You wonder why there are only reviews from 2 years ago? Because he probably has had all his patients leave. I have never had to deal with a more unprofessional, least attentive and more UNSYMPATHETIC neurologist in my entire life. To sum it up - I had a very traumatic experience that led me to fall on my face, end up in the ER, end up with stitches in my forehead and a splint on my wrist. All due to medication that he provided me and no information on side effects before taking it. So... due to his lack of communication(which is a norm for him) on my way to the ER I called his office, no answer. Then called again to only have his front desk say we will relay your message. This happen 3 more times, which resulted in me calling 5 times, while I am in an emergency situation and my neurologist who knows of my epilepsy condition has still not returned my call. Finally the NEXT DAY, I call AGAIN and the front desk woman says oh yes, he should be calling you. I find out Dr. Scharf is on vacation. He has no on call doctor, no emergency line to reach out. Nothing. He says he will send my records over so I can get in to see someone. That didn't happen. I had to figure it out all on my own. And still, 3 and half weeks later - I have still not heard from him. So, if you want a neurologist who ACTUALLY cares, takes the time to pick up the phone, tell u about the side effects and remember your medical history - DO NOT go to Dr. David Scharf. read more

After seeing many absolutely terrible neurologists over the past 10 years I was happy to be able to find Dr. Scharf. I was in search for a neurologist who was a provider for a new preventative migraine medication that's just been released. I was referred to him directly the the medication's website. I was sick and tired of going to neurologist after neurologist where they barely listened and kept prescribing me the same medication that I said I had no intention of taking due to the side effects. Such a relief that Dr. Scharf actually listened to my concerns and made me very hopeful that as soon as the medication becomes available I will be a great candidate. The 5 star reviews of Dr. Scharf are spot on. I found him via the Aetna website, noticed he was one of the few doctors with high ratings on Yelp, and decided to give him a try. I'm so glad I did. I've dealt with migraines since I was a child, and was starting to feel hopeless trying medication after medication, to try and control them. Dr. Scharf is one of the most thorough, compassionate, and knowledgeable doctors I have ever been to. Instead of sending in a nurse to get your information, and bouncing between rooms of patients with only a quick glance at your paperwork, Dr. Scharf actually spends the time to go through your information with you, and address your concerns. He is well-versed in homeopathic remedies, and makes lifestyle change suggestions, instead of just blindly doling out prescriptions. He takes your concerns seriously, and is willing to work closely with you to determine a treatment plan. I never feel rushed, or that he is dismissive of any concerns I have, which means a lot to someone with a persistent "invisible" illness like migraines. I really can't say enough good things about Dr. Scharf. He is just an all-around stellar doctor, and I highly recommend him. read more

I especially liked that dr scharf adjusted the tempo and level of scientific discussion to meet my level of inquiry. More specifically, I wanted to talk about things like the mechanism of supplementary magnesium and the classes of triptans--and not straightforward obvious things like lifestyle and diet changes I had made long ago. It was clear to me that he wasn't afraid to talk science with me and that he knew his way around nutrition and neuroscience. I found Dr. Scharf through my insurance provider. I did a quick Health Grades check, scanned a few reviews and called the next day. I spoke with the receptionist, who was very compassionate and kind. When I explained my situation, she got me in for an appointment in less than I week. I had always put my hope and faith in doctors. However,over the past year, I had seen four psychiatrists (my issue deals with medication side effects) who were dismissive, judgmental, didn't know how to treat me, or quite simply didn't want to treat me. By the time I came to see Dr. Scharf, my hope in doctors was dwindling. When I had to repeat my story for what feels like the 75th time, Dr. Scharf didn't raise his eyebrows in judgment. He listened and he took notes and he asked me questions to clarify to make sure he was understanding the sequence of events. When he said virtually word-for-word what I had been telling the previous four doctors only to fall on deaf (or judgmental) ears, I started to cry. I just said, "Thank you. Finally a doctor who gets it." Ultimately, Dr. Scharf had to refer me out to a neuropharmacologist, who he knows personally. I was referred by another physician to Dr. Scharf to get a nerve study - to poke, prod and shock me to see how my nerves are doing. I've been through this once before and had a terrible experience, so I walked in with poor expectations and agitated. Dr. Scharf started on time, was friendly, professional, with excellent bedside manners and made me feel as comfortable as possible while conducting the test. It went much better than my experience with another neurologist. What I appreciated most is that he is an honest man with integrity, and sometimes patients don't like hearing the truth from a doctor but this kind of honesty and professionalism works for me. Is Scharf on the insurance company payroll? Had to see him twice for a workers comp case to be the so called 'fair and neutral' doctor. He spent less than 5 min with me, discounted my injuries which have been ongoing for 5 years since the accident. My life completely changed and not in a good way. He rushed through telling me I 'looked' ok...??? I have a brain injury! His report was a regurgitation of other doctors' reports since he didn't take time with me....clearly NOT neutral or fair. After going to several specialists trying to figure out the source of my health issues, I had forgotten what it is like to interact with kind, patient, caring doctor! Dr. Scharf was everything that you would look for in a doctor. He took his time, he was genuinely concerned and he was the first doctor to say "I believe you" which was so reassuring since I have questioned myself at times knowing something is wrong, but getting no answers. His front office secretary is also so sweet and helpful. I only wish he was a Rheumatologist so that I would have him as my main specialist. read more

This is not for the doctor. It is for his office. My husband had an appointment for over a month. My husband was in need of seeing a Neurologist. He waited a month to get in even with an urgent referral. He was told that his appointment time was 5pm on Monday. When he got a confirmation call the secretary never said the time, just confirming for Monday. He couldn't call back till Monday as the office was closed. On Monday my husband calls reconfirming and they say it was for that morning and he missed it. They couldn't reschedule him anytime soon and very very unhelpful. read more

Dr. Scharf was very professional and did a very thorough exam. He spent about 35 minutes with me. He diagnosed my problem and said I did not need blood work, x-rays, MRIs, or a nerve conduction study. I was very pleased he didn't make me pay for tests I didn't need. He told me it will take a few months for the nerve to heal but if it got worse or things changed I should come back. He actually saw me earlier than my scheduled appointment time because I was early and the person before me canceled. read more

After many neurological issues (degrading eyesight, pruritus, leg spasms), I made an appointment with Dr. Scharf to hopefully find a resolution. Dr. Scharf is the first neurologist I had seen for these issues, so had very high hopes. At my appointment, he basically made me walk a straight line, touch my nose, and sent me on my way (telling me he doesn't believe it's anything to be concerned about/no long term issues). ONE MONTH LATER....I come to find out I have a compressed nerve and LYME DISEASE. As a neurologist, I feel like Dr. Scharf should have been able to diagnose these issues (especially since 1) he's from the east coast 2) my primary actually ended up diagnosing LYME). I wasted time not treating this disease due to no diagnosis made my Dr. Scharf. Time is EVERYTHING when dealing with Lyme. I did not get any blood tests, no nerve conduction studies, not even an MRI offered to me. I understand not wanting to "waste" patients money when they do not in fact have major medical issues, but I DO. I will never again rely on Dr. Scharf to save my health. Another doctor quickly ordered the necessary tests and saved my life. read more

Dr. Scharf is everything that a doctor should be and more. A lot of the new doctors will simply tell you "I don't know" and try to get rid of you when they encounter a case that's not straight forward. Dr. Scharf is an excellent listener and exudes confidence and knowledge. From the moment that you enter his office, you feel his compassion and empathy. Only cash/checks?! I called to schedule an appointment here, and they gave me one over two weeks away. I've been having severe migraines for months, so even hearing the two week wait was horrible. However, with neurologists I'm sure that's common. I waited the full two weeks, then the day before my appointment I received a call from the office. They left a reminder voicemail of my upcoming appointment. At the END of the voicemail, the woman slipped in that the office only takes cash or checks. She rushed through telling me this information. So not only did they fail to inform me of this BEFORE my appointment and waiting, but she just quickly tried squeeze it in to a voicemail like she didn't want me knowing. I have an HSA bank card for all of my co-pays, and the money on that card comes directly from my paycheck. Naturally I would not want to pay out-of-pocket with lots of money already on this card. I have never heard of a practice doing this, and I can't believe they wouldn't warn patients before the long wait period of scheduling an appointment. Very unprofessional and rude. Now I will be living for another month because of the holidays with my migraines to see another doctor. read more

Dr. Scharf is the most patient doctor I have ever been to. Whereas most doctors are hasty and try to quickly get you out of their office, Dr. Scharf is the opposite. He spent a great deal of time with me on my first visit patiently listening to my symptoms. Then, he even spent time with me on an unscheduled drop-by to explain my MRI results. I had just stopped by the office to pick the films up from him after he had already spoken to me about them on the phone. But was willing to go over in even more detail with me. I had a nerve conduction test today which is not the most comfortable procedure to have done in a doctor's office. What a great Doctor! I made an appointment after reading the reviews. Just saw Dr. Scharf today. He is excellent! He spent so much time with me, and patiently listened to my lengthy explanation of symptoms. He is a wealth of knowledge, yet so humble. Dr. Scharf's staff is...amazing. They are knowledgeable and very helpful. They spent time fully answering my questions in layman's terms so that I wasn't left scratching my head wondering what I just heard. They revealed direct consultation pricing information up front instead of trying to lure me into the office with phrases like, "It depends on what you need or what we find." They willingly gave contact information about the imaging lab they use so that I could call the lab myself. Dr. Scharf uses an imaging lab that has amazingly fair pricing, and the lab fees include a written report and a face-to-face consultation with the lab technician. Dr. Scharf's office is great for many reasons, but it's especially great if you haven't met your insurance deductible or if you have no health insurance at all. read more
