came here on a Saturday afternoon around 1 pm to study, and the place was pretty packed. I got the Iced Oat Milk Matcha with Raspberry syrup, and it was a great choice. The raspberry flavor complemented that strong matcha taste well, and it wasn't too sweet. The cup was also bigger than expected, so I thought it was great value too. I also tried the Blood Orange Iced Tea. It was unsweetened with barely any blood orange taste, and it tasted watered down. I wouldn't recommend this drink. One thing to note is that you must order a drink to get a WiFi code that's valid for two hours. read more

Came again with bf's sister - good way to get out of the house to work on a rainy day. London Fog is still good. I appreciated that the owner and employees brought in tables from outside to accommodate the amount of student study groups coming in. There were a lot of orange signs inside though that made me a bit uncomfortable, as I thought the messaging was a bit aggressive, regarding outside food. Had a nice afternoon coworking at Dean: A Coffee Shop today with three other people. We arrived just before 2pm on a Saturday and had an easy time finding an outdoor table for four. The patio had a mix of sunny and shaded spots and plenty of space between tables--though bring headphones if you need to concentrate because louder guests can be heard across the sitting area. Landscaping is manicured just like the interior, and everything feels crisp and new. I ordered a small Americano and a vegan gluten-free peanut butter cookie, and added my friend's oatmilk latte with a shot of peppermint to my tab. The total came out to just over $13, so a bit steep. Dean: A Coffee Shop charges vegan tax, meaning if you want non-dairy milk, you're paying an extra dollar. I'm not a fan of this, but I am a big admirer of the vegan, gluten-free cookie, which I'd tried once at a catered event and was pleased to have again. If nobody told you, you wouldn't think it was either vegan or gluten-free. Trust me and try one. There are other pastries and food items on the menu as well, if you need lunch or a snack. The drinks list is varied and there are non-coffee options too. One little snag: I ordered my Americano "for here" because I despise single-use products. "For here" should be the default unless requested otherwise (because it's not Dean: A Coffee [pit]Stop. Most people were staying a while.) However, when I got to the drink-making end of the coffee bar there was my hot water sitting in a paper cup. I mentioned that wasn't a good look for Dean, and the person making my drink promised a staff member would use it and assembled my Americano in a ceramic mug. Just a little hiccough to warn you about if you're into sustainability--which, ahem, you *should* be. Wifi was a bit slow but I could still work successfully, and the piece of patio around the side of the building on the east edge has an outdoor plug. There are also plugs indoors. There are two gender neutral bathrooms as well, which were nice and clean. I'd say "bonus!" but having clean gender neutral bathrooms isn't a bonus, it's a must. So good job, Dean: A Coffee Shop. Will definitely be back to study again in the bright, airy space which felt safe at this stage in the pandemic. Let's hope Dean: A Coffee Shop can abolish or lower its vegan tax and make sure to showcase its cute pastel-colored for-here cups and saucers instead of filling up the bin with single-use products. read more

Despite having a limited menu, each drink I've ordered has been delicious. They also offer different types of milk for an additional dollar. With that being said, this place is on the pricey side. However, the environment is a quiet and perfect study area. Sometimes it gets loud, but it's still doable to the point where more than half of the seats are filled. From college students to adults, everyone is welcomed here. On another note, I recommend ordering the ice hazelnut latte. BUT this one was soooooo much better than I expected. Even my husband who is not much of a bagel lover thought it was delicious. Also a plus for me was the outdoor dog friendly area! I had been wanting to try Dean for months now and my sister and I finally went this morning. The woman who I assume is the owner took our order and was very rude and short to us. We couldn't figure out if we had done something wrong-we were wearing masks and none of the employees were so maybe she was offended by that or something. The drinks were very expensive and I really disliked the iced oat milk chai that I ordered (usually my favorite drink at coffee shops), which I feel bad saying because it was one of the house specials. It tasted really watery and honestly was one of the weirdest tasting chais I've ever had. I was so disappointed the last couple times we came here for a couple reasons. The lids leak so much! Omg I came for my afternoon pick me up and was in my work uniform and my drink leaked all over me. And it's been happening consistently. I have to wrap a lot of napkins over the lids and they of course just end up sopping wet. Another thing is the amount of people that they have take up the tables with no purchase or and empty cups that look like have been sitting there forever. Is insane! The times that I want to sit enjoy conversation and drink my latte with my husband there are never any open tables. Just a bunch of students taking up tables. Also idk if the switches bean suppliers but the last couple times the beans tasted almost burnt. Like too roasted. Not the smooth espresso taste they used to have. My go-to is a simple iced vanilla latte at most coffee shops, hard to mess that one up. But I saw they had Vietnamese coffee on their menu. I had the barista pick for me and she picked the Vietnamese coffee. Done deal. I gotta say, it's probably the best Vietnamese iced coffee I've ever had. They seem to have more food offerings than most coffee joints, and the pastries look delicious. I had a jalapeno cheese bagel and it hit the spot. Everyone was friendly and the prices are very good. They've fixed their wifi issues that I previously experienced here. Now you can request a unique wifi code upon purchase and the wifi had been working great. Dean has to be one of my absolute favorite coffee shops in sb! The drinks are incredible, the food is amazing, and the ambience/aesthetic is so warm and inviting. I highly recommend the goat cheese toast (I haven't stopped thinking about it since I tried it)! I got it on gluten free bread and it was so delicious. Additionally the people who work there are so kind and welcoming. While there is a ton of seating indoor and outdoors, we found that there were not many charging outlets (at least in the back area with the booths) making it a little difficult to work on our laptops. Additionally, to gain access to the wifi you have to purchase something which is completely understandable, but you have a limit of two hours. This was frustrating as my friend and I planned to spend the workday here so we had to make unwanted purchases just to be able to sign in again (also make sure you keep your receipt since it will have your code to the wifi!) I thought the coffee was tasty by itself, and the bagel I got was flavorful. One tip - when putting honey into a drink that you're pulling espresso for its best to allow the hot coffee to pour over the honey so that it mixes into the drink better. Rather than honey lumps in the coffee. Other than this, the experience was fine. Service was good too, but a little slow and some excessive chatting happening between the workers. read more

I love the vibes they have keeping it local and watching them grow over the years has been great. Located off of Hollister close enough to the Fairview exit off of 101. Not too much parking available in the lot. Came here with my husband for coffee. We lucked out in finding parking. Upon first sight, I was impressed with store layout featuring a sleek, almost-cosmopolitan vibe. I ordered a cortado. Table seating inside and outside. Most tables were occupied by students but we were lucky to find one available. Staff was friendly. My cortado was okay. Beans were over-extracted and resulting shot was quite bitter. The avocado toast is ok and costs $9. Overall, nice looking coffee shop, great study spot, average coffee. Pro tip: bring a sweater or jacket for colder weather if you plan on staying. read more
