We had heard great things about Dan's business. Unfortunately, when he brought his crew out to do the work, they cut a couple wires which caused our parking structure lights to go out. We hired an electrician and Dan agreed (oral agreement) to pay the electrician for his company's part in this and now that it is done, he refuses to pay saying nothing was in writing. I have had my brick chimney repaired multiple times in the past by different people, with terrible results. I have needed repairs on the chimney cap and several courses of brick for several years now, but have not felt comfortable contacting potential providers via internet searches. I happened to notice a crew working on a chimney on Harvey street on Monday. I drove and walked by several times. They looked very professional, and their work looked very professional, so I stopped and talked to them. As a result, I engaged them to Work on my chimney. To my surprise, they scheduled my job on Wednesday. When they showed up it was not hard to see they knew what they were doing. They had all of the right equipment and all of the brick and supplies that they needed. Five hours later the job was done. The chimney looked great, and the work area was completely clean. We had water coming in our chimney during some heavy rain. At first we called a chimney company. We learned that chimney companies are knowledgeable about the inside of chimneys, but maybe aren't the best for the outside of a chimney - i.e., the masonry part. So we called 2 masonry companies and both were unreliable (didn't come out for the estimate when promised, quoted us exorbitant prices and then THEY didn't even follow up with us). Then I did hardcore sleuthing and called Dan's Custom Brickwork because they had positive ratings on Yelp, Google, and Angie's List. When I called, they scheduled a next-day appointment for an estimate in a 30-minute window (i.e., 'Dan will be there between 2:30 and 3 o'clock tomorrow') and HE WAS. That's awesome. He was super friendly and a straight shooter. He was honest about what was NEEDED and what would be IDEAL beyond what was immediately necessary. He quoted me cheaper than the other masonry companies, but that's NOT why I went with Dan. I went with them because I trusted him since he showed up, was open and honest about my options, and he was very knowledgeable (been doing this 31 years). I got an emailed written estimate the next day, which I signed and returned. At the beginning of the next week, John and Francisco did the job across two days. They were very professional and friendly and did a really excellent job. I'm very thankful for Dan, John, and Francisco and the great work they did. I liked them so much, that I'm having Dan's Custom Brickwork rip out my back deck and laying concrete for my patio. Dan was very honest about patio options and was willing to work with me regarding timing, helping out with other stuff, etc. He's really great. My neighbor said he's thinking of replacing concrete slabs in his driveway, and I recommended Dan's Custom Brickwork. A few months ago my husband and I ask for an estimate to get some light brick work done around our house. The owner came by and was very friendly and gave a fair price and had his men over within a week to get the work done. While his men were working, they broke three branches off the right side of my Japanese maple next to my front door. This meant my maple was now uneven in the corner by my front door. I called and left a voicemail message stating that I've never had anything like this happen before and therefore didn't know how to handle this. I received a phone call back which I missed, and when I went to call them back got the voicemail again. The next several weeks I left a voicemail once a week with no call back. Finally I had my husband call, who spoke to the wife of the owner, and was asked what we wanted from them. My husband and I were in the process of getting our house ready to sell and thought that if the tree, (which I bought 4 years ago and had grown to a nice size), wasn't going to cover the area anymore we would have to remove it and plant a new one. I originally paid $80 for the tree, and thought that if we got $80 from them we could apply that toward a larger one, more the size of my current, now uneven tree. My husband was told that the wife would talk to the owner, and we would hear back. We never did. It is now been almost 2 months. My thought is that if you are going to have someone to work on your house, they should have insurance to cover anything that they break so that it can be taken care of. I'm assuming that this company does not have insurance to do that and that is why they were not interested in fixing the issue. My biggest complaint is that we never even got an apology for the broken tree. I am so tired of customer service being poor these days. read more

We just used DCB for the second time in two years. The first project was our front porch. The second project was a retaining wall on the side of the house. Both jobs were done extremely professionally. We are usually people who do lots of research before committing to a design. In both cases we ended up going with Dan's recommendations. Not only did he give us great advice on the optical design but also on the engineering/structural benefits. We really appreciate his knowledge and patience. Overall, we were very happy with his crew and the attention to detail that they showed. Pricing is very fair. We are planning on using DCB for future projects. read more

My husband and I had Dan's Custom rebuild our front and back brick porches, do some tuck pointing on our house, as well as pour a new cement slab and step for our front porch. The first slab and step they poured was not leveled correctly and caused water to pool on the slab. This work was done in April of 2018 and we contacted them to correct their mistake in April. They would not return calls or emails, and we finally got them to come out and redo the slab and step in September of 2018 after threatening to file a claim against them with BBB. They came out and redid the step and slab but this time made the step longer and slanted both towards our garden and brick porch. This work was done on September 7 and they still have not come out to remove the holds around the new slab and step and will not return our calls or emails again. I would not reccomend this company to anyone as they do not follow through on their promise of good work and their guarantee for the work. They do not communicate with their clients and so far when they make a mistake they will ignore you until you leave them alone. My husband and I are extremely disappointed with the whole process of them fixing a mistake they made, and in return of them "trying" to fix it have made it worse and left us with a huge clean up job read more

i have never left a negative review about a business until now. if i could give 0 stars i would. i contacted dan's to over-grout our fireplace in the fall. at that point i was 8 months pregnant and hoped to have the work done prior to the baby's arrival. dan came out to quote the job in november and seemed nice and reasonably priced. i showed him a picture of what we wanted and he said "oh yah a weeping joint style." since i am not in the custom brick business, i didn't know what that meant but figured since i showed him a photo that and he's in the business, he knew what i wanted. they contacted us in late december to complete the job but i had gone into labor and was in the hospital. after contacting them to follow up a few weeks later, they said "we're too busy now; early spring." they then called me late jan and said "we'll be there tomorrow to do your fireplace." when the crew arrived it was clear that dan had not clearly communicated with them - they used the wrong color grout, misrepresented how long the job would take to complete. the weeping joint grout they did was basically just grout oozing out of the bricks - not what we wanted or communicated. we told the crew same day and they said "there's nothing we can do it must have been a miscommunication." they agreed to scrape some grout off the fireplace but it still wasn't what we wanted. i called same day and spoke with deborah, who sent dan out to chat with us. he agreed to have the crew come back out to put mortar on top of the job they already did to give the effect that we initially desired. he said "it'll only take an hour." then no one ever followed up to schedule. after calling several times with no response (i think they even screened my calls and didn't answer) deborah said "dan's out of town now so you can talk to him when he gets back but you'll have to pay to have the job redone." i then got a disappointing email from dan himself insinuating i asked for the weeping joint grout style and was asking him to work for free. working with this company has been the most frustrating experience. there was no accountability for the terrible communication and i was blamed as the customer although the issue could have been prevented if the job wasn't quoted in the fall, finished in january, and dan's team had any idea what we actually wanted. as a result this is what our fireplace looks like. i asked dan to call me to discuss further but now no one will respond to me. I had my step and sidewalk replaced . They took out the old 90 degree shaped sidewalk and removed the old step. They replaced it with a beautiful designed brick paver walk and steps. They sloped it away from the foundation so the water would drain away from the house. They were very professional. The clean up was excellent. It greatly improved the curb appeal of my house.
