I started seeing Dr. Shu probably around 3 1/2 years ago for an issue that popped up in my elbow. Like a lot of guys in their 20's, I hadn't seen a doctor in almost a decade. It just never occurred to me. I called around to a few places, and (luckily), Dr. Shu was able to see me that day. Since that first meeting, Dr. Shu & I have established a very positive doctor/patient relationship. He's helped me find specialists who have helped me diagnose health issues that I'm happy to have figured out at a young enough age to be able to do something about them. His staff is courteous and helpful, both on the phone and in the office. The thing I really appreciate about Dr. Shu is that he has a conversation with you. He listens and allows you to bounce ideas off of him. I'm the type of guy who does research, or at least attempts to, before going in to see the doctor. He's upfront with what's true and what's nonsense, as far as what I'm reading on the internet. He lets you get your words out without interrupting you, and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. And if he's not completely familiar with something, he's not afraid to get on his computer and re-familiarize himself on the issue. This, to me, is much better than somebody maintaining that they know anything and everything in their given field. Dr. Shu is a smart doctor. He listens to you, and creates and ongoing dialog concerning health issues you have. He makes sure to talk to you in a way that makes things make sense. And he's available in a timely manner. I've been seeing Dr. Shu for over 10 years. I found him thru yelp and he does not disappoint. Recently I've had some back pain and he printed me some stretches that help make the pain go away! He is a native San Franciscan went to Lowell. There is even free parking in the lot, and tons of neighborhood 2 hour street parking. I would stay away from David and Sutter Health in general. This place is a scam and these people are corrupt. Let me tell you why. My appointment felt really rushed and it didn't seem like David cared at all. All he did was refer me to a bunch of specialists and didn't bother to diagnose me. In fact he even forgot to take my blood pressure. That is a very standard procedure doctors do to all patients. The bill came out to be $400 for literally a 10-15 minute appointment. Who does he think he is to be charging so much and all he did was direct me to specialists for very common issues that general doctors should be able to answer. Does he think he's my lord and savior Jesus Christ for charging $400 for a 15 minute session? They will try to do anything and get you to agree to anything so that they can bill your insurance more. While I was sick in China, I called Dr. Shu's office (thank you google voice) to get some advice on what medicines to take while I was in Shanghai. You can't really trust the hospitals in China since they are not as safe as the US ones. He called back during his lunch hour to tell me exactly what antibiotics to get and how to take them. Mostly the rating downgrade is for the 'service'. And unfortunately recently it's the care from the main person: the PCP. Elderly mother called to ask if the doctor would be able to call in medication for extreme congestion and coughing. Message was taken by impatient and unfriendly woman. The entire day passed (this was MLK holiday 2017 yet they were in the office in the morning) with no follow up call from either staff or doctor. Both my mother and I separately tried contacting their office to find no answer-early dismissal due to holiday probably. So we called the after hours number whereby a very droll man's voice on a recording tells one to page the doctor by punching in one's tel. number. I did this as my mother is not familiar with the pager procedure. Was 4 pm. No return call. Getting anxious as we had also checked with drugstore if any meds were called in and they said no. So by 6 pm tried the pager again then doctor called immediately after & spoke with my mother. She asked if anyone passed on the message to him; he said 'yes' & that he had already called in the medication! Would have been nice to have been notified by their office of this so that we didn't have to worry and do the run around. Of course, the drugstore was faulty for not notifying my mother too. But the initial fault lies with the doctor's office. Well, following day around 9:30 a.m. there's a message from either the same or another indifferent sounding staff member from the doctor's office. Why? To let my mother know that the doctor called in the medication! A whole 24 hours late. Why didn't they notify her before leaving early the day before? Really terrible. I'm sorry. But I have to agree with Beth K. about the front desk staff. Both my mother and I have been on the receiving line to their indifferent/unfriendly attitudes. Just walking in the office to the window to check in they always seem mad when they see us. I do know that they are very cheerful and friendly with other patients though so they have empathy just that they select who to project it unto. That is unfair and very unprofessional IMO. If a doctor's staff do not like certain patients for whatever personal reasons then they ought to quit simply put. Btw, the office and the entire medical building is cheaply maintained & decrepit. For instance, a few of the exam rooms are windowless with old carpeting & fixtures including the exam bed which at least two are rusty and seem to be dated from the late 1970's. Update 4/4/2017: My mother has been hospitalized twice within a month's time (Mid-March now beg. of Apr.). Has been diagnosed not only with pneumonia but heart failure. Symptoms of both are similar & truly if she was sent for at least an x-ray since months ago when she complained of the swelling in her lower legs & feet this would have been addressed. Now her condition has worsened & care given too late based on a dr. who continually told us that her continuous coughing and phlegm were due to allergy & that the swelling was due to her diabetes. So wrong. Thankfully she has been changed to a caring, proactive PCP who understands seniors' health issues. Really if one is a millennial (as many of his 5* reviews seem to suggest) who has either minor health issues or none whatsoever then this dr. will work for you. Because if you're pretty much healthy, hey, there is not a thing he needs to do except to appear that he truly cares when this is furthest from the truth (want to test this theory then get as ill as my mother). And like one of the 5* reviewers stated he's great at discussing non-health matters like traveling to New Zealand. Or if like another reviewer you need to play a game of badminton he's your doctor. But if you're sickly and/or elderly or have what seems to be the beginnings of major illnesses/conditions I do not recommend or you'll get worse and I do mean the ultimate in 'worse' (as in near death). Obviously the 'Funny' ratings are from disgruntled staff. You know that that only confirms the 1* rating. And if you think it's cute that you've awarded a 'Funny' rating to my review concerning a loved one who almost died due to lack of proactive care then I wish the same for your loved ones. Maybe you ought to feel what others have gone through due to lack of your carelessness then come back and let us know. In fact, I challenge you to contact me personally & let me know just how absolutely funny it is for you & your family. And frankly this practice is quickly going downhill with more patients abandoning it. Now that is absolutely funny! Personally I like Dr. Shu and really wanted find a primary care physican for the long run since I left One Medical. I saw him twice and when I walked out the 2nd time, I knew I wouldn't return. As others have said, he is personable and humble. I always like a doctor to introduce themselves as "first name, last name" not Dr so and so although I respect their position and would not call them by their 1st name. The 1st visit was for a comprehensive physical. It went well and he even drew the labs himself. That's very impressive and a real time saver. The 2nd visit was for a pre op physical and that where things went wrong. I called and got VM so left a specifc message with the date of the surgery and request that I be given a couple of times to choose from in order to eliminate phone tag. The 1st call back gave me an appointment the day after my surgery. I called back and got VM again so left another message saying that wouldn't work since it's a post op date then gave the surgery date with request for a pre op date. The 2nd message gave me an appointment on the day of the surgery. I was finally able to talk to someone and expressed the frustration of this and got a very snippy attitude. Honestly all she had to do was apologize and say "they are very busy", "it's hard to hear a VM" or something to that affect and that would be that. I told Dr. Shu all of the above and he defended her with numerous excuses not the least of "I wasn't there to hear what was said". Of course my messages were recorded so he could have listened to them. He also said there was nothing he could do and would I like to talk to her? I don't think so-that's his job. Again all he had to do is apologize for her and not go into defensive mode as I felt that he cared more about his staff (and not having to confront them) than he cared about me as a patient. I don't complain, am not a prima donna, and get along with people but to get attitude at a doctors office is not OK. By the way the med techs are really nice and very attentive but the front desk leaves a lot to be desired. You can stand there with no one greeting you until it's convenient for them. All it takes is eye contact and a smile if they're that busy. In the meantime I found a new PCP who I love, is much more thorough and has attentive office staff. read more

When I first went to Dr Shu, he was great. He's a smart, nice guy and I always felt like he listened. I recently moved and before I moved, I confirmed with his office, my insurance and my new pharmacy (in a different state) that he could transfer my Rx's for the first month until I found a new Dr - which isn't something anyone can do overnight. All set, no problem, we'll take care of it. I think everyone understands that you're on medication for a REASON, not for fun. It's been over a month and I call at least 3x a week and have not once received a phone call back, and have been hung up on by his office multiple times. When they do happen to answer the phone (perhaps 3 times in the last month), they went from "we will take care of it", to " we ask him all the time, but he's not doing it", to "he refuses to do it". That's great, my medical issues are flaring up because my Dr decided not to be a human being and appreciate the fact that he should be respectful of consistency of med's. Seems to me that the Hippocratic Oath means nothing to him.... Thanks a lot, Dr., not that I feel you deserve that title. read more

I found Dr. David Shu's office from yelp many years back. I'm glad that I did. He is patient and kind. He listens patiently to everything I have to say. I went in for a physical and he personally calls his patients back with the results. Like the other reviews say, he does his own blood draws which saves me a trip to the lab. Appointments are easy to obtain and I always get a call back when I have questions. They have a web portal and app so I can look up my old labs and compare them to current ones so I know how things are doing. You can even send messages to him and make appointments with the portal. He literally spends 5 mins in the room and gives little information of diagnosis and sends you away with handouts printed from web MD. Also, in one visit no vitals were taken. The last time I went in I was having chest pain. He had his Medical assistant preform an EKG. I was so disappointed that he never returned to the room, instead he had his Medical assistant tell me it was normal. Please do not be fooled by the good reviews!
