This place is horrible. I Went there this past Friday while working at a local high school and really did not know of any other restaurants in the area. I ordered the two piece whole catfish, turnip greens, cheese grits and onion rings, I was going to order their crab bisque but, my waitress advised against it. That should have been my warning shot. The catfish tasted like strong ammonia and the flesh was extremely mushy. Hands down the worst catfish that I ever ate as it did not taste safe at all. I never even tried the Turnip greens as they looked very old and the grits looked no better. Woke up Saturday to extreme stomach pain that the led to 36 hours of bathroom issues that took me out the whole weekend. I don't know what the problem is at this place, but apparently fresh seafood is not on the menu. read more

Good ole southern boys and girls if you want good ole southern food and experience from a place where they are all the time serving with patience and respect for all customers with southern hospitality and wonderful atmosphere and waiting for you to doors open and make sure you're greeted with a smile and great respect to welcome you to a good southern time with their special treatment to go the extra mile for you then this is the time and place for you! I really hope you can come here and see what my family has experienced and come to live it here! Remember not all are perfect but try their very best that should be accounted for by you in every way understanding if you where in their shoes or how if some customers come in thinking they have to have royal treatment well I really really hate it for you cause you just ain't gonna get that nowhere so think about what a good Christian person would treat the situation it even if you're not but just a good person then you should know what kind of person you are if you are picky about what only you want and lash out and then cost that nice waiter or waitress their jobs you then you should know your a customer that deserves to get the same kind of treatment you gave them but worse and then maybe you should start walking with how you're eyes open and how quickly you've been judging others that bend over backwards to get you the best of the best they can for you! Some customers will just complain to get back at someone or please to feed their egos thise are people very much incapable of being able to do so for any other person and only think about themselves!!! David's is just fine for dinner. The locals are there. In fact, there are nothing but locals in Monroeville as far as I can tell. Maybe in Mockingbird season it's different, but "off season" you won't be troubled with tourists. The catfish fillets are undoubtedly local because just north of the area are vast catfish lakes. So I'm thinking that is why David's catfish tastes fresh and delicious. I also remember their iced tea being perfect. (Yes, one can mess up tea). A certain young family member suggested that they should have a drink called a Tequila Mockingbird here, but, none. read more

After seeing their signs all along the highways I thought I needed to stop and try the catfish this time while I'm down south. Cute place-decorations were simple but very fitting. Loved the wooden tables that looked like they had been used for many years...I imagine if those tables could talk they could tell a tale or two. So, on to the food...I ordered the one filet catfish plate that came with two sides; for the sides I chose cheese grits and coleslaw and had to order a side of what they call turnips (it's actually turnip greens and they were delicious.) The sides were all wonderful and I could've eaten my weight in the hush puppies. The fillet was good but a little small. Washed it all down with a 1/2 & 1/2 tea and my day is now complete. YUMMY!! Working in town for the day. Coworker recommended it as there don't seem to be a lot of options, at least for a guy from out of town. Being safe, I stuck with the namesake and had the Cajun catfish platter. Very good. Not too spicy, but full of flavor. Also got a bowl of the seafood gumbo and it was delicious as well. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a good casual meal. I ordered takeout, but the service at the counter was great and friendly. I'll come back when I'm in town again. read more

I'm from Mississippi out of town for work and decided to try this nice little local place from the recommendation of my supervisor. I got the catfish filet platter (2 piece) with Cole slaw, hush puppies and cheese grits. The coleslaw was slightly sweet but delicious. The 2piece catfish platter was well enough for me! The fish was fresh and the cheese grits add as a nice little touch on the side. read more

Delicious! I've never had catfish like it!! And their cheese grits.... yummy! I enjoyed it so much, I returned the next night. I had shrimp the second time. Shrimp was good, catfish was better :) But of course that just depends on personal taste not a lack of quality of the shrimp. Oh and their cole slaw is also great. Its just the right sweetness. Visiting from Australia, David's was recommended to us by some locals. It did not disappoint! I had the steak and it was tender and cooked perfectly. I probably didn't enjoy the sides as much but that might be because I didn't really know what to expect! Quite reasonably priced and friendly if brisk service. My favourite part was just watching and listening- clearly a local favourite made it part of the experience of being in the South for us. read more

There once was this little catfish place just outside Selma, Alabama called Mac's Fish Camp which you paid one price to get in the door and once you were in there they would keep bringing the slaw, whole fried catfish with tails on them, fried catfish fillets and hushpuppies until you said stop. All you could eat and the slaw at Mac's was to die for. The place burned down years ago and they never rebuilt. I have been searching for that slaw and I finally found it here at David's. The 3 whole catfish I ordered were perfect too. I shall never be able to eat catfish anywhere else for I will feel like I am cheating on David's Catfish House. It's that good folks, it's that good. Fortunately, my daughter lives in Ft. Walton Beach, FL and I live in Marion, AL and this is the midway point where we meet to visit sometimes. I will have many opportunities in the future to get my catfish and slaw fix right here at David's and only here. I find it quite amusing that one of the sides you can order here is cheese grits. read more

Walked here from the airport across the street. This place is so friendly! I ordered the fried catfish filets, gouda grits, and fries. Our waitress insisted that we try the coleslaw so she brought us both a free sample. I usually turn my nose up at Cole slaw. It was delicious! I even found myself dipping my fish in it. Oh, wow! This "fish 'n grits" meal was as good as it gets! We were greeted warmly when we walked in and were invited to "sit anywhere you'd like and we'll be right with you." We did - and they were. It only took a minute to choose what is probably the specialty of the house - fried catfish filets. There are several options for sides, but good cheese grits are hard to pass up. Anybody can make French fries, but not everyone can make excellent cheese grits, and David does. Our friendly server immediately returned with our coleslaw before the meal, like a salad is served before the entree. Waverly Wafers were in the table and were the perfect accompaniment to the sweetened-just-right slaw. Before we finished our slaw, Ami was back with the rest of our meal. The generously sized filets were coated perfectly and fried just right. A thick tartar sauce was delicious on top. The grits were thick and smooth and had just the right amount of cheese. It was hard to put the spoon down and not eat them all at once. The hushpuppies were crispy and tender and seasoned nicely. Strategic planning allowed me to save a bite of the grits for the last bit of the meal. We were offered dessert, but we were very satisfied with our meal and decided not to make pigs of ourselves. When you find yourself in Monroeville, do find David's; you will be rewarded nicely with friendly service, comfortable surroundings, and excellent food! read more

I have come two nights Ina row. Here for work and this is the highlight! Catfish and hush puppies are wonderful, fried but don't taste greasy. The coleslaw is great. Cheese grits perfectly seasoned. Not a low calorie meal though. Tonight I'm having crab claws. read more

Whatever you do don't order a steak here. The catfish and seafood are great! However they have a great cut of ribeye but they do not season it and they will not season it even if you ask. My advice to Davids would be to take steak off the menu if you cant get a good seasoned steak. Who in their right mind offers steak on a menu and doesn't know how to cook it. It's an absolute waste of meat not to season it. There is absolutely no place in this town to get a good steak. read more

Called a month in advance and reserved a private room for my father's 80th birthday party. When our party arrived at the designated time we were told the room was being reserved for someone else and they had set our tables together in a crowded area, sandwiched between two other tables with barely enough room to get in and out much less to put up the birthday banner. No one called me to let me know they were doing this so I could have made arrangements elsewhere. Thanks for ruining my father's special day David's Catfish House!!
