I definitely get more take-out, however, the times I have stayed to enjoy the in-house experience, it has always been pleasant. Customer service has been good. Finally, a coffee shop that does not have a boring tea menu! I was so impressed they had 10 different teas with various varieties, and then they steeped it with a timer. I saw incredible artwork that the Reece were doing with local mochas and café drinks. It was such a fun experience going here. They actually have a Chemex and a coffee that you can get that's made with a Chemex set up, I was impressed by that. This is a great place to take friends to talk. The only negative aspect that I could find with this location is that I couldn't find a power source easily in a wall if you are working on your laptop. read more

Cool coffee spot tucked away on the back side of then midtown mall. Can't believe I've never stopped in. Interesting variety of ways to have your coffee too. You can get the typical drip and espresso based coffee or you can use French press, v60, and others I'm not familiar with. They have tables for seating as well as a coffee bar, a fireplace for ambiance, and seating in the mall area too. The staff was accommodating and our coffee was out quickly and as ordered, they have sweets too!! This spot is a nice change from the typical coffee hut or Starbucks. I had some time to kill between appointments and Steamdot's convenient midtown location in the mall made it a perfect location to relax. I've walked by many times but never gone in and I see now I've been missing out. This place is packed, even mid day, and it's not small. Even though it's big, it some how it manages to still feel cozy and yet modern at the same time. Their artisanal coffee is excellent and did not disappoint. I was also pleased to see that Brown Bag sandwiches are available at this location- yay!!! Definitely be back. read more

After coming to this cafe 3-5 times, i can say that the customer service is pretty bad, especially being a Black woman. When I've come to the front to order nobody greets me or even makes eye contact with me. When they finally speak it's almost like I'm bothering them. When I expressed my dissatisfaction to Sarah (a supervisor) she was receptive and encouraged me to speak to the owner/manager because they've been having customer service issues. The owner completely dismissed my complaints and did not want to hear anything I had to say. He was adamant it wasn't racial. However, each time I saw a customer who did not look like me they were met with a smile and a greeting at least. I would caution against this cafe, especially if you're looking to patronize businesses that treat everyone with respect and make you feel welcome. It was a very dehumanizing experience as I was just looking to start my day with coffee and some toast as I applied to jobs. I can't help but admit I cried all the way home because I've never been treated like this before, especially up here in Anchorage. Very disappointing and I do not recommend! read more

When Brown Bag closed down, I was saddened because they made an amazing Spicy Yeti sandwich. To my surprise, SteamDot and Brown Bag partnered up and now SteamDot locations serve Brown Bag sandwiches!!! Nothing like a Spicy Yeti sandwich to be cooled down by a cold brew coffee. Only downer I have about SteamDot... they do not serve simple syrup for their iced beverages, forcing me to add a flavored syrup to my cold brew coffee when I would just like a splash of sweetness. Sigh. EDIT: I just left after ordering a spicy yeti and Wilbers fate sandwich and I am sad to report that they were terrible! What went wrong? My spicy yeti wasn't on rye bread and the chicken breast that they substituted for turkey was legit processed deli meat. On the Wilbers fate, they forgot the ham and used that gross processed "chicken breast" also. They didn't even have the kettle crinkle cut chips that normally comes with the sandwich but these off brand meh chips. I went up to notify them of their mistake and they told me that they were sorry but they were out of a lot of things... ok, well, tell me that before I order something. I expressed my unsatisfying concerns and the guy just shrugged. Now I'm sad. I normally love these sandwiches but today... they get two stars. read more

Cute place! Located in the midtown mall. Coffee is good, steamdot has never really disappointed me in the coffee department. I love love love that they display and sell local artwork. It's similar to midnight sun cafe minus the lunch menu. The lounge area is cozy, I love the fireplace touch. The entire area is actually pretty nice, updated, and spacious. Definitely a place to hang out and relax with a good book or get somethings done on the laptop. There's adequate room for social distancing and they have a decent coffee menu. Service is ok and coffee is good. I got the white chocolate mocha with soy and they (super thankful) didn't mess it up. They sell a decent amount of baked goods that's on display, didn't look appetizing but I'm sure they are decent. I'm just a little weirded out looking at it, like it's been there forever in hopes of being adopted. ( I'm good) ..don't worry steamdot, that same thought crosses my mind at other coffee shops with baked goods on display...even Starbucks. Overall..it's a comfy joint. For a local brew with several locations and other stands using coffee, this is a great spot. The coffee is smooth and sweet, which reminds be of Italy. This place has a variety of ways to prepare coffee, and will take custom orders. There are some slow drip options, which my coworkers lovingly call "PFD Coffee" for its price. If that is your thing, just be prepared to pay ;). They have alternative milk choices, and great food options from local companies. The Brown Bag closed a few years ago, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that SteamDot now has Brown Bag served at their coffee shops. I will say that the menu is not quite the same, and your options are limited. You probably shouldn't expect the same exact flavors as the Brown Bag originally had, but this is a great place for a lunch date or afternoon coffee. read more

This is the best SteamDot location in my opinion. It has plenty of seating space with friendly baristas and great coffee. There's a section of chairs near a fireplace which is particularly cozy during the warmer months. Don't come here expecting the super sugary "coffee" drinks you get at the drive-thru stands around town. If your typical order is a raspberry white mocha breve with whipped cream, then this is not the place for you. If you actually like to be able to taste your coffee with little to no add-ins, then you can't go wrong really. There's so many blends and brewing methods to choose from that you don't see at any other coffee shops in town. Perfect place to read and curl up with a fresh cup of coffee. This is the best part of the Sears mall for sure. read more

Great little spot! Do not be fooled by the mall location! The interior is cozy yet modern. Kinda like brushed steel meets rustic cabin. Baristas were warm and friendly, despite it being 6am. WiFi was decent, but again...it was 6am. I'd be interested to see how it stands up to a good hammering. I got a drip coffee because I'm a simpleton. It came in a nice black mug. While I absolutely love the ambience (they have a fireplace, great music, comfy chairs, bar areas and plenty of outlets for your gadgets), they just can't get it for the coffee. I have been here twice now, and thought, "meh, i'll try a white mocha instead of mocha next time" Well that is just what I did, and while they have artistic skills with making leafs and what not (which is awesome) on my foam, the taste just is not there. I would like to say I have much diversity in Anchorage at coffee shops (especially since i'm the one who just keeps adding away at the little coffee shacks to make lovely additions to yelp), this place just doesn't do it for me. It is very much lacking the sweet flavor and has a huge espresso and foam after taste. While I won't throw my coffee away, I will sip on it and enjoy the atmosphere. You can also people watch here for those in the sears mall :) I will still come here and try maybe teas or snacks, but just not the coffee! read more

I made my way back to this coffee shop to resume my studies after being away for several months. This SteamDot Coffee location is inside the Sears Mall across from Burger-Fi off of New Seward and Northern Lights Blvd. The interior still has the same modern look with paintings and photos from various local artists displayed on the walls as well as wide windows that show the bustling main hallways of the mall. The seating area has exceptional space with many chairs and tables spread out including a fireplace with black leather chairs for relaxing and reading or working on your laptop. The employees here have always been quick and friendly when I stop in to visit. I decided to order a 16oz. Hazelnut Latte with the Caldera blend. The wait was only a few minutes even though there were several orders ahead of me being prepped. The coffee was smooth and flavorful like my last visit with the right amount of hazelnut balanced in with the Caldera. There have been a couple of updates to their menu since I was last here and that everyone should be made aware of. After numerous customer requests, they now serve Drip Coffee here and at all their other locations. This is a welcome addition for the shop as there are a lot of customers who just want a quick cup of coffee on the go without having to choose between the standard coffee bar or the Chemex and V60 Slow Bar which can take up to several minutes or longer if it is busy. Another great addition they have made available is a weekend brunch and lunch menu for customers who want a full meal rather than a pastry or cookie while they do some studying or work for a few hours. There are several food items worth checking out including the Avocado Toast (avocado, Maldon salt, and a house spiced blend served with a fruit cup), Biscuits and Gravy (rosemary biscuits, SteamDot Redeye sausage, gravy, and green onions), the Breakfast Bowl (Greek yogurt, seasonal fruit, and house made granola), and the Breakfast Panini (egg, bacon, cheddar cheese, green onions, tomato, and roasted red pepper aioli). Lunch items include the Turkey Pesto Sandwich (turkey, tomato, Havarti, pesto, and house garlic aioli on a Brioche bun) and the Club (turkey, bacon, cheddar, and tomato with choice of roasted garlic, red pepper, or jalapeno cilantro aioli). All sandwiches come with a House Salad (spring greens, roasted pumpkin seeds, garlic croutons, dried cranberries, and balsamic vinaigrette). The weekend brunch is served between 8AM-1:30PM. This is also a great place to wait while you are having your car serviced or tires changed at the Sears Auto Service Center next door if you don't want to sit in that cramped wait room next to the shop. Special events are held here like coffee gatherings and home brew classes every so often along with a book author signing that will be held in the coming months. I've come here a couple of times and had marginal to good service. The only reason I keep coming back is it's a convenient location for people who live all over town that keep asking me to meet them here. I would not to choose to come here on my own or recommend it to anyone else. Their coffee is good which is their only saving grace. However they don't heat up their food items. For $4 I don't want a cold savory scone or the option the heat it up in a microwave. I really am not a fan of microwave heated food. They have an open kitchen with a cook and j asked if I could order something made fresh for breakfast and the barista said... "yeah that doesn't start until 8am... (on a weekday?) and probably later than that this morning..." it was 7:54 when I asked and the cook was just standing there. I don't get who they're making breakfast for past 8am on a weekday. I don't always drink coffee, but when I do I prefer SteamDot.... Actually, I do always drink coffee during the mornings. I don't consider myself a coffee coniseur, but there's something alluring about pressed coffee that catches my attention. I guess I appreciate it more leaving out the basic drip coffee maker I have everyday at the office! I could definitely taste the difference. I just wish I had more time to appreciate it. I tried their special press coffee and you will know the difference from Starbucks. A tad hint of fruitiness and bold coffee beans. I forgot what it was called since it's been 2 weeks and I still remember it, but not the name haha! Overall, SteamDot has a modern vibe with a cozy hip setting. Steam Dot's second shop is even better than the first featuring a massive granite coffee tasting bar. The store is great but the beans are better. Steam Dot has become Alaska's best source for quality fresh roasted coffee. They own their own roasting works in south Anchorage so you can always count on the best beans, the best roasts and the best barristas in town. Highly recommended. Steam Dot is Anchorage's, and likely Alaska's best coffee house. They source their own beans, roast their own beans, and specialize in fresh ground individually steeped cups of coffee. I do enjoy coffee but I'm mainly an espresso person. The Steam Dot barristas are the best I've found in Anchorage. Steam Dot does have a South Anchorage location as well but I've found the Benson location to be a bit more consistent since it opened in early 2013. Steam Dot also features a small selection of house baked goods that are generally very good. I believe they plan to offer or do offer a small selection of sandwiches too. That said...I come for the espresso. As Anchorage's best coffee bar, Steam Dot gets my only five star local espresso review! read more

In a world of ever expanding choices, I have to say that it's nice to find a place that specializes in streamlining. At this steam dot location, they offer only a limited number of coffee types and a small, but varied, list of teas. As a non-coffee drinker, I can't really address the former, except to say that they look lovely with the foam designs that are all the rage with the kids today. The latter tea choices are more my bag, so to speak. They offer a green, a black, a roiboos, and an herbal mint-melange relaxation tea, in addition to a regular special tea, which is currently sunny mountain (an herbal with green roiboos hibiscus flowers, and some other flavors I can't recall). They also have a small selection of pastry/baked goods in case you get the munchies. They look fresh and tasty, so I'll be sure to try them another time. Regarding the service, the staff are friendly and helpful but not very fast. People ahead of me seemed to be getting anxious about the wait, but as I wasn't in a rush, I didn't mind. I was here to stay for a while and work, and it's good for that--the music is not loud or distracting, and the acoustics are decent, so the voices around me never got too obnoxious. Nothing a pair of earplugs can't handle, unlike some other places around. The decor reflects the minimalism of the menu--not sparse, but not cluttered. Soothing colors with a chic feel. Comfortable furniture that makes one feel welcome to hang for a while. I particularly liked the chairs that are plush but not overly soft, so they have a good structure and support long-term sitting. Nothing in this steam dot is overwhelming or requires too much thought. Simple and well-designed is how I would describe this business overall, and it's a place I will keep in mind whenever I leave the house to work. read more

Alaska has coffee shops out the yin-yang, but not many of them serve specialty coffee that is freshly brewed for each serving. Steam Dot offers coffee from around the world and each varietal has a different palate that ranges from citrus fruitiness to dark chocolate. I also like the ambience at Steam Dot. Clean lines and comfortable tables. A place I could really spend a couple hours at catching up on work. The baristas were friendly. My mom ordered a hot chocolate, but it was mostly milk and very little chocolate. She took it back to barista who was very nice about it and quickly made her a new one with a proper milk to chocolate ratio, which my mom said was much better. read more

I like this place. It has a lot going for it-- really good coffee, friendly staff/barista, relaxed vibe. I noticed two small things that need improvement: my lemon blueberry muffin was a little dry, and the atmosphere seems bare (some art on the walls and/or a big piece suspended from the center of the ceiling would go a long way). But those are relatively minor complaints. Oh, and they have a "regular customer" deal: you pay $250 to join the club, and receive a $300 gift card plus other assorted discounts. I was killing time one day and popped into SteamDot for some coffee. I knew I had a long night ahead of me and it was only 7PM. I settled for a mocha and parfait. I'm not sure if I have weird taste buds or if that was actually the worst coffee experience I've ever had. The mocha had no chocolate. It tasted like I was drinking an Americano gone bad...like the espresso shot sat for some time before it was put into a drink. I took one sip and threw the whole thing away. Now for the parfait...the granola was nice and crunchy, being that it had its own container and didn't get soggy sitting atop the yogurt. The yogurt though, was terrible. It was a plain, extremely generic, unflavored yogurt. It wasn't even a regular vanilla yogurt. This yogurt had to be flavorless AND sugarless or something. It was so bad I couldn't eat another bite. I don't normally like to trash restaurants, but I can't say one good thing about this location. The coffee and food was terrible. I like to try new places for coffee other than Starbucks (my one true love), but this place has lost my service for good. I will not be returning! read more

I've been here a few times and I do agree with the other reviews- service is super slow even if you're the only one ordering things at the time. If you are wandering around with no timeline to do things it really isn't any issue, but if you're on a short break from work or trying to get to work- give yourself extra time or plan to be late. I was annoyed when I was the only one being helped and the baristas stopped making my latte to chat with each other. If you're in the food service industry you should get your food/drinks out as fast as you can and let the customer mosey on back to whatever they were doing not the other way around. Ok rant over. Just annoyed it took 7 minutes to get a tall latte and I was late to work. Yes I timed it. The latte was ok, not the best and not the worst. The next time in I ordered cookies that were sitting at the counter and I should've asked how many days they'd been sitting out (no dates on them) because the middle of the 3 was moldy. Not a nice surprise. The yogurt parfait wasn't good either, the yogurt was sour and I assume sugarless and flavorless. I wanted to like this place but I'll get my coffee and snacks before I get to the mall next time. read more
