I have been a client of Darien Animal Clinic for many years and have always appreciated the care provided by the doctors and staff. However, over the past year, I have had several concerns regarding my experiences with the clinic. These concerns include vaccines or procedures that appeared to be unnecessary, medication charges that seemed higher than expected, and several interactions with staff that felt unprofessional or unfriendly, including comments made during phone conversations. I also noticed information on the clinic's website that appears to be inaccurate. Additionally, the fact that only one doctor remains in the practice is concerning. I rescued a 9 year old Beagle and and the owner I received him from brought her dog to this practice. I stayed with the practice figuring it was an office familiar to my dog and I live in the neighborhood. Please stay away from this practice! My dog saw Dr. Gustafson. Post blood work at one of his visits he told me to start giving my dog Denamarin a liver health supplement. I asked him at a recent visit how his liver count was and he said good he's fine the numbers are going down. He never told me there was any problem going on and said that there was nothing to be concerned about. Fortunately, my dog was brought in because he had a growth on his eye and I saw Dr Atkinson. She spoke of possibly removing this growth and the need for blood work prior and I asked her if she could look at his most recent blood work. When she looked at it I told her he had an issue with his liver count and Dr Gustafson said it was fine and I asked her what the numbers were and the numbers that were supposed to be between 300 and 500 were 1800! I was never notified by Dr Gustafson of these high numbers. She immediately recommended testing for him and x-rays and we found out that our dog has Cushing's disease that could have been treated two years prior. I had all of my records transferred to myself and my new vet and was shocked to see that those counts were as high as 2,400. After researching those numbers many articles say that a dog needs to seek medical care immediately when the numbers are over 1,000. The final straw was after being put on medication a test was scheduled to test the count to see if the meds need to be adjusted. This was not done in the proper time frame so it was useless and not accurate. He was given his medicine 9 hours prior to the test and it should have been done at most 4 to 6 hours after taking it. My dog was now a patient of Dr Atkinson and when I brought the dog and Dr Gustafson did the test. The topper was I told the front desk girl that Dr. Atkinson said that she wanted him to take his 12:00 medication and to test the blood at 2:00 and the girl went and told Dr Gustafson what I had said and I could hear her conversation and he said it will be fine. After going home I researched this information and found out that 9 hours was way too long for the test I called back and wanted Dr Atkinson the call me back because she was in that afternoon and instead I received a call from Dr Gustafson who told me that he called the lab and the dog could stay on the same amount of medication for 3 months and I knew the results were not supposed to be back for 3 to 4 days and I knew the test was done improperly. I spoke of my concern with the results being inaccurate when I left a message to be called back. So the doctor risked my dog being on the wrong amount of medication and he was going to let him take that for 3 months! I also spent over $500 on the test. I transferred my dog out of the practice and the new practice that I am going to was very surprised and apologetic for the previous vet and their lack of care. I asked to speak to the manager at Darien Animal Clinic who was completely incompetent and said." I am not a veterinarian and exactly what do you want?"This is after I went over the numbers with the results of my dog's previous blood tests and how I was not notified and I'm not sure the outcome of my dog's health considering he is now 13 years old and this has been going on for 2 years untreated. And the topper is my poor dog had to go through the same test a week later. I was so upset with this that I had to get off the phone. I never received a call with my dogs results and I never received a call from any veterinarian at the practice and was told Dr Atkinson left the practice. I'm sure she left because of the practices incompetence. Please do not take your pets here it may be too late for my dog and after looking at other reviews this has happened before and God only knows how many more times it has happened where people were unaware of the lack of care. I am writing this just to potentially help other animals and inform pet owners of my unfortunate experience. Hopefully this practice looks into this doctor's lack of proper care and treatment of animals at this clinic. I feel that a Veterinarian has a societal obligation to serve in an animal's best interest and I sincerely hope that the practice looks into this. read more

My father's cat was a patient at Darien Animal Clinic. When he passed away, we took in his cat and brought her to a new vet in another state. Our new veterinarian attempted to reach out to Darien Animal Clinic multiple times with questions regarding her medical history and care but never received a response. Additionally, we discovered that our cat had been prescribed an unusually high dose of prednisolone (25.5 mg per day) for such a small cat. Three other veterinarians independently confirmed that this dosage was much, much higher than what is typically recommended for a cat of her size (2.5 mg per day). High doses of steroids like prednisolone are known to cause kidney damage in cats, and, unfortunately, our cat now suffers from irreversible kidney disease. We were told she doesn't have much time left as a result of this damage. While I cannot say for certain if the high dosage was the sole cause of her condition, I am deeply disappointed with the clinic's lack of communication and questionable prescription practices. The unwillingness to coordinate with our new vet to ensure continuity of care is incomprehensible, and the staff was notably unfriendly during our interactions. While others may have had positive experiences with Darien Animal Clinic, ours was anything but, and I cannot in good faith recommend them to anyone. read more

Very, very rude service! I called this morning (12/1/2022) and a woman answered, and I requested-inquired to make a vet appointment... The following is a summary of how the convo went: -What's your pets name? -He has never been there before, I just moved to the area... -You have to go online to our website and fill out a new client paperwork (whatever else she was non-enthusiastically mumbling...) -No, this is a time sensitive matter I don't have time to to all that. -Her: we're not a clinic, then she hung up the phone on me (while I was in the process of trying to ask for recommendations, she just spoke over me and hung up the phone...) I called another vet, in the same area, and they took me today, and were very, very pleasant and polite. Darien Animal CLinic: A) lost my business, and B) any positive info or recco's from me. Recommendation to the owner/manager: train your staff on how to be more pleasant and helpful. Whomever I spoke with was clearly not interested. I want to give an update to my previous review of Darien Animal Clinic. After I wrote my last review I was contacted by Steve, the office manager, about my concerns and disappointment. Steve was very apologetic and was sorry about what happened. All my concerns were handled in a very professional manner, and I am satisfied with the outcome. Then yesterday I received an email from Dr. Morris, the best vet ever. It was so encouraging to hear directly from him. I am happy to hear that when my dog needs veterinary care I can see him again. Darien Animal Clinic continues to be one of the most ethical and consistent businesses i have ever seen. And to say "business" almost feels like an insult --- they treat you and your pets like family. Down to the staff not batting an eye at my cat having three human escorts to his appts, not only the doctors but also the tech's/assistants remembering that my cat only has one kidney, the type of food my cat eats, all the way to remembering how my cat likes to be swaddled when going in the back for a blood draw. They truly care about your animal companion and not the bottom line. They are always honest about benefits and costs (not just to your wallet but to your furry baby as well) of tests, treatments, etc and i feel that they truly understand what it means to be in charge of their little bodies and hugely important lives. We have also enjoyed getting to know the newest doctor to the practice --- Dr. A --- she has proven to have the attitude and style of practice that we have come to love in Darien Animal Clinic. Miss puppy face got hit by a car. The vet was compassionate and tender; she checked our little rascal thoroughly and carefully. I certainly appreciated that. Although Darien animal clinic had a lovely vet and was in general fairly clean, I certainly didn't understand the rude receptionist who didn't greet us or even acknowledge our existence when we went to pay. Just moved into the area. Rabies and usual yearly injections $300 plus here. Brought my dog in due to some strange behaviors. Blood, urine tests, x rays (?) and examination cost of $480 with no diagnosis. Do NOT take your animals to Darien Animal Clinic (Darien, IL). After taking one of our cats in to be spayed, she contracted pink eye. After her surgery, the other cat became sick (he has a heart murmur and is less resistant to infections). $500 later, they are telling us he has bordatella (kennel cough), herpes and another bacterial infection that comes from kennels. When confronted that this likely came from their office, they told us that their office is clean and we should bring the second cat in for yet another panel of tests. Needless to say, we will be taking our animals elsewhere. read more

I only gave this awful dump of a clinic 1 star because you can't give it 0 starts. Anyways, for the love of God, I beg you to please NEVER EVER take you pet to this clinic if you value him/her and love him/her at all. My beautiful dog was misdiagnosed by one of their incompetent, incredibly negligent vet's. She didn't bother to draw his blood or even palpate him properly. What a joke of a vet. As a result, his treatment was delayed 4 weeks. We took him to Burr Ridge, where he was correctly diagnosed, but it was too late. He passed away a week later. I really wanted to include the vet's name and more details, but I'm not sure if that is allowed by yelp. Other notes: The staff is incredibly rude and has no familiarity with the word "compassion." I honestly think in order to be hired as a staff member, you must be rude, incompetent, and lack any empathy at all. Oh and the parking is absolutely horrible. It seems specifically designed to ruin your day and make you waste 20+ minutes trying to get in and out of there without smashing into another car or any of the trees. Everyone here is so friendly, and so helpful. I am so glad that I was referred here by a friend as I have recently adopted a pitbull in which comes off aggressive due to his anxiety and fear of humans that stems from his past prior to adopting him. I have taken him to one other vet as well as an emergency vet since having him. Despite me putting a muzzle on him-other vets seem terrified of my dog. Dr. Adkesson at Darien Animal Clinic handled him amazing. Due to Covid, she had to meet him and take him inside without me being able to go in with my dog. She told me he rubbed his body on her leg, which is a HUGE deal, as my dog only does this to people he is comfortable with. It is his way of looking for comfort from humans. She even was comfortable enough to take his muzzle off of him for me after his appointment. I have never in my life seen my dog so comfortable with a stranger-nor met someone who was able to understand my dog from the moment they met him. The moment I left his appointment, I had to brag to my friend about her and how she handled my pitbull. She seriously "wowed" me with how she treated my dog and understood him. Not only did she listen to all my concerns to help my dogs needs, but she handled him with the care he deserves. It's easy to stereotype pitbull s and I will forever be grateful for how she treated my fur baby and will continue to return here as our primary vet. read more

Why can I not put zero stars? They don't deserve any stars...I took my 2 year 7 month old Yorkshire terrier in for a normal check up. They told me small dogs don't have a lot a saliva to clean their teeth. So he needed as dental cleaning and he had to be put out. I prepaid more than $500 for this. Made an appointment and brought him back. After leaving him for 15 minutes, they called me and said "he will not wake up" I went immediately and picked him up. The lady said to me..this happens. She never said she was sorry. I took him for an autopsy and found that he was overdosed. They killed my dog. Never offered any refund or anything. After talking to a neighbor, I found out that I am not the only one. This clinic should be shut down. read more

Took our 12 yr old Min-Pin after she pinched a nerve in her neck. Clearly the little one was in a lot of discomfort. Initial visit went fine, Ana was given the proper meds and we paid what we thought was a fair price at $190. The wording on the bill was confusing leading us to think there would be no charge for a follow-up visit. Wrong. Follow up visit included more meds, a lab test & a nail trim for another $162. Dr was very nice as were the techs, receptionist was rather cold but the prices were a little steep. 2 stars are plenty. read more

I brought my dog in and saw Dr. Morris, the owner, and he was very disrespectful to his vet tech. I told him that I thought he was rude to his staff and he said "Oh she likes it that way". I had a very bad feeling when I was there and I believed that Dr Morris is not treating his employees well.
