I had a chance to visit this place last month and I had such a great experience. I love how this place is one back on, but I also had a chance to meet one of the owners and he was such a nice guy. From the time you walk in you feel as if they're only catering to you. On your first visit someone will go through the menu with you, talk about the history of the restaurant and allow you to even have a taste tester before you order. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty packed, but they do have TVs in there in case anyone needs to catch some sports. Portion sizes are shareable in my opinion! This place is well known for the poor boys sandwiches however I decided to do everything more individually. I got the oysters two pieces of fish, and shrimp. The bread is to die for! Love the potato salad! I am not a huge jambalaya fan, I did have the opportunity to taste it and it was decent. They also had the daiquiri machines over at the bar, made you really feel like you were in New Orleans! I don't do this very often, but this place definitely deserves five stars just based off of ambience in customer service. Food is exceptional as well! Came by for lunch over the weekend and had a very nice lunch with my wife. She got the shrimp po boy with fries while I had the soft shelled crab po boy with tater salad. The crab had a nice crunch after being fried and I was very happy with my choice. The tater salad was also very good and one of several sides you could get with the sandwich. The place was nice and spacious and had a nice big mural painted on one of the inside walls. Everything was well kept and clean and the girl taking our order was very helpful since it was our first time here. I called it for my to go order...I apologize for not remembering the name but the man who answered and got my order was friendly and really made sure he got the order right. Like what they say, you can sense the person's enthusiasm when they answer the phone and this man was more than happy to get my order. On a Sunday the place was busy and you can just feel the friendly vibe. The patrons are happy and so are the staff. I guess that's Norwood who was making those samples for the 1st time guests. I did a little chit chat with him and yes, those Po Boy Catfish are fresh and just get everything on it...delish! And that Gator sauce...yum! Boyfriend liked it very much! We frequented the Marina location until it closed a number of years ago, so it was a real treat to visit Darrow's in the Carson location. As Norwood said when he greeted us, we are part of his "Marina family" and happily so! The food was even better than I remembered. We got the grilled catfish supper, spicy, it was perfectly cooked, tender and more flavorful than hot. Greens, great, rice and beans, a classic and cornbread "fresh out the oven," which tasted so good, moist, but not thick and heavy like some cornbread can be. Shrimp and grits, a delight, with buttered bread, so good. Also an order of fried chicken wings which were perfect, not greasy at all, and the green sauce complimented the dish, I literally licked the cup clean. I thought we would have leftovers, but nope, 2 of us ate the whole thing right there. Norwood creates such a friendly atmosphere, it really makes you feel like you are back in New Orleans- except the food comes out faster. He would greet every customer, introduce folks to each other and cars passing by would honk and wave. A real neighborhood vibe on a bustling LA intersection, fun! Norwood told us about the history of the restaurant too, started on Venice Blvd (lots of celebrities), moved to Marina Del Rey (rent got too high), moved to Carson and things must be going well because even at an off hour it was busy. You feel as if a great big hug is being wrapped around you as you walk into Darrow's New Orleans Grill. Darrow, a native of New Orleans, will tell you all you need to know about the history of each menu item and, for instance, why it's called "Lagniappe". He is full of knowledge and ready to welcome you into this delicious food community that he's created and named after him. The food: I don't know why more places don't welcome you with samples of some popular dishes, but Darrow's definitely does. We sampled the gumbo, jambalaya, & red beans and rice. We were thrilled with all of it and have never been blessed enough to have had such delicious gumbo touch our tongues. We felt fully immersed in the New Orleans culture and wanted more. We ordered the gumbo yaya and the Po' Boy New Orleans Classic. The food arrived just after our INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS mixed Hurricane and Daiquiri. Wow. The gumbo was as savory and perfectly spiced as we had expected. It had large chunks of meat and crab. The po' boy had fried clam and shrimp, which were coated in corn meal, so the crunch was out of this world. The service: You. Can't. Top. It. It's second to none and Darrow himself will show you why. The vibe: The mural is something to be taken in in pieces. It's so much color and culture and beautiful scenery that it'll take you a few trips to notice all the nuances. The staff warms the entire restaurant with their attention to detail and care for each one of their customers. Conclusion: I highly recommend this place for the experience as a whole. Walked in and was greeted right away at the register m. The young man gave my friend and I some samples to try, since it was both our first time going. As he left, a lady took over the register and proceeded to help us. I loved how patient she was with explaining the menu to us; Even recommended some stuff. The roux just wasn't good; this place ain't got nothing on my sis and mom's gumbo. The jambalaya has the right color and texture but there was barely any meat in it. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and the joint was crowded/busy. Darrow himself was at the register greeting the customers and giving recommendations. He was kind enough to offer samples of his red beans and rice, jambalaya, and gumbo broth. Everything tasted ono, especially the jambalaya. So, I went ahead and ordered the Zeek combo (Zeek sando, side of jambalaya, and soda) to go. The Zeek consisted of fried catfish, fried shrimp, and potato salad. The sandwich tasted good, especially with the Louisiana Hot Sauce! Man, that sando was filling as I could only eat a quarter of my side of jambalaya. The catfish po'boy was excellent, with perfectly fried and flavorful fish, and all the fixings (sans tomato). The seasoning on the fries was pretty spicy, and I wish they'd have warned me about that or at least asked if I wanted heavily seasoned fries, but overall, the service was nice and the environment was casual, not too loud, but lively enough not to feel self conscious about chatting and catching up with a friend. Since leaving the Marina area, I have been scrounging around looking for a good Creole/Southern Food restaurant. Granted, Orleans and York do fill the void, there are times they don't have what it takes to scratch my itch that Darrow's did. Thankfully Darrow's opened a new location in Carson. I am glad to report the po'boy sandwiches DO NOT disappoint in the least. Very flavorful and filling... not too filling, but just enough and pricewise not too bad. The rice and beans were really good as well. I took some as leftovers to work the following day and think they were better than the night we had them. The underground parking was very much appreciated and during the Summer months I would think the patio would be a nice place to sit and enjoy a taste trip back to New Orleans. read more
