And to say "business" almost feels like an insult --- they treat you and your pets like family. Down to the staff not batting an eye at my cat having three human escorts to his appts, not only the doctors but also the tech's/assistants remembering that my cat only has one kidney, the type of food my cat eats, all the way to remembering how my cat likes to be swaddled when going in the back for a blood draw. They truly care about your animal companion and not the bottom line. They are always honest about benefits and costs (not just to your wallet but to your furry baby as well) of tests, treatments, etc and i feel that they truly understand what it means to be in charge of their little bodies and hugely important lives. We have also enjoyed getting to know the newest doctor to the practice --- Dr. A --- she has proven to have the attitude and style of practice that we have come to love in Darien Animal Clinic. (We just hope to NOT see you for any unexpected visits soon, k? ) Don't hesitate to meet Dr. A! Shout out to Marcy for being an incredible part of the team - she is so reassuring and positive and never loses patience with crazy anxious cat-mom's (not that i would know what that is like).

I stayed with the practice figuring it was an office familiar to my dog and I live in the neighborhood. Please stay away from this practice! My dog saw Dr. Gustafson. Post blood work at one of his visits he told me to start giving my dog Denamarin a liver health supplement. I asked him at a recent visit how his liver count was and he said good he's fine the numbers are going down. He never told me there was any problem going on and said that there was nothing to be concerned about. Fortunately, my dog was brought in because he had a growth on his eye and I saw Dr Atkinson. She spoke of possibly removing this growth and the need for blood work prior and I asked her if she could look at his most recent blood work. When she looked at it I told her he had an issue with his liver count and Dr Gustafson said it was fine and I asked her what the numbers were and the numbers that were supposed to be between 300 and 500 were 1800! I was never notified by Dr Gustafson of these high numbers. She immediately recommended testing for him and x-rays and we found out that our dog has Cushing's disease that could have been treated two years prior. I had all of my records transferred to myself and my new vet and was shocked to see that those counts were as high as 2,400. After researching those numbers many articles say that a dog needs to seek medical care immediately when the numbers are over 1,000. The final straw was after being put on medication a test was scheduled to test the count to see if the meds need to be adjusted. This was not done in the proper time frame so it was useless and not accurate. He was given his medicine 9 hours prior to the test and it should have been done at most 4 to 6 hours after taking it. My dog was now a patient of Dr Atkinson and when I brought the dog and Dr Gustafson did the test. The topper was I told the front desk girl that Dr. Atkinson said that she wanted him to take his 12:00 medication and to test the blood at 2:00 and the girl went and told Dr Gustafson what I had said and I could hear her conversation and he said it will be fine. After going home I researched this information and found out that 9 hours was way too long for the test I called back and wanted Dr Atkinson the call me back because she was in that afternoon and instead I received a call from Dr Gustafson who told me that he called the lab and the dog could stay on the same amount of medication for 3 months and I knew the results were not supposed to be back for 3 to 4 days and I knew the test was done improperly. I spoke of my concern with the results being inaccurate when I left a message to be called back. So the doctor risked my dog being on the wrong amount of medication and he was going to let him take that for 3 months! I also spent over $500 on the test. I transferred my dog out of the practice and the new practice that I am going to was very surprised and apologetic for the previous vet and their lack of care. I asked to speak to the manager at Darien Animal Clinic who was completely incompetent and said." I am not a veterinarian and exactly what do you want?"This is after I went over the numbers with the results of my dog's previous blood tests and how I was not notified and I'm not sure the outcome of my dog's health considering he is now 13 years old and this has been going on for 2 years untreated. And the topper is my poor dog had to go through the same test a week later. I was so upset with this that I had to get off the phone. I never received a call with my dogs results and I never received a call from any veterinarian at the practice and was told Dr Atkinson left the practice. I'm sure she left because of the practices incompetence. Please do not take your pets here it may be too late for my dog and after looking at other reviews this has happened before and God only knows how many more times it has happened where people were unaware of the lack of care. I am writing this just to potentially help other animals and inform pet owners of my unfortunate experience. Hopefully this practice looks into this doctor's lack of proper care and treatment of animals at this clinic. I feel that a Veterinarian has a societal obligation to serve in an animal's best interest and I sincerely hope that the practice looks into this.

We have since learned that the surgery should not have been performed for a variety of reasons and will not return to this practice. Note that this review is centered around cat treatment; hopefully the practice is more knowledgeable and compassionate to other animals, but the multiple issues we ran into should give anyone pause before bringing their pet here. When first visiting, Dr. Torok examined our kitten who had grade IV luxating patellas, the most severe grade. She let us know we would need to do surgery at 11-12 months old, when our cat was fully grown, to fully correct her knees. She also firmly expressed that in order to ensure the most successful surgery and avoid any complications, we should do a preliminary surgery ASAP to try and relieve some of the tension in her legs due to the severity of her luxation. If not, it would get "harder and harder and harder" to perform the final surgery at ~1 year old. We scheduled and had surgery performed that week as, at the time, we believed that it was the correct thing to do. Two weeks post-surgery, we had bandages removed because of swelling in our cat's foot, during which she was screaming the entirety of the time. Dr. Torok and team confirmed she had a wound on her toe. They proceeded to affirm that she was not screaming because of pain and we shouldn't be concerned, administered an antibiotic for the toe, and re-bandaged it. The following day, I called the practice as our cat had seemed very uncomfortable. Whenever she moved, she would scream/cry, and she had trouble getting comfortable enough to sleep even with pain-relievers and a sedative. Honestly, I wasn't sure if this was typical post-surgery/bandage removal. The tech said she spoke with Dr. Torok and, "Dr. Torok said she shouldn't be too uncomfortable". No mentions of increasing her gabapentin, or even acknowledgement that she could be in pain. We later took her to an ER where they confirmed she was very, very painful even after several pain-relieving meds and sedation. This is what caused alarm bells to start going off for us - this practice, which claims to be "fear-free", did not trust us nor our animal when showing signs that she was in extreme pain. We decided to transfer her care to MedVet and met with a surgeon that week to confirm we were following appropriate aftercare so our cat would recover well from surgery and get back to living her life as a kitten. They delivered the jarring news that this surgery should not have been done on a cat so young, should never be done on both legs at the same time, and she should not have been bandaged from the waist down to her toes. We now have to go to physical therapy for the next several weeks to help our cat regain her range of motion, care for her injured toes from the bandages, and then follow through with corrective surgery when she is one year old. Both us and our cat are incredibly distraught. I wish Dr. Torok had realized that this surgery was out of her depth and referred us to an orthopedic specialist as opposed to rushing us to do a surgery that, ultimately, may end up hurting our poor cat (beyond the pain that she is already experiencing). We relayed feedback regarding this surgery and our experience to the practice, and they did end up issuing a partial credit to us, but unfortunately no monetary value can be assigned to the distress we have experienced. As a final note to anyone that this makes a difference to, I learned after our visits that they perform declaws. I'm not sure the extent to which these are performed, but hopefully someone from the practice can comment so others are informed prior to choosing this as their practice.

We brought him in to see Dr. Sexton in December to discuss why he has a decreased appetite and why he isn't drinking water. Dr. Sexton advised us to change his food and see what happens. During this visit she did also take blood work and said there was nothing abnormal about it. Our dog started to eat normally again for about a month and all the sudden came to a hard stop and wouldn't touch the new food we gave him and wouldn't go near his water bowl. Growing very concerned we took him back in to see Dr. Rooney and this man did nothing but laugh in my face and told me I was overreacting and needed to wait it out.. even though I told him our dog hadn't passed any normal amount of stool in a WEEK and hasn't been drinking nearly enough water! We started him on the rice and chicken diet as directed and came up with no change. So we decided to bring him to a new vet... and within minutes of us being there they found a lymph node the size of a golf ball that Dr. Rooney had ruled out as "he's just being sensitive when I touch here- don't mind him yelping in pain" And they also found that he has pancreatitis. The new vet then showed me the blood work that was taken back in December from this vet office and it shows that he was HIGHLY LIKELY FOR PANCREATITIS THERE TOO!! Dr. Rooney AND Dr. Sexton wrote out that he was showing signs of it but then turned around and told us there was nothing abnormal about the bloodwork. So this entire time we could have been treating him for something that's been making him uncomfortable and affecting his entire system. We were never once told that this was occurring or even to just be aware of it. Never told to change up his diet due to this or that this could become an issue in the future. I am beyond upset and hope both Drs have their license taken away. I hope you never laugh in another persons face and tell them they are overreacting when they tell you something is wrong with their pet. Will never be back to this horrible clinic again.

I brought bunny back the next day and this vet took no accountability for potentially be aggressive with bunny ears. First visit charged over $250 and I fought with them to in good faith refund or offer credit for ear drops I was now directed to stop using. This vet is only concerned with over charging. Next day they fought with me at front desk and was refusing to issue my credit for the meds that they agreed to credit because we didn't bring the meds back to them for the credit which is very odd because normally any other vet does not want you to bring Meds back for credit because legally, they cannot take the meds back. They were trying to get me to pay an additional $140 for next day check and we actually had to demand that they give us our bunny back. They were trying to not give us our bunny back because of the fact that they owed us a credit and would not give it to us without the medication in hand. My daughter had to drive all the way back home and then all the way back to give them back the eardrops in order for them to issue my credit and then all of a sudden they added an additional medication onto my bill, charging me over $90 After the credit, when they told me earlier that all I had to owe them for that next day visit was a little over $40. The bottom line is that this veterinary practice took no accountability whatsoever for creating an additional either inner ear, or neurological problem by the aggressive treatment to my bunny ears. I will never go back to this place and I hope that this is a message for those that might be using this vet for exotic pets in particular.
