This is my third trip in with my elderly parents in the past month. I wanted to write a review because I have been told that this place is average. Friendly family environment. That has not been our experience at all. Great selection and the portions are very generous. Both dinner and breakfast have been cooked exactly to order and were delicious. Good customer service. Single bathroom and it's pretty tight in here. There's two parts of the place one part is tight with bad lighting. One part is solid. But it was clean overall. Great texture food just poorly seasoned I am I mixed white and African American and I had to use half the salt and pepper to this food. read more

Small little diner but good food and reasonably priced. I had the jalapeño burger which was very good and had a lot of jalapeños and the sweet potato fries were also good. Only negative is someone in party asked a couple of fairly basic questions on one of the dishes and the server couldn't answer them. She asked another server who also didn't know. She seemed put off by the question to begin with so we didn't push, but a question of the cook would have seemed the easiest answer but she didn't do that and we didn't push any further and ordered something else. I've passed by this restaurant many times but never stopped in to eat. I was in town a bit early and had time to stop for breakfast before my appointment. I very much prefer family-owned restaurants rather than chain restaurants. They had a nice breakfast menu so I ordered my usual traditional breakfast of eggs, meat, potatoes, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was good except the biscuits and gravy. I was only able to get a couple of bites in before setting them aside. The gravy tasted like it came from a dry mix - flavorless. The prices were very reasonable and the service was fine. I'll definitely be back but will opt for a waffle or pancakes instead of the biscuits and gravy if I'm hungry enough. read more

Ordered 2 fish dinners to go, only traveling 6 blocks to eat at home. I'll start with the fact. They never took a name and got confused at pick up time because somebody else ordered very similar items so pick up took a few minutes more than expected Other person ordered whole catfish and said it was delicious but they forgot one of her side dishes. I ordered the walleye and it was nasty! Soggy and greasy and the fries I ordered as a side dish were the same, limp and soggy. Took a few bites of both and couldn't stomach it. I ordered extra tartar sauce and was charged 95 cents per tiny cup! It got a 3 vs 1 because my friend said the catfish was so good. read more

BEWARE! The price on their menu is not what they charge. I ordered Steak Fajitas with a menu price of 10.25. The same menu, with prices, is listed on their website. No complaints until the bill came, upon which I was charged over $20 for the fajitas. Their explanation was that their menus needed to be reprinted. They explained there was a sign posted about that next to the 'specials' board. The sign about the menus mentioned reprinting but not that the menu prices were totally incorrect. The waitress never mentioned that the price would be double what was on the menu. I've never seen the like! I could see if it was a dollar or two off but DOUBLE the price without being told about it? Ridiculous! The service was fine, the food was ok, but their slight of hand on the bill ruined the experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Was shown great service in here. Dont remember the womans name but she easily waited on the entire restaurant probably 10 + tables, was a cashier, had a smile and engaged in pleasant banter with most folks. Really ribbed the locals which she obviously knew well, pointed out the breakfast buffet and never showed any signs of stress. This was on two occassions. Damn good waitress! I enjoyed the breakfast buffet. Eggs, French toast, hash were all good, biscuits n gravy were fair, crepes were good. All in all a pretty decent place especially for the price! Prices are good here. The staff was very friendly and the food was good. We were a party of six eating lunch on a Saturday and we didn't wait very long for food. The waitress brought us plenty of refills as needed and extra plates. I'm pretty sure the waitress didn't even charge us for extra fries for our twin boys. It's very much a family restaurant. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the place needs a remodel. At a bare minimum paint the walls, get new high chairs, clean the ceiling vents, and get new ceiling tiles. I enjoy checking out local restaurants. Sometimes I find gems other times the places are just meh or subpar. This time I found a place that was just meh. The interior looks a little run down. It's possible at one time the location was home to a chain restaurant. But I don't judge a book by its cover. I ordered cheese balls as an appetizer. They were most breading. The little cheese inside was dried out. The ranch wasn't very good. I had a hamburger horseshoe as my main course. I do judge a place by the quality of their horseshoes. I was not impressed. The cheese tasted like it came straight out of a can because canned cheese always has a weird taste to it. The fries were like some odd middle point between regular and seasoned fries. The hamburger was definitely the frozen patties you can get at a grocery store. The bread was low quality too. If the service was horrible then my rating would be lower but it wasn't. Don't do it. Instead, drive a few minutes to the Historical Downtown District and try some of the following places. About the same price, but much, much better! 1) Guzzardo's Italian Villa (Steaks, Pasta, Seafood, and more!) about the same price but fresh cut steaks. Open for dinner only. Homemade pastas. Its been a Lincoln treasure for over 50 years! 2) Blue Dog Inn is a great place for burgers, sandwiches and other homemade goods. 3) Arcade Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Quaint little place. 4) Hallie's Lunch Box is open for lunch and dinner and is home to the schnitzel sandwich. A Lincoln delicacy. read more

Probably a little generous star-wise. I was heading home to Chicago and decided to stop by a local place in a rural town. Went a ways from the highway and it was the first place I saw. It was Mother's Day a little after 12 noon. Given the day and the fact that it seemed as if a few churches had let out, it was pretty busy. When I walked in, I could see there was a buffet that appeared to be pretty substantial, but I was really looking for a traditional breakfast. Waited a bit, then one of the waitstaff directed me to sit in a side room. Only a couple of tables occupied in this 8 booth room, but that changed quickly. A large family came in and occupied three more booths, at one of them, they put six kids at a booth for four. Loved it - it was the local flavor that I was hoping to experience at the restaurant as much if not more so that the flavor of the food itself. Time to order - I spot a chicken fried steak with sausage gravy, so that's a must. There's corned beef hash too - that can always be a variable; canned cooked OK, canned cooked badly, homemade - pretty awesome or homemade - bunch o'junk. This turned out to be canned cooked OK so I was fine with that. The chicken fried steak was decent - sauce was pretty good, I've had better meat before, though this by no means was bad - just average. One thing I really enjoyed was that the pepper was mostly black pepper and the shaker had pretty huge holes in it. Yum. The guy that waited on me did well. My food came out within a reasonable time, especially given how busy the place was. He got my order right and was doing a pile of other tasks as well. While the food could have been a tad better (was good, but not great), everything else was just right. read more

GREAT SOUP!!!!! Outstanding deserts. Excellent salad bar. Like most places they do better on some things than others. Wife loves their Greek Salad. Their burgers are great. Avoid the horseshoe. Everything else I have had there is good. Service is always friendly and prompt. read more

One star? Damn, folks are tough on the mom and pop joint. I led the motorcycle club on ride night and we stopped here on a Tuesday night for dinner. If memory serves many of us ordered the special of the night which was country fried steak, gravy and all the fixings. I enjoyed my meal. It tasted fine and the service was great too. read more

Heading through Lincoln Illinois, my husband mentioned Daphnes as a good place years back. The restaurant was neat, orderly and clean. I ordered a gyros. It was better then what I expected. I should have eaten an entrée that i knew was good from past visits. My broccoli cheese soup was very very good and i remembered their fries were nice and crunchy and never greasy but confused on the sandwich to get. The menu is quite large here. I asked the waitress what was better the burgers or the ribeye sandwich. She said the burgers are good, just typical pub burgers but the people rave about the steak sandwich. So i ordered my steak sandwich medium rare and it come to the table mainly well done. The steak was smaller than i thought it would be for $6.75 and thinner than expected. It was just a bad piece of meat but maybe would have been better if not over cooked and dry. I found out the owner was the cook tonight which surprised me about the preparation of the steak. I should have said something but i didnt find out he was the cook until i paid at the register. The hamburger horseshoe had two patties covered with the crunchy fries and the cheese sauce was delicious. Service was great but the 3 stars comes from my sad sandwich and the booths. The place just needs remodeled or atleast a little bit of money put into it. I can say the portions are large. It can easily be a 4 star average restaurant with just a small amount of work. read more

I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Daphne's is my favorite place to eat when I go to Lincoln. Here in Baton Rouge we have the best of everything to eat except ,down home food in an unpretentious atmosphere. It is what it is. read more

Well I had a wonderful review of how horrible our experience was at this place and it went poof and disappeared. I didn't even want to give this place one star, it was that bad. They even screwed up scrambled eggs and spaghetti, how does that even happen. Bottom line DO NOT EVER eat here. The food will haunt you, pretty sure they cook with colon cleanse. When you send your full plates back and tell them how horrible it was they smile and take your $36 regardless. Wait staff on the ball , a cook that knows what an over medium egg is ," let me tell you that is increasingly rare", good coffee and the homemade hash browns were also a rare treat, you will never receive this kind of quality or service from a chain, and the waiter gave my exact order to the cook , unlike a certain canine like place in Lincoln, you know quality in food and service mean much more to me than history and atmosphere, the sense of these fades very quickly when I am served undercooked food, Daphne's staff took the time to do it right, I won't forget about that when I go out to spend my hard earned money. read more
