I went today, got there late in donut time about 1120 am. My Mom is ill and wanted a powdered donut. We're not from Houston we're here for medical reasons. The man there explained Dawn's doesn't do powdered donuts usually but he made me two. Just touched my heart that he was willing to change the usual for my Mom. I also got an apple fritter. Best donuts I've ever eaten without a doubt! Here to work in Houston and typically we were getting Shipleys donuts for the crews on the weekends, but decided to give this one a try. Without question every single person wanted to know where the donuts came from because they were delicious! Just went in for the first time this morning - WOW!! I should've been going here all the time. Apple fritters melt in your mouth; both mild and spicy boudin kolaches, and the spicy doesn't burn you up. It's well seasoned and just to the edge of hot. The mild flavor is really tasty as well. My go-to H-town doughnut joint. The beauty is in the simplicity. Raised doughnuts grew up tall and they grew up right. They are consistently uniform in size and shape with a deliciously sweet and moderately applied glaze. Cut from the same cloth the doughnut holes are melt in your mouth pillowy morsels of paradise. The boudin kolache was lighter than expected (good thing) with a flaky freshly baked exterior and slightly spicy interior. Somehow each time I come here with my son free doughnut holes and glazed doughnuts make their way into our bounty, which is a testament to the owners who are kind and thoughtful. Despite its name, Dawn Donuts is not just a donut shop. Great breakfast sandwiches too! Prices are very reasonable. We had four breakfast sandwiches, coffee and donuts, all for under $25. You walk in and you just get this feeling that it's going to be a good day when you get to try one of their delectable pastries! I went towards the end of the day but the owner was so nice and very accommodating! She recommended different things and even gave me a sample to try! I will say my absolute favorite was the boudin kolache (5/5) because when it's warm, the carbs on carbs is just and amazing mixture of flavor and texture that makes you want to keep on eating! I would forgo everything else to eat this amazing pastry! I also tried the chocolate glazed donut holes (4/5), custard filled donut (4/5), strawberry filled donut (5/5), glazed donut (5/5), and sausage and cheese kolache (4/5). There's something here that's kind of like a kolache in a croissant that's pretty great. My partner and I had a hankering for donuts the other day and wanted to try somewhere local. We go browsing on yelp and google, as you do, and decided on Dawn Donuts because of the great reviews and their menu sign. Every great mom-and-pop donut place I've ever been to seems to have that type of backlit menu. The owner was super friendly and helpful with recommendations. We ended up getting an apple fritter, a glazed donut, a jumbo jalapeno sausage kolache, and a Viet coffee. Everything tasted fresh. The apple fritter was so massive that we saved half, and several hours later it was still just as good as that morning. It had a great glaze, and the dough wasn't too dense and had pleasant apple and cinnamon notes. The plain glazed was very fluffy and one of the best I've had. The Viet coffee was fantastic, like something my dad would make. The kolache did not skimp on the sausage, with great cheese-jalapeno flavors and a dough that was light and airy. It was far superior to the Shipley's kolaches across the street, which have a dough that I find rather dense and gummy. The kolache was so good that we went back to buy more, and they gave us a free cake sprinkle donut which was also amazing. Bottom line: if you are looking for a great local donut place, this is it. They have better quality and pricing than Shipley's, and the owners and staff are so friendly. Can't wait to go back! read more

Wow! I'm a HTOWN, raised on Shipley's kind of girl. Never would I betray a glazed donut...well today I did! For some reason I wanted donuts. I prolly haven't bought donuts all year. It beat the pants off any Shipley's or Krispy Creams location that I've ever been too. Their Vietnamese coffee is the bees knees as well. Their filled pastiest are stuffed on the spot and everything is always fresh and delicious as their products are created on location by the precious father and son team owners. OH MY GAWD!!! These donuts are honestly the best things I have EVER put into my mouth!! The owner handed us a fresh, hot glazed donut right out of his kitchen and I had to take a minute to collect myself, it was incredible!! Yelp mentioned that they are closed, but they have recently reopened and we are ever so thankful! My husband and I come to MD Anderson for medical needs about once a year and this is an absolute must-go place for us. We wish we could pack it up and bring it home to Williamsburg, VA because VA donuts cannot be compared to these babies and the kolaches (however that is spelled) are fantastic! Yay for a new neighborhood donut shop! I've been here many times on the way to work, church, or just on the weekends to share a donut and coffee with a friend. The owner lady is so smiley and sweet! She always gives me a warm greeting. My favorite is the jumbo jalapeno kolache. Bread is soft and sausage is flavorful with just a little kick. I enjoy the Vietnamese iced coffee although it's strong taste is too much for me. If you are like me, split the coffee in 2 cups and just add more milk! I also really enjoy the cream cheese danish roll and my brother's favorite is the jelly donut. Fun fact: she freshly fills the donut for you for any jelly donut you order!
