I just had a late afternoon lunch at Johnny's Barbeque in Rockwell, NC. I order the five piece baby flounder (salt and pepper) and it was fabulous. The pieces were sweet tasting (none had a strong taste), they were cooked to perfection and could be cut with a fork (not dried out). The white cole slaw had the perfect amount of sweetness, was fresh tasting and paired well with the flounder with a slight amount of their tartar sauce and ketchup. The french fries were crunchy on the outside and bellowie with a nice potato taste on the inside. I typically do not get tea but after working for hours in my lawn earlier, I got Johnny's sweet tea. Boy did it hit the spot and with a bottomless cup to boot! My waitress was sweet, efficient and made sure my food was served piping hot. For the price and the quantity and quality of food served, this may be the best deal in the area when wanting some good old fashioned fried fish. Upon leaving, I found the restaurant is now owned and operated by a couple of long time employees. That could help explain why the food has returned to the quality it was before Covid. read more

I've been eating at this restaurant for about 25-30 yrs. Never had a bad experience. When I ordered a large fried flouder dinner it always had 2 large pieces of fish. Saw the sign today "under new management." Ordered a large flounder dinner to go. Got home, one piece of fish. I would gladly have paid a couple dollars more if I had known they were ripping me off. They've got their last dime from me. The "new management" is a cheap, chiseling bottom feeder. Don't eat here if you want your money's worth. read more

This place used to be really good. It's no where close to being the dining experience it once was. We were seated immediately. Our orders were taken reasonably soon after that. Our food was a little slow coming out. Our server never returned to table. She never filled our drinks. She never checked if everything was okay. We saw her talking to her coworkers a lot. We both ordered a barbecue sandwich and a side. The barbecue was okay. Mine had two hunks of fat on it that I had to pick off. The baked potato was dehydrated(I needed more butter and sour cream). I always hate to see good place like go downhill. Even their sanitation grade has bottomed out. If they really cared they could probably bring it back up. read more

We ate here on 5/25/2025 man you would think the food would have been better than it was, I had the ribeye steak sandwich it mire fat then meat and toilet much seasoning on it and the ff were so hard I couldn't eat them , my husband had the cube steak and it look like a half a piece of cube steak and a little bit of squash and a little little bit of baked beans and three little bitty hush puppies that were round all that food for $30 and neither one of us got full we will never go back there to eat again and I do not recommend anyone going because for that amount of money could have got more more food than that and it should have been a whole lot better tasting food read more

Just ate at Johnny's we go there all the time and the food had gotten better under new owners. Problem is we found 2 hairs in our food. My soon had one in his homemade chips and I had one in my macroni and cheese. I reported it to the waitress and she walked into the back when I saw 2 cooks looking out and one had long brown hair that was loose. That's the hair color in our food. The waitress never came back. Very poor service to regular customers who are at this point not going back. One hair I can understand but 2 hairs in 2 different plates and 2 different foods is nasty. read more

Not much open on Labor Day so we gave it a shot. So there are no surprises, they only take cash or local checks although an ATM is at the entrance.. Drove over and explored Morrow Mountain State Park and Lake Tillery. Never occurred to us that ir was Labor Day and restaurants may not be open. Our mistake. we should have nailed this detail down earlier. Driving back we remembered this place being open from our trip down to the Park so we opted for it. Walked in and were finally told to seat ourselves which we did.and out server was there fairly quickly and took our drink order and gave us our menu's. We both settled on specials. I had the BBQ Plate along with French Fries Red or BBQ Slaw and Baked Beans and or course the perfunctory hush puppies. My companion ordered the "Dipped Chicken", Sweet Potato Fries, and White Slaw. Neither of us were overwhelmed with lunch. First bite of the BBQ was all fat but it did get better as I worked through it. The Table Pepper Vinegar Sauce was very heat and no character. The Fries were oily and soggy and the Red Slaw had no bite to it. The Hush Puppies and the Baked Beans were both very good however and were the highlight of the meal. My companion could not describe the Dipped Chicken so hard to characterize. She had asked before she ordered if it was breaded and was told it was Dipped so she went ahead and ordered it. Whatever it was, was very spicy and not spicy in a characteristic BBQ way. While Slaw was OK but she had to add more sugar to it. Sweet Potato Fries were fair. While our server was good, there was an ongoing dispute among the servers about who was suppose to bus which tables and who was going to check out customers. If's fine to have these discussions but not in front of customers. Not a high point in all of the restaurants I have visited and reviewed over the years. read more

Really better than reviews show. Large clean restaurant with booth and table seating. Large private lot parking. The service was fast and friendly. The menu was large with lots of choices and daily specials. My pic was the chicken philly sandwich which came on recommendation. This is a relatively new looking place, and big. They offer all 3 meals, 7 days a week. Besides BBQ, they have Seafood (including some All-You-Can-Eat items), the usual variety of Sandwiches & Salads, and Daily Specials ranging from Spaghetti to Prime Rib. The BBQ is tender, but comes unsauced and is dry, and bland. They offer 2 sauces, one vinegar based, one tomato based - the vinegar based helps, but it is a very mild sauce. This is not bad pork, but not nearly as tasty as a number of other places in this area offer. The regular Chopped Sandwich goes for $3.35. The Chili Dog was Ok, but like much of the hot dog chili in this area, the primary taste is sweetness. Their Foot Long costs $3.09, and is not one I'd order again. . read more

Needless to say, I was disappointed. This place must be under new management. They were not busy at all when we ordered, and had to wait an hour for our food (which was just frozen fried food). The food is so so but the staff was friendly. We went the day before Christmas because my grandmother wanted to go. This is the type of establishment she prefers and for her I'll go anywhere. We didn't realize we were walking in half an hour before closing but the staff didn't rush us at all. They even checked to see if we ordered all you can eat so they could get the kitchen to prepare extras. I ordered the popcorn shrimp and it was just fine. Average and expected. read more

Walked in, sat down, waited almost 10 minutes at a dirty table which a bus boy finally came and wiped down. This was the only interaction we had from employees. We were never spoken to, given menus, nothing! Now maybe they were short staffed, but had they at the very least acknowledged us in some way then we wouldn't have minded waiting, but they couldn't be bothered to do that. 4-15-19 update Came here because I did not want to cook...came in and saw an open booth, sat down. We sat for a good 10 minutes. I saw a waitress sitting at the booth beside us talking and I thought surely that is not our waitress that see us sitting here but continues to "vent" to customers. Welp yep she was! So she gets up and sideways gives us straws while still talking to the couple. She took our drink order and said she was gonna be right back with a menu...some other girl brought our drinks. And now we are going on 20 minutes and no menus to look at! Really?!? So I get up go to the register and ask how much for the 1 tea and water that we had not drank. The waitress was there and just acted like whatever. They did not charge me but really that is just terrible service!!! No wonder there was only a handful of tables in the place. This has always been a fav place of my family's but recently disappointed. My DIL ordered baked potatoes with our plate. When we got our order they brought us sweet potatoes because they were out of baked potatoes. What not ask if we would like something else? *sigh* I used to like this place but the service has gotten terrible. The past three times I've been it takes sooooo long to get our food that I debating just leaving and going somewhere else. The food is ok, I like the BBQ but I try not to go there anymore because of the service. The waitresses we have had the past few times have also been pretty bad, getting everything wrong with our order. They always fix it but it already takes so long, then you have to wait longer.
