Making friends in the DC area isn't easy - I'll admit it, I've been here for more than 20 years and it sometimes seems like a revolving door of folks who mostly keep to themselves. Playing softball with DC Fray has been tremendously valuable as a source of both social interaction and team sports that are the right balance between fun and competitive. The dedication and thoughtfulness of Cameron, Quinn, and Jacob have - in particular - turned me from a "Virginia-only / once a week" player into someone who will play anywhere, anytime. Awful experience playing basketball in a DC Fray league. We played a game in which only we had to call our own game because she had to manage the scoreboard (?). One of the refs was also incredibly biased and favored certain teams over others. She would also repeatedly lash out at players. My group will not be playing again, and we advise others to choose Volo or All in Hoops, instead of Fray, for basketball. read more

I signed up for the tennis league, which DC Fray said would have less than 30 players and use 5-6 courts. Unfortunately, that just wasn't true. I went twice and found around 50 players squeezed onto just four courts. I stayed a total of 5-10 minutes because what I found both times was a scene that was overcrowded, chaotic, and unenjoyable. The drills in particular were a problem. On the two courts that ran drills, there were more than 20 players at a time. With so many people, you most of the time was spent waiting in line. This isn't what I signed up for, and it was incredibly frustrating to realize that the league organizers either oversold the program or didn't plan properly for the number of participants. Worse than being unfun, though, the setup felt genuinely unsafe. Within the first five minutes of my first visit, I accidentally hit someone with a forehand because the instructor had people retrieving balls on the opposite side of the net while others were still hitting. That was literally the second ball I hit, and I left after that. Given court space and safety space issues, I unfortunately can't recommend this program in its current state. read more

I do not recommend signing up for their premium membership simply because cancelling it has far too many issues. I checked that my membership was not active by using the membership verification tool on their website. I also checked the OTHER part of their site (Commish) and did not see anything about my membership getting renewed (or a way to cancel). I figured that I had already cancelled and that was the end of things. I later noticed that my credit card was still charged when looking at my statement. I emailed them only for them to tell me that the membership verification page is no longer supported-very misleading. They refused to provide a refund for the recent charge. I also am unable to find any email confirming my membership in the first place. Lastly, their customer service informed me that they may choose to charge the difference between the membership price and the normal price of a sports league if I cancel my membership before 90 days. This is not stated anywhere in their FrayLife Terms of Service. read more

DC Fray used to be a good place to play but as they have grown, they have given up on their customer base: Among the issues: -Frequent schedule changes -Historically multiple weeks of play but instead no game almost every other week -Some teams almost always assigned the early game at 6pm -T-Shirts often not ready for first gate -Amateur refs who make up the calls as they go -Infrequent and poor communication from individual league "leaders" -Failure to work with DC Parks, National Park Service, so games cancelled last minute, fields in terrible condition, including graff and turf/ DC Fray was a good thing but they lost their way and are just another money hungry company who don't seem to care about the player (i.e. customer). read more

People are dunkin on DC Fray. I'll give it a fair review. Yes, it's extremely disorganized. You'll never really know where the games are and the rules are different from ref to ref. BUT this is a social league to have fun so like you have to embrace how shambly the league is. Honestly, it helped our team bond. We just finished the late summer kickball league and the hotline never is updated for weather, you get an email at 6:05 where the game will be when you play at 6:15, we didn't get shirts until week 4, the bar is far away & yeah the refs are truly just texting the entire time but it's about **embracing** the suck. It was only $60 and whatever. If you're looking to meet new people and make some acquaintances then this is the league for you. Volo is also a good option too. If you truly care about organization then join Volo. My team switched over for the fall season and it's much better. Our biggest gripe was how far away Kelly's Irish Time was from the Mall & the bar didn't give us the discounts that we were told were part of the league. read more

After posting a schedule that included our team in the playoffs on Sunday, they stealth changed the posted schedule Saturday night without warning, kicking us out and ending our season without the game everybody was anticipating. Luckily one of our teammates happened to check the website or we'd all have shown up. They wasted a lot of our time and prep and they have yet to say anything was done wrong or that changes will be made despite my trying to discuss it with them (was shut down pretty hard). Just poor communication, poor customer relations, and poor loyalty to players after building up so much good will. Hope they address this issue and the communications too. read more

DC Fray has the benefit of being one of the few social leagues in the DC area. As a result it can afford to care very little about it's customers and organization because there really are not many options to go for social sports. From poor communication with management to disorganized referees who all seem to have different rules for each game that is played, I cannot warn people enough to stay away from this league. Hi All, I've shared this previously on Google but wanted to also add to Yelp to make more people aware of DC Fray's business practices. Again, the actual leagues are great, but they are an absolutely terrible organization to work with. **Update 3 (original review and update 2 below)** DC Fray has canceled two seasons in a row for our team. The first season, they automatically refunded my payment as "player credit" with no other option. After canceling the most recent season and lying about it in their email - something they have yet to deny - they will not refund our payments because most of us paid for the season with the credits we still had from the previous canceled season. I have gone back and forth with them for weeks and they cannot or will not point to anything in their player agreement or any other posted policy that allows them to do so, even though the player agreement says we are entitled to refunds. Basically, demand your cash back after every season they cancel even if they try to give you player credit. DC Fray wants to keep your money as an interest-free loan and if you ever want to get it back, you're out of luck. They would rather push away an entire team than abide by their player agreement and provide refunds for a season they never hosted. Original Review: Kickball is fun, but working with DC Fray has been consistently disappointing over three seasons. I've signed up with friends three times for a Thursday night kickball league, which invariably gets cancelled due to permitting issues. Early-bird pricing ends before the permits are allotted, so it costs an extra $10 to actually know what day you're playing. The fees are refundable/transferable, thankfully. So far this year, the permit notice only went out to captains. I'm not sure how mixed-group teams would hear about the change if they were put on a team with a captain they don't know. Last season, they moved from 1-2 league umpires per field, plus some team-provided umps to just one league umpire for each field. I don't expect professional-level officiating by any stretch, but there's just no feasible way for one person to do that job well. Some umpires have not been familiar with the league rules, which is disappointing. The bar partner for our league is too far away to walk and often forgets to reserve us any space or double-books our room. This isn't necessarily DC Fray's fault, but I wish they'd partner with someone closer and who shows that they value the league. I've had a lot of great times playing kickball through DC Fray, but the hassle outweighs the benefits of sticking with this organizer when there are several other options in the area. **Review Update - Two Years Later** Hi all, back with an update about the joys of trying to play kickball with DC Fray. Our team was so excited to get together for our league again. A lot has changed, our favorite pregame bar is gone (RIP Sine), we're older, new jobs, etc. DC Fray remains the same. DC Fray emailed our team *the day before our first game* and said the entire league was canceled. They said: "We apologize for the confusion BUT it has brought to our attention that some players did not receive this email." *Minions Gif* Absolutely no one on our team had been notified of this prior to yesterday. So either our team was the odd one out who didn't get notified or... they're not being completely honest about how it went down. That's my vote. This wasn't a size issue as far as I can tell, there were more than a dozen groups already signed up, so it's not like there weren't enough players. The extra great thing about being notified so late is that it's too late to sign up for any other kickball leagues. They generously provided a list of the other leagues they're offering - the only leagues open are bocce, cornhole, and tennis. So my assessment of DC Fray remains the same - if you can get in a league, it can be so much fun - but good luck getting past their terrible planning and communication. read more

They messed up permits for our Spring soccer league, which was supposed to start in April, and postponed its start till June, then we show up for the last two games of playoffs and were kicked off the fields by a police officer because DC Fray did not get permits for us to play on Anacostia HS. They then asked the three remaining teams for makeup times to play, and have yet to schedule those games nearly a week later. Words fail me to describe how much of a dumpster fire this organization is, but numbers suffice: 0/10 Edit: We were winning 1-0 when the first game was called, and they just emailed us to say that because we can't field a team 7/14 (because we had already signed up for their Summer Wednesday league that starts 7/14), we had forfeited the season. Back when DC Fray rebranded from the USS days, it used to be a great name in the social scene. In fact, there was a huge loyal following of people who would register every single season for years. Lately (trust me, this has nothing to do with COVID), the vibe from the organization went from a great team of motivated hosts who would build a great community to a toxic environment where it feels like you're feeding them a lot of money for a subpar experience. In the field, the hosts/refs/staff seem to lack interest in running the games (they will literally say "go", and stare at their phones half the time while disputes go on on the court/field). It's not a matter of them misinterpreting the rules or seeing something different. It's more-so they don't seem to care about what's going on as long as they get paid to open the doors and stand around until their shift is over. Many people I know have given this type of feedback, and it's evident they haven't taken adequate action on it. It kind of goes against their marketing messaging "to make fun possible" when I'm convinced I could just go to a local meetup and do the same thing. This is across at least three (3) sports/activities I've engaged in. In addition, I have seen a pattern of them protecting toxic individuals in their programming (not only players, refs, too). We provide feedback throughout the season regarding these incidents and issues, and most of the replies amount to a lot of inaction and victim blaming. It's partially why before the pandemic they lost a venue after I complained about a host several times regarding his lack of response to bullying and physical harm to various individuals in the league (not only my own team). It's also partially why players have left permanently while the league stays complicit with players who run a temper tantrum to rig games in their favor, making it unfair for people who are trying to be compliant while others cheat. I know most others have testified about their billing practices (no refunds despite not receiving the services rendered). I will not echo it further here, though it's a real thing (use your credit card dispute process to your advantage). It is evident DC Fray has turned into a for profit company we trust less and less as time goes by. And with the latest increases in registration fees, I question whether their work to procure these venues makes up for the amount I am paying (e.g. it's close to how much I pay for a single day pass at the rock climbing gym...and their equipment is way more sophisticated and I can use it for hours...not just 30 minutes). We understand COVID restrictions hurt the industry immensely, but I've seen competitors respond more cordially to questions and concerns. I've done the work to try and improve things with them for years, and I will tell you right now there is no benefit in working with a company with the "my way or the highway attitude". Go find another competitor (very easy to google) as you will get your money's worth AND meet lots of great people. Disclaimer: I've been a customer to DC Fray for several years (on & off). I've played with DC Fray for the last two years, and it is exactly what you expect of an adult sports league: fun, but disorganized because they just care about making money. What motivated me to write this review is that within the last couple months, two of my fellow players have reached out to the league with questions and concerns about the player experience and on both occasions the staff member (Brittany Rheault) responded in a way that was unprofessional, rude, and patronizing. Worth it if you're new in DC and looking for some local friends. It's a lot of BS if you're not in that situation and definitely not worth the money. First and foremost, I met some amazing people through my team! I believe they ultimately went on to become good friends so I'm happy for them. We partied together while in the league but grew apart naturally because I am way older than most of them and have different interests. ANYWAY...the games were poorly ref'd and wins would sometimes be at the mercy of when the ref wasn't on their phone. We should have won certain games we lost, and lost games we won...but the ref. Our coach was pretty awesome and wasn't overly competitive, so there was only pressure to have fun and support your team no matter what. But the refs! We also played a fall league and dealt with darkness. They told us we were converting to a glow league (totally different set of rules) after a couple of games. The overwhelming dissent pushed back on that idea and the sports fields left the lights on for us. Ultimately, you'd think DC Fray would have had the oversight on this?? read more

Extremely unorganized and no customer service whatsoever - once they have your money they make clear they don't care. This business is run by people who, ironically, are very poor at organizing events - quite literally the only thing they need to be capable at, and then make absurd excuses as to why things don't happen. For example, why would you wait until 10 minutes prior to a game to tell us where it is, thus guaranteeing half of us won't be able to make it? Apparently because of "issues with the city" lol. They really expect us to believe it's not just because they're lazy and unorganized and whoever is operating this business couldn't be bothered to do anything until the last minute. Or they "emailed us earlier but wanted to make sure we all got it" lol. So no one got the email you sent "earlier" but magically we all go the email you sent 5 hours later hahaha? 5 weeks into our league we still didn't have our shirts. Guy from DC Fray responds with "they must have been LOST IN THE MAIL" lol. They actually gave us the "lost in the mail" excuse. When we asked for the tracking number to see if we could find them, he said they "don't use tracking numbers there". Magically, the next day he said that he had found them, and would Fedex them to us, "as a favor". AS A FAVOR lol. It was like dealing with an arrogant 14yo that doesn't realize how ridiculous they are. When we brought up with them that we weren't receiving what we paid for - their suggestion was that this was a good opportunity to "bond" - they suggested that we bond over their complete disregard for providing what we paid for lol wtf? ? The bar partner for our league could not be any further away - basically if you took a map of DC and marked the farthest point away from where we play, that is where the bar is. We spend most of our time getting there, not hanging out, and the majority of the team now no longer goes as it's just too much of a hassle. The bar also regularly forgets to provide the specials they're supposed to, and like DC Fray, responds with a shrug. If DC Fray was free or cheap then I wouldn't have much expectations of them - but it's not, and they should at least provide what they say they will. I joined a DC Fray kickball team for this spring and playing kickball and the social activities afterward are really fun. Unfortunately, this organization is pretty unorganized and their website is not always clear or in working order. I also went to a Nationals game event hosted by DC Fray and there were a ton of technical errors, but in the end, the seats were great. It is a little pricy-over $60 to play in a league, and they really lack any drink specials at the bar afterwards. But overall, playing kickball on the National Mall and meeting new people is really fun so I have to give it four stars even though the lack of organization and communication can be really frustrating. read more

I've had a few OK experiences with DC Fray, including volleyball and kickball, but my latest experience with soccer left me so disappointed that I highly doubt I will be coming back for any more leagues. I will most likely check out Volocity or Zogsports. Here is why: I registered with a friend as a free agent group looking to find a team for a Sunday league soccer. We registered at least a month before registration closed. I emailed and called the DC Fray office on multiple occasions to ensure that everything was all set and that we would be placed on a team. I vividly remember speaking with their phone rep and he guaranteed me that once registration closed we would be placed on a team and ready to play. Lo and behold, the day of registration comes and we receive an email saying the league is full and that we would not be placed on a team - and they would then offer us a refund. Not only were we lied to on the phone about being placed on a team, but the notification that we were locked out of the league came just 4 days before the league was supposed to start. Because we had to wait so long to find out, most other DC social leagues registration had closed in the meantime, so needless to say, we really got screwed. Not once did DC Fray reach out and even warn us that there would be a possibility that we would not be placed on a team. The whole point of these social leagues is to meet people and have fun. So, why would they not give more of an effort to place their free agents? Because the league filled up with people who know each other, that means everyone who signed up as free agents for that league gets locked out? How is that promoting inclusivity? I registered as Free Agent well before so shouldn't priority be given to those who register first? So am I to believe that a team who registered at the last minute knocks off any free agents? Simply disappointing. Probably won't be coming back. read more

I wrote an e-mail to the league mentioning my concerns, but I was not surprised when I did not receive a reply. And I think that helped to reinforce my decision to avoid DC Fray at all cost. I just finished up playing 6x6 volleyball @ the lincolm courts on Thursday nights. The season wasn't well run, and the playoffs were a disaster, which left our whole team angry...and really dissatisfied. For the size of the league they need more than one person running it, and that is especially true during playoffs. Unfortunately, the person running the league was socially awkward, and rude. All of the other sand v-ball leagues (which run about the same price) have refs, and are generally a lot better run. We are promised three games per night, but it seems like things are always rushed ...after a couple of seasons you get the impression that they oversold the leagues, and then you try and nickel and dime players by having one person ineffectually run 4 or 5 games at a time. I recently signed up for my first intramural leagues: one was a casual Monday Night bar trivia league, and the other was an athletic-level men's basketball team. Overall, I really had a blast. Everyone was a pleasure to be around in both leagues. While the basketball league was more competitive, everyone's priority was still to have fun. It's pretty easy to stay up-to-date with team announcements, schedules, etc. through their member portal. I'd definitely recommend DC Fray if you're looking for a new way to meet people and to find a great way to spend your free time. read more

These guys are terrible. False advertisement and terrible at communicating. We had signed up for their Late Night Glow Snow Tubing trip. The advertisement had neon light down the snow tubing path. Unfortunately we were scammed. The snow tubing path was dark with zero lights. And the only "glow" were from the lame glow stick necklaces that they gave us. Additionally, we had tried contacting them multiple times to see if the events were still going on since the weather has been so terrible recently. My friends had called multiple times and left multiple messages and no one ever returned their phone calls. read more

So many problems with this organization Extremely disorganized: - Constantly changing fields at the last minute (like less than an hour before the game) - Constantly changing game times as well (pushing games back hours later extremely close to the original game time) - Poor communication on schedules (had people drive 50 minutes to a game just to have it canceled because the other team forfeited 15 minutes before the game and members from both teams still showed up at the field) - Their website needs a serious overhaul, this thing is awful to navigate and does not give useful information (like seriously the only method of communication with my teammates I don't know is email? I can't let them see my phone number?) Extremely inconsistent umpiring: I will preface all of this with some empathy: this isn't entirely the umpire's fault because they are effectively managing the entire field as one person. However, if they aren't sufficient enough to officiate the game then the league should be responsible enough to improve on this or add additional officials. - The rules of the league are not consistently followed we have pulled up the rules to show the umpire only for them to either call and conference to decide if we should follow the rule in the books already or them disregard the rule entirely. - Fields all have entirely different rules that are not consistently enforced (what the heck is a home run? foul ball? unplayable ball?) Also, some fields have homerun limits while others don't? (what?) - The rules are incredibly generous to the batter (fair game it's meant to encourage offense) but it leads to excruciatingly long innings where the batters just refuse to swing at anything even when balls fall straight on the plate are still called balls and it just becomes a walk fest. - We've had umpires entirely lose track of the count of the at-bat multiple times in the same game - We've had both teams agree a player was out on a play then the umpire called them safe and refused to listen to the teams both telling them that person was clearly out. The league also seems to care a lot about explaining rules only in the first game of the season where our umpire seemed engaged and interested in being there, after that it was more likely one of the team's players could umpire more effectively or at least pay attention the entire game. This goes without the mention that the league seems to not care at all about explaining safe play, had several instances where players had their entire leg covering a base which is just asking for an injury as well as players improperly sliding into bases almost taking legs out. The umpires made no effort to even acknowledge these dangerous plays happening even when people brought them to their attention. Overall I don't think I'll ever participate in this organization again, they seem to not even care if the games are run in a quality manner. This is all without even touching on how unfun and unbalanced the SOCIAL/CASUAL league was in terms of skill level. read more

I joined DC Fray for 4 seasons of volleyball and each season I kept thinking it would get better than the last one, but my experience in all 4 seasons was bad to say the least! * When it is communicated to you that you have a sponsor bar to enjoy after your "social game" and not by any means an athletic game, especially when it is extra hyped up in each email DC Fray sends out reminding you of your sponsored bar; then you show up at that said bar and the bartender and staff have NO CLUE what you are talking about even though you had just finished the game and still in your DC Fray team shirt. This should have been a first flag but whatever, Going to let it pass as probably whoever is working at DC Fray has no communication skills whatsoever and forgot to let the "sponsor" bar know the details! * DC Fray is in no means diverse at all, all 4 seasons I have yet to see someone who is not "white" on my team! In addition, looking across the other teams there would be 1-2 black people or other races in a pool of 9 vball players on a single team. Hey, DC Fray loves diversity so much in a 20th century world that they could not handle any more diversification! Who knew! (Don't believe me, check their Instagram takeovers! just white chicks across the platforms starting the day off with their basic-ness) * Now, let us talk about prices and fees. To join a volleyball team the minimum you would pay is $75 and the most is $85. I never understood why I was paying so much for barely anything in return. A t-shirt that costs $10 at most. A sponsor bar that doesn't offer anything but Bud Light beer, or was it the referee fee for a person that has no clue what just happened and we would have to let her know she missed a point or a foul. DC Fray probably pays them to stand on the sides and hold the scoreboard. So not professional and worst service ever! At least train your staff so we know we are paying $75 for a good reason * This one is for the players, the ones that think they are competing on a national level; I believe when you signed up, registration said "social" league not athletic and what I do not understand is you getting very competitive and all over the place trying to serve, set and score like your country's title is dependent on it! YO, CALM DOWN! It is a social league for a reason and it is for all levels so respect someone that has no experience in volleyball or is beginner. Telling your teammate who is off the court and on the sidelines (waiting for a turn) "I told you move out of my way" while trying to hit the ball is definitely very professional and fits within the team spirit. * The number of players DC Fray tries to fit within each volleyball team is ridiculous. The court is 6v6 and they add 3 extra players, that's a total of 9 and when all 9 players show up and each is waiting a turn to play, will probably hit the ball at 2-4 times the whole game if not less and yes I've spent a whole game 2-rounds with only 1 hit the entire time! Because there are too many players on the court. Dc Fray will never give you money back. If you sign up it's like signing up for death their way or no way. They have issues with refs in all leagues and make you ref without pay. Dc fray will not answer emails. Communication is the worst. During this pandemic I asked for my Money back for a league I found out was not advertised correctly. I lost my job so I thought this company for the people would help its customers out. They don't want what's best for you or the community they want your money and for you to shut. This league USED to be good. DCFray got lazy. They make you ref your own games or make you ref other teams games. When the dcfray staff does decide to work with the teams, they mark the scores wrong including during the playoffs. When we asked one of the staff members who marked the wrong score for our team - she said "you can write my name in the email to dcfray I don't really care" unfortunately I don't remember the waste of molecules name, but that's a pretty shitty response for someone who obviously didn't pay $60 to play on a league. Go to Rivall - they have a better league, paid refs, a dj and they're cheaper than DCFray. read more

Growing up, I never had to have gym class or PE. My mother - a tiger mom that would put Amy Chou to shame - always wrote a note to get me out of class. Her logic is that I'm a girl and girls should never be outdoors in the sun, or even more horrific - SWEAT. So I grew up exercise-less. Which probably explains my pudginess, and according to my husband (who played in team sports all his life and is a good "team player") also explains my inability to work together in a team (it's my way or the highway!). I've never missed this lack, although being on a sports team is on my "to do" list of life experiences. What is a girl who has absolutely no athletic ability to do? Fortunately the two Alicias were looking for new teammates for their skeebar league, run by United Social Sports. Is this what being on a team is like? If so, I heartily approve and I think I'm now a little bitter that I've missed out on this experience all my life! Skeebar has all the earmarks of a perfect sport for me - it's at night (I don't function before 1pm), it's at a bar (heh), it requires very little movement (yes I'm lazy), and I get to TAUNT the other team! WOOHOO! What I lack in skeeball skill, I more then make up with delightful mind-games with the opposing team. But more importantly, the league is extremely well run! The "ref" that runs the skeeball league each week is funny, energetic and laid-back. The games are fast, with silly little "mystery rounds" and the ability to earn spirit points with cheers. Although my husband doesn't consider "skeebar" an actual sport, I think he's just being a hater because he's jealous of all the AWESOME that he's missing out on! read more

You're on a skeeball team? "Yep." There are teams for that? "Yep." I had such a great time . The organizer really made this a pain-free process. I got to pick a lovely color for my team shirts. The fee to join the league was reasonable. And the place that we played skeeball was conveniently located by the metro. Bonus on all accounts. Did I make any new friends? Not really. People kinda stuck to hanging out with the people on their own teams. Interactions were very cliquish. But that is what I kinda expect of the DC Metro area. I did have fun with my own friends. This is definitely not something that I would do alone. read more
