You younger whippersnappers take it for granted but us old-timers will always be amazed that you can be in a strange town and open your phone and in less time it took to read this sentence... you're able to find a bakery just a few blocks away (thanks to Google and Yelp). That's how I found myself at Deb's. (And a much younger version of myself would've totally dipped into the dive bar right next door - Murph's - but now I'm old and boring.) The bakery smelled delectable, the two people behind the counter could not have been any nicer. The handful of items I tried... they were all 'okay' (at best). The bread (the reason I was urgently looking for a bakery when I found myself in Totowa) did the trick but wasn't great. The apple turnover was good. The wacky oversized chocolate chip cookies were not well-received by the rest of my family. The highlight of the visit - this mini apple strudel that the lady gave me while waiting for my debit card to go through. (Such a delightful little sugar bomb - I'd make the trek back up here JUST for a box of them.) 3-stars but Deb Pam got the bump-up thanks to the sweet lady and that comped little dessert. read more

If a place does what it's supposed to do and does it well, I'm willing to overlook some issues. Deb Pam is a perfect example of that. I stopped here late Sunday afternoon on my way home from a Jersey Shore hike, hankering for some type of sweet Italian pastry. I've been to the Irish dive bar (Murph's) next door once or twice over the years, but never into the bakery. Aesthetic-wise, Deb Pam could use some work. It's pretty drab and one corner of the storefront had cleaning equipment and various items just taking up space - not particularly hospitable. When I walked in, there were two employees behind the counter, one an older woman and the other a young adult/teen. Both just stared at me, didn't say anything, and went back to cleaning up (in mild defense, it was toward the end of the day, which isn't exactly an ideal bakery time). After a minute or two of examining the items in the display counters, the older woman finally acknowledged my presence and provided assistance. I impulsively went with a homemade black and white cookie ($2), which looked significantly more appetizing than the plastic-wrapped pre-made ones I used to see in NYC bodegas all the time. It was very scrumptious - the texture was what I remembered from the lower quality versions, cakey with harder icing, but it really hit the spot. I think expectations should be lowered a bit when you go into a pastry place later in the day (though those establishments should also consider offering these items at a discounted price once you get to a certain point in the afternoon if they're not still baking fresh inventory), but I would have been perfectly satisfied with this cookie on a morning visit too. It did not last more than a few minutes. The price point is super competitive for the area - a similar cookie at the Calandra's Bakery in Fairfield would have been about twice the cost, if not more. The bedside manner of its staff leaves much to be desired, but you know what? If the product is good, I don't need to be showered with constant love and affection. read more

I got introduced to this place by a coworker. This bakery has the best Boston cream donuts around. The dough is soft and the cream is good too. Make sure they put it in a box though. If they put it in a bag with the wax paper, the icing tends to stick to it and comes off. Thats the only downside. The service is good for a bakery. The ambiance is an ordinary bakery with lots of goodies. If in the area, definitely give them a try. I have become a recent lifelong lover of this bakery. More visits to come. read more

Deb Pam is almost always producing consistently good, high quality baked goods. I stopped in this past weekend at 7am to grab 6 donuts for the family to share. Highlights were the Boston Creme and Bismarck. Also- less than a dollar a donut- can't beat it. Their prices really haven't increased much over the years, which is not what I can say about Calandras bakery. Only once recently was I disappointed- picked up a maple walnut cake for Easter and the cake tasted a day or two old. Rolls were all fresh though. Definitely try the cannoli cake if you have a mind to- that is quite a good cake! read more

Pretty non descript bakery, both the gentleman who answered the phone when I called and the young lady in the store were pleasant . I called ahead to inquire if there were any covid rules that needed to be observed when I got inside, as well as if the large strawberry cheesecake would be available. Excellent Bakery. My parents recently moved to the area, and a visitor brought them some doughnuts from here, so I wanted to give them a try for the holiday. Awesome pies and everyone including the patrons, were very Covid responsible. The best cannolis I've had in a long time. The coconut custard pie was incredible. I come here for their cheese danish, which is not bad. My problem is with the lady who works behind the counter. She has these really nasty long fingernails she uses to pick up baked goods. Disgusting!! She could at least wear gloves if she is going to sport these very long nails that look like claws. I am surprised not many people know about this little gem of a bakery! It was recommended to me by someone who has lived in the area for years. Ordered a cake the day before a birthday- vanilla whipped frosting, yellow cake and custard filling. It was definitely one of the better cakes I have had in a while. Was it the best I have had? No. But nonetheless it was delicious and we really enjoyed it. Just the right amount of frosting and custard. It was decorated pretty, and the handwriting on the cake was very impressive. I would absolutely order again! Great price, great quality and extremely FRESH! We had no issues with service here at all. The women at the counter were friendly and helpful. Even gave us a sample to try before we ordered! We also ordered a pound of these apple filled cookies with cinnamon sugar on the outside. DELICIOUS! SO angry!!! Been going there for YEARS as they have the best Brown Derby cake. It's my husband's birthday today and I called this morning to ask them to reserve one as I will come in around lunchtime. Maria said ok np and asked for my name. I asked SEVERAL times if it's fresh because the last several times the fruit was twangy and tasted off. She said yes. I sent my son down to pick up the cake (over 40 minutes away )and they said they are all out of them!!! How can that be since Maria was saving the cake with my name on it? Really DepPam?? I used to order the strawberry shortcake from here all the time. However, the last few times I went here to taste other desert items such as cookies and a few of the smaller cakes they were all stale, old, crusty, funky tasting. However, I went once more after the stale pastry incident . Due to fact I still try to support local businesses. So after this incident I decided to purchase the strawberry shortcake do a get together A friend of mine was having. I mean after all the bakery lady on staff gave me a discount on my Stale pastries Prior. When we took I bite of the cake we all spit it out ! The cream was soured and the cake was semi stale. ( the cake was refrigerated once I got to my friends house) I was so embarrassed my friends mother had slaved and cooked such an amazing meal and it looked like I put no effort in purchasing desert. Verdict: I feel bad about this review. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. They were kind and They would give me discounts and allow me to try different items. The bakery doesn't receive much traffic so I think some of the items go stale due to this . So, instead of leaving them to go stale maybe they should donate to a soup kitchen or not make such huge batches because the quality of their items are on the line. I've since have been going to a bakery in Wayne called Gencerellis or something of that effect . I've never gotten a stale or spoiled item from them. but it's an extra 15 minutes to get there. I hope they turn things around I really like the atmosphere of DebPam very old school in a good way but I most likely will not return and its a shame because there aren't many bakeries in the area. read more

Last week went to the bakery to pick up some pastries for a dinner party. I purchased the pastries and when we started to eat them I was mortified they we were probably 2 weeks old. The next morning went back to speak to them about it and what I was told was I should have brought them back. All they had to say was sorry nothing else .I will never never ever go back there again. Shhhhh. This is place is my secret. They have the BEST birthday cakes in the whole of the Tri-State. I have been getting my birthday cakes and other cakes from them for years. People request their cake be from Deb Pam and they look forward to it as the best part of the party. Their cakes are fresh, not frozen like some *ahem* bigger name bakeries in the area. It is a classic cake, not fancy like Cake Boss or any fondant-covered creation. I order the vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and banana's and vanilla custard inside, covered with whipped cream icing...OMG it is like heaven. I love that they make it so fresh and to order. The secret is in the cream. If you go, you must try a cream doughnut or eclair if you don't need a whole cake. Seriously, you will crave this bakery. The best bakery around the area and here's why: every cake my family and I have ever ordered has been not only delicious but fresh. The prices for the cakes are affordable. I have also tried several of the pastries and have not been disappointed. I even like the red velvet cupcakes from here because they use cream cheese icing. My recommendation for a cake would be to ask for fresh whipped cream on the inside. It costs more than the custard but it's worth it especially when paired with fresh strawberries! I have only tried their Vanilla Ice cream cakes and will say that they are awesome! The staff was very nice, friendly and welcoming once you enter the place. Would give the place 5 stars, however, back in June for my birthday, my mom ordered a vanilla cake from them, only to find out they used vanilla bean ice cream for about 50% of the cake, (which by the way I hate vanilla bean) and about 30% vanilla. Not sure what the thought process was here but the cake was not great with the vanilla bean. (By the way the other 20% had no ice cream filling) This was the first time all these things have happened so my family and friends were extremely surprised. Not sure if they ran out of ice cream and decided to fill it in with what they had or what, but that was not cool whatsoever, especially when paying a decent amount for the cake. I walked in there on a Sunday evening prior to closing and two young children were cleaning the display cases while the older lady behind the register was on the phone. I walked around looking for what I would be happy to bring home, and couldn't make a decision because of the slim pickens; I guess this was because it was so close to closing time. I waited for what seemed like an eternity, but in all actuality was probably 5 minutes. A group of younger adults walked in and FINALLY the lady behind the register got off the phone and paid some attention to the customers. This was pitiful! I had been eating Deb Pam items for pretty much since I have been able to walk. When I moved to FL almost 13 years ago, I then realized what a gem this bakery was because nothing could compare to anything in Florida. I still refuse to buy store made (supermarket) items, I always prefer fresh. When I visit NJ twice a year, I HAVE to have my fill on the doughnuts and cupcakes. If there was a way to bring home a cake or pie on the plane I would. The cream and jelly doughnuts are amazing and the crumb cake. Very disappointed at my most recent visit. This is a staple bakery that I go to when in Totowa and I won't be going back. The layer fudge cake I bought had absolutely no taste and there was barely any icing on outside of cake and within layers inside. The cake tasted stale as it if were days old. My family has used this bakery for at least 20 years, and the quality of the baked goods is excellent. Don't be put off by the inside, which looks like it hasn't been updated since the 60's. It is very clean, and in a certain light, it's quite charming that they've kept everything the same. This is a traditional bakery, not a place that makes cakes shaped like full size sports cars or mojito curry cupcakes. Their cakes/pastries/breads are beautiful, fresh, and delicious, but not too trendy. And I mean that as a compliment. I suggest you get here early in the morning, or at least as early as you can. The stock can get picked clean in the blink of an eye on holidays. I notice lines tend to form right after the Masses end at St. James, so try to plan your arrival accordingly if you can. My one pet peeve with them is the lines and how they manage them. Sometimes people will walk in the door push to the front counter, and the employees will just take them instead of people who have been standing in front of their faces for the past 15 minutes. And I'm not talking about people who have pre-ordered anything. And speaking of pre-orders, I have on more than one occasion spent longer waiting on a pre-order line (with an order ticket with a specified pick-up time I might add) than people who have just walked in the door and waited on the "general" line.
