Both my sweet and sour chicken and my husbands orange chicken were just classic Chinese food done well. The service was excellent, and our server was so warm and friendly and quick to converse with us about our travels as we were in Utah for a trip this week. I wish I had asked for her name. Very busy, we had high hopes for this restaurant! Homemade Chinese food with huge gyoza that weren't just from the frozen food department at the local club store. Fried and stuffed, steamed? Delicious. The portions for the pan fried noodles were small, not shareable. Left still feeling hungry but spending $75 for no noodle dish, beef broccoli and gyoza and a couple drinks. read more

We went to David's Kitchen last night. The woman hostess was not friendly at all. Asked us if we wanted booth or table, which was in broken English, which is fine. But for heavens sake give us break that it was hard to tell what you were asking of us. We ordered Sesame Beef and Dragon and Phoenix...awful! I don't know what kind of meat they used for the Sesame Beef and the chicken in the Dragon and Phoenix, but holy crap.... When the white rice was the best thing at our table, that says a lot. We will NEVER go here again. When David ran things years and years ago....what a treasure. David....they have ruined your restaurant. Came for an early dinner today with my cousin. Definitely an old school authentic Chinese restaurant feel with the dimmed lights and vintage decor. We ordered the family style meal option for 2 (egg rolls, fried rice, sweet & sour chicken, beef broccoli) the walnut shrimp entree & potstickers for appetizers. I have literally spent years trying to love this place, but I just can't ignore a few issues. My last pick up order included: potstickers $10, egg rolls $6 hot & sour soup - bowl $8 curry chicken $16 kung pao chicken $16 Szechuan beef $16 veggie lo mein $16 One might expect to also receive an adequate amount of white rice to accompany this order, perhaps 3 containers to accommodate the 3 $16 protein dishes. I certainly understand that the lo mein might not include rice as it contains noodles. Ok, fine. However, we received 1 container of rice in total. Considering that 4 people shared this fairly good-sized order, 1 container of rice seemed rather insufficient. So, instead of making a big deal, we cooked our own pot of rice, delaying dinner by another 25 minutes. The following day, we thought we would try the Mongolian beef since we forgot to order it the previous night, so we stopped in and ordered one container ($16) for takeaway. When presented with the prepared entree that was not accompanied by rice at all, we asked about it and reported that we received only one container of rice for 3+ entrees the night before. The answer we received floored us. We were advised that one container was considered to be 24 ounces of rice, and that is intended to serve 3-4 people at 6-8 oz each (volume or weight?). Having never received less than a full rice container per entree from any other Chinese restaurant in SLC, LA, SanFran, Chicago, or NYC, I was stunned by this answer. Considering that rice can be purchased quite inexpensively, it seems like the stupidest thing to chintz out on and probably creates more bad will than many other cost saving methods. But, this isn't the only skimping we encountered. The entrees each had very little flavor. In fact, they are so bland that I wonder if the chef(s) use only enough spice to color a dish, such as the yellow curry, but not enough to evoke the heady experience expected of this style of cuisine. Spicing is a carefully crafted art form in most Asian cuisine, and maintaining a working supply of decent quality, fresh, aromatic spices is not cheap. I'm not talking about salt or msg. I mean everything from ajwain to za'atar. Proper spicing is the basis of the quest for "good" food, whether Chinese, Thai, Indian, or non-Asian dishes such as Mexican, Creole, Italian, Ethiopian, Greek, Lebanese, French, Moroccan, or simply burgers and Buffalo wings. Properly seasoned, hygienically prepared food is what we expect from restaurants. I find it very interesting that my clothes have the odor of spices when I leave a good restaurant, but instead smell of cooking oil when I leave a mediocre restaurant. Leaving David's Kitchen after waiting 20 minutes for takeaway, my clothes reeked of oil. Cleanliness is possibly the only thing more important than flavor, and the Health Department is a great resource for evaluating the hygiene of your favorite restaurants. We ordered 3 combos, BBQ pork and fried shrimp (6). Combos meat to veg ration was overpowered by veg. Shrimp was good but not $8.99 good. BBQ pork was lazy made. Instead of tossing the pork with sauce. They just drench it on top. Also the pork was very dry. This place is good if you live close with no transportation. I was so craving a good Chinese dinner so we opted to try out David's. We were immediately seated (or should I say waved at and pointed to a table). The restaurant was about 60-65% full (plus we found out a group in the back room). Only 2 servers working so we knew to be ready to order as soon as we got the opportunity (we were starving). Our order for 2 was taken as was the table of 2 next to us. Their appetizers came out and then as their food/dinner came out - so did our pot sticker appetizer. Then we waited and waited and waited at least 30 minutes. The table next to us has finished and departed before our 2 dish dinner came out and then they forgot the rice. Food was meh - not really any flavor to it. The sauce was bland. Service was meh too and no one seemed happy or wanted to be there...always abrupt. That is until we paid for our meal and then we got a little smile and thank you. This will be our one and only time at David's. So wanted to love this place that has been around forever. However, I can get so much better at many other great places especially for the price. Dinner (2 entrees with potstickers and 1 fried rice upcharge) with tip was $64. read more

Our go-to order includes: general chu chicken, lo mein, sweet and sour pork chop (not breaded!), walnut shrimp (I only order this when at the restaurant- not my fav for takeout), and 2-4 orders of pot stickers. I can emphasize enough how much I love the potstickers. We love visiting with Lee and Henry, and the rest of the staff is always helpful. I miss the old location behind Gino's, but being able to get a table on the weekend is a solid bonus. read more

Our favorite was the wontons the other food was bland with no flavor at all the kung pao had no color to it just a bunch of peanuts and no colorful veggies the sweet and sour chicken was hard to chew. The potstickers were as good as we were told, and the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Cashew Chicken were delectable, although there wasn't very much chicken in the Cashew Chicken dish. Our to go place is New Golden Dragon, which never disappoints, but we wanted to try a new place for a change after hearing about David's Kitchen. What a disappointment! We ordered four dishes, which usually have distinct flavors, such as Kung Pao chicken or shrimp foo young, for example, but they all had the same flavor...as if the same sauce had been used for all. On top of that the flavors were bland, and the dishes consisted of mostly fillers- bamboo shoots, onions, etc, with very little meat. Will definitely not go back again! read more

I stick to Panda Express usually just because I know what to expect. We decided to try David's Kitchen on a whim. We were seated promptly upon arriving and ordered appetizers immediately. Service was awesome. Food came out quickly and piping hot. The food itself was alright. The potstickers were delicious but the entree was average. Nothing to write home about. I think next time I'll stick with Panda. This place is kind of like a fancy Panda Express. I would recommend trying it out yourself and see what you think. read more
