I don't come here because it's the fancy places you see in other cities. I come because the coffee is good tasting and always hot. The breakfast items I purchase (usually oatmeal or avocado toast) are perfect for me, and always served with a smile. It's an all female cast here and it gets very busy sometimes. But I always manage to find a clean table where the ladies bring my food and coffee. It's not fancy, but it's my favorite place to go in Anchorage for coffee and a bite. read more

Located in downtown Anchorage near our hotel. Wanted to try something other than Starbucks. I just had a large drip coffee, and I must say it was strong and tasty. They say it's roasted in Juneau. The coffee was good I only do cold brews Standard bake goods that I think you can find at any coffee shack-hut-cafe here in the state. The service was kind of weak there wasn't any sense of urgency for time or consideration. I felt uncomfortable with the clutter because the only way in is the way out and people stand there and converse as no one on the staff end is moving these people out of the way so it can be awkward I think and uncomfortable. read more

It's got a worn, homey feel. Carpet, old Alaska art, and purple cabinets. It's much smaller inside that it looks like from the exterior. You'll find all sorts of people here. Everyone from yuppies grabbing a latte before work to people that may or may not be asking for change on the street corners. WiFi isn't fast, but is above average and not frustrating. Coffee is good. I'm a poor judge of coffee though, so I don't know how I'd rank it against other spots in town. read more

Tired of hotel coffee and not wanting to support a chain coffee shop, my husband and I frequented Dark Horse Coffee while on our honeymoon in Alaska. It was located a few blocks from our hotel. They are following all necessary health and safety precautions due to COVID-19. I tried several different lattes over the course of our stay. I love the variety of flavors they offer as well as the milk alternatives. My favorite by far was a latte that contained butterscotch and salted caramel. The flavors are smooth and not overly sweet. The staff were friendly and engaging. Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to try any of their food items but their coffee spoke for itself. read more

Breakfast burrito will keep me going all day: eggy, some sausage, potato and salsa. The tortilla held it all together tightly without turning into a mess! This place was pretty good. The crowded line and dining room must mean something. Unfortunately there was several arguments among the patrons that morning that ruined the visit for us and the staff tried to calm the atmosphere back down which I felt horrible for them and would be shook up. A great find in downtown Anchorage! Even better on a Monday when most other breakfast cafés are seemingly closed or have a ridiculously long wait that forces you to be there until lunchtime. Dark Horse is a cute little bungalow with sidewalk and indoor seating, plentiful area parking, community event flyers on the walls, and the New York Times and Anchorage Daily News for customers to share. If you are an oatmeal aficionado like me, this is your Olympic gold medal winner: Dark Horse serves a giant bowl of good quality oatmeal with milk, brown sugar, dried cranberries, and pecans on the side (raisins if you want them, too, but I didn't). It was fantastic and hearty, and perfect for the morning after a late night flight arrival when I was still groggy. I also had a caramel creme frozen coffee drink which was super tasty and so good that I did a repeat to-go visit the next day. I live far from Anchorage, but visit every few months, usually staying in a downtown hotel. I will make Dark Horse a priority stop whenever I am back. read more

Very RUDE employees! First off they ask you for a tip outloud to shame you into giving a tip. Second thing was I ordered the Caramalita which is advertised as a Carmel latte with secret spices. I figured ok maybe cinnamon, nutmeg ect. I get my drink and it's spicy hot. Turns out they put cayenne pepper in it. YUCK! So I go back and ask for a regular caramel latte instead and the older lady rudely stated "it says right here, pointing to the menu, that it has spices". I'm like ok but it doesn't tell you what type of spices, it just says secret spices. She made me my new drink and when she handed it to me she again pointed to the menu and said again that the Carmalita has spices in it. Ok lady.... Needless to say I'll gladly never go back there. read more

Roasted: visiting anchorage and had to try some coffee in a city that is super concentrated with coffee shops. Had to pick one and we picked Dark Horse. It's downtown but the look and feel of the place makes you feel like you are in a neighborhood. Things are still shut down due to covid so you can only pick up to go, no sitting inside yet. Team was friendly - we were greeted upon arrival and answered my questions quickly. Tons of sugar free flavors to choose from. After you order - you have to wait in the dining room until your order is done to promote social distancing. Everything was great until the coffee sadly. My latte was way too sweet - it just over powers the taste of the coffee and ruins the overall flavor. Sadly that ruined the cup for me. The espresso was a bit burnt and no latte art either. As cute and cozy as this place is - I wouldn't seek it out again. I'd continue trying all the other coffee shops in anchorage. Unroasted: this coffee shop looks like it's in the middle of downtown with large buildings all around. The space is good size allowing one to spread out. The decor is nice with plenty of tables. Now my latte was okay. It was just a bit to sweet for me. The sugar free syrup drowned out the coffee flavor. Dark Horse Coffee is easily the best coffee in Anchorage. It is a locally owned and family operated shop in downtown Anchorage, and Karen, the owner makes sure coffee is made with extreme care. This is where I can find espresso closely brewed and made like I found in Italy. It is smooth and full of flavor. Beans are roasted in Juneau, Alaska. I am addicted. Baked goods are supplied from other local businesses in town, and other teas and chis are carefully selected by Karen. The team will ensure you are satisfied. While the shop is located by the state building, one of the larger engineering firms, the city building, and many other city buildings, Karen makes sure each cup of coffee is artfully made for consistency. This means, if you are in a hurry, this may not be the place for you, as there may be a long line. The shop serves many people their daily joe, and they are consistent customers. For good reason. You can enjoy the paper, your book, a magazine, or just the beautiful flowers on the patio in the shop. It's a great place for lunch as they have a circulation of soups and wonderful sandwiches. First off... one day the Americano is barely warm, the next it's scolding hot. The breakfast foods and cookies are NOT made in house. And to top it all off, the Daughter/Mother owners are just rude. When you order a loose leaf tea, you can pick any jar off the wall, which has an impressive selection of green, black, and herbal teas, clearly labeled. I went with the cucumber mojito green tea. Didn't have much of a cucumber taste but I quite enjoyed it. The staff were very friendly, bringing food out to the tables as ordered.
