Dan's Rice Box is amazing! Best Chinese food in Groton. We got the crab rangoon, sesame balls, sunshine roll, beef lo mein, and General Tso's chicken. Everything was so good. The food was hot, crispy, and well seasoned. The sesame balls and crab rangoons were not soggy at all. The only thing I would skip is the sunshine roll as it was nothing really special. The service here is great and is family-owned. The ambiance could use some work as it's very quiet and uninviting, but I think this place is better for take out instead. Last week I went in to place an order and bring it home. The place was empty. I could hear someone working in the kitchen. No one came out. I yelled " hello" and still nobody came out. I waited a few more minutes and yelled again. The guy who was cooking came out but barely spoke English. Finally a young lady came out and took my order. I did order an eel roll . It was thrown together and very sloppy. The other food was good and I enjoyed it. Tonight I used door dash to have dinner delivered. The prices on the door dash app and what was charged were totally different.... at least by two dollars. I like their food but they lack severely in customer service service. ordered delivery. got soup that had noodles, bok choy & wontons. the noodles were springy and not overcooked, they had a bit of chew to them. the bok choy was fresh, and the wontons appeared homemade and had a tender thin wrapper -- not the thick doughy type you get from some restaurants that use foodservice wontons. i wish the broth had a bit more flavor, but for what i paid the quality & portion size was excellent. would return. read more

My wife and I stopped in here for a quick dinner. I had the stir-fried udon with pork, which was excellent, with juicy, tasty pieces of pork. She got the General Tso's Chicken combination, which tasted more like sesame chicken without the sesame seeds: the sauce was flavorful but had none of the spicy or sour notes that General Tso's should have. No table service? Cool, no problem; I can live with that, especially since there are signs clearly stating it. This *would* have been a solid 3-star review... ...except that they refused to give me a glass of water with my food and wanted to sell me bottled water instead. I stopped by the other day after walking the dogs at Bluff Pt State Park. I ran in bc I saw they had wonton noodle soup. I walked in & went up to the Counter. I was reviewing the menu trying to decide what to order. I told the young woman that I was going to sit down at a table while I looked at the menu. I also asked her for some hot tea. I sat down. About 10+ mins go by & she didn't come over. She never came over to take my order. I finally got up & I decided on the lemon chicken bc it was apparent that I wasn't getting table service. I also ordered an egg roll. I again asked for hot tea. She hesitated. I asked her if she had any hot water available thinking that might be the issue. She said she had some but again hesitated so I asked her if it cost extra to which SHE SAID YES which I said fine. She hesitated again. I finally capitulated & said "just forget it". So she wasn't willing to wait on me even though I expressly asked for tea & I had sat down to order. AND she wasn't willing to prepare me tea even though I requested it again. The whole ordeal was ridiculous. I honestly think she just couldn't be bothered to be hospitable which was ridiculous bc there was the place was empty. Anyway, the lemon chicken was basically a very heavily breaded & fried medium sized boneless chicken breast on a bed of iceberg lettuce. Literally nothing else. They included a small container of glutinous "lemon" corn starch glaze which had a faint hint of lemon to it. But not fresh lemon. No rice either. Overall, I wasn't really impressed with this place largely bc the young woman at the Counter was completely disinterested in offering even the basics of customer service. She didn't make ANY effort at all to wait on me nor prepare me tea. Additionally, the lemon chicken was fine but not great. It had no flavor & the "lemon" sauce (glaze) was flavorless. I ate 1/2 of the chicken & threw away the lemon glaze when I got home. I might try the win ton noddle soup to give it another try hopefully the food & svc will improve. Alternately, Phantasia in the strip mall across the street. They have amazing authentic Thai & very good Chinese food. I have been there 4 times over the past few months and the food is excellent. Great local spot for quick, easy, and yummy Chinese food! This is a cute, locally owned family restaurant. There are about 6 tables in restaurant which is surprisingly spacious. The area is clean and well maintained. They have a mounted flat screen playing cartoons. Certainly kid friendly environment. They offer some noodle soups as well (didn't realize that until now). Tonight I went for the beef noodle soup with udon noodles. Very good! Their crab rangoon's will always have a special place in my heart. Soooo good! This is my go to take out spot. Holy Crap!!!! Singapore Mi Fun (Spicy Curry) is awesome! I like, in general your typical Chinese / American joints. Most places are fairly consistent within margins of error of course. But this place was just a bit different. How? I thought you might ask. Well first they have a Crab Rangoon with jalapeno that is super fantastic. Their rice, fried and steamed are good. There Gen Tso Chicken was better than average. But.... The Singapore Mi Fun is way over the top. You need to order extra spicy though. They are happy to accommodate. This will clear up the head cold. It has good flavor, the noodles are really light. It comes with shrimp, chicken and beef all mixed in. I am sure if you want to go all vegi they could accommodate. The service was also top notch. I can not say enough. I think when in this area of Conn, this will be my go to place, just for that meal and service alone. read more

I mentioned in my online order that I have a selfish allergy, I don't usually mention it because it's fairly mild but sometimes when prepped on the same surfaces I may have a reaction. I ordered the general tsaos chicken, not knowing it has oyster sauce in it, and the woman made me an entirely new sauce with no oyster sauce that is similar to the original without me even asking! Food is tasty but spicy items are not spicy. If you don't want to use coupons and and don't mind cold food order delivery and use the third party website. I used to enjoy the delivery options because I used to be able to call in and get my food delivered hot. I used to be able to use coupons and not pay $6 for delivery. Never doing delivery again. We tried this Chinese restaurant for take out for the first time last night. The pork dumplings were THE BEST I've ever had. So much more flavor and filling than any other place I've tried. The pork spare ribs- YUM! Not too much fat and the flavor was so good! We both enjoyed our entree's so much. This will be our new go to take out! read more

Here's why: - The website ordering for pick-up or delivery is easy to use and even works great on my iPhone or iPad. - Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. - The food is light and healthy tasting, not loaded with grease. - The fried pork dumplings are crisp on the bottom and once again, not loaded with greasy oil. - The cream puffs are a great deal and perfect after meal treat (4 for $1 - how can you beat that!?!) - The chicken low main is my favorite - fresh veg and all white meat chicken. - The sweet and sour chicken is also a fav as they leave the sauce on the side to keep the perfectly puffed batter crisp around the chicken. We had the Rice Box deliver. I'm not sure about you but when you order chicken teriyaki it doesn't mean chicken jerky. The chicken teriyaki was VERY dry and over cooked on skewers with no sauce. If they added sauce it would have helped rather then thinking we were going to choke. In general, the meat was very dry, someone in our group ordered beef as well, same thing. One of the best Chinese places in the area! The BF and I would order from them weekly when we lived in Groton. We mainly order Sesame Chicken and General Tso with Crab Rangoon. The Jalapeno Rangoon are also really good. The Combo are a great deal $7 for the meat, fried rice and an egg roll. Give the place a try you won't be disappointed! The only reason I'll give the 1 star is for the food, it's pretty damn good. However, they gave us the wrong order, and my wife and I didn't realize until we got home. So she calls and returns the and picks up the new order, after arguing that we had a regular AND a spicy order of rangoons. So, she gets home and starts dishing up the food, and realizes they downgraded our size. Granted, she double checked it, but was so frazzled that she didn't realize. So, we go back and as I walk, not my wife, a lady walks out with her order, getsbin her car, and comes right back in with the food...wrong order. EDIT: I wrote this review while waiting for my order. My wife and I went to the CVS across the street, and when I came back, the guy said my wife had picked up the order...WHO WAS WITH ME THE WHOLE TIME. A great improvement and under new management. When I review a Chinese takeout or restaurant outside of Chinatown or Hawaii, I always order one thing. The Won Yon Noodle Soup or Won Ton Mein. It is a simple dish and it is in the simplicity of the dish that you find whether or not the rest of the menu will be good. Basically there are three elements to a good Won Ton Mein: 1. The dumplings, 2. The noodles and 3. The soup. The dumplings were the perfect size and the filling was very tasty with a hint of oyster sauce flavor. The noodles were the correct egg noodles and were on point with a good chewiness. The broth was not over salty as some can be. There was some bok choy and I would have added a little more with some green onions and a couple slices of char sui pork (that would have made it perfect). Looking at the menu I was surprised that they offered brown rice which is a very good thing. Many Chinese places don't overtly say they offer brown rice as a substitute. Over the past year Ricebox has become our go-to for local Chinese food. I'm a fan of their Black Pepper Chicken and Curry Chicken. My girlfriend likes their Mi Fun noodles. They have a bunch of tables inside and a nice fountain/mountain thing, but I've only gotten take-out. It does seem to be more of a take-out place than a stay and eat place. Everyone who works there is incredibly friendly and helpful. Their online ordering and even their decor and attitude give it a much more modern feel than many other Chinese restaurants. The quality has dropped significantly since I first ate here. The food is bland and greasy. Once, I placed an online order and when I called over an hour later, they hadn't even started making it. Today was the last straw, though. It had been a few months since I ordered anything, but I was craving noodles. I ordered Pad Thai, and it arrived quickly enough. Unfortunately, there was an unreasonably large piece of onion taking up a significant portion of the takeout container. It's like they don't care anymore. No peanuts either. Very impressed with Rice Box. I was told of this place by the owner relatives who own a place in Middletown, CT. So, i gave it a try. First, I like the look of the place. Spacious, clean and neat. The water feature is great (although not running lately). I like that the kitchen is not in view as well. Displays if their involvement in the community is nice to see. I have simple tastes in my takeout - Fried wontons, teriyaki chicken and pork fried rice. Love them all. The added bonus here is the online ordering. Pull up the menu on your PC or phone and have at it. It has worked great for me and my orders have always been ready on time. A great takeout place that I highly recommend. read more

I was in town for the day because of work, and needed a quick meal. I didn't expect anything too stellar, and even though I got chicken mi fun off the lunch menu [not standard lunch menu choice elsewhere], I thought it'd be bearable at the most because of the low price. I was wrong. The employees were polite and courteous on the phone, and brought my food to me promptly. The driver checked in with me ten minutes before, when he was on his way, and again when he arrived. Love that! The food itself was great. I don't like the typical greasy fare that most Chinese restaurants serve up, so this suited my palate perfectly. I was able to eat the whole portion and soup without feeling sick, even though it was quite a bit of food. I recommend Rice Box based on my experience with them! read more

It's been one of those 50/50 experiences here... So when we order for dinner, it can be pretty awesome, and when we order for lunch, it sucks like worst than a Nicki Minaj song. (is that how you spell her name? Whatever) My lunch experience - imagine you did something pretty awesome at work or school, and you're like "yeah, I'm gonna treat ma self!". So you order your favorite dish from the chinese take out... and when you sit down, still sooooo excited, and thinking it's gonna be pretty freaking awesome, and bite down... and oh dear God, what... what is happening... For the record, I order Generals Shrimp... and its like they burnt the fried coating on the shrimp... oh and to up the ante, they left the tails on, so with the burnt coating it was pretty much impossible to eat. I was so depressed. The rice and crab rangoons were the only thing that saved my celebratory lunch. Dinner experiences - again take out - usually we order white meat General's chicken, shrimp fried rice, and steak and peppers. I haven't been able to find a place that uses a decent amount of steak in their steak and peppers (for some unGodly reason, they use more peppers which yes its cheaper but no nobody wants to eat all that pepper, not even a vegetarian wants all that pepper), its still somewhat decent. The rice will always be a little blah but whatever, its rice. The eggrolls are okay, but I opt for the spring roll usually. And the jalapeno crab rangoons are such an amazing invention.. if only they were consistently good every time! (sometimes, I get zero jalapeno in a rangoon and the world is a sadder place). Overall, its okay, but we're thinking of trying to branch out soon so we can go back to having stellar chinese food. read more

We went to visit some friends over the weekend and decided to stop by a chinese restaurant to get some food. We were so glad we went to this restaurant called The Rice Box. The staff are friendly and recommended to us some of their favorites. Yes!! Their crab Ragoon is by far the the best from all the chinese restaurants that I have tried. If you like it a little spicy like I do, it does have a little kick to it since they add some Jalapeno. Mongolian Beef and Singapore Mi Fun were also very De-licious!! It's ok, unfortunately there are no good Chinese restaurants in Groton. You might hit a good meal but they are very inconsistent. The next time it will be lousy. Really miss Rainforest at Mohegan Sun. Rice Box is just ok. Egg rolls good, steamed dumplings thick and doughy, sauce watery. Combination plates ok. But nothing stands out as good. If someone would open a good Chinese restaurant in Groton, they would make a FOUTUNE! Because there is not a good ONE! read more
