Hey folks, this review is long overdue. I've been training in BJJ for over 6 years and have been at JG Academy for about 9 months now. After I moved to Livermore, JG Academy was the first and only BJJ spot that I checked out despite folks at JG encouraging me to try out other locations before making a decision. I have really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to others. The coaches are kind, excellent instructors, and are active competitors in the area. The folks you train with here are also very welcoming and are great training partners to have. This gym isn't very traditional and we leave our ego at the door so don't be afraid to come check this spot out, even if it's your first time training in BJJ. read more

Excellent place to train and learn jiu jitsu. I've been a member here for 7 months and have high remarks to share about: 1) the quality and consistency of the instruction and training room, 2) the positive culture carried by the members, and 3) the cleanliness and tidiness of the facility. Quality/Consistency - The coaches/instructors here lean into modern teaching philosophies and have an emphasis on specific training and live sparring. Every session is a great workout that has you focusing on skill development with movements and situations that will contribute to your jiu jitsu game. Culture - The members here genuinely care about each other and only focus on getting themselves and each other better at Jiu Jitsu. Outside of this, there is a strong affinity for keeping each other safe and having fun overall. There isn't a pressure to compete, but we do have regular competitors in the gym -- it's been fun to see people test/challenge themselves. Facility - The gym is cleaned meticulously including the mats which are disinfected after every session. The bathrooms are clean (and smell nice) which also have a shower if you need it. It's conveniently located with ample parking. Lastly, and most importantly, there was never any pressure to join as I was looking for a new gym. The staff highly encourage you to see what else is out there and ultimately decide what is best for you. I can't recommend Aspire to Inspire Livermore (JG Academy) highly enough. I've been training here for about 5 months now as a complete newbie. The coaches have made it super easy to pickup and they break down moves step by step and are there to guide you along the way. You can tell they really care about their craft and are proud to teach it. The other students are more than willing to help also and I have never seen a culture as positive and respectful as the crew at Jg. Their 6am class is perfect for the busy parent looking to carve out some time for themselves in morning before getting the kids to school. read more

My daughter started Brazilian jiu jitsu a a year ago at 7 and every day she looks forward to coming to class. Fast forward 4 months after her start date and my husband signs up and makes time at least once a week when his schedule permits (they have 6am classes MWF). Now, a year later, me- mom who never thought she'd be comfortable being in close proximity to people unrelated, she'd be able to keep up in a combat sport, a germaphobe, is loving this sport. Coach AJ and Coach Monica have created an academy that embraces a culture of fun, learning, and growth. Everyone here, from the kids to adults, white to black belts, young and old(er) are here to learn and (my favorite part) inspire others to learn. There's no ego here which is what I was probably most afraid of when my husband and I got involved. We're so glad to be here and to have this genuine enjoyment of this sport. My friend Kevin has been raving about JG in Tracy for a while now. So when I moved back to Livermore a few months ago and he told me they had one here in Livermore, I decided it was time to sign up my 9 y/old and check it out. And I'm so glad I did!! They loved it right away. Monica and AJ have great attention to detail when teaching techniques and a calm and positive attitude that commands respect but is also fun. Phoenix really looks forward to going and I love that we can come four days a week for super consistent training. Looking forward to continuing to watch them learn and grow... and even planning on trying some classes for myself this summer! read more

I am a middle aged adult, who used to be very overweight and inactive. Thanks to this place and the community it has fostered, I have become more fit, confident and excited about being healthy. I have been attending this academy for a little over a year and after traveling to many other gyms around the country I can say this is an exceptional place to train. I used to train at another gym in Livermore (for about 2 years prior), and one day decided to attend the JG/Aspire to Inspire Saturday open mat. I was floored by the level of skill demonstrated by students at my same belt level (white), and immediately decided to switch gyms. In my time training, I have discovered some things that really make this place special: 1) They do not push long term contracts on you. 2) The environment is safe, respectful and inclusive. 3) There is an equal balance of Gi and No-GI classes weekly! 4) Bring your own Gi/No-Gi uniform, or buy from them. Your choice. 5) Training has emphasis on warmups with intent, progressive technique and generally longer rolling sessions (6-7 mins/round). 6) The owners (AJ and Monica) are very family oriented. All of their kids are enrolled in classes and they encourage you to bring yours in as well. They have also been very flexible to support my special needs son's developing interest in the sport. 7) Training environment includes people of all shapes, sizes, colors and ages, but they wont take just anyone with a credit card. The people who are encouraged to come back after the intro class are positive, love jiu jitsu and are genuinely good people to be around. 8) Competing is not required, but is highly encouraged and the community trains hard to build eachother up. Classes are usually amended to support those competing (shark tanks, longer rolls, tips and tricks, etc), and it ends up helping everyone get better. Jg Livermore is an excellent gym I have been training here for 2 years and the culture and instruction is amazing. One of the things that make a gym great is its culture, everyone here is treated like family. There are no egos and everyone is striving to get themselves and each other better. Classes are always fun and safe. The instruction is top notch, instructors at JG Livermore have years of jiu Jitsu experience. Whether you are trying to compete or just want to train and have fun, the instructors and fellow student are ready and willing to help you along the way in your journey. There is a great mix of higher and lower belts in every class, classes focus modern techniques and teaching strategies, from situational drilling to live sparring. JG Livermore offers morning and night classes as well as children's classes, Mats are always cleaned after each session. Spacious parking and plenty of seating for parents to watch their children train. I'm glad to be apart of this gym and encourage everyone to check it out! read more

My 4yo son has been training here for 7 months now, and we couldn't be happier with the experience. The coaches are so good with him. They're so patient, encouraging, and and they make the classes fun too! My son has made so much progress in his coordination and technique, and truly enjoys training. The space is really nice, and it has a lot of seating inside for parents to sit and watch, which is nice. The best part of this academy is the sense of family you feel here. Coach AJ & Coach Monica are truly amazing leaders and run an amazing gym. My kids are in the 4-7 class and they genuinely take the time to really work with the kids, teach the fundamentals, and instill great morals. We look forward to practice everyday! Our 10 yr old daughter has been attending the youth class for 6 months now and absolutely loves it. What we thought would be a 1-2 day/week hobby quickly became a 4-5 days/week passion. We're very pleased with the quality of coaching, and the skills and expectations learned on the mat carry over to home and school. We've seen improvement on school grades, a drive to get homework finished (so she can attend Jiu Jitsu class, and better behavior. If you're looking for a family-oriented jiu-jitsu membership that promotes self-confidence and is not expensive, Aspire to inspire is your place to go. What we and our daughter (11 yo) like the most, you don't have to sign a 3 or 6 month contract. Your child can train at least 4 times a week with additional open matt every Saturday. The facility is clean and open. Most importantly is that our daughter really enjoys to train at JG. The coaches AJ and Monica created a disciplined but a very kids friendly atmosphere. read more

Outstanding dojo! Not only do you get amazing Jiu Jitsu coaches but you also get an amazing facility that is clean, spacious and has bathrooms with showers. My husband and I were struggling to find a sport that our kids would be excited about. We tried soccer, swimming, basketball, dance and nothing but JG Academy changed that. We love this academy! My 7 year old son started going about 7 months ago and then my 10 year daughter started attending shortly afterwards. They both absolutely love it. The coaches are very knowledgeable and are very strict, but kind with the kids. The facility is very clean and their is lots of room for parents to watch. Amazing facilities and coaches at JG Academy! The gym has plenty of space, 2 bathrooms (with showers), and a changing room. The entrance and parking lot can be found on 2nd street. JG Academy has a few other facilities that have historically been filled with amazing coaches and I have no doubt JG Academy Livermore will deliver the same. Coach AJ taught at the Manteca gym and recently opened up a Livermore gym. He taught a lot of the kids classes and helped them get tournament ready! Friendly and welcoming atmosphere, great technical knowledge, nice facility. I dropped in as a visiting white belt, and everyone seemed excited to have me there. JG Academy Livermore has been such a great experience for me and my friends! It is such a clean and safe environment for adults and children. I have been in the martial arts community for a long time and I would recommend this gym to everyone. The owners are so nice, kind, and AJ is an amazing instructor. I love that they have competing black belts from all over the world come in and teach new moves. I also love the curriculum isn't random but taught in ways to help you learn and build on to previous positions.
