There's NO restaurant! Our cousin stayed here and she enjoyed the old feeling and was very quiet.

The Decker Hotel in Maquate IA is a beautiful step back in time. I wish I could stay longer.

I don't know if I can write a review that does proper Justice to this truly awesome place, but I'll do my best. We found it completely by accident while driving to Galena, IL. Because of the time of year, rooms in the area were pretty scarce, so we just happened to call and found a vacancy ... In the Grand Suite, which was honestly not outrageously priced. With few other options we took a gamble and wow, did that gamble pay off! For starters. The hotel is really more of a B&B style establishment so don't expect a corporate style hotel. The owners also appear to be the staff which is fantastic! The love and care they show in their work really comes out in the detail and beauty of the building and the rooms. When you walk in, you're greeted by a lobby that immediately transports you back in time. We spent our first 10 minutes just walking around and marveling at the attention to detail that the owners have paid to preservation. There aren't words, so I'll post photos instead. Upstairs, we found a Grand Suite that defies my ability to put it into words. So, again, I'll post photos. The basement of the hotel features a little lounge with phenomenal food and locally brewed beers from a brewery, right here in town. In the morning, the family opens up a little breakfast restaurant for guests. Again, it's not a corporate hotel, so the restaurant is only open for a limited time, but it's fantastic! Again, I can't say enough positive things about this place, but what I can say is that we found it be accident, and we will absolutely come back for a weekend getaway in the future. We booked a suite. It was nice for an OLD hotel. Clean room, cold air, good space. Elevator is sketchy, so use it to go up and walk down, only 1/2 the travel time. Slept well. Got towels and I e when requested. Happy with the staff member we met. read more

Hidden gem. Recently remodeled and appointed to wonderful standards. Pet friendly. Centrally located. Plenty of parking. I will stay here again just for the the king bed and jacuzzi. By the way, the manager, Paige, is a star and from booking my reservation to checkout I felt like I was part of her family. read more

Fantastic! The freshly made sweet potato waffle fries and chips were light and perfect. My grilled chicken salad was fresh with a nice array of vegetables. Grandpa loved his pulled pork sandwich. A great lunch for 4 under $40. We were able to tour the Victorian guest rooms which were charming as well. Will be back. read more

A wonderful place to stay in Maquoketa. It sure beats the chain hotels. It's like walking back into history. The rooms are clean and private. Bed was very comfortable and water pressure was amazing! I eat lunch here on a regular basis. This place is fantastic. Great home-cooked food (the breads and pastry crust on quiche to die for). Great soups too. Its fast if you are in a hurry, but if you want to hang out and chat, its such a warm and relaxed atmosphere in a classic old building, that's perfect too. Why anyone would get a frozen pizza or same-old burger for lunch somewhere else is beyond me. The price is basically the same to eat a first class lunch here. This place rocks! We were excited to try a new spot on a road trip. Underwhelmed. It is an impressive Victorian property that has struggled with merging the old with new amenities such as the ladies room. Our dining experience was average food, a wait staff more interested in getting ready for dinner service than getting our lunch out. This is a place to put on your list to visit. On all three levels. Every one of the rooms are beautiful with an historic feel to it. But each looks different. The restaurant is magnificent. A small menu but good food. The cakes are made fresh daily. I suggest you come Sundays for the brunch. Down in the basement is a really nice bar. You can unwind here with an adult beverage of your choice. Without having to worry about it becoming loud and crazy. My compliments to the owners who bought it back. read more

Hidden gem. Beautiful 19th century home converted into a gorgeous hotel and restaurant. Food is top notch.

My husband and I stayed one night and our experience was great from start to finish. The food was delicious, the service attentive and friendly, the room was comfortable and clean--the bed was nice, there was great water pressure, and the linens smelled good to name a few of the niceties. It's a beautiful old building that is well taken care of and it's nice to be able to contribute to the upkeep with some patronage. We spent some time in the pub in the basement talking with the owners who obviously love what they're doing. Beware that the previous owner's website is still active, you want to be at deckerhotel1875 and phone 563-652-1875. Ownership changed January 2013. This restaurant is a disaster. I was told it was under new management and/or ownership and that hopefully the food had gotten better with the change so I decided to try it out. I never tasted the food before the switch but it couldn't be any worse than what I had. The "seafood platter" isn't fresh. It's all fried fish and I can tell it most likely came from a bag and then cooked in the oven so not even fresh fried. The rice pilaf I got as a side I could tell had been made in bulk and then warmed in the microwave as it was still chilled when I ate it. The steak was incredibly fatty and the fried pickles had so much breading on them you can't even taste the pickle. I would not recommend this food to anyone. I understand being in a small town and not having easy access to certain foods like fresh fish but you could at least get the fish from Costco in bulk and fry it fresh made to order or just not fried at all. Would not recommend restaurant at all! read more

What a beautiful historic hotel. But what disastrous management. Beautiful Restaurant closed. No one at front desk. Just a phone number posted which wasn't answered. I wandered the empty hotel for an hour before finding someone to check us out. Doors to lobby locked from 7 pm until 11 am the next day (fire code???). It is such a shame that this business is so neglected and mismanaged. Upon complaining about the lack of service and cutting our stay short, we were refunded our nights stay. Very quaint hotel. Historic building. Preserved. Plenty of free parking. I flew to Dubuque for a job in Rock Island, IL. This was a perfect place to rest for the night. A gem in the middle of nowhere Iowa. Gorgeous exterior. High ceiling interiors. Creaking floorboards, likely to have ghosts within the perfectly wallpapered walls. The restaurant is the best in town with perfectly prepared comfort foods at perfectly fair prices. Wish they had more vegetarian options. 90% of their menu features chicken and I don't each chicken because my chihuahua is about the size of a small chicken. So, i choose not to eat something that reminds me of my dog. But their tuna melt was one of the best I've had (get it on rye bread)! The sweet potato fries are crunchy and fresh, served up with a pickle on the side. Great vibe and friendly customer service. Although beautiful and cutesy, it was hard to sleep with all the lights out. A tad bit creepy and a ghostly air. I slept with the television on for companionship. Speaking of television: an abundance of great channels to choose from. And although this place is old, the wifi still works at modern speed. I would definitely recommend the Decker. It also has a very creative vibe so it's a nice stop to lay your head and maybe write a novel, or a poem, or a blog, or maybe just a Yelp review. read more

Stopped to eat at the restaurant for lunch. The building has a strong musky odor upon entering and the smell lingers in the restaurant. I understand it's a old, historic building but proper ventilation and maintenance to the building would remedy some of the mold/mildew issues. The restaurant decor is not historic or charming but rather cheap and unkept looking. Drinks served in plastic glasses that were scratched and cracked. The ketchup bottle the server brought us looked old as the label was worn and peeling. My friend ordered the chicken salad which was bland and short on chicken. The French Dip I ordered was made with roast beef lunch meat. I know this because after complaining about the sandwich the owner came out to our table with a roast beef wrapped in plastic wrap and a nutrition label - the same type of roast beef you see at the deli counter in a supermarket when you order lunch meat. The owner said the meat was sliced fresh - I didn't argue with her - she obviously didn't understand that I did not go to a restaurant to eat a sandwich made with cold cuts. No offer of a discount was given to us for this awful lunch that was $30.00, only that they would give us a free piece of cake the owner baked this morning. read more

Myself and group of friends on our motorcycles stayed the evening of June 2nd, and it was just a very nice place to stay, and everything was self contained there with the bar and restaurant also there. Very clean rooms with plenty of hot water and water pressure. Our only beef was no coffee to be found anywhere there in the morning before the breakfast buffet opened at 9:30. Would stay there again for sure. read more
