We stayed for 6 nights during the first week of November 2014 and stayed in the very spacious suite on the 1st floor. We loved the neighborhood. It's much quieter than other areas of New York, but it's only 1 block from the 28th Street stop on the 6 line, and it's very centrally located, by the Empire State Building. We loved having Bread & Butter (24-hour deli, hot plate foods, and small grocery store) across the street. We walked from Penn Station to the hotel with our rollaway suitcases and backpacks. It was no problem. The hotel lobby was clean and cheerful, and the front desk staff were always friendly. Our room was a suite with a bedroom (Queen size bed and TV, but no door on bedroom), bathroom with shower over tub, living room with sleeper sofa and desk, and kitchenette with mini-fridge, microwave, kitchen sink, coffee maker, four coffee mugs and a plate. The microwave and the mugs were perfect for heating up my instant oatmeal in the mornings (with unsweetened almond milk that we bought across the street at Bread & Butter and kept in the fridge). There weren't any sponges or dish soap provided, and I hadn't brought any, but I was thrilled to see that the mugs and spoons were washed and dried by the daily maid service. Yay! The view out the living room and bedroom windows was of a Zen garden & courtyard and other buildings. The windows face north, and being on the 1st floor, the suite is in the shade. But the windows are large (the suite has very high ceilings and the windows go most of the way up), so it wasn't as dark as one might think. Also, one could see the light reflected off the south faces of the tall buildings on the other side of the garden. An advantage of being in the back was that the room was very quiet with very little street noise. When we first arrived at the hotel, the water in the sink as well as the bathtub was not draining. On the third day, we finally got a chance to let the front desk know. They said they would take care if it while we were out. And guess what, they did take care of it. When we came home that evening, bathtub and sink were draining just fine. We went all over Manhattan, Harlem, and Williamsburg and had a great time. We walked and walked. We had a fantastic time. What is the magic formula for a great hotel stay? Location + Amenities + hotel staff + experience + Price = Hotel stay rating. Did you follow that? Say so now, I'm not going through it again, so pay attention. Bottom line: This hotel is actually very good for the equation listed above. I will go through them and you can judge for yourself if it's for you. Location: Located in the heart of the Flatiron district, it's not in the noisy part of town. It overlooks an office building and a not-too-busy street. Quiet at night. Located across from a Bread and Butter (24 hour food place), near a laundromat, reasonable distance from 2 subway entrances, a drugstore and several restaurants. Grade: A Amenities/Experience: What do you really need in a hotel during a possibly expensive stay in NYC? A place to rest. No bad suprises in what you're expecting when you book the room. To me, it's whatever's standard to the price I paid. I expected to use a shared shower/bathroom. That was well maintained and kept rather clean. I didn't expect a fridge in my room; that's ok. I got moved to a different room when first got there because the A/C didn't cool my room. The room and sheets were clean and they were changed everyday or whenever you wanted them to. Grade: B+ Staff: Very friendly. Fast check-in and out. Very accomodating. Even printed me maps and told me which subway lines to take. Took the time to talk to me about anything I needed, and it wasn't all business. Wish I could clone them. Grade: A+ Price: For what I paid, this was a good stay, considering the above. Grade: A Great hotel, especially with the formula used above. It's not perfect, but for someone like me, who was in NYC for a week, and only stayed in my room to rest and sleep, this was worth it, and got more than I paid for. I am very thankful that my boss recommended this hotel to me when I mentioned taking a short vacation to NYC. He and his wife, who are both musicians have stayed here many times. After looking at the hotel's website, my husband and I decided to make an online reservation a few weeks before our trip. There was a little confusion, and our reservation ended up under some other random person's name, but it got sorted out quickly when we arrived. The people working there are INCREDIBLY nice. We booked a suite, which was just perfect for us, and they gave us a free night! We stayed for 4 nights total, and were up on the 5th floor. The first night I discovered at 11:30 PM that the hair dryer didn't work. Not a problem! Someone brought another one right away. Our room had not one but two TV's! We don't even have two TV's at home! So this was a luxury for us. It was also really nice to have a couch to relax on in between schlepping all over the city. It was also great having a microwave and fridge in the room, too. The lady who did the cleaning each day did a fabulous job too, I must say. They have an old fashioned elevator with an actual person running it. I love places that have character such as this. I'd take an older family run charming hotel over a sterile boring chain place ANY day. We will definitely stay here whenever we visit NY again! Considering we could see the Empire State Building right out our bedroom window, this was a great and not too expensive place to stay. read more

The hotel was decent enough for the price and the staff for the most part was friendly. I did have some complaints about the room. For one our shower head was in the middle of the shower instead of at the end of the tub. When you turned the shower on it shot out of the tub and in to the toilet. The rooms were old, but clean. They have a hand operated elevator that some might find quaint, but it was just awkward. I don't know if you tip an elevator guy or how much. I basically used the stairs as much as possible. The lobby was nice though and had several comfortable seats. The reason why it gets such a low rating is that a couple that we went to the hotel with were accosted and accused of robbery by one of the hotel employees. After they later complained about this treatment the staff member felt that there was no need to apologize and no apology occurred. This is just unacceptable for business. It says they are a family business and maybe that is why they have such poor customer service. It is fine to be a family run business, but you still have to be professional. read more

The Deauville is a clean, solid choice in the Murray Hill area. It's not "Boutique" nor will you find these sleek, contemporary, modern, redone, etc stuff that you'll see in some other NYC Hotels. But nor will you pay the price you'll see at those places. This area is also a quieter area, a little away from most of the "touristy" areas, but there's subway stops nearby, and if you know the City, and don't mind being out of the crazy madness that is Times Square, it's a safe way to save a few bucks. There are some really good restaurants within walking distance. The staff is friendly and knows the city and how to recommend what you're looking for. Quite the bargain for NYC, and who could complain about that? read more

A strange little hotel with non of the amenities you'd expect if you regularly travel. While you do have a bed, a dresser, a TV, and a bathroom, it's definitely a different experience than the norm. Rooms are spare -- clean, but spare. Lights in the room are harsh, giving the room a very dingy feel. Beds are the "Hollywood" style -- no backboard. We had one lamp that had maybe a 20-watt bulb and had seen better days. We slept fine, but I don't know that I'd revisit. There is one small elevator with a 24-hour operator. So close to getting five stars. I had to go with 4 because of the noise during the night. There was non-stop pigeon noises coming from outside and also noise from the heater in the room and water pipes in our bathroom. So, we had trouble sleeping at night. Now for the positives: They upgraded our room from a shared bathroom to a private one when we got there at no extra charge! The price was reasonable to begin with. The staff here was excellent and very nice during our stay. Both people that worked the front desk were very helpful with directions. They held onto our luggage for the day, even after we had checked out at noon. Leaving us relatively bag-free while we roamed the city. They filmed a little bit of 30 Rock at this location. I almost don't want to tell you about this hotel. It has character and you can almost feel the presence of people from 100 years ago. It's not sparkly and new, but it's clean and very comfortable. The staff was super nice and the location rocked. I could easily get a cab when needed and loved the neighborhood. Only negative: no ramp to get suitcases in and out of building. We spent from 5/15-5/19 at the hotel. We had a room with two double beds and a private bath and booked through Orbitz. I knew what to expect from tons and tons of research about the hotel. The hotel was originally built in 1901 as an apartment house, they have a hand operated elevator too! The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was pale pink and the shower head was in the middle of the tub (not a problem for us) and was a waterfall shower head. Free Wi-Fi worked great on the 6th Floor and was a definite perk!! I think the best thing about the hotel was the location, it was SO CLOSE to the 4,5,6 train and we literally used it for everything. We also loved having Bread and Butter (small grocery store think mini Whole Foods) across the street and a dive bar, Desmonds, around the corner. I would recommend this hotel for a budget conscious traveler who wanted a great location! read more

If you're looking for upgrades, amenities, or swanky hotel digs---this isn't the place for you. But, if you're on a budget and/or know that the only time you're going to be at the hotel is to sleep and shower, this is probably a darn good choice. The rooms are bare bones and pretty small, the furniture doesn't really match, and you have the choice of a private bath or a shared bath. T he elevator is manually operated, which is kinda groovy. It was fairly quiet and the staff was super friendly...including safely holding on to my wallet that I drunkenly left in a cab the night before (that cabbie deserves serious kudos for bringing it back). Anyway, I will definitely stay there again because you can't beat the price or the neighborhood that has a much more local feel than staying in other areas of Manhattan. read more

So I decided to book here on one of my stays in New York City.. Check in process was pretty fast I was able to check in before 3 o'clock which is always a plus no extra fee required. I was given a room on the six floor and says there was only one elevator which is old fashion I had to be took an up-and-down every time by the elevator person.. I mean the stairs are always in option, but who wants to travel up and down six flights of stairs every time?? AnyWho so I get to my room and I was given a double bed the beds are pretty comfortable they also provide an extra pillows which is a plus for me since I love pillows.. However I was placed on the floor with the family and their children so throughout the day I had to hear their children running through the hallways yelling and screaming to where I had to poke my head out a couple times and almost say something.. ((not cool this is not a playground if you have children take them to the playground)) Moral of the story of my stay here I gave it a try but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice, The location I guess is pretty convenient my room was pretty spacious the bathroom was all right I guess the only thing I disliked was the elevator thing and any guests that you had come visit, would have to check in at the front desk... Oh last but not least the elevator man late night early morning seemed as if you didn't care for his job too much when I came back from a night on the town I had to find the elevator man ((Who was sleeping in the back)) just to get back up to my room he seemed kind of bothered that I interrupted his sleep!! read more

At first glance it seemed like a nice place. Turns out you get what you pay for: every towel in the room had hair from previous guests on them (more than one hair, in fact). The bathroom sink had wipe marks from the cleaning staff not properly cleaning the surfaces, there was hair dangling from the corner of the sink. The toilet was not flushed and had dirty water (though it looked like it was just dirty with soapy water, whatever). When I turned on the shower, the water foamed as if the soap from the last guest was still in the stall. The sheets seemed clean but there was a dead cockroach by the bed. I gave them a chance and inspected the room when returning from work the next evening. It all looked the same. Toilet wasn't cleaned at all and neither was the bathroom. The towels were even worse than the night before. The elevator guy said "I wish I could tell you this was the first time this has happened" after I demanded to leave the hotel at 6PM without being charged for another night's stay. This is a shame. The location is fantastic, the hotel is charming and old. What a waste of good real estate. read more

I LOVE the location of the hotel. The subway is one block away, there's a nice bar called tonic that's also one block away and they have NINE HOURS long happy hour! wool!!! how could you beat that! It is also 1.3 miles away from time square and half a mile away from penn station, Loved it! The hotel is obviously old and not big at all! Our room was small, simple and clean, not too bad, we paid $150 for a night and you really can't beat that in NYC and in such location. The staff are friendly and they're helpful with giving us directions and advices on where to go. I would definitely stay here again the next time I decide to spend a weekend in the city. read more

Great location. Close to subway. It's historical building so it's older. There's only 1 elevator & it needs to be operated by one of the staff. I didn't have any trouble with the elevator. It was mostly available when needed no wait time. Yes, it's an antique elevator. Everyone was super helpful. Relatively quiet. I'm a light sleeper but didn't have any problem sleeping through the night. No noise from next doors. The room is small but clean. There're several nice restaurants in walking distance. The accommodations were sufficient. Clean towels, sheets, room, lobby, bathrooms. We weren't looking for luxury, but were looking for the convenience of a clean and proper, well located hotel. Hotel Deauville did not disappoint. In fact, it seemed that everything we could have wanted, for the total luxury of home, was within a 5 minute walk. The decor is classy, in a Parisian turn of the century sort of way. Indeed advised, if you select a shared bathroom room, try to request the 2nd floor, as you would be one floor away at all times. We didn't mind the nostalgia of hostel rooming. This is a perfect situation if you want to be out and about in NYC, and want to spend your money on other awesome things. Gene at the front desk was invaluable in providing assistance and advice. All in all at the end of our stay we felt satisfied and grateful. read more

So my daughter and I were headed to the Big Apple to see Queen with Adam Lambert at Madison Square Garden! It was the second trip to New York for both of us and a dream event to see my favorite artist Adam Lambert front the iconic Queen at an iconic venue like Madison Square Garden! I spent months planning our 3 night trip. I scoured the internet and sites like Booking.com, Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc looking for a reasonable hotel. I probably booked and then cancelled at least 10 rooms. This gem of a hotel never came up for me in any searches. I was referred by a friend and fellow Adam fan from Denmark to the Deauville Hotel. I booked directly through their website and paid $109 per night + tax for a single/double room (a room with only one double bed) and private bath. I was excited and felt like I had made a great choice. Let me tell you Deauville Hotel not only met my expectations, it exceeded them! First of all the location is to die for!! Between Lexington and Park Ave on East 29th Street in Murray Hill. I kid you not we walked from here all the way to Greenwich Village to the lower and Rockefeller Center to the upper (not on the same day of course). It is convenient to walk to just about everything and if not there are easy cabs to be hailed and the 6 train right around the corner! The location alone would warrant 5 stars even if it was a dump. But this place is far from a dump. It is quaint and unique, clean as a whistle and the staff is amazing! There are no amenities but there is a great place across the street called Bread & Butter. It's a 24 hour coffee shop/restaurant/grocery store/convenience store. We were in there every day and night. And there is a Duane Reade just a short walk away to pick up any of your toiletries the TSA may have confiscated. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The ONLY negative I could find is that they could use some softer toilet paper. I love NYC and definitely go there as much as I possibly can and I will always stay at this hotel from now on. My friends and I had a great weekend staying at the hotel. The rooms are a little plain but it works and most of our time was spent exploring nyc, not watching tv in the hotel. We were on the 5th floor and walked a lot of stairs because we felt bad having the hotel guys having to operate the elevator, which is gorgeous. The rooms were average size with minimal decor, but it worked, especially for the price. One of the best aspects about this place were the people who work there. A lot of reviews regarding hotels say how the front desk people were rude and not helpful. Deauville Hotel is the opposite. The staff let us drop our bags off early, before we could check-in, so we did not have to drag our bags throughout New York. They were really helpful and so nice. I would have given this space a 5 because it is the perfect location, 1 block away from the subway, and on a quiet side street in the middle of the Flatiron, Gramercy, and Murray Hill area so there are tons of things to do within walking distance. The reason for only 4 stars is because while I did think I got a resonable deal on the place, they did not have an ice machine and some other basic amenities you can find at a chain hotel. I wish I discovered Hotel Deauville much sooner! I reserved a room with a private bath at a seasonal special rate of $119/a night. It was only for me, so the room I reserved was to have one double bed. I arrived about 2 hours before check in and they had the room ready for me. Plus, they upgraded me to a room with two double beds. The total cost for one night (with all the taxes) was $140.05. I have been traveling to NYC almost every single weekend since the end of February 2010 and this was by far the most spacious and least costly hotel room I have stayed in. The other hotels I stayed in were Kimpton's 70 Park, the Clarion-Park Ave South, Riverside Tower and The Courtyard by Mariott-Upper East Side. I would stay at the Hotel Deauville any day of the week over any of those other hotels. My base rate at the Deauville was cheaper than any of these other hotels and even with the taxes, it was less expensive than any of these other hotels. My room was immaculate, the closet area was the largest of any of the other hotels I have stayed in and there was a dresser with plenty of room to store enough clothes for a week (for one person). There was a new flat screen on the wall and there was a desk in the room as well. There was no alarm clock in the room, but I had my cell phone for that. Also, the door to the bathroom did not close (hence the reason for 4 stars) but since I was staying by myself, that was not a problem. Also, I gave the rating 4 stars because both of the two windows in the room did not have screens and had to be propped open with a roll of toilet paper. I normally would not have cared too much, but there must be a lot of pigeons in the area because the sounds were non-stop and I was afraid one might fly in through the window. The elevator is small and I thought that because it is a hand-cranked one and operated by a hotel staff member, that I might have to wait for a long time to get the elevator. I was totally wrong. It was always super fast to arrive (much different than my experience with the elevator at the Clarion). The lobby of this hotel is very nice. Also, I checked out early in the morning because my event would not have me back at the hotel until after the checkout time. They held my luggage for me in a secure room until I could get back for it. The Deauville is about a block away from the 6 subway line, so it makes for easy access to the upper east side. A few stops downtown to 14th street-union square ravel to other lines that will service the west side. I took photos of my room, the hallway and the bathroom and if I could figure out how to post them here, I would. I am so pleased with my experience here. I will certainly stay again! read more

We stayed here right after Christmas and had a great time. The room was large for New York and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. We felt very safe at this hotel. I have twice stayed at the Deauville Hotel, in Manhattan, and will definitely stay there again. The staff is very helpful and friendly, the prices are excellent, and can sometimes be negotiated, and the location is central to everywhere I wanted to go. The elevator is staff-operated instead of self-service, and it is small and gorgeous. This year, I had a "junior suite" on the first floor-two rooms and one bath. The bed and pull-out couch were both comfortable, and the roll-away bed was ok, too. It had a fridge and microwave. The Bread and Butter 24-hour restaurant is across the street, so good food is always available. There is a subway stop a block away. The hotel was built in the 1890s, but has plenty of electrical plugs. The rooms are plain, but roomy, and there are plenty of drawers. The small front porch is nice for sitting in the evenings. Nothing fancy, but for the price and friendliness, it is excellent. read more
