Fantastic HVAC company. I suspected my 20 year old heat pump was on it's last legs and sure enough when I scheduled a furnace tune up their technician immediately noticed. My unit was leaking and the coolant used in it is no longer being manufactured (due to environmental reasons) so the only feasible option was to replace it. It had basically been running primarily on the elelectric backup heat this whole time. At least the new unit will be more efficient (rated 16 SEER) versus my old one (rated 10 SEER). The federal minimum nowadays is that all heat pumps need to be rated at least 14 SEER. Replacing the furnace is expensive, but I felt comfortable with Davis Modern throughout the whole process. I met with their sales rep, Jim, who is actually an engineer by trade so he was able to answer all of our technical questions about the equipment. Jim is friendly and easy to talk to, and he didn't try to oversell us any products or services. We decided on a Armana brand rated 16 SEER which came with a 10 year warranty overall and a lifetime warranty on the outdoor compressor. He also presented a 14 SEER model (cheaper) and mentioned more expensive models with higher SEER ratings - but that the 16 SEER model is the most popular and bang for your buck. On the installation day, two technicians came to our house and they worked the whole day from 8 am to 3 pm without stopping for food or water! They were very friendly, professional, and courteous. My electric bill BEFORE the new heat pump was about $400-$600 a month in the winter. I'll update my review after a few months to compare my new electric bill. read more

Davis Modern installed a gas water heater for me last Thursday. It is located in a rarely used room. The technicians left a gas valve open which allowed gas to build up over a four day period. This is a dangerous mistake that cannot be overlooked. Cannot recommend. read more

Called them because my furnace was leaking water. Guy came out and said my AC was leaking and the coil was frozen. After injecting dye into the AC he told me the leaking would stop and charged me $400.00. Well the leaking water got worse. Another guy came out the next day and took the panel off of the furnace to find that the drain was clogged. After all that, a salesman comes out to price a new AC. He didn't have the right contracts for the job. So, i never called them back and they filed for a permit with my township after i never called them back. Now my house is being reassessed because of their failures. Don't use them if at all possible. read more

Our experience with Davis has been a complete debacle - from service errors to miscommunication- that was compounded by them selling us a "new" unit that was actually 5 years old but still in the box. We then determined that the duct work they had done was falling apart and was never noticed despite routine maintenance visits by their staff. Go elsewhere! Long relationship with Davis for A/C, furnace, and mini-split. Twice yearly maintenance.

Be weary of promises the sales representative will make as the owner never intends to make good on them. Some call this "sales fluff". Recently used Davis to replace our Central heating and cooling system - after getting quotes from various local vendors, Davis was in the middle and based on the job as it was explained by the sales rep, seem to be exactly what we wanted/needed. When it was time to install the system, it was very, very clear that the installers and sales rep had never spoken about the job, nor did the company intend to make good on promises made by the sales rep during the actual sale. Davis uses an old-style carbon copy form with various checkboxes and lines where the sales rep can write in whatever detail they need however it's clear that the information gathered on this form is only used in the sales process and will never make it to the installers. Also there are items called out on this form that are not going to be part of the install. As you can imagine I spent more time on the phone and writing emails to Davis's owner that in the end, we should've went with the more expensive and more qualified/competent company. Advice if you wish to use Davis Modern, get in writing on Davis letterhead with exactly what they intend to do or "what they are selling you" - lastly if you have gone with Davis or choose too, do yourself a favor and check the model numbers that are installed versus what is shown on your invoice/bill as you may find discrepancies. read more

We just had a new HVAC (furnace and AC) unit installed. The Sales Representative (Jim) was very knowledgeable and most importantly did not confuse us or try to sell us something that we did not need. He met with us on a Monday evening and the unit was installed the following Tuesday (very fast). They sold us a 2 stage Amana furnace and a 1 stage 16 SEER AC unit. The installation team were very professional and cleaned up after themselves. We are very comfortable with a purchase that was over $6 K. We had a couple of questions after the installation was completed and the office was very responsive. The permitting process was transparent. The bottom line is a purchase this expensive is always stressful. The people at Davis are very professional and made the process as easy as possible. We are very happy with their service and our purchase (so far-it is an HVAC unit so the real proof is long term operation and comfort). read more

My electric bill last month was very high last month. I had changed electricity providers and was told that was the problem. To double-check, I contacted Davis Modern, as my previous HVAC company told me they couldn't come for two months. The person who answered the phone and scheduled my appointment was very professional, and the technician who came out was AWESOME. He took me outside to the unit and explained everything he had checked and what he found. The high bill was indeed due to my change in providers, but he gave me peace of mind. In researching HVAC companies after buying my first home, I went with Davis due to their positive reviews and their proximity to my home. I wanted someone to look over my furnace that was operating just fine for preventative maintenance, and provide a quote for a new AC unit as the unit at the property was 21 years old and the electric bills in the summer were reflecting that. Scheduling was a breeze, and the technician on site was very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt very good about the company when the technician left, with the understanding that I would receive a report with recommended repairs to the furnace and a quote for the AC replacement. The furnace was in good shape, but was told the exhaust pipe needed to be updated as it wasn't up to code (single walled instead of double walled). I agreed that it wasn't urgent since it was Feb (AC wouldn't be turned on for a few months), and the furnace repairs were preventative in nature, not urgent repair. The technician understood but assured me I would have the report & quote to me within the next week or two. After a month went by without any report or quote, I called the company to follow up. The receptionist took my message and said she'd follow-up with the technician. I called back a week later, at which point I was told that Davis could not do the exhaust pipe repair and I would need to contact my chimney professionals. They said they were still working on the AC quote and would have that to me in a few days. When my chimney professionals arrived to look at the exhaust pipe, they were surprised by the recommendation as the pipe was indeed double-walled and they didn't recommend any repairs in the short-term (gave heads up on some items that might need replacing in the coming 5 years). When I still didn't have the quote a week later from Davis for my AC, I contacted another HVAC company: Mighty Ducts. This company showed up to my house the day after I called, provided estimates of 3 different options on the spot, and had the new AC unit installed 1 week after that. I could have continued to wait for Davis Heating & Cooling, and calling them to remind them I was waiting - but why do that when another company values my business and relationship more? read more

Tried to get a tankless water heater repaired. Came out once (charged for the visit) have no problem with that. Failed to follow up after 6 mos. Came out again, failed to follow up again after 2 weeks. Came out a third time, parts under warranty, wanted $925 labor to repair. Could not provide an hourly rate. 3rd strike , you're out !! However, the woman that works there is pleasant on the phone (not her fault). They just have trouble hiring qualified technicians apparently. Would not recommend. read more

Converted oil to gas for a duplex in Lansdale - turned it into two zones for separate meters. Davis was fast, professional, and great to deal with. Highly recommend. Long version: researched 15 places, called about 8, had 4 estimates. Davis was the most professional. They explained everything as they were looking around, saying why we would need something and why it was the best choice (in types of model and pros and cons). When we disclosed that another place recommended model XXX system Davis immediately explained why that was overkill and due to the age of our property and pipes it would be costly in the long run. (Particles in the water from old pipes is unavoidable and it would clog the XXX system due to its configuration/setup/type.) Apparently the XXX model rates at 96% efficiency but if something went wrong, the whole system would have to be replaced. And it was costly: $12,000. Davis recommended YYY model, that's rated at about 92% efficiency but it's more common, and parts can be easily replaced instead of the whole system, and at that same cost, can give us two zones instead of one. So that's what we decided to go with. One zone would have been $8,000. During conversion, it turns out our chimney is already lined so they took $500 off the bill. Communication between the office and technicians weren't the best so they showed up thinking it was already zoned for two - they had to buy more pipes. I don't remember if we had to pay extra for that or not. They said it would take 2 days but ending up with 3 days... no big deal, since they tried their best to keep the hot water off for the minimum amount of time. They also drained and removed the oil tank; they clean up after themselves! When it got cold recently we tried to turn the heat on for the first time (besides right after conversion for testing) and it didn't turn on; the second unit's heat turned on just fine. We called them, and they came out within the hour at no charge to fix it. Very professional and timely. It turns out it was the electrical line to the thermostat that's old and didn't work. You don't get professional and courteous service like that much anymore. I would highly recommend Davis to anyone who is looking to convert oil to gas. Our oil bill was about $700-$900 every 3 weeks so I can't wait to see what this winter's bills will be!!! This thing will pay for itself in about 2-3 winters I think! FINANCING: Davis does offer financing. 0% for 12 months was available for me AT THE TIME (don't know by the time you read this lol) but I used my credit card (I had 0% promotional APR for 18 months) so I was able to get the "cash discount" else it'd been a bit higher. A couple people mentioned they called Davis and never got a response. My experience with them was very prompt and timely. I think it's because I got to them before their busy season. My conversion was done end of July/early August. They came out for an estimate the week after I called, sent the estimate over the next day, and worked with PECO for us and we scheduled the conversion less than 2 weeks after the estimate. YMMV if you call them August and on, but hey, it's their busy season. Btw we already had gas lines set up so we saved the PECO fees, about $1,200 I think. Not quite sure why previous owners switched from gas to oil... but we'll take the $1,200 saving haha. (When I was doing research I didn't find much information for oil to gas conversions and which companies are best at this - so that's why I tried to write a detailed review so hopefully it'll help someone else out.) read more

I have purchased several heaters air conditioners and water heaters from Davis Modern H and AC, had ongoing maintenance contracts and had been very pleased with their service, however I purchased a new air conditioner a few weeks ago and it takes 2 hours to cool down each degree. I was told it was because it was 95+ degrees outside but same is happening now that it is 81 degrees outside. My last one cooled much faster even just before it died. Although I am told it had the same capacity as my old one it is very disappointing. read more

Won't hire this company again. My experience started out well with an on-time meeting with the engineer. I felt comfortable after the meeting since he seemed knowledgeable with code and the product he was selling and the installation, explaining it all to me. The crew arrived on time to install a new house heater but as it turned out, unprepared. After 2-3 hours into the the job I inquired as to when it was expected to be finished. The response was that it would be soon. I asked 'what about the chimney liner?'. They didn't know anything about a chimney liner although it was in the contract. Ok, so now it is many hours after the job start and they bring back a chimney liner and install it. Uh-oh, now it's discovered that the previously existing gas fired water heater can't be connected back up to the flue. It was previously sharing the chimney with the house heater but that's no longer possible with the liner. Something their engineer didn't engineer. So now they want me to throw out a working water heater and purchase a new, shorter water heater to solve the (their) problem. The lower floor of this house is occupied by a family with young children. I was glad they weren't home to hear some occasional foul language reverberating through the duct work during the installation. read more

I was delighted when the Davis tech arrived within 90 minutes of my call for a "no ignition" condition of my aging gas heater. Within minutes the tech determined that it wasn't the heater, but a faulty power head for one of the zone valves as the cause. He said he likely had one on the truck, but said "this is an expensive part". I have neither the expertise or the part, so I was happy that heat would soon be working. I expected to pay a premium for parts they need to stock and carry on their trucks. I authorized the work, but must admit that I now feel a little taken advantage of, by being charged $457.00 for a part that I learned is sold for about $100.00. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Power-Head-555-050RP/202270182 If Davis had charged maybe $200-250.00 for the part, they would have gotten a more than fair premium price for a modest solenoid, and I wouldn't have felt spanked. We received an alert from our Nest thermostat that our furnace was turning on and off while heating. Due to the fact that we have an infant, we wanted to get it checked out by a professional. We called Davis and someone came out to fix it wIthin three hours of our call. Dennis was polite, thorough, and explained everything in detail. He also added a picture of our make/model/serial number of our unit so it would be in our account for reference later. I will definitely be using them again if needed! read more

This is the second furnace and central AC system I have had Davis install for me. The installer had to cut my closet door to fit the unit. I have had to call them twice for service and now a third time. Just reviewed my electric bills, from May to now (had the system installed in May) I have used significantly more electric than my old 17 year old furnace and AC. Although Davis is responsive to my calls. Not happy with the quality of the system which I paid top dollar for. read more

They charged me over $600 to install a pilot burner. Not because that is what it cost, but because that is what the "Flat Rate Pricing" is. When I was given the estimate I was led to believe this was a major undertaking. But, 2 hours labor and a $40 part and I was charged $609. I wish I made $275 an hour. The Service Manager basically told me too bad, that is what we charged you. I was stuck and had no choice as this was the Friday after Thanksgiving. Had Davis install a new heating and AC system in 2008. Of the companies we talked to , they were, by far, the most knowledgeable and professional. They also didn't play games (i.e. "sign today and I can take $500 off the price") with pricing, which I really appreciate. Just recently, the AC unit didn't work. I called there afterhours line. Their tech got back to me in 15 minutes! They were out at my house the next day and replaced the broken part at a very fair price. That's amazing service. read more

First impressions of Davis were absolutely excellent. Working with a very knowledgeable representative, we felt comfortable with Davis to move forward and replace our AC unit. However, like many others, we haven't heard back from the representative regarding a quote. We have kindly called and emailed but haven't received a single response. Office number, main number, cell number, and email, the results are the same - nothing. If it is this hard to get a quote then we can't imagine how hard it would be to get the system installed. Apparently Davis doesn't want our business to replace an AC unit or the recurring revenue to maintenance the unit going forward. Working with Davis has been a colossal waste of time. read more

Don't be fooled by the $59 service/trip charge. They charged me $142 for a 10 minute service. He wiped the moisture detector and turned on the AC. Took him longer to walk up and down the stairs and out to his truck to write up my invoice. read more

Best HVAC Company in the area!! Davis Modern is a wonderful company. They came out Monday to give us an estimate and today is Friday and the job is done well, at a very fair price, by true professionals. The gentleman who gave us the estimate was honest, completely clear on exactly what the cost was for the unit, the labor and the permits. And he showed us units that were reasonable in price with better warranties than any other brand. What really impressed me was the pride every person we dealt with took in where they work. The owner called to schedule our install and he, the technicians and Jim who gave the estimate all said they want to have our business for life and they will stand by their work. We found out our Central Air Unit was leaking coolant and needed to be replaced. Never a fun surprise. The company we have had service our units for years came out and the technician added coolant and said he would have the Sales Dept. call to schedule a time to come out and get an estimate. We were happy with Oliver for years but sadly they lost our business. Their sales person was clearly interested in selling us the Cadillac of units with an estimate of over 14k as we had to replace the AC and gas furnace that were almost 18 years old. He never even showed us anything but the Lennox line which we found out is double other lesser comparable units. We even had to ask him to write out his estimate as he planned to leave us brochures to look over with no prices. Though he pressured us to act quickly or the rebates would end. We paid less than half his estimate without any rebates. And through this process we found out we have been paying more than hundreds of dollars a year for our maintenance contract when every other company charges around 100 dollars a year. Stay away from the guys in the Orange trucks and be careful. Davis was clearly the best company after we did our homework realizing we could easily be fooled. read more

From Jim, the sales rep to the service technicians, to Bill Davis, the owner, we are very happy with our selection of this company to convert to natural gas and replace our central air system. Jim was knowledgable and did not try to upsell us. Installation was completed quickly and efficiently and price was reasonable. When I noticed later that some of the AC vent covers weren't big enough and old paint showed on the ceilings, Bill sent his guys out quickly to replace them. I highly recommend this company for any HVAC needs you may have. read more

Our thermostat was showing that our auxiliary heat was on. I had three different companies - Horizon, Carney's, and Davis's come out to diagnose. Horizon and Carney's told me that the unit needs to be replaced. They each sent out salesman. The salesman from Horizon gave me an outrageous estimate for HVAC system replacement - $12,000-14,000!! And that was for 3-year warranty. The sales guy didn't even produce any paperworks. Carney's was better. They quoted $6000. My only gripe with them was that diagnostician did a very cursory job before recommending system replacement. Then I called Davis's at the recommendation of my neighbor. Jim actually came initially to talk about price estimate for system replacement, but ended up recommending a thorough diagnostic work where they top off the heat pump with fluorescent dye to locate the leak. He said that if we are lucky, hopefully the problem can be solved with a simple repair. But he did warn us that it's a gamble. We took Jim's advice and had a technician come out to fill up the heat pump with refrigerant and dye for $800. A couple months later, I noticed that aux heat was running again, so I called Davis to come out and locate that leak. This time, Davis also told us that HVAC needs to be replaced. Davis offered $5600, and took off the $800 diagnostic fee from the total. Davis' offered 10 years warranty for parts and labor. This was the best offer yet. Today, the two guys came on time to install the new HVAC unit. The guys worked efficiently outside in the cold (the temperature today was in the 20s) and were courteous. From scheduling to installation, Davis was courteous, patient, efficient, on-time, and was honest. I'd highly recommend this company to my friends and neighbors. read more

Davis was recommended to us by a friend who had his oil heat replaced with natural gas through Davis in the spring of 2013. They quickly set up an appointment and came for the home evaluation in early August. They stated that quotes would be arriving within a couple of weeks. After three phone calls and no response, we still have yet to receive even a quote nearly two months later. The fact that they aren't even concerned with attempting to get new business does not bode well for how they would respond to issues with an installed system. There are lots of businesses in the area that do conversions - we'll be going elsewhere. read more

Had Davis out to tune up my system in the summer to the tune of $1000. Went to turn on the heat and did not work just blowing cold air. Called another service provider and they showed me that the system wasn't cleaned and spark plugs and filter not changed. It was obvious it want cleaned. I hate getting taken advantage of! read more

I can not speak more highly of this company. We lost our AC unit during the hottest week in July. We called several companies to come out for a diagnosis and estimate. Davis was the only company who was reasonable, professional, and knowledgeable. A serviceman named Matt took his time explaining, in detail, exactly what was wrong with our unit and what was needed to be done in order to fix it. We ended up needed a brand new unit. Since our heater was just as old as the AC unit we felt it would be in our best interest to go ahead and replace both the heater and AC unit. Davis gave us a package deal and had it installed within a few days. The servicemen who came to install the new units were very mindful of the house being our home and even used shoe covers when walking inside of the home. The service, price, and pride that this company takes in their everyday work is like none other. We will continue to use Davis and will recommend them every chance we have. read more
