Dixie Lee has been one of the best bakeries in this area since I was a boy. David Burke has been my friend just as long (over 50 years now). Chef Burke helped elevate Dixie Lee and we all get the benefits. Each and every offering is top notch! The use the best ingredients and make everything from scratch. The must haves for me are the jelly donuts and the black and white cookies. The buns rolls and breads cannot be matched. The cookies and cakes are phenomenal. Was in Keansburg today and wanted rolls for our lunch. So I stopped in to the Dixie Lee bakery. Always remembered their great products from my time in the burg. I ordered two hard rolls . They looked great. Got home and just now was going to make lunch with them. I have to say so disappointed. I asked for two "hard" rolls and boy did I get them. They were more like day old hard rolls . Instead of being crispy they were rotted it seemed. Completely fell apart, crumbled at touch . No crunch or crispiness and my fingers pushed thru the outside surfaces like going into cardboard. Crumbled and felt so stale under these circumstances had to be at the minimum day old left out dried up rolls. I had heard they went down a bit down the "old" Dixie Lee, but this was embarrassing. Sorry David Burke, I expected so much more from you... I learned my lesson today.. off to J&M where I should have gone to begin with. And it's a shame. 3 yrs ago I was a fan. When i first walked in, I noticed the dingy floor. I think cleanliness is key, especially in a bakery. The shelves were almost empty, and the girl behind the counter was sooooo slooowww. It took 10 minutes to tie 2boxes., n the amount of sting of my box was laughable. The shelves behind the counter were almost empty. No pastries, no cakes, none of this n none of that. Food - display cases we're more than halfway vacant, which is okay if they are actively replenishing the supply. They were not and the choices were limited. Service - no upbeat personality, person was trying to do something else other than look up and say " Hi, how can I help you....Welcome in!". Ambiance - below average interior aesthetic. No photo ops, dull colors, charmless. Now for my actual personal experience: I arrived at this bakery with four 5 year olds who looked forward to choosing from the decorative sugar cookies that are individually wrapped and sold out of the right display case. We ordered 2 decorative individually wrapped sugar cookies, 3 chocolate covered pretzels ( all different varieties) and 1 M&ms sugar cookie. The one cookie had hair in it, and the hair was in between layers of icing! We took the cookie back, showed the hair and was told that they aren't truly responsible for the issue since this cookie isn't actually made by this establishment. Not a good answer. I'm wondering what else is outsourced without accountability when a customer has a problem. read more

I finally stopped by on the way home from a Sandy Hook visit. Quick detour off RT36. I'm not sure why people complain about the prices, I thought they were quite fair. My mom has loved this place for the better part of 50 years. She always raves about when we lived in New Jersey. This was her favorite place to get crumb buns. Now every time I'm back in town, I stop by Dixie Lee and pick up crumb buns, I pack them and take them back to her in Texas. These are absolutely delicious And a family favorite. read more

I have always had good experiences with David Burke restaurants, so I knew coming in that this place would be good. They're located in Keansburg and they have a parking lot, which makes for a quick in and out. We've tried everything from the key lime pie, cheesecakes, cannoli's, etc. Everything has been delicious and they're prices are so reasonable. Their servings are also pretty big and easy to split between two people - unless you're like me and don't like to share your sweets lol. read more

Dixie Lee is a Keansburg staple, and has only gotten better since it was purchased by Chef David Burke. He's added more variety and higher end pastries to the menu, and altered a couple old staples to improve them. We've been visiting far more in the last year than we ever did before and it's due to the updates that have been made. Love it! read more

I have been to Dixie Lee like many people in the area basically my entire life. Unfortunately since the newest ownership , it is a far cry from the great neighborhood bakery it once was . smaller sizes donuts , lower quality and a fraction to chose from. Seems like they are more interested in pans , and t-shirt sales then thier own baked goods. Today's smaller hard rolls are the only remaining quality the bakery has left in my opinion. Dixie Lee once flourished when it was about the neighbor and the local areas. On sat & Sun mornings especially, if you weren't there first thing , you would be waiting in a line. Now , go when you want , I'd be surprised if thier were two maybe three customers in there with you. Sad read more

The most depressing bakery I have ever visited. I am for sure a spoiled New Yorker who looks forward to a good pastry and a fresh loaf of Italian bread . Unfortunately you can't find this here . They must think bc they put David Burkes name on the door it must be good . That is not the case . I purchased a loaf of semolina bread and I thought I could break someone's neck with it ,it weight about 4lbs I mean I've never seen or felt a loaf of bread so dense in my life. What a shame . Bakery quality of everything we tried was excellent. I was a bit sticker-shocked when a decorated unicorn cookie was 3.75 a piece; but I guess to stay in business for 80 years in NJ....that is how its done? I would have liked to have coffee, but they had a small display area to help yourself, the café looked a bit scaled/dirty, with styrofoam cups (if memory serves me correctly); and only sugar and milk available to alter it. I prefer light cream or heavy cream... so I passed on the coffee. I also was afraid to order anything due to cost. We ordered 1/4 lb of cinnamon rugula, a black and white cookie (more like cake), 2 linzer cookies (crispy), and a huge apple turnover with cream (good but very sweet). Our order was over 17.00. I would like to try their cheesecake, apple crumb cake, and the decorated cookies someday. I don't understand the attitude though from the person helping us. I asked how much things cost, and she treated me like I was a hassle. They should just post signs then. Any time I tried expressing humor it went wasted. Will go back someday... I need to try the above named items. Apologies no pictures, everything was eaten pretty quickly. Good ol' fashioned bakery, needs better coffee and customer service. Purchased a strawberry shortcake for my mother's birthday and it was lacking any strawberry filling just the center of the cake had maybe 2 strawberries inside we shared she fresh strawberries on too they were tasty but wish it had more, for $38 for a cake and two black and white cookies (very cakey)and a M&M cookie (hard as a rock) wasn't worth it in my opinion. The food is fine, it's a bakery and you get just as you expect. Honestly from what I heard, the food is pretty decent and the same can be said about their service and general ambiance. You get taken care of rather quickly. I personally Beckie some of their products tasted better before David Burke took over, but that doesn't mean everything is bad, just that most are different that I remember. I would definitely recommend this place. To try at least once. It is pretty pricey though. read more

This place is not as good as it used to be. Workers inside mocked and acted inappropriately towards myself and my partner when being helped. Also quality of pastries went downhill once ownership changed. I'm sorry if you end up going here because you will be disappointed. I purposely stopped here on a recommendation. The spot from the outside doesn't look very nice but the aroma inside will get you. "Get the black and white cookie". I was thinking how good can it be. It's pretty darn good! It's not quite a cookie though. It's more cake-y. Their selection otherwise was impressive. Everything you could imagine in an Italian bakery. Memories of being a little girl going here with my Daddy and Gramps. Those days they would treat me to a Charlotte Russe. The bakery has a great assortment from breads, cakes, cookies and pastries. They even have macaroons for those who want or need gluten free. I was in a local ITALIAN deli getting a catering order and wanted to get a sheet cake and they referred me to Dixie Lee bakery. Amazing! The cheesecake slices are super creamy and fresh! Staff so accommodating and friendly! I don't know if David Byrne made changes or if it's my imagination but it's so much better than the old bakery. They used to have the best crumb cake but now it's all different. The cake is super dry and no more of those big nice crumbs. They ruined Dixie Lee's crumb cake. The rolls are good. That's all I will return for. I've been going to Dixie Lee for many years. Why did new owner have to change what made the bakery great? There used to be a line out the door, not anymore! I miss the old days of the really good Dixie Lee ! The staff today wasn't the friendliest bunch. While still tasty Dixie Lee pastries are about a third size smaller than they were pre-pandemic: maybe pre-change of ownership. Have been there a couple of times recently & their raspberry pastry was a little more than half the size it used to be. The apple turnover (small size) had maybe a tablespoon of apple filling. If they are going to give you less their price should be less. The times are tough for everyone. I gave them a "3" because the flavor is still there. read more

Strudel was awful. Lacked flavor and tasted like cardboard. Took one bite and threw it out. Rainbow cookies were ok but could use less chocolate coating. I would recommend Normandy Bakery any day over this one. read more
