First time customer, soon to become an avid repeat customer!! The Creole sauce in the shrimp and grits was "can't stop eating, can't get enough" great! My son had the Shrimp Po'Boy, and boy, was it a site to behold. A simple sandwich turned into a masterpiece of flavor. The owner, proprietor, Michelle, was accommodating and so so so pleasant. We came here for a hearty breakfast. The menu has a variety of choices. You can order breakfast, lunch and dinner at anytime. The owner, Michelle is very welcoming. She shared some of the history of the restaurant and how she ran it with her mom in honor of her dad. Such a sweet story. The coffee is great as I had a headache. I ordered a grilled chicken omelette that came with potatoes and a homemade butter biscuit. Yum. My boyfriend ordered the French toast. The boys ordered a fried catfish po boy sandwich and the pork chop with greens and yam. Everyone enjoyed the food. We had leftovers to enjoy later. I was looking for someplace that had good takeout meatloaf and stumbled on this restaurant. It's a little farther than I like to go, but soul food in the South Bay isn't really available. The meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread, and collard greens was just what I wanted. Everything I tried was worth the distance and I only tried 1/10th of their dishes that appealed to me. I'm trying to get someone to go with me for brunch one weekend because of their amazing brunch menu. Looking forward to trying the peach cobbler French toast or Red Velvet pancakes. I ordered the lunch plate, the meat loaf and 2 sides ( collar geeen and rice+ corn bread). I ordered 2 extra sides ( Mac & Cheese and red beans). I love that it has that home cooked taste. The gravy was just the right thickness. The meat loaf is moist and tender. Great portions as I shared it with my boyfriend and we didn't finish it. We were looking for a breakfast spot that we hadn't been to. So Matthew's became the go to,couple weekends ago. We ordered Red Snapper scrambled eggs and grits for one meal. Then I ordered pancakes eggs (with onion and cheese) turkey sausage patties (that came as links) and a cup of coffee. The service and our host were very gracious and friendly. She catered the music play list to a '90's play list while we waited as well as ate. Very thoughtful. We were the only people in the restaurant our entire visit but take-out orders were coming and going. The ambiance was a pleasant dinning experience. The food was fresh but at some points not properly prepared. The Red snapper literally fell out of its breading which denoted either no flour no wet batter. Something. My husband found this place just by chance. I was skeptical at first, because since I could remember most restaurants in this place never last. I must say after eating this food today, I believe that it is here to stay. I had fried chicken, mac and cheese and Krave greens (cabbage and collards mixed together) and a cornbread muffin and my husband had peach cobbler waffle, bacon and eggs and we shared a side of home fries; everything was delicious!! This seems like a really cool place to chill. They have a full bar, and I saw board games. I came on a week day, so it may be lively in the evening. The collard greens were extremely bitter, very bland, and mostly thick steams but tender. The mac and cheese was a little mushy but edible. I tasted cheese but didn't see much. Let me start by making either a testament to how greedy I am or how damn good the food here is. I'm literally just finishing my leftovers and am mad I have to brush my teeth. And they raved about the food, like many others.. and here I am. Where's #KeithLee when you need him? I saw him say LA didn't have a good food scene. I say , whereabouts? And from the valley all the way down to Long Beach. Like this place. I ordered: smothered chicken/ potato salad/ fried okra Boo: Smothered short ribs/ Mac and cheese/ yams They both came with cornbread muffins. Took me back to my grandmas blessed hands. Tbh. The chicken without the smothered.. tender meat, seasoned.. and I say seasoned !! Tastes like the meat and the fry batter are seasoned to a yummy perfection. Luckily the gravy was a perfect pair and consistency (so re heating was good. I didn't get turned off looking at oily/ chunky/ separated gravy.) . I don't usually eat potato salad, I went for it for variety. I'd maybe personally tone down the tart a smidge but I'd eat that at a picnic. Again seasoning came into play. Most people don't put that elbow and foot in their seasoning, just tease you with the foot.. not here. 100% with flavor. My boo isn't into greens too much, I had a variation that had greens and cabbage in it.. worth the gas. Not gonna lie . I bet that pot liquor is amazing. Now, I think a little heat would set them off! Not that they were anything less than tender and flavorful. I was so greedy I didn't realize I ate all of them at the restaurant when I got home was pissed I didn't have any leftovers. Short ribs: fell off the bone. You know those tik Tok videos where people are sucking the meat off the bone. Me literally in the restaurant. Without even trying. Now caveat .. there was a lot of fat on them. Could have been just ours.. I'm a suck the flavor out the fat kinda girl but boo isn't so that was his only gripe. He found his way over to my chicken happily. The yams (boo says ) Not too sweet but definitely had my plate tasting like Christmas. Oh SIDE Note- this place has a liquor license! Order a real drank. So for me mimosa was a must. Last out server was a very soft spoken and polite woman. Wasn't rushing us, gave us the appropriate amount of tending and space. Very pleasant. If you're craving soul food or are in the area. I've never been disappointed with their food. I ordered 4 different dishes 1 smothered pork chops with yams, macaroni, and dressing. 2. Red snapper dinner with greens and macaroni. 3. Veggie dinner with the crave, macaroni and cheese 4. Shrimp and grits When I tell you everything was on point so much flavor but not overly flavored. My only complaint was the smothered pork chops were tough, ( hence 4 stars) flavorful but tuff maybe they should've let them simmer a lil longer, but overall the food was a 8 outta 10. read more
