I went back to introduce five different friends to the Afghan cuisine. The gracious Yasmeen had a table organized and reserved for us. We ordered one potato bolanis for appetizer with beers and five orders of kabob. There were no kabob leftovers! Everything was freshly cooked and delicious. The kitchen was kind enough to serve the food family style and there was plenty of spare naan and rice, but the delicious kabobs were all gone. Folks really liked the lamb, but my favorite is still the mildly spicy chapli kabobs! I took a bolani home. It is perfectly crispy after a few minutes in the toaster oven. It is a smallish restaurant but Yasmeen manages the front end well with a helper. Highly recommended! read more

We've been fans of this restaurant for a while now -- the food never disappoints -- but what really cemented our loyalty was when they catered a family dinner for 30 people, including about a dozen kids, a mix of vegetarians and meat-eaters, and guests with nut allergies. Not a simple order by any stretch. Getting the owner (?) on the phone to place the order took some persistence, but once we connected, she was fantastic. She helped us figure out quantities, steered us toward the right dishes for the vegetarians and the kids, and was upfront about what contained nuts. She even threw in extras (salad and dessert) to complete the meal. I felt like she treated us like family. Pricing was very reasonable, everything arrived on time -- delivered by her uncle, no less -- and there was so much food that every guest went home with a takeout container -- the true mark of a successful spread. My husband was considerably less thrilled that I didn't save any of the meat dishes for home (he still laments it every time we talk about this awesome catering experience to others). For dine-in, our favorites are the lamb kebob, the Qabili, and the chicken kebob. We'll keep coming back. read more

It was my hubs choice for dinner and he chose De Afghanan. I've always seen it but have never tried so we did and it did not disappoint. We came for an early Sat dinner and seated right away. Staff were welcoming and our order was taken pretty quickly after sitting down. Menu is straight forward so not a ton of choices to pilfer through. We ordered the bolani kachaloo, beef and chicken kabob, and a chicken, beef, chapli kabob. Food arrived piping hot snd fresh. The bolani was good but I think it needed more flavor and I wished the bread was crispier on the outside. The kabobs were so delicious and tender I was impressed. Cooked and seasoned to perfection, I just wish it had an accompanying yogurt sauce. Other than that the meat was fantastic and we would definitely come back. One of the best kabobs I have ever had. Hi guys! I loved De Afghanan in Fremont, so I decided to try the Walnut Creek location, and it did not disappoint! The food was so yummy, but beyond good food, hospitality is what really makes me want to come back to a restaurant. I came here a few weeks ago with a friend, and Raihana (I hope I got her name right!) took care of us. She was so kind, attentive, and polite. She checked on us multiple times and was genuinely such a warm person. It was my friend's first time trying Afghan food, and because I always speak so highly of it, I really wanted her to have a good experience. I was so happy that she loved not only the food, but the hospitality too. We were out for a walk and decided to try this place. I've never had Afghan food and really didn't know what to expect. The three of us tried different meals, and Sheridan appetizer, the only name I remember is the chicken kebab. All were excellent. We shared each other's food and brought home a bunch of leftovers. I will say this, the food is good. The meats were juicy and salty and the rice was buttery and soft. I'm giving this place 3 stars mainly because I did enjoy the food. However, service is slow. There was maybe 1 table ahead of us that ordered and our food took about 30 min to come out. When we were done, the hostess took our plates and we thought she was ready to give us the check. She only gave it to us after we asked when 10 minutes had passed. Our meal for 3 people cost around $80. As soon as we stepped foot inside of this restaurant, we were warmly greeted with smiles. There were plenty of indoor seating available on a friday evening for dinner. This was my very first time trying Afghan food and I was shocked on what I've been missing out on. We ordered the Bolani Kadoo for an appetizer dish. This is a flat bread pan fried with squash (it almost looks and tastes like a quesadilla). It was freshly made, warm, and melt in your mouth good! It was plenty to share for 3 people. As for my entree, I ordered the Bondinjon Borani - a roasted eggplant and tomato dish topped with some garlic yogurt sauce, served with a side of a TON of rice and a side salad. The rice was also very good, it is a type of basmati but very flavorful and complemented well with the saucy eggplant. We were also well taken care of too and were helped by a very kind woman. You can really see and taste the quality of all the ingredients they use here. I have a big appetite so I was very happy that they offer generous big portions here. Amazing food, poor service. We got potato and leek stuffed appetizer that was served with yogurt and mint sauce, this was very tasty. The chicken kebab was delicious and the chicken was so soft tender and delicious. They served it with basmati rice and cucumber salad. The boss eat rice was extremely flavorful and they give you a lot of it. My husband got the lamb shank with that with the rice served with the topping of carrots and raisins. This dish was amazing and the lamb meat just fell off the bone. We would definitely come back for takeout but not for a sit down. The lady who took our order did not take down the items we wanted so half of them didn't make it to the table. The bread wasn't brought until after the meal was done. She also brought our entrees at two different times so we were just sharing our dinner until the next entrée arrived. The table next to us also had their orders mixed up, so maybe it was a rough day in the kitchen for them. They were also mentioning that their food was brought in so late and they were going to miss their movie times so they decided to just pack up their dinner and leave. My favorite kabob house in the Bay Area! Don't know how to say this but it's slightly better than the other DeAfghanan Kabob restaurants- the owner also swears by it. Everything is perfection here. Each kabob is made fresh, the appetizers are delicious and I can never eat enough rice! Beware the food takes a long time to prepare as it's freshly made and then grilled over an open fire. You have to order quickly and you have to order appetizers or you will be starving by the time the food arrives. That's not a knock on the chef- good things take time. Small place with a few tables, good service and food. We ordered: Mantu (3 Stars) It was ok, nothing really stood out, the beef stuffing was ok. The dough was fresh and soft. They topped them with Lentils (al dente, is that good or should they be soft?) in a tomatoes sauce that was under seasoning and then drizzled plain yogurt with dry mint of the top. I'll try a different appetizer next time. Green Chutney (4 stars) Like most Afghani restaurants they have a little container on the table. This one was thick and very spicy, a good heat! Combination Kabob (Sub Lamb for Beef, Chicken, Chapli) (4 Stars) The lamb was well seasoned and tender. They asked how I wanted it cooked, I said medium rare, it was well, but still good and not dry. They pulled it off just time, but no pink. The chicken was marinated and seasoned well with a bright red coloring, cooked perfectly with a slight char, but still juicy and tender inside. They finished with a sprinkling of sumac (they also have a shaker of sumac on the table, next to salt and pepper) The Chapli was mixed with green onion and spicy, really good. It was cooked perfectly with crispy edges and soft inside. Good stuff! The kabobs were serviced with a small salad of large julienne cut cucumber and tomatoe with cilantro (the whole leaf, not chopped) and drizzled plain yogurt over the top. It also comes with brown basmati that is perfectly cooked and separated/fluffy. Nothing compares to their beef and chicken kebab with brown rice! The meat is consistently moist and tender. We would fly from Las Vegas to California just to eat here. We met the owner in this location, Wais, and he was very nice and accommodating. We always get a complimentary appetizer. Last weekend we finally tried out De Afghanan Kabob House. After being seated on their patio, we ordered the butternut squash and leek bolani starters as well as their main combo kebob plate. Both bolanis were similar to a crepe with the butternut squash being slightly spicy. The combo plate was delicious with the rice fresh and light and the meat high quality and flavorful. It did take a bit of time to be served, but overall the quality and flavor made it well worth the wait. All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would absolutely return. read more

Had this place bookmarked for a long time! Tried the kebab combo and chaplee. The chicken, lamb, and beef were pretty juicy and flavorful and the rice was amazing. I didn't enjoy the chaplee as much; just didn't enjoy the spices in it. Also tried the yogurt drink but it wasn't my fav. Reminds me of tzatziki, but as a drink and it wasn't cold. It was also really quiet at lunchtime on Saturday. No music while 3 tables dined in. If you got time and want a meal with flavorful protein, definitely visit! read more

Most tables are set for 2 or 4 people but lovely Fatima quickly organized a table. We ordered potato bolani to share for appetizer with beers.
