This was my first time here. For some reason, the brunette white lady was RUUUUDE! (I specify because there was another lady with fairer hair who was friendly but was making coffee.) She was just staring at me when I placed my order and then got upset saying she couldn't understand my question (I didn't ask any). Another great coffee house in the Eglinton area but the drink sizes are expensive price wise . Their cafe machine is truly a manual beauty compared to the automatic machines lots of coffee shops operate. The selection of Espresso Drinks and sweet treats are very diverse and quite good. This place has amazing pastries. It's all made in house and you can tell how fresh they are. They serve very unique coffees, using their own beans that are also roasted here. The staff is always very friendly and kind. They also have coffee cards so every 10th one is free! The coffee was great, lacked bitterness of alot of places. AND baking was amazing. I took a healthy cookie (that tastes anything but), a lemon square (best ever), sour cherrie gluten free brownie (I don't chocolate but the sour cherry made it amazing) and the chocolate caramel square with sea salt .... Awesome siphon coffee! Great Iced lattes and cappuccinos! Amazing desserts- all homemade! These guys know their stuff about coffee. We like coming here after dinner for coffee and dessert. Their ice cream is delish. We've had the sour cream ice cream with the waffles, the vanilla burbon one with the s'mores dessert, but I think our favourite dessert is the pear one (last one on the menu). Definitely recommend this place! And they told us tonight that they would be serving lunch in a month or so. read more

The first thing that drew me to this place is the decor. What keeps me coming back is the coffee. The iced cappuccino is fantastic, as are the lattes and cappuccinos. A couple of friends ordered the Americano and thought it too watery. I have yet to try the siphon-method coffee they serve. If you want tea, though, don't come to a place that roasts its own coffee beans in-house. Otherwise, you're the guy who orders french fries at an Indian restaurant. The desserts here are baked on site, and if you're lucky the baker will be on premise and ready to answer any questions. If you go early enough, the croissants are still warm from the oven. They taste good regardless. I have tried a couple of their other desserts, too (the pear frangipane and banana something-or-other). Both were delicious and, you guys, they came with homemade ice cream. This is a great place if you want to just relax with a consistently great cup of coffee, and maybe treat yourself to something sweet. Staff is very friendly, the cafe itself is warm and aesthetically appealing. It's also a pretty good perch to people-watch from, or meet up with friends and while away the evening. After mourning the fact that I have to spend the summer apart from Metropolis Coffee in Chicago, this place has lessened the separation anxiety for me. I'm hooked. read more

The chai tea latter is delightfully creamy and not overly spicy, and the croissant is the best I've had. I also love the atmosphere of this café and the staff is all very nice! I couldn't bring myself to spend so much on a little pizza ($8), so I went elsewhere. On my most recent visit, I ordered a chai latte, which came to $5.37, then I sat down, figuring, at least it is a nice change from doing work at home. WRONG. Fantastic establishment! Living in the Yonge/Eg area, I find variety and character of coffee shops to be fairly limited. Fortunately, a friend recommended De Mello, where I now visit at least twice a week. The employees seem to genuinely enjoy their work space and are always greeting me with a smile. In the past I found certain coffee shops to be a little too pretentious for my liking. Thankfully this has not been an issue at De Mello. The coffee is well known and respected throughout the city, and the pastries (cookies, overnight oats) have been a recently added 'treat' (..sorry..). Everything seems to be made with care and passion. I can't recommend this place enough for those living in the Yonge/Eg area, or for anyone willing to travel a little north. I really like this place. Server was really friendly and they were pretty quick to make our lattes. Lattes were quite good and the pastries were really good as well. I've now had 3 bags of beans from here and can safely say their beans are awesome! The price is on par with other local roasters but it's great that they have the roast date and a one-way valve on the bag. I love coffee and consider myself knowledgable, they make amazing cappuccinos that remind me of home (Switzerland). I think the coffee is comparable to some of the chic London (England) micro coffee houses (that are featured in London's Coffee Guide)... Their pre-made coffee is the only thing i will drink without milk, that in itself is a testament to its quality (in my opinion). You got my support keep up the great job! This coffee shop is backed by a solid coffee culture. The owners (two brothers from Australia) are big on educating their staff. The baristas and roasting staff are participating in competitions. Compare that to some other popular places, where the staff barely pay attention to what they are doing. I love their cappuccinos (with extra thick foam); the taste is wonderfully subtle. The pastry chef is quite dedicated: you could see her pounding the dough with vigour, when required. Her croissants are very good. Believe me, it is not so easy to find decent fresh croissants. The actual in house roasting staff pay great attention to what they are doing. In between roasting, you could see them studying books about coffee. Same for the baristas.Today I had a chance to compare the darkest roast from De Mello, Dead Man Walking, and the darkest roast by Pilot, Big Bro. Sorry Pilot, I know that you were voted the best roaster in Toronto, but truly De Mello Palheta overtook you. Big Bro tastes flat compared to the complex taste of Dead Man Walking. read more

Came here because of a friend's recommendation. We ordered an Americano, a brewed coffee, the Flat White and also, two croissants: almond and butter. Everything spewed thoughtfulness and quality. The coffee was nothing to scream about but is on par with many other great cafes in TO. The croissants were fresh and delicious. Prices were all in the $2-$4 range which is not bad. However, what won me over was the friendliness of their staff. Conversations flowed naturally between customer and staff. They cared about your order and followed up to be sure everything was correct. Their hospitality overshadowed the fact that they housed competitive coffee roasters indicated by their awards in the back. Finally, best of all were there freshly made pastries situated in the back which filled the air. At the time we left, broccoli and onion quiches were being prepared. I moved out of the Yonge and Eg area about 6 months ago, and have been itching to venture back, only to get a coffee from de Mello! When I was living and working in the area, I would stop in several times a week, usually ordering a latte. I tried a cappuccino once- best decision ever. Perfectly made, perfect taste and texture. When summer came, I tried their cold brew coffee- absolutely fantastic! I love the lemon, a touch I would have never though of! Anyone who is heading north, I always suggest they stop in.
