While we didn't have a chance to go inside the museum, the grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The gardens are a lovely spot to walk, explore and smell the flowers - when blooming. Staff kept to themselves and gave us space to wander the property. We walked, but Deepwood is set on a busy street corner so be prepared for traffic as you make your way to the parking area and the noise as you wander the gardens. read more

What a hidden gem in Salem! My husband and I have been trying to visit local museums and venues now that he is retired and this one popped in on our radar. We had an event near Salem so we thought we'd stop by. It's so quaint, gorgeous and proved to be lovely get away for the afternoon. It's not overly large as you can most likely walk and enjoy the trails, gardens and sights in about 30 minutes. There is a house tour but only on limited days/times and the day we visited was not one of those days. Beautiful flowers, tucked away benches and meandering trails all made for a wonderful walk. I had the pleasure to visit these grounds twice with a very cool friend back in February. I didn't have any agenda on where to go or what to see so both times i just left it up to her guiding us around. It was really fun and I'm super grateful to her. I'd totally come here often just to walk & sit in peace if I lived nearby. One visit it was covered in snow. That day we just wandered around like 2 goofballs soaking in the peaceful environment; it was quite empty that time. The next visit, the snow hath retreated and it was just a teeny tiny bit more busy but still very much at peace around us. I did feel like I was far away from the urban jungle that is the city, even if only for a brief time. We even had the charming & cozy greenhouse quietly all to ourselves for a period of time which was really awesome. These were during the weekend in mid-Winter. I'd imagine there being just a bit more hubbub come Spring-Fall. Regardless, I enjoyed the sprawling nature amongst the tall & grand wise old trees that overlook this city. Someday, it'll be cool to do the museum tour. I also feel kinda bad with how quiet it was; on the one hand, big crowds can seem overwhelming and ruin the serene nature peace but also want to see people enjoying this local expansive park. Not much else to really nitpick aside from maybe the restrooms could probably use a bit more regular maintenance. 2 thumbs up. Walk around this place for a while, won't ya? read more

Beautiful property and gardens that are very well maintained. My wife and I were the only ones there for the tour so it felt a little more personal, which was nice. The tour guide was extremely friendly and knowledgable, you might have guessed she knew the home owners personally if they weren't from such a long time ago! We had the most wonderful visit! We were the only ones on our tour so we got to ask a million questions. Lisa was our guide and she did a wonderful job! We loved that she played the player piano for us and then wound the music box in the nursery. The grounds were beautiful. I'm afraid my review is going to be a repeat of pretty much what everyone else has said, but as one other reviewer has said, this is also MY happy place! When work feels stressful or Salem feels too busy (or stressful), a walk around the gardens soothes the soul, mind, spirit, eyes and ears and even my blood pressure. So far, I have only seen it in late winter, spring and summer, but each season has been beautiful. The gardens feel like a step back in time and one can imagine how pleasant it must have been to live in this oasis back in the day. It is also a great place to bring out-of-town visiting family and friends. I loved touring this lovely home, learning the history of the previous owners, and appreciating the obvious care taken in assembling period furnishings. The tour guide was wonderful! She was engaging, funny, full of interesting facts and details, and because my tour group was small and cozy, she had plenty of time to answer questions. I even bought some loose tea and an adorable antique China teacup from the little collection of gift items for sale in the entrance foyer. There are trails leading off into the woods behind the home which possibly connect up with trails going into Bush Park, but after hiking quite a way in, I came across something (or someONE) who made me decide to halt my urban exploring for the day and retreat back to the Deepwood grounds. I note that they hold formal high teas periodically, with themes (I think) and what looks like perfect little tea sandwiches, but they seem to sell out instantly, and persons lucky enough to have all the time in the world (as in not working stiffs like me, I guess) to jump on getting tickets snap them up right away. I think if you follow them on Instagram or Facebook, you stand a good chance of at least hearing about these events. Fingers crossed for me to catch one someday! read more

This is a beautiful historic Queen Anne home that is beautifully maintained..from the lush gardens, old growth trees to the furnished, ornate inside. Deep wood reflects its multiple owners, their history within the home and changes made to the home over time. I was on time for the noon tour today November 9th, 2023. When I tried to enter to join the group the guide turned me away and said they started 20 minutes early. I asked if I could just join for the rest of the tour and she said No! So much for the professional hospitality and excitement of sharing a historic monument. Previous guides have always been polite and eager to welcome guests..but not today. Shame because from the outside the architecture and grounds looks amazing! Would have been wonderful to learn Deepwood's history. Good luck! read more

This is my happy place, especially in the Spring and Fall. Such pretty grounds all year around, but my favorite time to visit is when the flowers are in bloom. I have also enjoyed the different types of tours offered. Last year I toured the house when it was decorated for Christmas, I highly recommend it. read more

It's a pretty little garden. I was a little disappointed by the size I thought it'd be bigger, but it's a beautiful property the house is the star attraction. Adults are $6 I believe it said kids were free check the website to verify that because I'm not 100% on that. The parking lot has ample space, parking is free. The garden might be small but it has a park that backs up to the property and adds in some walking trails. Public bathroom is clean and well maintained. Has some nice and shady spots would be a great spot for relaxing if I lived in the area I would probably sit in the back garden on the benches and read for hours. The greenhouse is nice to visit on a chilly day and always has a gem blooming somewhere. It's a nice piece of Salem history so it's worth a visit. read more

My dear friend had her outdoor wedding here this summer, it is a very beautiful and historic setting with lush green lawns, trees, peaceful pathways, and of course the historic Deepwood Estate, a white house. It's a convenient location a few minutes from Salem's city center. The magical setting seems like an ideal wedding location, and my friend said their rates were very reasonable (and included the chairs and tables for the wedding and reception), especially compared to local wineries. The gardens reminded me of those in The Secret Garden novel, my friend's wedding took place in a lovely spot framed by towering trees, shrub archways, etc. The reception was held in a different area of the gardens, which was also very romantic with twinkling lights and Chinese lanterns that glowed as night fell. The Deepwood is a beautiful building set on a wide expanse of ground, right in the middle of Salem. It's a little incongruous, to be honest. You don't expect it to be there, or for the paths to go so far and winding. But they do. A beautiful gazebo feels like it's buried under ground, but when you look at it dead on, it fits perfectly. A covered event area, a rose garden, beautiful (but a wee bit small) greenhouse, plus the gorgeous house itself...all are just marvelous. I've attended a wedding here, and it was a great event. I have walked along the paths with my significant other, and found it relaxing and beautiful. The place won't take your whole day...but if you're looking for a little break into nature, or if you're strolling around Bush Pasture Park next door to the Deepwood, I highly recommend a quick jaunt about the grounds here. I have yet to tour the house, but the price is pretty cheap and I fully intend to, sometime in the near future. read more

My sister and I took our aunt here for her birthday, and it was a win all the way around. The gardens are amazing and the house is actually really interesting--extravagant for its time, it was built by a wealthy family and includes many memorials to their son. The gardens are lovely, and try to be authentic to the time. They're always open and are free to check out anytime. My family came to the Willamette Valley not too long before the house was built, so it was nice to get a slice of life and some history of the time. read more

Although we thought it was open, Deepwood's house was officially closed for the day! But Melanie saw us waiting & gave four of us an excellent tour of the house @ 2:00 pm. The house tour included the history of the house & gardens and a room by room view of furniture, china, silver and crystal - which really showed off the beauty of this old Victorian home! The gardens were amazing, and even in late October had many blooming plants. It was a BEAUTIFUL day yesterday, so I took my daughter for a long walk. Deepwood was along our " path" so we took a quick stroll through the gardens. They were amazing, I can't wait to see when everything is in full bloom. Alot of other people/families were there for the tour of the mansion and to walk through the gardens too. This is a great little park backed on by the much larger Bush Pasture Park. Deepwoods Estate has a beautiful Victorian house. Take the tour if you can and learn the history of the place. This is one of those places where you feel like I feel like I have steped into a book. The Victorian house, beautiful gardens with big trees, ferns, shade gardens, a gazebo just waiting for the wedding to show up... If you like plants you have to visit. I always enjoy a break here to wander around and look at the place. If you like to take pictures, it is hard to get a bad shot. Tip. There is direct access from.the gardens to Bush Park. read more

Deepwood offers a slightly different twist on the historic home tour model, and a fascinating one at that. Unlike the nearby Bush House, which has remained virtually unchanged through the years (right down to the wallpaper!), Deepwood underwent a significant interior remodel in the 1930s and was used as a residence until the late 60s. Some purists may be dismayed at the more recent additions, but I think the anachronistic Art Deco touches applied to this Queen Anne house - which are, to the designer's credit, very well integrated - enhance your awareness that this was a beloved family home for several generations, changing with the times by necessity. People lived here, not ghosts or historical abstractions. The English gardens are spectacular. A garden tour does not require an admission fee, and I wonder why more people don't use the beautiful gazebos as a solitary hangout spot. There is also a nature trail that stretches from the house to Mill Creek, but it is the one part of the tour that could use some serious maintenance; plaques that once named the trees and bushes on the trail have been vandalized, and the blackberries are beginning to smother the native flora. read more

If you're a history buff this place is worth checking out. It's not as fancy as the Peacock Mansion in Portland, but it's probably the best house in Salem. They have a beautiful garden as well. read more

Absolutely beautiful venue! We got married in the Scroll Garden, a cozy spot that everyone raved about afterwards. We had 100+ people but it still felt very intimate and tucked away, without feeling cramped. We held our reception under the tent and had plenty of space for 20 tables, buffet, bar, dessert tables, and a dance floor, with lawn games nearby in the Shade Garden. All the kids loved playing under the trees, so the parents were very happy. We took group photos in front of the house and in the Great Room Garden, and did our first look in the Tea House Garden. There are so many great spots for photos, it's like ten venues in one! Elizabeth was an absolutely fantastic coordinator. Detail-oriented, responsive, thoughtful, extremely knowledgeable about the venue, I could go on for days. She was just perfect for the role. Anytime there was an unexpected hiccup (which there always are with weddings) I knew she was on top of it, totally put me at ease. Our wedding was perfect and I credit a huge part of that to Elizabeth's immense professionalism and the beautiful gardens at Deepwood. read more

We recently visited for the first time, while attending an outside flea market event. The grounds are gorgeous! We could have stayed for hours just enjoying the gardens & taking pictures of the flowers. We didn't get to go inside, but the outiside architecture was beautiful. The history of the estate is interesting and we'll definately go back to do an inside tour some day. There are nice restroom facilities and looks like a wonderful place to have a wedding or event here. read more

This is my review for weddings here. I had my wedding here and had been happy with everything for the most part until my wedding day. While this place is beautiful for pictures, if you have your heart set on a garden wedding, I wouldn't recommend this place if rain is of any concern. It was a beautiful overcast day on my wedding day, but they wouldn't let me have my ceremony on the grass because they said someone would fall in the chairs because the grass was wet...mind you it was not that wet, we took pictures in the grass! They also wouldn't set up the chairs on the concrete in front of the carraige house when I asked. Basically If it rains the day before, you're not going to have your dream wedding. I was so upset by this. They never said anything about not having the ceremony if it rains the day before. I rolled with it on my wedding day but I am so disappointed and don't even want to watch my video because the ceremony was in the tent and was just not set up for how it was supposed to be, even if it had been raining. I, of course, was not able to go take a look at the tent because I was all dressed up and didn't want anyone to see me. I trusted that the staff would have it set up for 'plan b'. If it was raining, I wouldn't have been as upset, but it wasn't...it was a beautiful day. I'll get over it soon, but for those brides who want a garden wedding, find a place where they will let you have it on damp grass should it be a dry day, or if you have the money (we didn't) book another venue that's indoors in case it rains. This makes me wonder what they do for weddings who do not pay extra for the tent and it does rain! read more
