Came here on the way back home. Parking was across the street in a paid lot which was also busy. It was really small inside. It was also so small that only two people were manning the whole shop and the line was pretty much out the door. Inside felt really cramped as the long lines built up. They also had a bathroom inside but it was one at a time and in a weird place next to the place where you pick up your drink. We got an original waffle but it was still a little cold in the middle and not heated up all the way. Also got a French toast latte that was not that good and way too cinnamony. This barnyard coffee shop has high marks on aesthetics alone. I loved the local vibe here at this eclectic shop, where you come not just for the drink but for the friendly service as well. Since I'm not normally a coffee drinker, the staff recommended a non-dairy matcha latte for me so that I could mask the caffeine flavors just a bit. My drink order came out within a few minutes and it really hit the spot on a chilly, autumn day. The lounging area inside was also spectacular. Cute little near by coffee shop. Parking is somewhat difficult though. Had to park in the nearby parking lot and walk over. The coffee is very small. There was a line for ordering drinks. Only two people working the shop. They have some seating and cute little green plant arch way for the front door. They do have their own bathroom but I was confused because at first it wouldn't lock and then later it got fixed and the door can lock now. I ordered the French Toast Latte ($6.50) which was very good but it took a while to make. My boyfriend got the Chai Cold Brew ($5.25) but it was not good. What a neat little place. We were staying at Tahoe Star and noticed that Yelp directed us to a coffee shop right next door--but at first we couldn't find it. It turns out the shop is tucked underneath the building next to us. When we walked in, we were greeted by their coffee roaster and a bridge of foliage. It felt almost fantasy-like and gave the space a really unique vibe. I ordered the French Toast Latte, and it was excellent. The ambiance and coffee shop music were also spot on, making it a great place to relax with a drink. This will definitely be our coffee stop whenever we're traveling through Truckee. read more

Such a cool coffee shop, loved the vibes in here! Great spot if you want to chill here while you enjoy your coffee. The coffee was good and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Definitely a popular spot as every seat was filled when we arrived! Very limited food menu--they only offer two breakfast options. Breakfast burrito (rice, black beans, cheese, and chorizo) which can be ordered with or without chorizo but no other modifications since they're all pre made. Also had a breakfast sandwich option as well. I personally wasn't a fan of the breakfast burrito but my boyfriend really enjoyed his. The rice and beans were 90% of the burrito with very tiny bits of chorizo here and there so it just didn't feel like breakfast to me and I didn't finish mine. Tucked away on a side street across the train tracks from the historic downtown, this is a coffee roaster that serves up espresso drinks that rival those in the Bay Area. I've always like their espresso drinks here, but the highlight is the sparkling drinks like the Kilroy, which is espresso, sparkling water, vanilla syrup. It's one of my favourite drinks, hands down -- not overly sweet with the hint of vanilla, balancing out the slight tartness and astringency of the espresso shot. The inside also features a small arts shop where you can find items made by local artists. It's also fun to browse there. There are a few street parking spots right in front, but availability can be spotty. There's also a paid lot near by which usually has spaces. read more

Great ambiance, but the coffee is very lacking. For a roaster to have such flavorless coffee is a bit surprising. Ordered dirty chai latte that was just a weak weak latte with some kind of pepper flakes tossed in and some kind of aromatic i would not describe as cardamom(lavender?) Coffee part tasted like drip coffee and not properly drawn espresso shots. If i can t get the wife to drink it, it will just get dumped after a couple of futile sips. read more

Best coffee in Truckee. This is truly a local hub. Great dark coffee house vibe. It's a small little coffee shop but the booths by the window are a fantastic place to hunker down and get some work done or have a convo with a friend. I've done both! Whenever someone asks me where we can meet, Dark Horse is my first suggestion. Service is always friendly. The location is super convenient as it's right in downtown Truckee! Stopped in for some coffee before doing some shopping. They were a bit busy given that it was a Saturday morning and so the line moved slow and getting drinks took quite long. It was difficult to understand their system as some of the people in our party got their drinks significantly before others even though we all ordered one after the other. tldr; amazing ambience and great coffee + pastry in Truckee. Decided to take a small trip from Tahoe City to here given the high rating this place has. It was a little challenging to find street parking but not terrible. I was not disappointed. The decor is pretty good, nice wood furnishes and a lot of cool random ornamentation. I went up and asked about the available options, and they were happy to oblige. I went with the Pirates Chai, which is a nice mix of matcha and chai flavors. They also have a variety of waffles - chocolate, cinnamon and strawberry are some. I opted for a cinnamon one. The Pirates Chai was served in a nice pink yeti cup - somewhat odd contrast with the overall traditional wooden style of the cafe, but a very practical choice. Pirates chai (4/5) this had a nice mix of chai and matcha flavoring. It wasn't outstanding, but I enjoyed it. Cinnamon waffle (4/5) similar vibes here. Dark Horse is probably my favorite cafe. We got there early and seem to always get the best tasting drinks and the best service. Went early before the slopes opened and had the whole place to ourself. No line and our chai tea latte came out especially tasty this morning. Last time we got there mid morning and were about 10-12 drinks in line and waited no more than 5-10 minutes for our drinks. These drinks are always worth the wait, there is also always plenty of seating with a packed cafe. Thanks always for the coffee and great service. read more

A charming little indie, old school coffee shop a little off the main drag in a basement setting in Truckee. I've had coffee and most recently a freshly brewed ginger iced tea. You can choose any of their loose leaf teas and put it on ice which is a fun option. My colleague boasts they are his favorite Truckee roasters. They do offer some basic pastries but I did not see anything more robust. Internet was fine and they have a few tables by the window and the light while a few tables in the back. Staff was lovely and vibes were rustic and charming. Loved seeing (and hearing) a few kids playing some basic songs on the store piano. read more

First off, not being from Truckee, there's a few things you need to learn about parking. There's a huge parking shortage. I wanted to try this place many times, but there's only three parking spots out in front. I met one of the regulars, and I questioned him about the coffee shop, because I really like to try new coffee places. He let me know that right across the street, next to Jax restaurant, there was public parking. It is paid parking, but not a lot of choices for the establishments near here. Now about dark horse. It was all I expected, and then more. I walked in to be greeted by a couple of the employees. Quite friendly. I let them know it was my first visit. I had called ahead and asked if they had decaf coffee, because I had already reached my caffeine quota for the day. Yet it was still freezing outside and I wanted some warm comforting coffee... The girl offered to make a decaf mocha and it was awesome! I got to meet a friend/local there and he talked about all the stuff they do there. Open mic nights, artists show case, where artists get to show off their art. Also some gaming tables (hand made chess board) Really enjoyed my visit here and can't wait to come back. I ordered the french toast latte and it was really good. I'm giving them 3 stars because the barista was very rude. I called to order and the person who got my order was really nice, she said there was a wait but I told her it was ok since we were 10mins away. When I got there, the order wasn't ready which was fine, I went to the bathroom first and looked around and got cookies for my kids. When the order was ready and I picked it up, the barista told the cashier loudly in front of me and other customers to never get a phone order EVER! She could've said it privately to the girl who picked up my order and not in front of a lot of customers including me. I felt bad for ordering at their store and getting this young lady in trouble. I think that's bad customer service and I know to never order from there again. I like picking up my coffee so my husband and kids don't have to wait for me too long. There are other places who have online ordering and wouldn't give me that attitude. read more

This review is for food - namely, breakfast burritos This coffee shop is a bit hard to find. We had heard from a friend that they tasted the best-ever breakfast burrito in Truckee, but that was on a Friday morning. Unfortunately, we needed breakfast on a Sunday morning and it seemed like most places in town were closed. With the idea of a breakfast burrito still on our minds (we had a long drive home and wanted something quick and filling), we decided to look for one anyway, despite it most likely not being the best-ever breakfast burrito. I even said to my husband, "It's hard to mess up a breakfast burrito. Let's just get one anywhere". Boy was I wrong! I had to eat my words. With very limited options, we decided to give Dark Horse Coffee Roasters a try. I know, who goes to a coffee shop with the sole intention of grabbing food (unless it's pastries)? That was our first mistake and I knew it going in, but the shop had high reviews and we were sick of looking for something that may not be possible on a Sunday in Truckee. My husband ran in and grabbed a coffee, two breakfast burritos, and something for our preschooler son (which ended up being a jalapeno bagel and cream cheese -- it's all they had! Really? Only jalapeno?). He said the burritos came already done and wrapped, ready to grab, so at least it was quick. However, I'm dubious of hot food, that's just sitting around. The burrito was really not good. It's filling; I'll give them that. However, when I picture a breakfast burrito it has eggs, potatoes, meat, and cheese wrapped in a tortilla. This breakfast didn't have potatoes! What the heck? How is that a breakfast burrito? It had eggs, beans (yuck! I hate beans in a burrito so I was really disappointed that these are ready to go and can't be omitted. And who puts beans in a breakfast burrito?), and rice (rice!? again, that doesn't belong in a breakfast burrito!) and chorizo (bland chorizo...how is that possible?) Man, no potatoes and there's beans and rice? It was so weird tasting. Plus, it severely lacked flavor. I was happy that we happened to have some salsa in our campervan, so I was able to jazz it up a bit and add some tang and flavor. The burrito was really dry! Anyway, I highly recommend that you don't order the breakfast burrito. My husband's coffee was unremarkable. No notes. To be honest, if you come here with the sole intention of ordering coffee, I think you'll be in good hands. However, don't make our mistake and come here for breakfast burritos. That was so silly of us. They were pricey too. read more
