It's definitely one of the more intimate and romantic boutique hotels near Central Park. This stylish pop-art inspired boutique hotel has 34 rooms in all. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The size of the rooms are relatively small. But from what I've heard that's pretty standard for New York hotels. Staff were friendly and helpful. Made some great suggestions for dining out in the city. The hotel offers a complimentary cold breakfast with pastries and coffee. Very delish! And parking is available for a standard fee per night. I only stayed one night after my flight was unexpectedly canceled but I'm really glad I chose The Moderne. Like most reviews have pointed out, the staff is phenomenal, truly. Every single person we interacted with was friendly, welcoming and helpful. I genuinely enjoyed chatting with them, which made an already stressful travel day feel a lot better. The hotel is cute, modern and artsy with a fun boutique vibe. My room was surprisingly spacious with a full closet and very comfortable beds and pillows. I ran out of my travel shampoo/conditioner and had to use the hotel ones provided ones, they didn't dry out my hair and smelled amazing (small detail, but it matters)! That said, the room did show some wear and tear the carpets and headboards have definitely seen better days. There was a slight odd smell when I first walked in. It wasn't a deal breaker, just something worth noting. The hallways are on the darker side, but it matches the aesthetic. Breakfast in the lounge is simple pastries and coffee, not many hotels in the area offer complimentary breakfast at all, so we appreciated it. The location is walking distance to Central Park with a market right next door that has a hot food bar and basically anything you might need. There's plenty to do nearby. I attended a work conference in NYC and the moderen hotel is where we stayed. Upon arrival on a Sunday evening the elevator was being repaired. I had to walk to the 6th floor. Thankfully the front desk staff carried my luggage. Besides that I personally had no issues with my room and the hotel. Unfortunately, some of my colleagues did. - one colleague had a room on the first floor with a broken AC unit. Her room was at 83 after arriving late Sunday to check in. She was provided a table fan and was told not to open the window since she was on the first floor. I believe her room was switched the next day but she still spent one night in that room. - another colleague was unable to get into her room one night because the batteries for the key card door lock was dead. It was midnight and an employee had to physically break the door lock so that she can get her stuff and transfer rooms. I think overall the building is a bit old although the rooms seem renovated. Absolutely ridiculous behavior. I was tricked into a non-refundable booking (I made approx 15 other refundable bookings at this hotel at the same time). I asked to cancel 3 months in advance so they would have plenty of time to re-sell the rooms and they insisted on keeping ALL of the money for 3 nights. I have stayed here multiple times in the past few years and would have expected better. Fix the HVAC so when you try to cool the room by switching it to cool and setting the temp to 65 it doesn't instead heat it from 71 to 81 degrees causing you to get up in the middle of the night to open all the windows and the door to cool the room down. Also didn't appreciate finding a woman's hair beret on the floor next to the bed that wasn't there the prior day of our stay. Crumbs on the carpet indicate they don't vacuum with any consistency. If possible avoid the upgraded room that means you get the front facing the street so you are serenaded by sirens, shouting bar patrons, and endless construction which starts at 7am. read more

Huge mistake booking this hotel. Booked a Deluxe King room for 3 nights. Upon checking in found out the room had no windows and a broken HVAC that made terrible noises. When I went down to the front desk they had nothing else to offer that was better. I walked away and found another hotel. Trying to get a refund for never staying there has added to the terrible experience. I can't get anyone on the phone and they say to send an email BUT their email system bounces ALL emails. I've tried sending from multiple systems with many different addresses - same result. F for "deluxe" room and F for customer service. read more

In town for a show at City Center. Just a couple of blocks away and stayed there. The room was great for our short stay. The hotel is close to many things. The room while small, was clean and comfortable with a small refrigerator. The staff from check in to room upkeep staff were quite pleasant. It's a small hotel which we prefer and while I didn't use one, they're at least 2-3 parking garages on 55th near the hotel. For foodies, look it's New York you have your pick and there are supermarkets nearby and whatever else you might want. The hotel was quite a plus after a busy day.I plan to stay there again. read more

Zero stars, would never stay again. (If it stays open) Got back around 1 am, to find out our room flooded from earlier that evening. Ceiling collapsed, water everywhere and some of our luggage destroyed. There was no call, no text, no email, no nothing. There were 2 men at the front desk that tried their best to help out. I was with a group of people and all of our rooms were flooded, again the two men tried to help. There was no manager there and we could not get in contact with them. We then were transferred to another hotel owned by the same people, which again wouldn't recommend not gonna get into the details on that one. Any older hotel in NYC just seem to have the same vibe, but I will say I love the staff at the Moderne. Super friendly, helpful, and made you feel so welcome. The hotel itself was fine. The carpet was worn carpet and could use an upgrade but the room was big enough for a friend and I to not get in each others way during our visit. They should definitely invest in a full length mirror for their rooms because when in NYC we dress fashion, but that was the only room accessory we were missing. read more

For the price I'm willing to spend, The Moderne Hotel delivered the best NYC hotel experience I've had to date. In the past, I've stayed at The New Yorker, Hotel Metro, The Kimberly, and assorted airbnbs. The Moderne Hotel has all of these beat for the following collective reasons: * Location, location, location - In a great and convenient part of Midtown, with easy access to Times Square and Columbus Circle, the Moderne is even within reasonable walking distance of Central Park. On my last visit I stayed at The New Yorker and found the part of Midtown where that's located to be far grittier; it's nicer up on West 55th. All of the subways I could wish for were very nearby and the area is the right amount of busy at all hours that regardless of time, both the subways and the surrounding streets always felt safe. * Quiet, dark room - The Moderne is a small hotel with only 34 rooms. Room 502 was as tiny as one expects a NYC hotel room to be but it had something that no other place I've stayed in has ever had: it was not street facing. Room 502 is an interior room with a window that faces a light well. This room gets no street noise and, with the blind drawn, stays dark as long as you desire. (Suites at The Moderne are street-facing). * Good A/C throughout - My traveling companion thought the A/C was too loud, purchased ear plugs after night #1 (of 6) and slept soundly from there on out. I sleep with a fan on at home and prefer this sort of noise. The room temperature was comfortable in the room and the hotel's common areas. * Free coffee, tea, and pound cake - Make your way down to floor #2 each morning and you save both time and money. It's nice not to have to start each day with a trip to the local Starbucks or worse. The cost for all this satisfaction? Manhattan never comes cheap. I booked a Deluxe Room (King-sized bed; 6 nights) through booking.com with full, no-penalty cancellation privileges until the day before check-in. The cost, including the NY taxes and fees ran $277.50 per night. I really hovered between four and five stars. The service is fantastic! Jerry the doorman was the best doorman I've ever seen at a hotel: he walked me to a waiting car with an umbrella when it rained, he was always friendly, kind, quick and gracious - it felt more like having a personal butler. The design of the lobby, halls and rooms is wonderful - in fact, we're redoing our bathroom at home and our designer had already suggested some design ideas like the Moderne - like a half glass shower door and porcelain faux marble tile for the walls - that I sent our designer pics of the Moderne bath so she could see the shower head and other details we liked! The bed is like a soft cloud - now I'm going to get a featherbed like theirs! Only a couple of minuses, or this would get five stars. The blackout drapes could use a white underlining curtain, so we can get light in the room but block a view from surrounding office buildings. Also, there were leaks in the room from Hurricane Ida, along the interior wall, and also in the elevator, and since we were two floors from the top, this suggests they need to do some serious work on the roof (although admittedly there was a hurricane!). Really great location - the bar that inspired "How I Met Your Mother" is across the street, the original locale for "The Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld is a few doors down, there's the Spy Museum on the corner, and Central Park is a few blocks away. It's quiet, too. Service was terrific, the staff made it feel like home, but with maids and a butler! The interior design was terrific throughout the hotel: fun and distinctive. The room was large, well laid out, and very comfortable. We will definitely stay here again on future trips! read more

Very nice hotel with very close proximity to Hell's Kitchen, Central Park, Times Square, Broadway, and numerous subway stations. Spent 3 nights here (checked in late Friday night and checked out Monday). Booked through Travelocity and had no issues. The hotel has limited amenities (ie no onsite fitness center), but does has coffee/tea/juice and fruit available 24 hours a day. Upon checking in, we were exhausted after being on European time for a week and traveling for 12 hours. Check in was straightforward, did have one issue with the keycard but that was remedied right away and no other issues. We got a room with a king bed and the bed took up the majority of the room, which is fine as we never plan on staying in the room but to sleep. There was a large flat screen tv, ironing board, hair dryer, umbrella, and safe available for use. The bathroom was not too small, but not large by any means. The mirrors and lighting were very good for getting ready. The shower was tile with a nice rainfall head as well as a handheld shower head also. The shower was a good size, didn't have issues touching the walls when showering or anything. There are only two improvements/changes I would suggest. One, add a light to make the sign outside the hotel visible at night. The second one sounds crazy, but after the first night, it became important. The bed frame is a few inches larger than the mattress, so the corners of the frame were farther out than the mattress. Because of this, we would misjudge the end of the bed and bang our ankles into the corners of the frame. I put a bag at the ends of the beds so that we would not continue to hit our ankles, and that did the trick. Overall, a clean, simple, modern hotel that will fill your needs if you aren't looking to remain in the hotel during the day and utilize amenities. With close proximity to many things in midtown west, most importantly Hell's Kitchen, we will definitely look at booking for future stays in the city. read more

My stay at the Moderne was amazing. Fun and Modern Decor. Very friendly staff willing to assist their guests. I had an unexpected emergency. I was very grateful for the the number of staff members that stopped by my room to lend a hand, ask questions, and show concern for my well being. After check in they asked " how was your room" "can we get you anything" . The Moderne exceeded my expectations in response time, proximity to Time Square, and overall comfort. The moderne hotel was great! Upon arriving our room was very tidy and had chocolates. The staff was very caring and when asked for recommendations, gave us good places to visit. We were able to leave our bags while we explored the next day. I accidentally left $200 in the side pocket of my bag and truthfully was afraid it most likely wouldn't be there. Avoid this hotel. They do bad business and they cheat people. My mom checked in to the hotel we were at and left promptly because the room was unclean. We were told we could cancel through Expedia because that is who we booked through and would be responsible for one night's stay which is fine. They ended up deciding to charge us for 2 nights stay with no clear reason as to why. 1 Night, sure but 2 nights just because they felt like it doesn't make sense. Our booking Policy said canceling would have just held us for one night. On top of that, they gave a fake email to us to pretend to want resolve the issue. I'm sad to see that I'm not the only person who has had to deal with bait and switch tactics from this hotel. read more

I'm sure everyone will agree that finding a hotel in NY can be pretty annoying, esp if you're on a budget and care about cleanliness. My friend suggested the Moderne for our weekend getaway and it turned out to be a positive experience. It's about a 20 block walk from Penn Station, which was a great way to add steps on my steps app hahaha Upon entrance, we were greeted by a friendly front desk receptionist and all the staff we've dealt with throughout our stay were very cordial and helpful. Check-in process was relatively easy, except for minor annoyances (no biggie though). It's a boutique hotel in New York, so expect tiny lobby and small rooms (reading people complain about small rooms in NY is pretty annoying; it's New York, people!). The room, even though small, was clean and there was enough space for my friend and I for our 3 day stay. Each room also has an umbrella in the room for when it rains (very thoughtful). Each floor hallway has different color wallpaper with cool geometric design. There is a guest lounge where one can have complimentary coffee, tea, cappuccino, hot chocolate, apples and coffee cake (7 am - 10 am). The Moderne is in a great location - walking distance to Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal - you get the point :) Only things I can complain about were the super slow elevator and the loud AC, but those two would not deter me from staying at this awesome hotel again in the future! read more

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed at in New york City. And good hotels in NYC are hard to come by! The moderne hotel offered such a comfortable and easy stay. It is also in a good location for it is just a few blocks from central park. The place is relatively new, the beds are spacious enough for two people and feels like a cloud, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I got a deal for a 2 double beds through my credit card company's reward program, so it cost me somewhere around $200-250 for a night. I was very impressed by the room size because not only are good hotels hard to come by in NYC, but hotel rooms with ample floor space are also hard to find! We could have fit a small air mattress on the floor if we really needed to. The room was not only spacious, but beautiful and artsy in its decor, and also very well kept and clean. But the one thing I was the most obsessed with was the bathroom. The bathroom had a huge mirror with light bulbs all around the perimeter as well as one of those amazing rainfall shower heads. I was sure to spend an extra 10 minutes more in the shower than I usually do to get my moneys worth. ;P They also offer free wi-fi and a room with plenty of outlets, as well as a cute and stylish lobby with complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate (via keurig machine). I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat, a bit pricier compared to other hotels without the deal, but more than worth every penny. read more

I booked a king room a week in advance and upon arrival the woman at the desk says "Hello Mr. blah blah blah, we've upgraded your king room to a room with two beds".... So obviously someone extended their stay or they downright gave my room away. I find that shit unacceptable, probably would have given 4 stars if not for this. Otherwise the staff was pleasant and helpfull, the room OK, carpet could use a refreshing, common areas were very nice and the free coffee in the lounge on the 2nd floor was excellent. The "Rain" shower head was not really my style, but it gave penty of hot water at very consistent temperature. Fridge in room was fairly new and clean, no microwave to speak of, but there is one in that 2nd floor lounge area if needed. The rate was good, the stay was alright, in a pinch I'd repeat but would definitely confirm they have the room I booked available before checking in. The hotel scene is way more competitive lately in general, I could have found what I wanted nearby at a similar price if I wanted to make an issue of it. read more

Overcharged. Treated rudely. Disturbing hotel stay where I was harassed in a noisy room and then price gauged for no reason. I was overcharged several hundred dollars for a horrible hotel stay and not refunded the money even after being yelled at by management on the phone and in person. Horrible customer service. Disrespectful staff. Overcharged probably because of location and what I was wearing that day. The room itself, while nicely furnished, was small without a view. However, the experience and cost eclipsed this one pleasant thing. The worst part was being charged twice and a 75 dollar cleaning fee because I asked to change the card charged from one card to splitting it over three cards because the room was more expensive than advertised. One one card I was charged 706.12 dollars. The room on the website was 200 dollars. In person 350 dollars. My other three cards were over charged as well. Tip: Make sure you book on the website. The pros: great location (Hell's Kitchen/Midtown area and within walking distance to Times Square, Central Park, Columbus Circle), reasonable rates (by NYC standards), free WiFi, mini refrigerator, free breakfast (beverages, pastries), clean rooms, modern/funky décor, generally good customer service (the person that checked me in, Robbie, was exceptionally helpful). The cons: room was very small (bed took up most of the room), noisy A/C, inadequate lighting, slow elevator with no A/C, no on site laundry) and no self service ice (had to ask the front desk for ice). Yay! This is a really cute little hotel. The rooms aren't luxe and huge by any means, but they're also not the tiny shoeboxes that most hotels in NYC offer; it's a nice comfortable size. The guy checking us in was super cool and sweet; we thought he was funny and helpful. It's in a convenient location but it's tucked away on a quieter street, which I like. Also, it's just a five minute walk from Halal so if you're in the mood for some late night eats, it's pretty perfect. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Moderne in October 2011 for our honeymoon. We arrived around 8am to drop our bags, and they were able to get us into a room at that time. We took a nap, and at some point our a/c stopped working. We were heading out and mentioned it to the front desk. When we returned, the a/c was fixed and a delicious red velvet cupcake from Crumb bakery was waiting for our "trouble". The staff was extremely helpful. Having never been to New York, I knew nothing about the subways. They helped with everything. When unexpected snow messed up our plans the last day, they allowed us to hang out in the common room even after checking out. Yes, the rooms are small, but I have stayed in smaller. The bed was quite comfy. The one thing I didn't like was the lack of counter space in the bathroom. It made it very difficult to balance a hot curling iron on the edge of the sink. The hallway wallpaper is crazy....but fun. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. The location was amazing also. A subway stop was nearby, and most areas were easily within walking distance. read more

We stayed for only one night, it was quite, the tv was a little fuzzy but ok. The room was clean, the bed had space underneath (not a platform bed) and there was nothing underneath. When I entered the elevator there was a staff member who was really nice, greeted us, when we left the elevator thanked us for staying with them. There was a little lounge area in the morning with a keurig machine, some blueberry pound cake and bananas and oranges, for free. Not much but more than other hotels would offer. No problems checking in or out. Overall not bad, and it was the cheaper hotel of all that I saw BUT, we did not use the shower, however I could see how it would get messy since half the shower is open, no curtain or anything read more

I don't know how this place has anything less than 4 stars. After spending 2 hours looking on Expedia for a hotel, I'm so glad I ended up choosing this one. From the minute we got there, everything was perfect. Robbie who works at the front desk was amazing - so friendly and so personable I felt like I was talking to someone I've been friends with for years. Me and a couple friends were planning on celebrating our birthdays and once we told Robbie this, he sent us up a bottle of wine and a cute cupcake for the occasion. He made sure to tell us where everything in the hotel was, including the guest lounge on the second floor which had free drinks and snacks. I even think he ended up upgrading our room! When we got to our room, it exceeded my expectations. The room looked just like the photos with high ceilings and modern looking furniture. It was huge and spacious perfect for three people, even 4. We had an awesome view of the streets below through large windows. We ordered room service which was very reasonably priced and actually tasted good. The wall paper on every floor was so cool and the small decorative touches everywhere were nice. The hotel was very quiet it was almost like we were the only ones there. When we checked out the next morning, we were allowed to leave our luggage in the storage room for as long as we wanted. Most places don't allow you to do that even for a couple hours. The location is great - close enough to walk to many touristy places but far enough away from all the traffic and congestion.You're right near 8th ave where there are many spots to get a quick bite to eat. I was even able to find free street parking a block away. I can't say enough good things about this hotel and I wouldn't hesitate to return the next time I need a hotel in the city. We were on the hot pink floor, and I just love the wallpaper. They also have a guest lounge with tea, coffee, and fruit as well as water. Nice surprise! BE WARNED! They charged $200 for something we didn't broke. When we left the room the table was not damaged at all. When we came back for our lagguage and wait for the shuttle the housekeeper says that we "broke the marble table". They didn't have evidence at all, but 'cause we had to go to the airport a discussion was not possible. But show us the room again with the broken table was also not possible 'cause it was "already replaced". Can't believe you treat your guests like that! We're not going to pay for this but as we expected they won't respond (they already fors for 5 days now) so that's why we will do it this way. Please be warned! We originally booked at the Ameritania and were moved to their sister hotel the Moderne due to a glitch in the system. They were very courteous over the phone and when we arrived. We had two rooms booked for a bachelorette. They were both very spacious. Robby at the front desk was amazing! We felt like he was one of our friends! We just adored him. He was very accommodating, encouraged us to use the lounge for a little bachelorette pregame (which was perfect for a girls party like that), and made sure to send up more towels and an ice bucket. My stay at the Moderne was uninhabitable. I had to evacuate the first room they placed me in when the heater started making a loud noise, sounding like it was going to be explode. The front desk then relocated me to another room, which had a broken safe, a broken chair, a leaking ceiling, and a worn down headboard. The ceiling in the shower was leaking so badly that I couldn't take a shower. I requested a different room, but none were available. Also, the elevator was out of order. DO NOT STAY HERE. read more
