Youngest kid's class closing out for the day.
Beverly R.

My daughter started Brazilian jiu jitsu a a year ago at 7 and every day she looks forward to coming to class. Fast forward 4 months after her start date and my husband signs up and makes time at least once a week when his schedule permits (they have 6am classes MWF). Now, a year later, me- mom who never thought she'd be comfortable being in close proximity to people unrelated, she'd be able to keep up in a combat sport, a germaphobe, is loving this sport. Coach AJ and Coach Monica have created an academy that embraces a culture of fun, learning, and growth. Everyone here, from the kids to adults, white to black belts, young and old(er) are here to learn and (my favorite part) inspire others to learn. There's no ego here which is what I was probably most afraid of when my husband and I got involved. We're so glad to be here and to have this genuine enjoyment of this sport. Oh, and if you're a germaphobe, this place is meticulously cleaned.

Came for a trial and they were very welcoming. Still weighing my options but this is a great choice if you're in Livermore.

I'm so glad I found Charles Gracie Academy. We moved to Livermore in August of 2024, and I signed…read moremy daughter up for Jiu-Jitsu classes shortly after. When I learned they had family plans, I signed myself up as well. What I was expecting when I enrolled my daughter was just an extracurricular activity to fulfill her need to move (and because she wanted to be like the Ninja Turtles). But what we've gotten back has been so much more. I've lost three pants sizes, for starters!! And I've also gained improved self-esteem, better focus, confidence in defending myself in shifty situations, a shared activity my daughter and I can practice at home together, and a passion I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The list goes on and on -- but most of all, it's the camaraderie. In so many ways, I feel like I found my second home when I started training. Everyone is so friendly and patient as I learn, and I've met some truly awesome new friends. The coaches are all passionate about their craft, and that really sets them apart from other Jiu-Jitsu gyms. I know because I've tried other academies before, and Charles Gracie is unmatched in the level of care their coaches give to each student. They know their students by name and take the time to check in with how they're doing. They make sure no one falls through the cracks and that everyone understands the techniques. Last of all -- this place is super CLEAN!!! Every day after class, we see the coaches cleaning the mats, floors, toilets, locker rooms, and doors. It's such a relief not to worry about catching anything nasty. The other academies I tried were honestly grotesque -- grime in places that's hard to ignore -- it made me cringe. Honestly though, come check it out and see for yourself.

The classes are so full you have to get there early to see at all, and even then it's obstructed views and a long distance over the mats. You have to stand in the front of the stuido, I was asked to leave from the back window. I'd really like to see them offer the inside viewing again. My kids like jiujitsu training, and it sucks that this one aspect absolutely ruins the experience for the parents. I've seen jiujitsu have a sense of community and this place ain't it.

This review is for the adult BJJ Fundamentals class, and the youth BJJ class. Ares BJJ is located…read morewithin the Arena Training Center. Fabiano was warm and welcoming responding to my e-mails and giving a tour of the facility. My past martial arts experience has been 3 years in Tae Kwon Do and 2 years in Judo as a youth practitioner, followed by 2 years of high school wrestling, and 2 years boxing as an adult. I typically refrain from reviewing a trial class, but what stood out from the class was how the instruction was provided. I had Professor Aluizio and Elisabeth (both very well decorated competitors as I have found) teaching the class. Techniques were shown clearly and concisely, yet small details to make a technique work is also shown. There was a good mix of experienced guys (above blue belt) working with white belts that you get small pointers and controlled application of techniques. The instructors were frequently around to correct and observe. I had my son in the youth class a week later w/ Elisabeth. Having already been in Judo, he picked up all the additional drills pretty quickly. Class was divided pretty well from warm up, ground mobility/rolls, and break falls. One technique was shown and then practiced/drilled. There was actual sparring/rolling/randori at the end of class, which was well supervised with Elisabeth and Aluizio watching the matches closely. I would like to update the review if/when I or my kids get the chance to do regular classes in the future.

Great instructors that compete internationally and a wonderful group of people to train with. The mat space is big and well maintained. The kids classes are excellent and my son enjoys the instruction. There is a nice mix of young and old students (16-50), with both athletic competition focused partners and people like me who are in it for the challenge, fitness, and self defense. The fees are very reasonable for the area, especially considering that one fee covers Both the BJJ instruction and any other classes you might want to take from arena (boxing, Muay Thai, etc.).

Notice how my stars are increasing with time!…read more I realized that behind all the chaos there is science! :) First of all, the kids do not get promoted at every opportunity! The dojo has set things to get to the next belt! Know them quickly and you get promoted quickly. Know them slowly and it takes you longer. Your choice, your time, your belt. Second, Patricia though always looks out of focus, but she is really focused on the important things. I am amazed how she knows how to organize the tournaments and the training and the routines for the kids. She incorporates fun in everything she does. Her ideology is that if the kids are not having fun, they will not continue. If they do not continue, how are they going to be confident youth and adults? She is right about that. She talks to the kids like they were her own and she really is concerned or happy when necessary. Wonderful atmosphere for kids to grow in. Like I said in earlier reviews, it is a family place! She treats the parents like her family and she involves them all the way. She will ask about your sick grandmother, as well as the new little of puppies your dog just had. She will always give you positive aspects of your child. And the great thing is, you will be invited to attend family events, such as the Dojo's honoring party. It is so relaxed and friendly, you forget that they are a Judo studio. (while waiting for the kids outside of the class area). I have recently moved to Pleasanton and it takes me about 30 minutes to get to the Studio for my daughter's class. I think that it is worth it!

I took my first handgun skill builder course with Josh, Mike and Steven this past weekend. They were all extremely friendly and did an absolutely awesome job instructing the class. The top priority is always safety with LDC and it definitely does not go unnoticed. I truly appreciate the way that they communicated with everyone; information is very streamlined and truly a great transfer of knowledge. I will continue to take classes with LDC and recommend them to all of my friends and family! Everything from start to finish was nothing short of amazing. The 8 hours of classroom time was extremely informative with real world situations which made it relatable and fun. The information was all clearly explained which made it extremely easy to digest. I feel truly thankful for all of the assistance/coaching that I received from the entire LDC team. We had the luxury of working with Joe, Archie, Mike and Roman; they were an absolute class act all around. The time on range was extremely safe and an absolute blast. In my opinion, they truly showed how passionate they were about their craft which pushed me to improve every step of the way. They have an absolute abundance of experience and knowledge, these are the people you need to be training with! Everyone should sign up for classes through LDC a few times a year. I personally am looking forward to improving more by taking their 4 hour skill builder classes. I don't plan on training with anyone else; I have already recommended them to a handful of my friends. Hats off to everyone involved with LEO Defensive Concepts!

However, I was quickly put at ease - by the instructors, but also the class. During tactical time, the instructors were watchful in the best way, ensuring that was was operating safely, and giving me 1:1 instruction to help my form. I think everyone - but especially women - would benefit from taking a course here! I plan to come back for a Skill-Builder course so I can build on the foundation they gave me.
