This review is limited to the bar area and service, we did not eat at the restaurant. When you live in cattle country Texas, the lure of an expensive steak dinner in the. Caribbean is not tempting! LOL We stopped by D&J's several times during a recent stay in Cruz Bay, STJ. It was right next to our hotel, which made it the perfect location for happy hour (before dinner elsewhere) and a night cap. The only negative of the bar was its street-side location. Traffic is literally just a few feet away, on a fairly busy street. That said, we had great, fun, friendly servers every visit. Nice drinks menu, and bartenders are great with the cocktails. I did have the escargot during happy hour, it was very good! Definitely worth a stop for cocktails here, nice happy hour food specials! read more

We have dined at this restaurant every year since first opened. Tonight was very disappointing. The quality of the food is not the same in the past. The filet was choice and definitely not prime as advertised. No chance. The desserts were a bust too. My son ordered vanilla ice cream and the freezer burn was awful. The chocolate torte tasted old as well, definitely not fresh. Also came with a side of vanilla ice crystals. There is a reason why there were so many empty tables, which was also a new theme this year. That being said the sides were good, and the service was very good. They worked well as a team. My husband and I came here to celebrate our 30th anniversary and we were so glad we did. I requested outside patio booth but instead we sat inside and I'm so glad we did. The ambiance inside was perfect! (No where here are you going to get an Ocean view.) from the decor to the music, it was perfect. Our server was top notch the whole time while we were there. I had the spicy margarita and yikes! Never have had a margarita that spicy ever! So only it get it if you can handle the spice. My husband got the drink that has balsamic in it, get it! It's unique and delicious, just get it! For dinner he got the ribeye and I got the mahi, we shared the mac-n-cheese. All were delicious. One of the best mahi is have ever had, cooked perfectly. Dined recently and even though we had reservations, the only table available was in the external covered bar area, close to the local traffic. Not quite as peaceful as we had hoped. While our server, Ellie, was charming and most helpful, unfortunately, our dinner fell short. We split an $80+ 10-12 oz lobster, which was alright, but paired with green beans and mac and cheese, seemed like an odd combination We ordered an appetizer, coconut shrimp that was overdone and sent back. We had been to the other 4 restaurants in Cruz Bay that would be deemed as the nicer ones and had great experiences (except 1 place). So we researched and got a recommendation and here we were. It was not the prototypical fine dining experience, maybe I was expecting more of that vibe, but after thinking about it, maybe they are not going for that....and that's OK. I truly believe based on many little observations that this is a passion project for the owners and it seems the staff is either related or very loyal and long tenured - both good things. Upon entering, there is a little bar in the portico with a table that was meant for us - we asked to be seated inside as it is incredibly loud on the street - not helped by a wedding reception next door. No way we could sit out there. But it looked fun otherwise. Bartender holding court (along with an owner I believe) and some regulars. So we were seated and greeted. Very very nice server (Blonde - don't remember her name - I wish I did - she was super kind). At first, I was not at all excited - again, it was VERY loud due to the wedding reception next door, the ambiance was way more casual than I expected, nice, but casual, tables, and a very prominent dry aging cooler along with metal racking and storage....there was a large party behind us with screaming kids, so to be fair, super hard to settle in - nothing here has to do with the restaurant - other than the decor, so no problem there Drinks were very very good - really enjoyed them. We had been to St. John numerous times and always walked by the restaurant not knowing what was behind this big wooden doors. From start to finish, our experience was awesome. Our server was personable and knew so much about each item on the menu. We of course got steaks (hello....it's a steakhouse haha!) and ate every last bite of mouthwatering tenderness. The steak felt like it just melted in your mouth and was customizable with your choice of sauce. The other non-steak options on the menu did look just as wonderful, and I am sure if we returned we wouldn't hesitate to order any of them. Best meal hands down! My husband and I spent a week on St John and we ate at quite a few local restaurants. Many were good but Dave & Jerry's was great. We are from Texas so we have high expectations from a steakhouse and weren't sure how an Island steakhouse would be... it was great! The decor makes it upscale but in a perfectly island kind of way, not too stuffy but still nice enough that the $200 bill was well worth it. We both got filets which were delicious (I got the butter sauce but it was unnecessary the meat alone was very good) we also got the mashed potatoes, truffled Mac and cheese and button mushrooms. It's hard to say which was the best because they were all so good! We took home some leftovers and enjoyed them for breakfast the next day. Went into Dave and Jerry's last night for an impromptu meal. Being new to the island means a lesson for me in how exterior looks can be deceiving. Passing by the outer bar and into the interior restaurant where we were greeted by Sophie, our server for the evening. Both Sophie and the other server whose name escapes me at the moment were bright, attentive, sharp around the table and well versed in the menu. Everything was sublime, with all parties agreeing the coconut crusted shrimp was the best they had ever had. Steaks were cooked perfectly, the Gorgonzola cream cheese sauce was exquisite. While the rest of the table had wine, I indulged in the house margarita which was equal to the rest of the meal. It was light, well balanced, not sugary or syrupy. One of the top 5 margs I have had anywhere. All in all, a strong recommendation for all to make this a destination while you are on the island. read more

We mentioned on our OpenTable reservation that it was our honeymoon and they gave us both a free glass of champagne which was very kind and set the meal off right. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I wish being "full" wasn't a real thing because I wanted to keep eating. Hands down the best meal we had on our weeklong trip on St John. To note, we never had a bad meal the whole trip - really impressed with the food quality out there. With that said, the ribeye steak may have been the best one I've ever been served. Melt in your mouth, delicious crust, cooked and seasoned perfectly. It's on par with a high end steakhouse in Vegas. The location wasn't far from our resort and we were greeted and seated as soon as we arrived. Our reservation was scheduled earlier but in true fashion of divas we called the restaurant to push the reservation back because we were fashionably late! The host, manager, and waiter were all nice and accommodating. The menu was explained thoroughly. We were seated outside directly across from the bar. The restaurant was practicing social distancing and serving food on paper plates to maintain safety. We had a smorgasbord of food on our table and the sides were generous- definitely enough for sharing. Well we didn't figure that out until after we ordered. I was impressed with how fresh the food tastes. It took a while for the food to come out but hey I have no complaints because it took us a while to get dressed & make our way up here. All in all when I return to the Islands I will undoubtedly return to this restaurant. read more

We travel to St John every year and have gotten meal kits from D&J, usually a steak dinner for two, and loved the quality, no need to park, and the flexibility of cooking it when we want. This time we had friends join us and got the table for 4. The steaks weighed 9 oz total (9/4 is not equal to 4). That was strange but ok, since they were very nice filets. The deal breaker was that in addition to the small steaks there was only one very small slice of chocolate torte, 3/4 inch at the widest part. I thought surely that was a mistake since we had gotten 2 pieces in the previous kits for two people.
