de Mello is one of the few true gems in Toronto. I had the opportunity to talk to the chef, who makes batches of their yummy croissants each morning, and have a new found appreciation for the pasty! She explained that croissants are essentially fine layers of dough that are continuously rolled on to itself. At least, that's what I took from the conversation... she spoke with such exuberance, that I wasn't able to catch everything, haha! Really damn good. It's really rare that you find a casual food/drink joint that does everything in house. They roast the beans, they make all of the food (which features some delicious home-made feeling pizzas, excellent almond croissants, and the list goes on). Very friendly staff, and unbelievably good Espresso. It's as if this place belongs with all the other super-legit eaters in Distillery District, but we're luck enough to have it in midtown. 5 stars if you get a better sound system! read more

De Mello Palheta is a nice cafe. There are nice comfortable seats and tables behind the counter. You can relax to have a cup of coffee and pastries. De Mello Palheta has a nice relaxed atmosphere and they are casual not fancy. Their coffee and pastries are excellent. I think it is expensive though. American is $3.00 even though it is good coffee. I've passed by De Mello Palheta many many times (my favourite skincare line is just a couple of stores down) but never went in, because the front of the store looked too eclectic for me. I'm so glad that we decided to pop in. I think in terms of distance from my house, even though this is quite far, this is has become my favorite coffee shop. I took a sip of the latte I ordered and I had an OMG moment. I've never had that with coffee before. I don't' even know how to describe it. I just knew I wanted another. We also ordered a chocolate chip cookie, and a smores bar. The chocolate chip cookie was ok, kinda chewy. The smores bar I didn't like too much, the hubby enjoyed it. I believe they make everything themselves. We sat in the back of the store, where they have an open-ish kitchen where I saw someone prepping food. They don't just do espresso based drinks here. They also have a 'coffee bar' where they allow you to choose from different drip options. I believe they have the pour over, chemex, and siphon options. read more

4.5 stars! These guys make the best coffee in the neighbourhood in my opinion. Bonus points for roasting their own beans. I come here quite regularly as I work down the street. Even though it is farther than the other coffee shops in the area, I am willing to go the extra block as the coffee is delish. My preferred drinks of choice here are the lattes and cortados. Only drink I've had here that I wasn't a huge fan of was the Iced Latte, but that might just be because I should have asked for skim milk (I find it's too much milk flavour otherwise). Price wise it's fairly reasonable for the area. Plus they offer double shots of espresso for drinks at no extra cost, so if you like it strong this is the spot! Food wise I recommend any of their daily baked bars (rhubarb was amazing!), tarts or the almond chocolate chip biscotti. Not a fan of their croissants unfortunately - I prefer a more flaky texture, but they are huge! They also have mini pizzas and quiches for those looking for something savoury. Lots of seating available (there is more in the back). Free WiFi. Never too noisy here too so I'd say it's a great spot to have a meeting or work away. read more

Came in to try some of their fancy coffees thinking I was going to become some sort of coffee connoisseur. Had the "slow bar" filtered drip coffee. This takes 10 minutes to brew and cost $5. I hate to say it, but it tasted like average, luke warm coffee. Nothing really special. Also tried the cold drip, which supposedly is brewed over night and never heated. This was $3.50. I wasn't impressed either. I'm willing to bet their regular drip coffee is better... or maybe I'm just not cultured enough. It was just anti-climatic. On the bright side, their food is pretty good and the staff was friendly, explaining what the slow bar coffees were. They have pre-made mini pizzas and quiches. read more

I really wanted to try this place in the ever quest for really good coffee in Toronto (vs. NYC, SF, CHI) Had a double espresso today as well as I bought some beans. As soon as I took a sip of the espresso I was disappointed. My expectations were way too high. This is not to say I wont be back, but I have a good feeling this place focuses more on siphon style, which is really cool. My boyfriend asked for a cappuccino and got a latte. seriously guys? mistake number 1. I ordered tea, can't go wrong with that. came in a nice big mug, just how I like it. We also ordered a quiche and an almind croissant and ask to heat them up. We got our drinks about 10 min later which was a bit odd since the place was empty expect of us and another couple, but whatever, we talked and enjoyed the atmosphere(pretty nice and artistic). But the funny part was when we got the croissant 25 min later, as for the quiche, 45 min later because the girl forfat about it! the atmosphere is great, the prices are fare, the coffee is nice (if u r lucky to have a barista that actually know whats the difference between a latte and a cappuccino), and the food is pretty good (when u get it in a reasonable time). There are so many better cafes at yonge&eg, im not sure ill come back to this one. read more

This is my second time here and I have to say I love the vibes. They have these really cool beakers to brew their coffee and also bake all their goods on site. I had the chai tea latte which I thought was pretty good. The milk was extra creamy and they even added extra cinnamon for flavor. My only critique is more of a preference, I personally like my teas strong and the latte tasted more like milk with cinnamon on top than actual chai tea. My husband on the other hand had the espresso and he absolutely loved it, he strongly recommends anything coffee from this spot. read more

I stepped in because I'm a sucker for Almond Croissants and another reviewer mentioned they had the best ones here. First impression here was definitely the barista who greeted the customers walking in by first name. SHE KNEW THEIR NAMES!! That's 6 star customer service right there. I mean, she didn't know my name but we just met and I forgot my 'hi, my name is.....' tag at home... I ordered a macchiato and an almond croissant and they were both wonderful! The coffee smelled great and it was smooth (whatever that's supposed to mean, am I right!?). Either way, lets go with the technical term of 'mmmmm' for the macchiato. The almond croissant was flaky and delicious. It wasn't the best I've ever had but I have to put being critical aside and just say that it hit the spot. It absolutely hit the spot. If you're looking for a non douchey non pretentious and absolutely delicious breakfast, coffee or snack here's your cafe. I was hoping for a better experience based on Yelp reviews. I'm not a very picky person when it comes to pastries. But would have to say I would take Tim Hortons over this place any day. Went in on a tuesday night and ordered a banana chocolate cheesecake and some sort of hazelnut cake. It was incredibly inedible and very stale. Staff mentioned it was made 2 days ago but I think it was longer based on the texture of the cakes. Traded the cheesecake for a lemon tart. Taste was good but the crust was rock solid (would need a knife to stab it into pieces.) Also ordered a latte and it was okay. read more

Just an avarage coffee. This goes specifically to their espresso which the taste cannot be covered by other topping, milk & ... Have been there couple of times, and found out sign of sourness in espresso shots, either the beans havent been degassed properly. or the esspresso is not pulled as longer as requires. Signs of under extraction, maybe. Anyway, its a kindo pitty when they have such an equiped roasting factory behind the store but the esspresso comes out the average. Try their Cortado, its very good.. the milk microfoam covers the sourness and you can enjoy a tick taste of coffee and milk. read more

After having a slightly unpleasant experience last year, I didn't bother returning to De Mello. Now I'm often in the area and the need for caffeine takes precedence! I realized that most of my orders for lattes, cappuccinos or flat whites had consistently underwhelmed me. Now I stick to an Americano because it's always good. In addition to their house blends, I love that they rotate their other beans, so you can try something new and different each visit. They have upwards of 20-ish varieties/blends available to purchase, so you can take the experience home. If you're like me and get overwhelmed by too many choices, their staff is helpful and passionate about coffee, so they will steer you in the right direction! read more

Went here for again to try their coffee and chose to go for the siphon/vacuum pot preparations again. Had their Anastasia blend. Coffee was great and well prepared. One of the owners prepared the coffee with extreme concentration, which was nice. They had a wide variety of coffee's available for brewing and also available in small bags of whole beans stacked on shelves for guests to purchase if they'd like. The lack of availability, choice and a lackluster preparation was the primary reason I gave them fewer stars the first time. Also had a fresh and delicious Almond Croissant, highly recommended it. Perhaps one of the best cafés I've ever been to. All drinks as well as pastries and foods are outstandingly delicious. They're made in the back,with a window showing the kitchen, and you can see foods being made while you sit in the back seating area. Such pleasant staff! The café in general is so unique, intriguing and homey all at the same time. In my personal opinion, its well worth the price to see such an independent and all-around excellent café strive and maintain such a wonderful standard of food, drink and character. This is my go to indépendant coffee house on Yonge at Eg (I have another one on Eg at Yonge ;). The coffees are great: cap, flat, latte, dairy, vegan, and chai lattes have all been sampled by my gang and all get full stars. That they sometimes ask "what size flat white" is only slightly annoying (like caps, there is only one "size" but we probably have corporate coffee to thank for that). We actually by our beans for home brewing here sometimes too. The treats are lovely as well - I love that I can get quiche or frittata with a side salad for breakfast. The vibe is quite fun. There's a communal table up front (although not much communing - this is still North Toronto after all). And I love watching the baker through the glass in the back. Watch yourself on the stairs to the WC in the basement; a tad tight and a tad steep. Service is very nice. read more
