The meat skillet was more like a "lots of hash browns and little meat skillet." There was very little meat compared to the amount of hash browns. To make matters worse, the hollandaise sauce on top appeared to be an old, congealed glob of sauce. It was honestly horrible. And then there's the toast. Does Randy's think people want butter only in the very middle of their toast? It would be nice to have the butter spread across the entire piece of toast. One person in our group ordered bacon well done. Well-done bacon should be crisp, not limp. These are small details, but they really shouldn't be difficult to get right. On the positive side, our server was friendly and did a good job. One of our orders was incorrect, but she quickly corrected it and brought out the right meal. Hopefully, this was simply a bad day for Randy's and not a sign of a decline in quality. We've enjoyed coming here for years, which is why this visit was particularly disappointing. Each booth has a cool white hanging light in place. The floor is black and white checkerboard. The retro decor has various signs, some metal, other framed pictures, just a cool touch. At the counter there are signs up above the workstation that mention what type of shakes are in place along with other dessert options. Music from the 50's and the 60's plays, it's a good vibe. The place had quite a few customers and it appears to be a popular place. Onto the food. There is a good size menu in place, and you can have breakfast at any time. There are German based selections also. Two of us ordered the chicken club melt with fries, one of us ordered a burger with fries, a kid's chicken nuggets meal and a hot beef. For the hot beef that my husband ordered, there was a choice of a side. He decided on Kroll's famous Knoephla soup. The description on the menu says, "lumpy and yellow just how grandma likes it". Out comes the soup. Here's the thing, you either like this soup or you don't. My thinking: it's great to try new and exciting things. There was nothing bad about this soup, we just didn't care for it. To me this tasted a bit like mushroom soup. There were a few dumplings, very dense and square. But we tried it and then we moved on. The sandwiches were good, the burger was just ok, nothing special going on there, the kids' meal was ok, my husband says the hot beef was very good. One of our people ordered a chocolate shake. I did not have the lunch or supper or any of the deals related to either so I cannot comment on them. I am sure they are amazing as Kroll's gives off the impression they are more known for them, especially the supper. I came here one early morning a few weeks ago because I had a particularly long, rough night prior where I did not get a wink of sleep. Kroll's was the only place open at 6am that I knew could serve a reliable pancake platter. Having a good prior experience before when i was going to university and came here at 3 am, i figured Kroll's would be the way to go. I want to also mention quick that this diner has some of the best service in all of Fargo. You can see how unbelievably busy the Diner is yet everyone still has a smile on their face (and if they don't, they are locked in and focused) and will happily serve you anyway. I ended up getting the Grandma Kroll's Pancakes that came with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and your choice of meat. I got the smoked ham. While the meat was questionable but that was not what I was there for. It was at least edible. the eggs were cooked beautifully as per request and the 2 flapjacks that were my reason for sitting in that red seat were nothing short of divine. They were big, fluffy, savory, and warm. Even though the syrup is not genuine maple syrup (at least as i could tell), it pairs so well with diner style pancakes that it shines in its own way and paired excellently with these. Their pancakes are delicious. The food, overall, is solid. Unfortunately, as i was eating, I was greatly disappointed to see that some of the table menus, and table special ads, used ai for it's imaging of the food and designs. Ignoring the already glaring issues with using ai for the sake of focusing on the food for a second, I find this disappointing because this tells me that Kroll's is not confident in it's own food and brand image that it's built to use their own images and are perfectly fine compromising their own family old-school diner aesthetic for it. This also brings into question the recipe of every item on the menu. if they are willing to compromise the image they have developed over the years, then there is always the possibility that ai might've been used in making new food items or to change and alter already existing recipes. Overall, Kroll's is a great experience and will definitely satisfy the diner style food you're craving. Until the ai is no longer being used, i cannot, in good faith and judgement, give this establishment any higher than one star, as that is how harmful ai is. Ignoring the glaring ai issues, i would give Kroll's Diner a 3.5 / 5
