Mahi with capers and wine sauce
Toby D.

Very nice setting on the water. Excellent mahi with capers in a wine sauce and a delightful Lime in Da Coconut drink.

It was a fantastic meal. We had various lobster dishes and I had a pork tenderloin. It was all very good. My recommendation, use the provided OFF at the entrance. The mosquitoes from the area eat very well too! :-)

This kitty, right of the walkway. Tolerating our presence. She was a darling feline, welcoming Marjan's strokes and caresses!!

Planning our dinners while visiting St Croix, Duggan's was featured on every list of recommended restaurants, and several of the local residents echoed that recommendation. Needless to say, we were pleased to reserve a table the very day we called. The restaurant lies at ocean front, sitting midst verdant trees and shrubs. The structure is of typical oceanfront design, constructed several years ago. The interior reveals a dining area of several tables, with a small bar overlooking tables. We expected upscale decor when reading reviews, but the entirety is more of a casual look and feel throughout. Guests were definitely in casual attire. Interesting decor are college pennants lining the restaurant at the junction of wall and ceiling. There are open doors around the restaurant, and ceiling fans are placed to provide some ventilation. The restaurant is not air conditioned, and mosquito spray is strategically placed at the receptionist podium. We were immediately taken to our table at the reserved time, and May, our waitress filled our aperitif wishes, Pouilly Fuisse for my lady, dirty vodka martini (very competent) for me. We shared the lobster egg roll appetizer, a roll of very generous diameter, somewhat assuming the proportion of a burrito, more than a roll. The roll was primarily cabbage, with meager strips of lobster within. While disappointed with the stingy bits of lobster, the taste was somewhat pleasing. Marjan ordered the tuna entree, sided with mango rice and broccolini. The finned creature was prepared exactly to my lady's desire: rare. She considered the protein and the sides excellent. Unhappily, the celebrated Irish Whiskey Lobster was not offered, apparently that entree is only on menu if the fishmongers can provide large size crustaceans. I was offered instead, a medium sized lobster, prepared with their special spices. I asked if I might have a medium sized lobster, Irish Whiskey prepared, but was told that the chef required large size lobster for that menu item. We thought this a bit curious. My lobster was presented sliced down the middle, with the flesh of the lobster not freed from the shell. Think of a sagittal plane incision cutting shell and flesh into left and right halves, as compared to cutting just the shell and lifting the body of the lobster atop the shell. None the less, the lobster was very overcooked, the unfortunate creature rubbery and chewy. We considered the entree not adequately seasoned. So, our impression of Duggan's? Given the vaunted reviews we had read, we were disappointed. Marjan's dish was delicious, but the limited options for the lobster, and the poor execution of their signature dish somewhat of a failure. In fairness, we visited on the July Fourth holiday, so could that have affected kitchen staffing? Perhaps other menu items would prove more promising, and other days would demonstrate a bit more consistent culinary performance. We offer a rating of "4" given that proviso.

So so good! A fantastic place to dine while in st croix! We came with a large group and started with a round of cocktails. Our waitress was amazing and even made us blue cheese olives! Martinis, old fashions, Prosecco. Then switched to wine which they chilled for us since it was SO SO hot out. We did sit by the door which had a strong breeze. Lots of appetizers, calamari was the best! Lightly fried with two dipping sauces. Our chopped salad was delicious! I had the mahi fish and chips and let me tell you they were the best I've ever had. SO FRESH! My colleagues enjoyed their whiskey lobsters and surf and turf meals. For dessert we got the peanut butter cake, chocolate flourless cake and key lime pie. All were excellent. You cannot beat this view AND FOOD. Will definitely be back!

Three days ago, my family and I stopped to pick sea grapes on the beach area by Duggan's Reef. After about 30 to 40 minutes of picking sea grapes, we got hungry when we smelled the wonderful seafood aroma coming from the restaurant. As we weren't quite dressed for a dine-in experience, I decided to inquire about ordering the food to go. I approached the host standing at the desk at the greeting area and inquired about ordering food to go. He told me that I could order the food to go but became a little reluctant when I mentioned that I planned to order about 5 dishes. I questioned his reluctancy then he said it was OK. I got a copy of the menu so that my family and I could discuss what we wanted to order. I mentioned my discussion with the host which deterred some family members from wanting to order any food. As a result, I just ordered one appetizer (Crispy Calamari) and two entrées (Spinach, Mushroom, and Seafood Alfredo and the Grilled 14 oz Ribeye) instead. I returned to the host and placed my order. I was given a 35-minute wait time but my order was ready closer to the one-hour mark. I waited close to the host desk until my order was ready. When my order was ready, a hostess brought it out to me. I told her that I would like to look at them to confirm my order before finalizing the payment. She looked at me strangely and made a sarcastic remark before placing the bag with the containers on a table for me to take a look at the content. In any event, the content looked fine, so I paid the bill and left with my order. The crispy calamari appetizer had a nice crunch to it. It was hot and cooked well but could have used a little more seasoning and/or herbs. I was not impressed with it. The ribeye and seafood alfredo were big hits. The ribeye was flavorful, cooked exactly as ordered (medium rare), and the sides were tasty. The seafood alfredo was creamy, well seasoned, and had a balanced flavor. The food is pricey but overall, we enjoyed the food. My first visit to Duggan's Reef was for my birthday dinner in 2014. I had a dine-in experience. I enjoyed that visit much better than this one only because of the tension I experienced when trying to order food to go during this visit.

Amazing lobster and have to try risotto!!!!

We celebrated our 6th anniversary here this year. Amazing food! The atmosphere and all is a little dated, and the tables and chairs seemed to be lawn chairs and such - kind of uncomfortable but I suppose durable as they restaurant is right on the water. The lobster was to die for and the salads were even amazing! We weren't as impressed by the carrot cake for desert, it was more a spice cake, but it wasn't bad. Overall a great experience and would recommend!

For our appetizers, we had the mussels and Deviled Eggs - the mussels were very good. And the broth was so good to sop up with bread. We had fuego margarita and Old fashioned for our cocktails. My Margarita had a nice kick. One kid ordered the no-jito cocktail and enjoyed it. For dinner, we had the creole shrimp pasta, ribeye and prime rib. The pasta and ribeye were well received but the prime rib was just okay. We had the zucato for dessert and it was a very interesting, layered, varied textured dessert! Food came at a nice speed and the servers/wait staff were very friendly to customers. We are so glad we had our christmas dinner there.

We tried the Caesar, garden, Greek & Thai salads. Fresh and well seasoned with house made dressings. Next up seared tuna & escargot. The seared tuna was sliced thin with sesame seeds & poppy seed crust. Beautifully rare. The escargot came with 4 toast points to soak up all the garlicky, buttery sauce. Entrees were lamb chop lollipops chop lollipops. Bleu cheese strip steak, chicken piccata and seafood pasta. Everyone enjoyed their choices immensely. Our server was very nice and helpful with recommendations. Multiple servers came around refilling our waters and making sure we were getting everything we needed. Our server had some good recommendations for cocktails and mocktails! The menu included a very large range of cocktails and mocktails (as someone who rarely drinks alcohol this was appreciated). Overall the food was good.. not great. Something about it seemed to be unfinished or missing that little sparkle that makes you remember a meal. For appetizers we had the Caesar salad, artichoke and crab dip, and the bang bang shrimp. Caesar Salad - This was enjoyable! The romaine was fresh and was tossed in the right amount of dressing and parm. However, the croutons were soggy and lacked almost all crunch. Artichoke and Crab Dip - This app seemed a little bland. There wasn't really too much of an artichoke vibe, or a crab vibe for that matter. The best was the cheese on top. The toasted bread that accompanied the dip was plain as well. Bang Bang Shrimp - This dish was tasty. The flavors were as described and cohesive. I liked how the shrimp were smothered in sauce but maintained their crispy! Skin Fried Snapper (Entree Special) - The presentation of this dish was pleasing, unfortunately that's about all I enjoyed of it. It came over rice, broccolini and corn. The fish was lacking flavor and the skin was soggy and squishy, no crisp to be found. The rice was definitely undercooked and the corn seemed to just be taken out of the can and put on the plate. The broccolini was very good. Desserts (Rum Cake and Chocolate Mousse) - As a big dessert person, these were delightful. The rum cake came out warm and was a nice consistency. The chocolate mousse was the star of the desserts. It was visually appealing and well as tasty. It was so light and airy while packing a flavor punch. 3/5 stars. I would give Harbour Prime another try next time I'm in STX!

We had the Rasta Pasta, the Seafood Chowder, the Crab Cakes - I cannot recall what the 4th person in our party had - but 2 entrees, 2 apps., a side salad and one cocktail - $160. The service was atrocious. The waiter didn't come to get a drink order (not even water) for 20 minutes. Then we waited over an hour for our food. We watched tables outside get seated after us fed and left before we even got food. Our waiter never removed cocktail glasses, never checked back. In fact, a waitress from the other side of the dining room checked on us and obviously it wasn't her issue. We watched a table seated ahead of us with two young boys finally get their food - burgers with no fries, no ketchup, no butter for the lobster etc. They waited another 15 minutes and asked another wait person for that after our waiter failed to return with the same. Besides some of the waitstaff being completely inept, I suspect that the kitchen is too small or understaffed. Either way - they should not seat tables that they cannot actually accommodate in some sort of timely manner. The place is beautiful though.

Our server, David, came and greeted us a few minutes after we were seated, told us about the specials, and provided us with menus. Our table was a bit sticky so we mentioned it to the David who informed us that there was some sort of issue with the finishing on our table as well as some of the other tables in the dining area. I was a little surprised that these tables had that type of issue and were still being used by customers in the dining area. my nephew visited this restaurant a few times before. He was excited for me to try a drink that he ordered last time he visited, TAMARIND OLD FASHIONED, so we both ordered one. The drink was not as my nephew remembered it; he said he could actually taste the tamarind and it was a really good drink. What we received tonight, was mixed differently. It tasted like angostura bitters and a ton of alcohol. It was very strong and neither of us could taste the tamarind flavor in it. I mentioned it to David, and he had the bartender add some more tamarind syrup and ice to the mixture. When he brought it back, it was OK but still not tasting as my nephew experienced it the last time he was there. We ordered appetizers and main courses. My nephew thoroughly enjoyed the beef appetizer special. I ordered the bay scallops appetizer special. The scallops were cooked well but I wasn't too crazy about the sauce. I ordered one of the entrée specials for tonight, the little neck clams with linguine. I've ordered a similar dish at other restaurants before so I typically enjoy it. The al dente style of the linguine was perfect but the entire dish was way too salty. The linguine was salty and the clams were salty. It also had too much butter. I mentioned to David to let the chef know that the dish was too salty. He said OK and left. My nephew's meal was OK. He liked the salmon special that he ordered but contemplated asking for the salmon to be cooked a little bit more well done. He opted to not do that and instead take it home and prepare it the way he likes it. He ordered a side of macaroni and cheese as well but didn't like it too much so also decided to take that home to add his favorite seasonings. Based on my experience at the restaurant tonight, I am rating this visit as a 3. The food did not stand out. The dishes, particularly my dishes, could have used some improvements: however, the scenery is absolutely beautiful.

We told them that we had just gotten married (at the synagogue in Charlotte Amalie 4 hours earlier) & she was so excited to be in charge of our experience. She made wonderful food and drink recommendations and was happy to take pictures of us. She added so much to an already great meal. Now to the food. My husband ordered the soup of the day, a lobster seafood chowder with bacon. Very lobster forward with large chewy chunks of moist lobster meat. Then we ordered the surf & turf to share. It was a double stuffed lobster (Caribbean lobster stuffed with a lobster "crab" cake), fluffy mashed potatoes, & an arugula salad. The turf we chose (you can pick from any of the steaks they offer) was a waygu skirt steak with a garlic bacon butter sauce. We also ordered a side of bourbon bacon Brussels sprouts. We finished up with the crème brûlée. We kept looking at each other in disbelief throughout the meal. "Can you believe how good this is?!" all over our faces. Be sure to book dinner around sunset, because you will not find a better sunset anywhere on the island. It's truly magical. This is where Christy shined again. Not only did she take us outside to a prime photo spot and take pics for us, she pointed out the islands we could see from the restaurant. I could not recommend this restaurant more. Our server was pleasant and efficient. The resort itself includes a beautiful ocean-sized pool and outdoor bar. The positives: The resort is peaceful, the food is excellent, and the rooms are clean, renovated, and comfortable. While there aren't beach chairs because there isn't necessarily a traditional sandy beach, the pool sits so close to the ocean that we didn't miss the sand at all. Hearing the waves while lounging by the pool was more than enough. The negatives: Shower water was lukewarm at times, and housekeeping service is only provided every three days, which may matter for longer stays. Who this place is perfect for: If you're looking for a long weekend where you relax by the water, read a book, and eat and drink without leaving the resort, this is absolutely the place for you. If you're more into exploring and adventuring around the island, renting a car is recommended. Helpful tips: * VI Hail is the local rideshare app (similar to Uber). * There are two dining areas on site. * Breakfast is served by the pool starting at 7am. * Lunch is served poolside starting at 11am. * Happy hour runs from 3-5pm at the main-level hotel bar. * The poolside restaurant turns into a Japanese-inspired steakhouse at 5pm--highly recommend. It also features live music. * For casual meals (pizza, salads, handhelds), visit the main-level bar and courtyard. * Bottled water is $1. * Book directly through the hotel's website to receive breakfast vouchers for your stay. Our stay: We stayed Wednesday through Sunday and didn't have to leave the resort once. There are hiking trails close to the hotel, and a 20-minute walk due east will take you to Jack Bay, a popular snorkeling spot. Final thoughts: Grapetree Bay Resort is no-frills--don't expect a chic or lively scene--but if your idea of a perfect vacation is sunshine, a pool steps from the ocean, great food, and the sound of waves crashing, this place is absolutely worth booking. We will be back!
