Mauna Loa is the heritage macadamia brand from Hawai'i, and it was an honor for us to work with Aaron to give back to the community that we are both a part of. Aaron is from Hilo, and worked with the local schools that he went to- Kamehameha Schools in creating the mural. We threw a Mauna Loa x Aaron Kai community event that was extremely well received, and our staff have commented on how the mural has lifted morale at the plant, as it is such a beautiful piece that everyone sees on their way to work. Karl's medium is paper: He creates silhouettes! Yes, like the old-timey profiles you've seen. He's a master at this unusual craft. It's a very quick process--he can create a silhouette in ten minutes or fewer. And it is a great likeness! It is fascinating to watch him snip as he's creating this work of art, cutting so quickly and pausing now and again to make sure that he's capturing the correct features. I wanted to get one of these for the novelty. It was a gift for my significant other, who I thought would love it, and I was right--it is probably the best gift I'd ever given him. My friend mentioned that she was planning to get them annually and at first I thought that might be excessive, but I think I've been converted because it will be a really neat way to document my daughter's growth. I think he makes annual trips to the Chicago area. This year he spent a week here and offered his services at several business throughout the city--I am pretty sure there was even a store on the far south side (think Beverly) that he was at. But even if he doesn't he can do virtual appointments for silhouettes. I can't recommend Cut Arts highly enough. Kathie is absolutely amazing and talented…read more I was trying to prepare a unique birthday gift for my wife, but I have limited experience and knowledge in fine arts. Luckily, I found Kathie on Google and Yelp. She replied very fast and explained everything very clearly. Then, we choose to do a half figure oil painting in 30 * 24. This portrait was worked from my wife's photo. After asking me about my wife's preference in arts, Kathie decided to change the original background (sky and sea) into a more classic one. I could imagine it wouldn't be easy to make two different pictures into one, because the artist had to adjust coloring, lighting and a lot of details very carefully. During the progress of painting, Kathie kept me updated and asked my feedback, until I felt it was perfect. The final work was astounding and totally beyond my expectations. My wife looked elegant in the portrait (of course in person as well) with abundant beautiful details on her hair and dress (which must be very time consuming for the artist, thanks Kathie). Because I lived overseas, Kathie also helped me a lot with packaging and shipping. She tracked the package everyday, until the painting was in my hands with perfect condition. My wife loves this gift very much. It's not only about the skills, but also the passion of the artist that we can tell from the portrait. For me, it was such a wonderful experience in preparing this gift, which I would like to share with all my family and friends.
