeable, caring staff and owners who provide old-fashioned customer service at a competitive price. What a great place! We went in on Saturday morning just a few minutes after opening and it is clear that the place is very popular. Get in early if you need repairs on the weekend. Despite the rush, the staff was extremely friendly and polite. My son's shift or cable was out of alignment and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Truth be told, I'm not much of a talker. And after a little research I could figure out a range of how much $ it would cost to tune up my second hand Schwinn. Employee that helped me noted that my front tire was in good shape and probably not in need of replacement as were my break pads. I prefer honesty vs grandiose phony salesmanship. So right off the bat didn't feel that I was being taken. As for being nickled and dimed, I would expect to pay for all services rendered. The "WOW" factor is a little overrated in my point of view. One day on my 10 mile ride from the school, where I teach, to home I got a flat tire. I walked about 3 miles and arrived at Dan's Bike shop. The technician had my bike repaired in about 10 minutes. They also had cold water available. It was a very hot day. The cost was very reasonable. On another occasion I brought in a bicycle I bought at another store.
