We had visited Dr Carothers in the past and had a pleasant experience. So I thought he could see my other children as well, specially made sure they knew about my oldest who has an autism diagnosis. Today we went in for a cleaning and they wanted to do fillings, we agreed on doing that. Dr Carothers was not only very stern with my son but also not gentle at all. Without any warning he stuck a needle in his mouth and it was me who had to keep my son calm and explain what was happening. Never did he act compassionate nor understanding of my son's pain, he was mean and super rude blaming my son and myself for what he considered a not good dental procedure. Diagnosis of any kind or not, I don't think any child or adult likes a needle put in their mouth without any warning. He then left the dental room we were in and never came back, he instead asked his billing guy to tell us he wouldn't continue with the treatment and just left my son sitting in the chair. Again he is numb now and we are left with no options for treatment. We left the office with my son who could be tramatized because of this and they showed not a care in the world for his well being and mental state. Dr Carothers has no business treating children with special needs and without. We will never be back nor would I reccomend this awful dentist. Who lacks compassion and professionalism. read more

My elderly friend was nervous about getting dentures. She asked me to accompany her to her dental appointments. I was nervous too, because, of course, dentures mean all the teeth come out (and frankly I've never known anyone who got completely successful dentures, it always seemed like there are problems). When my friend was called in to her appointment with Dr. Carothers I was asked if I wanted to come with her to "sit in". Well, I hadn't expected that, but my friend seemed relieved so I sat in a chair and watched while Dr. Carothers gave my friend a lot of novocaine and one-by- one extracted ALL her teeth. (A most unusual experience). Dr. Carothers was an absolute expert at this. It all went smoothly and at the end he put in her new (temporary) dentures. He was very kind and efficient. I wound up switching from my Dentist (who was retiring) to Dr. Carothers after I witnessed all this. My friend had a perfect outcome and everything Dr. Carothers has fixed for me has been successful. I am so surprised to read any negative reviews of Dr. Carothers. I can only think that having dental work can be a (legitimately) emotional ordeal. I can only speak to my own interactions with Dr. Carothers. He is the most polite and professional dentist I've ever known. read more

Dr. Carothers exceeded expectations. My right, lower incisor cap needed to be replaced. He replaced the old cap with cubic zirconia, which is so strong you can't break it with a hammer. He showed me how the left lower incisor had lines indicating it was beginning to fracture. Sure enough. A couple months later, the left lower incisor cap fell apart. So I went back to Dr. Carothers to have that cap replaced. It's obvious to me that my previous dentist used an inferior material. Dr. Carothers who trained at Loma Linda University has gone beyond the norm to give me the best of the best. As as a scientist, I know the quality of a Loma Linda University education. LLU is the source of numerous quality published studies and seeing their plaques on his wall silently speaks of his excellence. His office staff are personable and make me feel very comfortable. Copay is easy and reasonable. My grandfather was a dentist, so I know a little bit about dentistry. In my 66 years, Dr. Carothers is the best dentist I've ever been to. read more

Dr. Dave saved my teeth! I've got my mother's "smile" -- that is to say, she had terrible teeth, and was in dentures before she was 30. Even with rigorous daily dental hygiene, keeping my teeth has been a challenge. With so many fillings I've had over the years, I can hardly make it through a metal detector. Technically speaking, "Dr. Dave" is the best dentist I've had -- and I speak from experience. Beyond that, he is compassionate and turns dental terror into delightful dentistry. Dr. Dave explained my treatment plan incredibly well. I have been putting off quite a bit of dental work since it wasn't causing immediate pain (although it was beyond cosmetic work). I understand why certain steps are more important to take care of in the short term and why some of them can be put off for a few months while I get the funds together to do it. David Carothers is a quack and a con-man. I went to get my amalgam fillings replaced with composite fillings, and he billed me $900 claiming he replaced one of my crowns. I never got a crown replaced and he tried to gaslight me into believing I did. I'm pretty sure I would know if I'd had a procedure like that done in MY OWN MOUTH. He was just trying to get more money out of me. He yelled at his assistant in a really abusive manner. I had to have the fillings re-done because he did such a terrible job. His amalgam filling removal precautions were...nothing...even though he claims to "safely remove" mercury. I would never return to this dentist and would warn anyone considering going to him to find someone else. read more

Too bad there isn't a zero stars option. Dr. Carothers is a complete a$$hole. He should not be in practice. My family went to him for several years. I kept ignoring warning signs that he was so terrible, because of my own dislike of looking for new practitioners. He removed all my husbands mercury fillings, but the replacements rarely fit right until a second or third visit to have high points filed down, the last one still sometimes gives him problems, but he won't go back. I have had good teeth most of my life, but when I informed him that a cavity I had hadn't began to hurt yet, something I though he should know to aid his diagnosis, his response was to jam his pick deeply and destructively into the cavity until it hurt badly, then told me, it will start hurting. I felt assaulted, but didn't leave because my husband was still having his fillings done. My daughter was a teen with her wisdom teeth coming in. While he admitted that she had plenty of room for her wisdom teeth, he kept trying to schedule her for a wisdom teeth extraction, after my daughter repeatedly told him and his office staff she wanted to keep her wisdom teeth, and they had fully grown in and were painless. Dr. Carothers seemed to think all teens own him the profits of a wisdom teeth extraction. The final straw was as he was giving my daughter an exam, and she had once again told him she wanted to keep her wisdom teeth, he quietly said, "I'll just let them rot, then I can take them out". His plan was to not treat my daughter's wisdom teeth if they have a cavity, but let cavities develop so he can pull her wisdom teeth. Dr. Carothers is abusive and an all around terrible person. As a Dentist he is more concerned with making money then treating patients, and does a rather slipshod job for top dollar. Be warned and stay away from this dentist. read more

I had an emergency dental repair that happened over the weekend. I call at 8 am Monday morning and got an appointment for the afternoon. I needed some major repair work, the Dr. accessed the situation, came up with a solution and I was out of the 2 hours later. I expected several trips to handle the situation . Weird place...and not in a good way. The dental assistant working on me was insanely hyper, thus no comfort factor at all. The fillings they did... the shape of the filling does not really match my bite. Also got a weird call from them the next day. I thought it was to check on my progress, but instead they asked if I had paid with cash or credit card. Plus bad dental work. Lady at front desk is super awesome, and the facilities are nice. I had a horrible experience here. I went initially for the quick crowns, but it turns out they break pretty easily and they won't cover the cost of the replacement unless you come in every 6 months for a cleaning...wish they at least mentioned that beforehand. Other dentists stand by their work for 5 years, no strings attached. Another $1000 for a new one when the 1st one was not even 2 years old. What an outrage! read more

I thought for sure I was going to need an extraction and probably a crown. I had explained my concerns over the phone and they blocked out enough time to fix the tooth during the first visit "if they could". I know my regular dentist would have made two or three appointments out of my problem. Carothers fixed my tooth then and there in the initial visit. Most dental offices would have made you go through a lot of rigamarole. Dr. Carothers was super efficient and kind. I am grateful and I'm switching over to him 100%. read more

The worst dentist and staff I've ever been to. He pulled my 2 front teeth and promised I would love the new teeth he was going to add to my existing partial. The 1st try he made them way too small, then he tried to add lenght to them with putty or something while they were in my mouth, he had to heat/light cure them and burned my gums terribliy, never saying word. 2 days later the excess putty just flaked off. By the 4th try, he was very mean, avoided me, put me through unnessary impressions, yuck! He tried adding soft plastic inside the partial and that fell out too. he finally redid them completely, made me wait two plus hours for them. They came back the 5th time looking like buck donkey teeth! I was so mad by then I gave up. They said they stood by their work, and it was guarandeed, FOR WHAT? Junk? So if you want horrible treatment and made feel small and stupid by the dentist, go ahead. I never did go back, I went somewhere else when they hurt so bad I couldn't stand it! I gave them over $400.00 plus they got my insurance for some $1,300.00. For just two buck teeth. Then the teeth cleaner guy was a total loser! He talked the whole time, made a couple swipes with his polisher and called it good! OMG, how horrible. Nightmare for sure! read more

I love Dr. Dave! He gave me a fantastic smile (something I always wanted) and was a straight shooter from the get go. He also took on a half completed orthodontic case when I moved from another state- and it was VERY difficult to find a dentist willing to do this (he also did not charge me much to do so). I have had SO many dentists over the years because, genetically speaking, my teeth are trash. Every experience I have had here (same as my husband) has been positive. I will always go to Dr. Dave. Dentists are expensive. I did not notice that Dr. Dave was more than other dentists and I was satisfied with the work. In fact, they took 100 dollars off my first cleaning as a new patient and same for my husband and gave me a credit for referring him. My insurance pays for most of it but if you don't have insurance any dentist is going to be expensive. They discuss the costs before doing the work so its not like the final bill was ever a shocker. They are ALWAYS on schedule and I have never had to wait. The hours are not the best as they are closed at 4:30 and Friday's but they have early AM appointments which is good enough for me. Rob cleans my teeth and really takes his job seriously. Sarah at the front desk is super nice and Rae in the financial department is too. It's a very positive environment to be in. Not sure who the hyper assistant is they are talking about....maybe she doesn't work there any more? I know everyone in the office....there was an orthodontic assistant who was really funny but I did not think she was hyper. I thought she was funny (perhaps she is not some people's cup of tea?) AND she was SPOT ON. To this day she is the only person to get a top and bottom impression completely right on the FIRST try. And having the mold with the goo shoved in your mouth more than once sucks. read more

Dr. Dave took time to care for my boyfriend's terribly infected tooth by coming in on an emergency basis, removing the tooth and getting the prescription for antibiotics straight to our pharmacy. Also, Dr. Dave checked in on my boyfriend daily to ensure the infection was abating and the gum was healing correctly. This is more care than any dentist has ever extended to me, so I appreciate him making my boyfriend's experience as painless as possible. Dr. David N. Carothers, DDS. The finest dentist I have ever had. I found him after MUCH research into finding the best holistic dentist in the Portland Area, and my experience over the last few years has been amazing. I now have dental insurance that is not accepted at his office so I reluctantly go for my annual cleanings and check up elsewhere, but if anything needs to be done, even though it ends up costing more, I go running back to Dr Dave. I do not trust anyone else with my teeth. I just had to have a crown put on yesterday and it cost more than if I went with the dentist who does my cleanings, but it was worth every extra dollar. really. you get what you pay for with Dr. Dave. the highest quality work with state of the art technology. Do NOT go to this dentist! Dr Carothers was our family dentist until my husband had crowns done that broke a year after Dr Carothers put them on. I also had work done by him and was told by another dentist that the work he did needed to be fixed. Another family member had several infections and had to have surgical procedures done and new root canals by a specialist to remedy them due to his shoddy dental work. I used to go here, for a short time anyway. They wont stop sending me mailers. They didn't give a damn about my families care when we lost income due to my son's childhood cancer. They didn't give two bits. The cost of this place is the highest you will find around town. You will hear a great story of how they go to another country to help folks but they do it on your back as they charge you the premium for your care (nothing wrong with this provided you know it in advance). I have asked several times to be taken from the mailing list but hey keep sending me crap so they must want my review. The work done by Dr Carothers was standard, nothing special, let me be clear it was not bad work it was simply the same work one might expect from a dentist that is proficient, nothing special. The office staff did not seem to care a bit for the personal struggles, let me be clear that I did not look or hope for free care however when my son needed work I did ask about any sort of low income discount and was told briskly NO. That is fare though contrary to the ideals they present when they tell you about their aid trip to help low income and poverty folk (I know we are Americans so we must have new cars and tons of money). It seems we are the wrong ethnicity in the wrong country to receive even a moderate discount on services that go beyond the insurance we had. They will gladly turn you on to a finance company. Well that was all some time ago and now we are recovered and insured. I would NEVER take my children to this practice and I strongly urge you to stay away from these hypocrites. I would never return myself as I have found much better care at other practices. It is fare to say that you want to fit your practice but in this case it goes beyond. If I am able to turn even one person from this nasty practice then I am satisfied. STAY AWAY from these people. read more

It's a case of right hand meet left - they don't know what they're doing, the communication between them and the dentist is awful, and they treated me really, really disrespectfully. He was a very mean dentist. I asked to have my root canal extracted because it is infected under the gum and I've suffered from lots of health problems so I wanted to rule it out. He insisted it didn't need to be pulled, even though infected, noxious-tasting liquid seeps out of it on a daily bases. He said it needed to be "sealed," which is absurd considering you can't seal a living organism. He lied and told me he removed the crown and replaced it. I was there, I knew what he had done, which was place a small bit of composite on one side of the tooth. I would've known if he had removed the crown! He then charged me $900 for this procedure, which was less complicated than getting a normal filling. Secondly, I'm being charged for a bill I already paid. Thirdly, he removed my mercury fillings without using the proper protocol despite the fact that he claims to be a mercury-free dentist.
